The Narayana Sukta, is a hymn on the Supreme Being as the Father of creation, inconceivably transcendent and yet hiddenly

present in the heart of everyone, being nearer than even the nearest of things. This is a tiny but incisive form of meditation by which the human spirit endeavours to commune with the Supreme Spirit.

Vihvata Paramaam Nitya Vihva Naaraayangam Harim, Oh Supreme Being Naaraayan, Oh Hari, you are the whole Universe,You are Eternal Vihvameveda Puruhastadvihvamupajvati. The Omnipresent Absolute which destroys all sins.

Pati Vihvasytmevarag Shhvatag Shivamachyutam, Oh master of the universe, the Lord of all souls you are Shiva{auspicious}, Achyuta{indestructible}

Narayaa Mahajeya Vihvatmna Parayaam. Oh Narayaa you are Supreme object worthy of being known, the Soul of all beings, the shelter unfailing Narayaa Paro Jyotiratm Narayaa Para. Narayana is the Supreme Light; Narayana is the Supreme one.

Yaccha Kichidjjagatsarva Dihyate Shryyate'pi Va, Whatever all this universe is, seen or heard ofpervading all this,

Antarbahicha Tatsarva Vyapya Narayaa Sthita. Situated inside and outside, All pervading s supreme the Eternal Divine Being (Narayana).

Anantamavvyaya Kavigu Samudre'nta Vihvaambhuvam, You are Limitless, Imperishable, Omniscient, residing in the ocean of the heart, the Cause of the happiness of the universe,

Padmakohapratkahagi Hidaya Chpyadhomukham. Oh Narayaa you manifest yourself in the inside of the heart which is comparable to an inverted bud of the lotus flower.

Adho Nihaya VitasyAnte Nbhyamupari Tihati,

Below the centre of the throat, and above the naval(i.e., the heart which is the relative seat of the manifestation of Pure Consciousness in the human being),

JvalamalAkula BhAti Vihvasyayatana Mahat. Effulges the Great Abode of the universe, as if adorned with garlands of flames.

Santatag Shilbhistu Lambatykoasannibham Surrounded on all sides by nerve-currents (or arteries), the lotus-bud of the heart is suspended in an inverted position.

Tasyante Suhirag Sookhma Tasmin Sarva Pratihitam. In it is a subtle space (sushumna-nadi)and therein is to be found the Substratum of all things.

Tasya Madhye Mahaanagnirvihvrchirvihvatomukha, In that space within the heart resides the Great Flaming Fire, undecaying, all-knowing, with tongues spread out in all directions,

So'grabhug Vibhajan Tihan Ahaaramajara Kavi. With faces turned everywhere, consuming all food presented before it, and assimilating it into itself.

Tiryagrdhavamadahay Rahmayastasya Santata, His rays, spreading all round, sideways as well as above and below,

Santapayati sva Dehamapatatalamastakam, Warm up the whole body from head to foot.

Tasya Madhye Vanhihikha Aiyordhva Vyavasthita. In the centre of That (Flame) abides the Tongue of Fire as the topmost among all subtle things.

Nlatoyadamadhyasthad vidyullekheva Bhasvara, Brilliant like a streak of lightning set in the midst of the blue rain-bearing clouds, slender like the awn of a paddy grain,

Nvarahkavattanv Peet Bhasvatyapama. Yellow (like gold) in colour, in subtlety comparable to the minute atom, (this Tongue of Fire) glows splendid.

Tasya Sikhay Madhye Paraamtma Vyavasthita, In the middle of that Flame, the Supreme Self dwells.
