Veterans in Washington County

County office assists veterans with seeking benefits

MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The regional Veterans Administration (VA) office in Milwaukee is helping the federal agency address a backlog of claims nationwide, according to Mark Baldwin Jr., officer for the Washington County Veterans Service Office. Baldwin updated the Washington County Board on veterans-related activities June 11. Baldwin said the VA shipped in 6,000 claims which are more than 18 months old from Houston and Los Angeles to the Milwaukee regional office to increase the overall turnaround. That is going to slow down how we take care of our veterans here. Were going to see a slowdown in our processing of claims here in Wisconsin, Baldwin said. Baldwin added that county veterans agency staff will have to be accredited with the federal Veterans Administration in order to access the federal agency's documents online. Having staff accredited will greatly improve our ability to respond to veterans and their dependents in a timely fashion, Baldwin stated in a written report to the board. According to the written report, there were an estimated 9,206 veterans in the county as of 2012. Veterans in the county accounted for $14.4 million in Veterans Administration compensation, pension and insurance, $34.9 million in VA home activity, and there are 4,893 veterans buried within the county borders. The county office is responsible for assisting Washington County veterans and their families in obtaining state or federal veterans benefits to which each veteran is entitled due to active military service, according to the mission statement at the beginning of the written report. According to the written report, the three goals for the county agency this year are providing direct outreach to returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, participating in events that are most beneficial to our veterans when our resources permit and beginning the federal accreditation of county staff. According to the written report, the goal of the county agency was to receive $31,042 in state benefits for 2012, a figure which was based on the county having 2.28 percent of the states veterans population. The county received $6,868 in benefits. Supervisor Mike Miller asked

Baldwin what the board needs to get done to increase the amount. Baldwin replied that the amount of benefits the state used to offer is decreasing and many of the dollars are need-based. He said most of the benefits that previously came to the county were through loans and home applications. However, Baldwin said both of those programs have been suspended by the state.

WEST BEND POLICE BLOTTER

The following report was taken from records at the West Bend Police Department. Disorderly conduct A 34-year-old West Bend man was arrested for disorderly conduct at 10:45 a.m. June 3 after causing a disturbance at a residence on the southeast side of the city. An investigation revealed the man had gone to the residence of two sisters, seeking a bag of marijuana. One of the women asked the man to leave, but he refused. The subject was placed in jail. Domestic violence A 32-year-old West Bend man was arrested for disorderly conduct/domestic violence at noon June 9 after pushing his girlfriend during an argument at their residence on the southeast side of the city. He was placed in jail. Drug possession A 26-year-old West Bend man was arrested for possession of a controlled substance-Suboxone, possession of drug paraphernalia and bail jumping at 9:34 a.m. June 5 after drugs were located in his room by Youth & Family Project employees. Retail theft A 30-year-old West Bend man was arrested for retail theft at 2:02 p.m. June 4. The man had been observed at Aldi, 1114 S. Main St., placing items in his backpack. When he noticed he was being watched, he returned the items and left the store. The man was later located and placed in jail on an order to detain.

Landscape Exhibit at Schauer Center on display through June 30

The Schauer Arts & Activities Center is proud to host an exhibit of watercolor paintings by Everett Powell now through Sunday, June 30 in the Suckow Family Art Gallery. The exhibition features a collection of primarily landscapes, focusing on the arrangement of farm buildings and rural scenes, as well as urban architectural scenes, people, and abstracts. Everett Powell is a retired landscape architect with a passion for watercolor painting. In 1981, while working full time, he started painting after attending an adult watercolor class offered by the Kettle Moraine Technical Institute. Powell retired in 2007 and decided to pursue his passion with a dedicated effort to become a professional painter and built a studio in Richfield. While still considered realistic paintings, Powells bold landscapes of rural, shoreline, and urban scenes offer dramatic abstractions of color, shapes, and contrasts. A frequent award winner, Powell is a member of the Cedarburg Artists Guild, Museum of Wisconsin Art, Milwaukee Art Museum, the Wisconsin Regional Artists Association, the Wisconsin Watercolor Society, and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. The Suckow Family Art Gallery is located on the second level of the Schauer Center at 147 N. Rural Street in downtown Hartford. Who will stand up for me?

By Ann Bare "Oh dear," you think to yourself. "My sister gets cranky so easily. My best friend, although I love her dearly, is unpredictable and undependable. I have some friends from school, but we rarely talk and really only keep in touch through Facebook. My coworkers are becoming friendlier, but we are not what I would call friends yet. I'm getting married in six months and I want to have a stress-free wedding. Whom do I choose to be in my wedding party?" It's not always possible to select the "perfect" attendants. Personalities, traditions, expectations and cultural mores can influence a bride's choice of her maid or matron of honor and her bridesmaids. There are those who expect to be asked to be in your wedding; after all, you were in theirs. Your sisters and closest cousins would be natural choices-especially to Mom and sweet Auntie. Your best friend and you pinky-swore years ago that you would be at each other's side, but now her life decisions are not making her a suitable choice. The hard-to-decide task just got more difficult. So whose wedding is it anyway? You want to look back on this day and have pleasant memories so make your decisions accordingly. What do you want to remember? Pasted smiles on an array of size 3 gals and tuxedoed handsome men flanking a radiant couple? The hope of having your wedding photo featured in the hometown paper's next bridal insert? Beautifully coiffed hairstyles and tiny ankles beneath tea-length dresses? What will really make your day happily memorable? Do you even have to have attendants? Centuries ago the role of the maid of honor or bridesmaid was to attend to the bride several days before her wedding; an additional role of attendants, both bridesmaids and groomsmen, was to dress similarly to the wedded couple in order to confuse evil spirits or jealous suitors who might try to sabotage the wedding or in some way harm the couple. Thankfully, the duties have become less risky and demanding and may be as simple as signing as a witness to the marriage. (Because state laws vary, verify how many witnesses' signatures are needed on the marriage certificate.) In selecting whom you will ask to stand up for you at your wedding, first share your concern with your fiance and consider his input. Then consider those who are dear to you and whom you respect. The person whom you select should see the opportunity as both an honor and a privilege to be standing at your side. Perhaps there is an older woman whose marriage you admire. Maybe your childhood friend would laugh with you before, during and after the ceremony, adding to a life full of meaningful experiences. Perhaps your sister has become the trusted confidante you have come to appreciate and she would be the "perfect" choice. Perhaps a male friend would serve as your bridesman (with your fiance's approval, of course). The choice is yours. The goal of your bridal party selection is to enhance your memorable day with favorable circumstances and experiences. Choose wisely...and enjoy your day!

Prep baseball: Germantown rallies to beat Slinger

Slinger was on the wrong end of a Germantown rally as the Warhawks scored six runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 10-9 win June 18. Slinger held a 5-2 lead after three innings and scored three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. But Germantown followed with six runs in the fourth inning including a grand slam by Blake Fleischman and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Slinger added one run in the seventh inning before Germantown closed out the win. Afterward, Slinger was seventh in the North Shore Conference with a 4-5 record and a 10-7 overall mark. West Bend West beat host Grafton June 18, 6-2. Jacob Droese recorded five strikeouts with no walks for West. Afterward, the Spartans were fifth in the North Shore with a 44 record and 8-4 overall mark. West Bend East lost to Homestead June 18, 2-1. Afterward, East was sixth in the North Shore with a 5-6 record and a 8-9 overall mark.

Music in Me tour features 21 singer/dancers and a 12-piece show. The KIDS from Wisconsin program was developed in 1969 under the sponsorship of the Wisconsin State Fair. KIDS now functions as a non-profit corporation with the Fair and InPro Corp. of Muskego as its major sponsors. Former KID Mark Dorn has served as the Producer since 1996, bringing 25 years of experience as an educator and professional musician. Choreographer Jessica Foley and Choral Director/Chief Orchestrator Taras Nahirniak help lead the artistic and tour staffs, which continue to put out fresh shows each summer. matter to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve the soil as they decompose. Keep your plants blooming and looking their best in spite of the heat, humidity and pests of summer. Immunize your plants against common environmental stresses such as heat and drought, while building their defenses against insects and diseases natural defenses with an organic plant strengthener, such as JAZ Rose Spray (gardeners.com). Researchers discovered when some plants are stressed they produce hundreds of molecules that help them better tolerate environmental stresses as well as insect and disease attacks. When applied to plants in the form of a plant strengthener, the treated plants improve their own defenses, much like immunizations do for us. Gardeners will notice less damage from stress, better recovery, reduced yellow leaves, and healthier plants overall. Proper fertilization will help keep roses healthy and producing lots of flowers. A soil test is the best way to determine how much and what type of fertilizer is best for roses growing in your landscape. Check your plants throughout the season for signs of insects and disease. Early detection makes control easier. Remove insects or infested plant parts when discovered. Look for the most eco-friendly control options when intervention is needed. Enjoy your efforts and improve your roses appearance by harvesting a few rosebuds for indoor enjoyment. Prune flowering stems back to the first 5-leaflet leaf. You can prune back farther on established plants, but be sure to always leave at least two 5-leaflet leaves behind on the plants stem. Those gardening in cold climates should stop deadheading roses toward the end of the season. Allow the plants to develop rose hips. This helps the plants prepare for the cold weather ahead and increases hardiness. Plus, these red to orange fruits provide winter food for birds as well as attractive winter interest in the garden.
