We went in search of some
hyper-masculine spaces. Brick
and mortar temples to testoster-
one that personify traits of tough-
ness. The first thing we noticed
was just how rare these spaces are.
Sure, Hef has the Playboy Man-
sion, Batman has a cave that's part
garage, part laboratory and part
hideout and, despite owning an
envious home, Tony Starkes is
happiest in his basement. But
what about the guy down the road?
If the Man Cave is the last
refuge of masculinity, are we
destined to live in homes femi-
nised by frou-frou filigree?
Bulldozers!
We found some guys who
pooled their resources and built
a grown-up answer to the neigh-
bourhood treehouse, another who
built his drean1 home from the
ground up and then invited his
family to share it with him, and
a third dude who will turn your
space into a man space with a few
deft swings of his mallet...
Our aim here is to inspire and
then equip you with the means
to carve out an area where you
can properly dedicate yourself
to manly pursuits. If that's dis-
playing your collection ofrugby
jerseys and smashing tins oflager,
that's totally up to you. Just hit
us up with an invite as soon as
you do, bud.
ZEN AND THE AR T
O F MOTORCYC LE
MA I NTENAN C E
For a guy who sits around
drawing pictures all day,
Ruan Vermeulen is pretty
handy with a spanner.
After building up an inter-
nationally celebrated
company that started life
in a humble digs in Stellen-
bosch, Vermeulen was
looking for a release.
There's only so much time
you can spend sitting in
front of a screen or pitch-
ing at clients, you know.
So Vermeulen called up his
friend Robert Nicholls, a commer-
cials director who, like Vermeu-
len, also heard the call of the
unknown. The pair bought them-
selves retro Royal Enfields and
went on a two-week adventure in
the Karoo. When they came back,
the bikes had rattled to pieces, and
they'd learnt a thing or two about
toying with a motorcycle. But
most importantly, the bike bug
had bitten. Hard.
Having noticed how a lot of
guys were buying these same sub-
standard, yet aesthetically pleas-
ing bikes, they decided that to
really stand out from the crowd
JUNE 2 01 3 153
they'd build up their own rides to
their exact specs.
"If you think meditation
works, you should try getting into
this," says Nicholls. "Your mind
stops and all shess becomes irrel-
evant. Only the bike is important."
But first they'd need a space.
Together with two other like-
minded individuals, Robyn Goode
and Jannes Hendrikz, they settled
on a garage that was being used by
a metalworker as storage space.
The building had been there since
Woodstock was a seaside town.
And at just 10 minutes from Cape
Town, this squarish box was
cheap, quiet and perfect for the
creatives to pack their MacBooks
away and roll up their sleeves.
They kept their renovations on
the cheap. First they gutted the
place, removed some drywall, got
rid of all the makeshift wooden
shelving, chipped away at the
dried cement mounds on the floor,
put in electrics and plumbing,
splashed on a lick of paint...
"I'm a frustrated architect/
designer so I really went to town,"
says Nicholls, who sourced the
lights from Milnerton Market,
sprayed the insides canary yellow
and the exterior satin black.
"We used stoepvetffor the
floor," adds Ve1meulen, who
admits that while it looks great
aesthetically, it's not the best
option for a workshop floor.
"Just try looking for a little screw
or whatever you've dropped."
The barn-style door had 100
years of paint on it, so they sanded
it down and stenciled on their logo
- Fury Custom Bike Shop. "It was
dark when we got around to sand-
ing down the inside of the door.
That's when the lights cutout,
so we had to line up our bikes
and finish up using headlights."
The bar was made from wood
salvaged from a nearby building
site. They bought a grinder,
sanded it all down, bought some
cheap pine units and then laid
them over that structure. Along
the walls they used industrial
shelving - like what you'd see at
a grocery store. And after they got
some quotes back on indushial
bike benches they decided to build
their own - which work just as
well, they're quick to add.
With their bikes acting as
excellent advertisements parked
outside the hip venues these guys
frequent, they're now so busy with
commissions that they don' t
really have time for their own
bikes anymore.
"It's a hobby that's turned
into a business of sorts," says
Nicholls. "We've employed a
full time guy, Tony, who helps
us with the overrun while we're
running our other businesses.
And his dog takes care of security.
Look, the place isn't making
money, and we still have to pay
out of our own pocket, but it's a
passion thing and if it ends up
paying for itself, great."
Fury has become the new
after-work local, with quarts
being bought from the shebeen
around the comer and kept in a
fridge under the counter. It's also
the perfect place for braais, watch-
ing sport and hosting events that
have ranged from a bachelor party
to an art exhibition.
Any additions? Future plans?
Pipe dreams?
"A boxing gym next door .. .
A nice Italian coffee machine .. .
No, we'll probably just keep strip-
ping away the comforts to make
space for more bikes. There was a
couch in here for a while but now
there are just these barstools."

THE FAMILY G UY
Usually when a man shacks up with his
girl, has some kids and gets the family
dog to complete the picture, he sacrifices
a little bit of himself. Slowly but surely the
things that are important to him are ush-
ered into back rooms, or garages, to ulti-
mately become forgotten and gather dust.
Not so if you're Damien Van Zyl, who lives
inharmonywith both.
Having lived out of a suitcase for 12 years in New
York, Paris and the East, Van Zyl wanted stability and
a place to call his own. After hanging up his Z-card
and cashing in his last modelling cheque, he bought
a house in Blouberg which, for a while at least, he was
happy to call home.
It wasn' t long before he was missing city living.
Salt River reminded Van Zyl of New York City in the
90s, when it was still qui te rough, and after finding a
building that had been everything
from a laundromat to a twine fac-
tory, an upholstery place and a
printers, he didn' t hesitate.
"The space had so much
character. So much history. I
mean, this was once a farm. My
son's room was the stable."
Setting up a tent in the middle
of the 1 OOOm2, double volume
warehouse - amongst dust and
rubble - Van Zyl began his mam-
moth project. The wiring had
been stolen so he ran an extension
cord from a neighbour's house.
Outside in the courtyard there's
a cold water tap which Van Zyl
used to wash with for the first
four months of the renovation.
"First I gutted the place, then
sandblasted everything and re-
wired it. I did most of the details
myself and got some guys in to
do the messier work. The walls,
the floors - they're all marbelite,
like what's used for swimming
pools. It's a nice contrast to all
the dark wood, reflects the light
and is waterproof."
Dan1ien has designed his place
so it can easily transform into
something else. At the moment
there's the living area, a workshop
- Salt River Customz - and a pho-
tographic studio and agency, SIX-
LOVE. But it's still mainly about
the cars, the reason he wanted this
particular space in the first place.
He lights up when he takes me
in to the workshop. It's got a spray
booth, a mezzanine level cluttered
with parts, some tools, but noth-
ing too fancy. Van Zyl is old-school
like that. Kind oflike the cars he
works on here.
"I'd always wanted a space big
enough for my passion. I bought
my Ford Fairmont at the same
time that I bought this place.
The two just went together really
nicely. Now there are two Fair-
lanes, a 48 Truck, a GMC truck,
some motorbikes ... "
Damien was born in Kimber-
ley to teenaged parents. There
wasn't much money, but there
were stock cars, bikes and the
kitchen table always had an
engine on it. After his father's bike
accident and 27-Club call-up, Van
Zyl became man of the house.
When something broke he was the
one who had to fix it. There wasn't
another choice. He was forced to
grow up quickly.
His home is testament to the
lessons that he learned early on,
and one can't help imaginingjust
how great a space like this must be
for his two children to grow up in.
The bedrooms are off the open
plan lounge, kitchen and dining
area. The workshop has been por-
tioned off using teak art-deco
doors. Solid oregon pine pillars
and beams support the second
floor, whicli is accessed via an
ancient pulley-system lift. There's
exposed brick, naked bulbs, cop-
per plumbing and brushed steel
electrical conduits that, instead of
being hidden away, are celebrated.
The result is like being inside a
living, breathing structure.

THE PRO FESSIONA L
On the upper floors of a
60s Bauhaus-inspired
block of flats, which over-
look the Company Gar-
dens and are just a short
walk away from Long
Street's nightlife, is
Aidan Bennetts' 48m2
studio apartment
Standing at the door you're
able to take everything in at a
glance: solid oak floor, metro tiles
and Caeserstone in the kitchen,
muted tones on the walls, and
then there's the furniture and
accessories, all of which have
Aidan's name on them. Literally.
Custom mirror, cardboard chan-
delier, flatpack desk, tree-trunk
pedestal, raw hide leather sofa
chairs, woven carpet... all Aidan
Bennetts designs.
While studying art at Michae-
lis he discovered that he could pay
his tuition by making furniture for
people. He started getting more
commissions to do this sor t of
thing and kept pushing until his
furniture had become product
design and a more practical appli-
cation of his art.
The small space celebrates
raw elements in their natural
state, textures that invite you to
touch and items that pay homage
to their materials. Visual clues
hint at what type of man lives
here: the pitch-black single-speed
bicycle hanging from a rack and in
contrast to the feature wall clad in
white polystyrene blocks, vases
from Hong Kong, a Marcel Duch-
amp print, large format coffee
table books on art and design,
wood carvings from his travels
in the East. ..
"Fourty-eight square metres
is pretty small, so the thought pro-
cess was to maximise the space.
I enjoy a 'less is more' approach,
so I've pared things down and
tried not to fal l into the trap of
clutter, limiting my possessions
to the essentials."
x
WHILE STUDY-
ING ART AT
MICHAELIS HE
DISCOVERED
THAT HE
COULD PAY
HIS TUITION
BY MAKING
FURNITURE
There isn't much storage
available, but some clever tricks
solved that - he's maximised the
space under the bed, pushed the
kitchen cupboards right up to the
ceiling (and adds a stool so you
can access them), a sliding door
that reveals a medicine cabinet
when the bathroom door is
closed, and a wardrobe is hidden
behind floor- to-ceiling mirrors.
Taking a cue from the fashion
world, people now see dressing
their homes up as important as
dressing themselves. Bennetts has
always enjoyed a DIY approach
and has made this his business.
"From aDIYpoint ofviewl
get a lot of enjoyment from the
process. The satisfaction of com-
pleting a project is huge. Not only
is it cheaper than paying someone
else to come in, there's also the
bragging rights and sense of own-
ership in doing something your-
self. But hey, if you don' t enjoy
doing it, that's fine, pay me to do
it, keep the economy going."
Right now Bennetts is doing
just that, working on a hotel, a
clothing store, as well as servicing
private clients. Use his tips in the
sidebar or checkout his website,
aidanbennetts.co.za
20 WAYS TO
MAN-UP
YOUR SPACE
START WITH BASIC ELEMENTS
Floor, walls, furniture and
accessories. In that order.
CHOOSE A COLOUR PALETTE
Masculine colours are sophis-
tacted and pared down. Oper-
ate in charcoals, greys and
whites and add your favourite
accent colour in bursts.
Lighter colours reflect light
and make a space look bigger.
Darker colours are warmer.
GET PERSONAL You should
have little clues about your
personality throughout. Items
that you feel comfortable with
and enjoy.
KEEP FURNITURE SIMPLE
Every item should be useful -
that is, it should only be a
part of your place if it serves
a function.
SELECT A STATEMENT PIECE
Could be a sofa, a coffee table,
whatever, but choose a piece
that reflects who you are and
work around that.
ACCESSORIES Move on to
your upholstered items,
antiqued leather would make
for a masculine space. These
are your statement pieces.
In the same way that you
dress yourself, the way you-
dress your room should
express your personality.
THINK ABOUT THE SPACE
Don' t furnish to fill a space,
furnish according to function.
USE MIRRORS They bounce
light and open up a space,
and are the best way to make
a room look bigger.
ASK FOR GLASS Introduce
windows and glass to open a
space up.
LIGHTING If you can hang
pendants they can demarcate
a space in the same way a wall
would, without shutting it off.
DE-CLUTTER Sure, showoff
your toys - but don't get
trapped putting everything
into your space. Your gear
can stay in the gar age.
DIY Don't be disheartened
if you don' t nail it first time
'round. DIY is about problem
solving and perseverance.
The trick is to keep trying.
Don' t stop because you've
failed the first time.
RUGS WARM A SPACE They
also denote space well.
Always go for something
real as opposed to synthetic.
Wool, shag, stuff that feels
good underfoot - or on her
bare back.
BOOKS SHOW OFF YOUR
INTERESTS AND YOUR PERSON-
ALITY Which reminds us of
that quote: "If you go home
with someone and they don' t
have any books, don't sleep
with them."
ADD GREEN STUFF Plants are
living, breathing elements
that make you take responsi-
bility for your living area and
bring life to your space.
TOOLBOX ESSENTIALS Posi-
Drive, regular and Phillips
screwdrivers, claw hammer,
spirit level, Stanley knife,
tape measure and a good
carpenter's pencil.
USE THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE
RIGHT JOB "Measure with
a micro-metre, mark with
chalk, cut with an axe."
WHEN LAYING FLOORS Jay
the length towards the light.
This opens up the space.
LOOK EAST The Chinese
will have a family of four
living in a studio apartment.
They use sliding partitions to,
say, transform a kitchen into
study. They're really smart
at making their spaces work
so much harder.
HIDE CABLES Useskirtingto

the wall. It'll look more organ-
ised and clean. EmJ

GO NUCLEAR
If you're only nuking leftover s, you're selling your
microwave short. The electromagnetic radiation can
act as a rapid-fire dehydrator, creating chef-worthy
garnishes far faster than your oven ever could.
HARVEST OUYE "SAll"
Intensify the inky colour and briny kick ofkalamata
olives by speed-drying pitted ones in your microwave.
HOW To MAKE IT Pop a few on a pl ate and nuke t hem
on high for 2-minute intervals until you can crush them
between your fingers. Use the robust seasoning as a
stand-in for sea salt on steak, roasted veget ables or fish.
CRISP PlATHOPPING PARSlEY
Any schmo can sprinkle herbs on a plate. For crunch
(and prestige factor), make flash-fried parsley.
How TO MAKE IT In a bowl, toss a small handful of parsley
leaves with 1 tsp of canola oil. Arrange the leaves 2cm
apart on a paper-towel-lined plate. Microwave a t 75%
power until crispy, 3 to 4 minutes. Let cool.
60 All CHEESY
Cheese is good. Melted cheese is even better. Cheese
that's been sizzled to a crisp, crackerlike texture? Money.
HOW TO MAKE IT Spread 2 to 3 tbsp of grated Parmesan
on a microwave-safe plate to form a lOcm round. Micro-
wave on 50% power until crispy, 60 to 90 seconds, and
peel it off when it's cool enough to handle.

much more than
mere saltiness. No

has the power of
humble salt to help
elevate your cook-

use the coarse
Maldon stuff to
transform salmon

next breakfast.

and 1 tbsp each of fennel
seeds, coriander seeds
and black peppercorns
until roughly ground.
Pro tip: don"t own a
grinder? Pour the spices
into a zip-lock bag and
bash away at them with
the bottom of a heavy pot
or frying pan.
Step2
In a medium bowl, com-
bine the ground spices
with the zest from half
a lemon and 2 tbsp of
vodka. Mix well.
Step3
Use paper towels to blot
dry a lkg boneless, skin-
on salmon fillet. Place
it skin side down on a
large piece of plastic
wrap. Spread the salt
mixture evenly over the
flesh side and top that
with half a bunch of fresh
dill. Wrap the salmon
tightly in plastic wrap
and place it, still skin
side down, on a baking
sheet lined with parch-
ment paper.
Step4
Rest another piece of
baking paper on top of
the wrapped salmon,
followed by another
baking sheet and two
bricks or large cans.
Refrigerate until the
salmon feels firm to
the touch, 48 to 72 hours,
depending on the thick-
ness of the fillet.
Steps
Remove the plastic wrap,
rinse the salmon under
cold water, and pat it dry
with paper towels. Slice
and serve, or refrigerate,
wrapped in plastic,
for up to 3 days.

spills red wine (or tomato
sauce) on your shirt, it's time
to take action. Remove the
shirt, lay it fl. at, and pour salt
on the stain. Wait 2 or 3
minutes so the salt has a
chance to pull out the stain.
Next, suck up the salt with a
handheld vacuum and throw
the shirt in the laundry. Oh,
and then make your friend
buy you another bottle of
wine. (Make it a white.)
.- SALT AS ... A COOKING MEDIUM
Baking certain foods - like
whole chicken, whole potatoes
and whole fish - in salt keeps
them moist. In a large bowl,
whisk 12 egg whites until
foamy, and then stir in lkg
of Maldon salt. (Halve this rec-
ipe if you're baking a small
amount.) Spread a l cm layer
of salt mixture onto a baking
sheet, add the food, and cover
with another lcm layer of salt
mixture. Bake the food as usual;
then let it rest 5 minutes. Crack
the salt crust, brush away the
excess salt, and serve.
., SALT AS ... A fLAVOUR CARRIER
Skip the expensive flavoured
salts and make your own house
seasoning: take a large, flaky
salt, such as Maldon, and pulse
it in a food processor with your
choice of minced garlic, grated
lemon peel, chopped herbs or
hot sauce - whatever flavour-
ings you love. Then let the mix-
ture dry on a paper towel for 12
hours. Store it in a ziplock bag
or resealable jar and use it to
season eggs, marinate chicken
or pork, or finish seared steak.
MACGYV ER YO UR BAR
There's no need to drain your drink budget to score superlative alcohol.
Not when you can improve your drinking by several orders of magnitude
with the help of horsepower, boiling water and a ball of string.
...
Hyper-decant wine
Aerating wine opens up the vino's aroma. Oenophiles do this by pouring it into a decanter, but you
can aerate with horsepower instead! Pour the wine into a blender and process it on high for 30 to 60
seconds. Wait for the foam to subside and serve.
Chill beer fast
Warm beer sucks. And your fridge sucks at chilling beer fast. Instead, add 1 tbsp of salt to a large bowl
of iced water and drop in your bottles. Salt lowers the freezing temperature of the water, creating a
more arctic environment for your brew .
Sip bar-worthy whisky on the rocks
Make ice with water from the tap and you'll end up with cloudy cubes. For crystal-clear ice, boil
the water first to eliminate the dissolved gases, and let the water cool before pouring it into trays.
Stage a rescue operation
If the wine cork breaks, fear not. Push the cork all the way into the bottle using the blunt end of a but-

THE 3-IN-1
MUSCLE PLAN
TRANSFORM YOUR ENTIRE BODY WITH THESE CUTTING-EDGE WORKOUTS
Bulking up and gaining definition don't have t o be opposing goals. "By pairing
big lower-body moves with intense upper-body circuits (and vice versa),
these workout s pack on size and strength while torching fat and boosting
endurance." says John Romaniello. owner of Roman Fitness Systems in
New York City. The combination of high- and low-rep sets also ensures that
no muscle fibre-fast or slow twitch -is left untouched. The result: a total-
body plan for building maximum muscle in minimal t ime.
DIRECTIONS
Complete each workout once a week, resting 2 days after each.
Perform the first exercise in each workout using breathing reps:
Trap Bar Dead Lift
Stand insi de a trap bar and grab the bar's handles
using a neutral grip (palms in) [A] . Without allowing
your lower back to round, pull your torso back and
up, thrust your hips forward, and stand up with the
bar [BJ. Return to the starting position. If your gym
has no trap bar. do a standard dead lift.
Barbell Squat
Hold a barbell across your back using an overhand
grip [AJ. Keeping your chest up and your lower
back naturally arched, push your hips back, bend
your knees, and lower your body until your thighs
are at least parallel to the floor [BJ. Pause, and
push back up to the starting position.
Choose a weight (or resistance band) that allows you to do only
12 to 15 reps, and then do them. Without letting go of the bar or
band, take two breaths and dolor 2 more reps. Continue until you reach 20, then rest
4 minutes. Do the second set of exercises as a circuit, moving from one to the next without
rest. Rest 2 minutes between circuits. Finish each workout with l set of the final exercise.
B
Tuck your elbows
so they form a
45-degree angle
wit h your body.
I
Resistance Band Push-up
Assume a push-up position with a resistance
band stretched across your back and looped
under each pal m [AJ. Lower your body until
your chest nearly touches the floor [B]. Pause,
and push yourself back up to the starti ng position
as qui ckly as possible.
B
Dumbbell Shoulder Press
Stand holding a pair of dumbbells just outside
your shoulders with your arms bent and your
palms facing each other [AJ. Press the weights
upward until your arms ar e completely str aight
[B]. Slowly lower the dumbbells back to the
starting position.
A
Pull-up
Hang from a chi n-up bar using an overhand grip
that's slightly beyond shoulder width [AJ. Pull
your chest to the bar [BJ. Once the top of your
chest t ouches it , pause, and slowly lower yourself
back to the starti ng position. (See the back page
of thi s poster for key form tips.)
Squeeze your
shoulder blades and
keep them tight for
the entire move.
Dumbbell Incline Bench Press
Set an adjustable bench to an incline of slightly
less than 45 degrees. Lie on your back and hold
a pair of dumbbells straight above your shoul ders
using an overhand grip [AJ. Lower the dumbbells
to your chest [BJ. Pause, and press them back
up to the starting position.

Seated Dumbbell Overhead
Triceps Extension
Sit upright on a flat bench cupping one end of
a dumbbell in both hands above your head [AJ.
Without moving your upper arms, lower the
dumbbell until your forearms are parallel to
the floor [BJ. Pause, and raise the dumbbell
back to the starting posi tion.

EXPRESS MUSCLE
When it comes to building a V-shaped torso,
few exercises compare to the pull-up.
"It rocks your entire upper body, including
your lat s, biceps, core, and middle and upper
back," says John Romaniello, owner of Roman
Fitness Systems in New York City. "It's also
a true test of both absol ute strength and
relat ive strength - or how strong you are
for your weight." Bottom line: a man who
can bang out doubl e-digit pull-ups is a man
who not only looks good with his shirt off but
also has the kind of strength that translates
beyond the gym. Follow these tips to achieve
perfect pull-up form.
0 SQUEEZE YOUR SHOULDER
BLADES TOGETHER
Most guys ignore their shoulders
whenever they perform pull-
ups. "That's a mi stake," says
Romaniello. "If you don't pull
your shoul der blades back and
down, you won't engage your
stabiliser muscles, and t hat
increases your risk of injury."
Squeezing your shoulder blades
together al so bett er engages
your lats, which are the primary
targets of t he exercise.
OTIGHTENUP
While you're at it, flex your glutes
and hamstrings, two of the most
important players in the powerful
"poster ior chai n" of muscles that
run along the back side of your
body. "If your core and posterior
chain are stable, you'll sway
less, preventing energy leaks
and boosting your pulling power,"
says Romaniello.
O LIFT YOURSELF HIGHER
A better name for the pull-up
might be the chest-up, because
your chest should touch the bar.
Doi ng this increases t he range of
motion of the exercise, engaging
more of the muscles that surround
your shoulder blades, says Rom-
aniello. Hit the mark more often
by imagining you' re pulling the
bar to your chest i nstead of your
chest to the bar.
0 RETURN TO A DEAD HANG
"People often use momentum
from the last rep to propel
themselves back up," says
Romaniello. "That's cheating."
Lower yourself until your arms
are completely straight, and
then hang like that for 2 seconds
before starting your next rep .
This increases the difficul ty -
and muscle-building potential.
