Bayshore Home Health will be taking over health care delivery for Wheatland Lodge and home care services within Wheatland County as of July 31 this year. Twyla Lyle, area director for Bayshore, met with staff on June 10 and residents at the Lodge on June 11 to discuss their involvement. Bayshore is one of the four providers selected by the provincial government. Lyles office is located in the Calgary area. We have been contracted by Alberta Health Services (AHS) to provide home care delivery in Wheatland County and at the Wheatland Lodge. We are hoping to make the transition as seamless as possible, said Lyle. Home care services previously provided by Calgary Family Services are now contracted to Bayshore. At Wheatland Lodge, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Shirley Reinhardt said it is business as usual. She will remain as CAO and Vicki Cook stays as resident manager, with Bayshore taking over just the contract for Health Care delivery minutes. Everything remains basically the same, said Reinhardt, who wants to put community rumours to rest. She said the Lodge is not closing, the building still belongs to Wheatland County and they still provide dietary and housekeeping services. Staff remain under their CUPE contract, which comes up for renewal on July 31. Lyle offered all jobs at Wheatland Lodge and home care in Wheatland County to current staff first, should they decide to choose working for Bayshore. Lyle said wages and benefits are comparable to other private services. Lyle anticipates she will call a community open house, at a later date, to answer questions from any concerned community members. Health care service delivery minutes are looked after by Alberta Health Services, falling under Supportive Living Accommodations Licensing Act. (See: www. health.alberta.ca/services/supportive-living-guide. html). Two AHS nurses have been contracted to work in the Lodge with clients and their families, to develop core plans for their health care needs and level of care. Cook will continue to be responsible for new client intake and resident management. We will be acting as watchdogs for the care and safety of our residents, said Reinhardt about her and Cooks continued vigilance over the residents. Reinhardt anticipates there will be more information about how accountability will be ensured and offered to the community as the transition continues.. Lyle has indicated that the companys interaction goal with families, clients and the community is for clarity and transparency. Reinhardt said she has been surprised and impressed with the quality of interactions so far. Continued on Page 2

TIPS Strathmore teen publishes 1st book

Shannon LeClair Times Times Since Grade 2 Strathmore teen Danielle Hauck has wanted to be a writer, and now seven years later she can proudly say she has published her first book. I think it was because I read Harry Potter. It was on the table one day and I was bored, I picked it up, started reading (and) never looked back. I mean its such an amazing book it inspired me, said Hauck. Shanna Burns, Haucks Language Arts teacher at Holy Cross Collegiate, helped her put the book together. Hauck isnt sure she could have accomplished this goal so soon without Burns help. I am so proud of Danielles hard work and endless hours of writing and editing, to complete her dream of publishing a novel. She truly has a talent for writing and I do not feel that I Didnt Know: A Purgatory Story

will be her last published work, said Burns. Because of Danielles accomplishment, many other students have come forward with dreams of publishing their fictional novels. Starting next year Holy Cross Collegiate will be holding a competition where one winning student will also have the opportunity to publish his/her book. Haucks book begins with a woman whose family died in 9/11 in the year before. She is still trying to recover from the loss and is trying to regain her life and her normalcy by getting back into work and her life. But then on her way to work that day she gets into a car accident with this little girl, and she kills the little girl and she dies too, said Hauck. So then theyre in purgatory and she meets the little girl and they talk. She also meets other people there and she decides that she wants to try and find her family. She goes on this big and wild adventure. Hauck said the idea came to her one day when she was bored and thinking of different things. When she started typing it up she was busy with sports, but other than that she was usually on the computer writing. She had hoped to one day print a book, but didnt ever think it would be this soon. Not this young, I had hoped that I would, and I had dreamt one day I would see my book in printing but I

never thought it would be so soon, said Hauck. Since March, when the book was released, Hauck has sold 34 copies. After spending time researching, she decided to go the self-publishing route, and her book can be bought off of Blurb at (http://www.blurb. ca/b/4165957-i-didn-t-know) for $15.

Resident care and safety remains a priority

Continued from Page 1 Bayshore Home Health employs over 10,000 employees all over North America and has been in the Health Care industry for 47 years, 25 of them in Canada. In 2011, the company made annual revenues of just over $452,000,000. Lyle stated Alberta Health Services will be paying for client costs in a manner similar to what was done in the past. Internet reviews of the company list positive and negative comments (see www.bayshorehomehealth.com, www. rateyouremployer and www.indeed. com for just a few). Some of the negative comments revolved around staff complaints and complaints regarding hours limited to casual on-call basis, so benefits did not have to be paid. When asked about the negative comments, Lyle responded that complaints were minimal and with so many staff company-wide, it is reasonable to think there will be a few grievances. At a recent rally held in Strathmores Kinsman Park, Jason Hale, MLA for Strathmore Brooks said he was not necessarily opposed to private care for seniors, as long as excellent care standards were maintained. Hale is advocating for improved regulations for privately run facilities, similar to

He said if community members have concerns about care, to come and see him at the constituent office. Community members voiced their concerns at the rally, regarding standards in privately run homes over public care. The preference voiced was to keep the Lodge, Extended Care and home care services publically run. The public are asking for improved regulations for privately run homes in the following areas: improvements to the current staff to patient ratios, hours of care per patient better wages and benefits for staff more qualified staff and staff training programs better nutrition and good variety of fresh, palatable food patient safety and protection, advocacy for those who have no family interaction, better emergency response and registered nurses on site 24 hours accountability and prosecution for neglect better communication with family members improved socialization and recreation opportunities

RCMP host community event

The Strathmore RCMP held their first open house on June 15. The event was a way to help the public get to know their local RCMP members better. Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly estimates that between 1,300 to 1,500 people attended the event. People came from Lethbridge, Calgary, and Red Deer specifically to attend the open house, and others did too once they heard about it made the trek over.

Chief Supt. Kevin Harrison, centre, along with Mayor Steve Grajczyk (l- r), MLA Jason Hale, and Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly thanked Andrea Henry, who turned in a wallet with close to $1,000 in it, with a District Officers Certificate of Appreciation for the selfless act.

Joyland theatre embraces digital age

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Joyland Theatre has undergone a makeover this past week, bringing the theatre into the 21 Century. The theatre, which has been owned by Sheila and Bill Crispin since 1978, is going completely digital with a new screen and new sound system. We had no choice because 35mm is gone, they are making no more movies in film, the good old days are long gone, said Sheila Crispin. Its going to be easier but were going to miss it because thats another piece of history thats gone. Itll be good, a lot less work and easier for basically anybody to run. With the digital format the time to start the movie can be programmed into the computer. It will then come on the screen every single night at that exact time it is programmed to, whether someone if there to operate it or not said Crispin. Joyland was only closed for a few days for the upgrades to be completed, and by June 21, the doors will open and people will get a chance to check out the changes. The first one on digital will be Fast and Furious 6, said Crispin about which movie will make the digital debut at Joyland. For now the price to see a movie at Joyland Theatre will remain the same. Its $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children. The theatre is closed on Monday nights, and Tuesdays are cheap night with tickets for only $7.

Poker run still going strong

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter For the past 14 years members of the bike community have gathered together to participate in a good cause aimed at helping kids. The Strathmore Poker Run was an idea sparked by Matt Janzen. The first year of the Poker Run, Janzen raised approximately $800. In the first few years the money initially went to ChildFind Canada and The Childrens Wish Foundation. The record year for the Strathmore Poker Run was in 2011 when they raised $21,600. Unfortunately Janzen has not been able to see how well his initiative has grown. He passed away from cancer in 2003. Hes the one that started the Poker Run and then after he died we went strictly to kid cancer because he was a cancer survivor himself, for a while, and he was affected by the children hed seen in the hospital. After he became ill (again) we made a decision that wed carry on without himand once he passed on we just took it, said Sandy Scobie, current president of the Strathmore Poker Run committee. Since 2003 the Poker Run has raised over $135,000 for Kids Cancer Care of Alberta. The Poker Run consists of a ride through surrounding communities gathering cards to build a poker hand. Then there is a party, dinner and concert that evening. On the Sunday there is a bike rodeo with a keg toss, barrel races and other bike rodeo style events. There will be silent and live auctions and two bands performing throughout the weekend. One year participants of the Poker Run had a chance to meet a young boy who they had directly helped. His parents had brought him out to meet everyone and Scobie remembers he wanted to sit on the red motorcycle. To directly see what our hard work does and the raising of the money, thats fulfilling. Raising money for Kids Cancer is the most satisfying thing I have ever done, said Scobie. This years event brings with it a chance to win $10,000 for the poker hand. There will be a chance to enter into a trip give away at one of the stops on the poker run, and much more. Were hoping for the nice weather. Were excited this year because we get to stay one more night too because of the long weekend, said Scobie. The Strathmore Poker run T-Shirts this year will have the Canada flag on the back, since the run is happening over the Canada Day weekend. June 28 at 6 p.m. is the head shave at the King Eddy, and Scobie said two local girls will be getting their heads shaved. Registration for the Poker Run starts at 9 a.m. at the Strathmore Station on June 29. Anyone looking to sponsor or donate can contact Sandy Scobie at 403-901-4021.

Its important that diabetics be familiar with the ABCs of diabetes. These are A1C test, Blood pressure and Cholesterol. The A1C is a blood test to see how good your diabetes management has been for the past 3 months. The goal is to keep it below 7. Keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol readings as low as possible will also keep diabetic complications at bay. Speaking of blood pressure, five million Canadians have high blood pressure. This represents 19% of the adult population. Since you cant feel high blood pressure, its important to have it checked regularly. High blood pressure can do damage to the body and increase the probability of getting diabetes and heart problems. Health Canada says a drug is OK for use in Canada based on all the information available about that drug at the time. After release, some information about the drug may surface that wasnt in the original submission. Patients can help by reporting any adverse effects to their doctor and pharmacist. These health professionals can report to Health Canada to add to the drug database. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a problem many men are hesitant to talk about. The internet is full of ads promising solutions but content of these products is dubious and may even contain prescription medications. Best advice? Talk to your doctor to determine the cause of ED and best treatment for you. Good advice: Before you take it, talk about it. Our pharmacists are always available to talk to you about medications.

Ethics code comes to town staff

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Town council considered and accepted the application of a staff code of ethics and conduct, on June 5 in Council Chambers. Administration has developed a Code of Ethics and Conduct Policy, something we havent had in the past, said Linda Nelson, deputy chief administration officer who put the document forward for councils review and acceptance. The guidelines define the manner of conduct expected from staff and give a process for reporting allegations and breaches in the code. It also offers protection in situations requiring anonymity. The code expects staff members will behave in a manner that reflects respect, common sense, good judgement and discreation. Discrimination, bullying, harrassment, or violence arent tolerated. Staff will be made aware of the policy and the process to report breaches. The code is based on respect for race, color, religious beliefs, age, gender, sexuality, marital status, disabilites, place of origin and income. Second language learning

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor A small crowd of women gathered to take their Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment testing, held at the Lambert Centre on June 14. The testing assesses their language skills allowing facilitators to fit them with an appropriate LINC home study program to improve their skills. In 2011, approximately six per cent, or 770 of Strathmores 12,275 residents spoke a mother tongue other than English or French. The top four nonofficial mother tongue languages were Tagalog, German, Spanish and Dutch, said Teri McKinnon, Regional Lead for Bow Valley College Education and Development Department. Some of the ideas in the text are to: make the community family friendly for immigrant families; have business or employment opportunities and support; have transportation assistance available so they can reach jobs or major employment and health care centres; have good, affordable housing available; improve community resources like language training and library materials in their own language; conduct cross cultural programs, so residents more readily accept and understand different cultures. Letters to the editor

Strathmore really is a great town!

To the Editor This is in response to the articles in the May 31 edition regarding downtown revitalization. In the early 1900s, entrepreneurs set up businesses along the main route into Strathmore leading to the train station and the grain elevators to give them the best possible exposure to travelers in and out of Strathmore. Today, that traffic is located on the highway, so it only makes sense that certain businesses have moved over there. We should count ourselves lucky to be among the few Alberta communities who are situated on the well-travelled Trans-Canada Highway. Highway travelers have played a very important role in the health of Strathmores economy, providing the opportunity for a variety businesses to thrive in addition to the usual southern Alberta suspects of oil and gas and agriculture. What I see in the Strathmore of 2013 is a fantastic range of business diversity. We are home to a wide variety of thriving businesses, and we have the good fortune to be able to accommodate a wide variety of business needs. Need the space of an industrial park, the visibility of a downtown, or lots of parking and highway accessibility? Weve got you covered! Jim Wark, in the Remembering Our Roots article, brings forward something that I am sure is on the mind of many local residents: Hes concerned at the number of businesses moving away from downtown to be closer to the highway, and the arrival of big box stores. What will these businesses do, if/when the TransCanada is moved south to bypass our town? I personally dont think this will be as big of a problem as it seems. The purpose of bypassing the town is to make the Trans-Canada into a freeway with no stops, thus expediting our main east-west travel route across the province. I dont believe putting in commerce zones where the traffic is slowed so vehicles can exit and return to the highway to visit businesses is part of the plan. For better or worse, I dont think Strathmore businesses will actually have the option to relocate along the freeway. I think it will look a lot like Stoney Trail. When we travel west towards Calgary, we have the choice to take the longer, but faster, ring road around Calgary, or to go straight through the middle of Calgary on 16th Avenue. There are no businesses on the ring road and the least amount of on ramps and exits possible. Has there been any discernible decrease in commerce for Calgary businesses since the ring road has been established? It will still be very worthwhile for highway travelers to continue straight through to Strathmore to get their gas, eat meals, pickup camping supplies, etc. than to take the detour south and try to get those things as quickly and easily once they are in Calgary. A quick survey for Strathmore businesses: 1) Are your customers stocking up on supplies? Are they often just passing through, buying food or gas, or need a place to sleep during their roadtrip? Then your business could probably benefit from having access to the highway. 2) Does your business employ trades-people, do you have service trucks or large equipment, do you require outdoor storage, do your customers often need a truck to take their purchases home? Then your business would probably benefit from being located in an industrial park. 3) Do your customers book an appointment to utilize your services? Are your customers local residents who have a membership, file, or account with you? Then your business would probably benefit from being downtown (or in one of the many other locations around town where businesses can be found in highly visible clusters). The highway is not the enemy. It is just one piece of the economic puzzle that makes up Strathmore. Maybe a question we should be asking is why some of the category three businesses (see survey above) have moved to the highway? If non-local highway travelers dont make up a large portion of their clientele, what was the appeal? Is it the lack of energy efficient, right-sized buildings in the downtown? I dont think a town-enforced theme for building facades is the answer. When you look at the businesses that have been built downtown recently (Im thinking the GregoryHarriman building, Chinook Credit Union, Aztec Realty), there are some really impressive structures, and each very unique. Are we ready to see the downtown change? Will there be a protest if the buildings that continually lie vacant are knocked down to make way for more modern, business friendly-buildings or amenities for the community? What if, instead of being The Village That Moved we became The Community That Moves? Moves with the times, moves physically in our many recreation and sporting amenities. We all know the appeal that Strathmore holds as a place that is small, but not too small, and big, but not too big. When you grow up in and around (hey Lyalta!) Strathmore, you can make the junior varsity team, write a meaningful letter to the editor, buy pretty much anything, know people in the newspaper and parade, and ... youre never more than a five minute drive from a swimming pool, ice rink, golf course, etc. Strathmore really is a great town. Parenting for dummies (and that was me!)

Pat Fule Fule for Thought Raising kids is a very tough task. You can say goodbye to sleep-filled nights, you get thrown up on, and you deal with a LOT of crying! You also suffer every cut and scrape, whether its physical, or emotional. What Ive also discovered is that theres no finish line for feeling like a parent. In fact Debbies late grandmother, who was in her 90s at the time, worried and fretted over her 75 year old son when he got a hip replacement! Youd think at some point, the worrying would end, but I guess it doesnt. Ive started to remember some of the odd and funny moments of parenting. Im sure youve all had many of your own, and sometimes we dont always know what were doing! For starters, about three years ago, I was reading a Readers Digest article on parents educating kids on the negative side of drinking alcohol. One of the things it mentioned was that you should never have your child get you any alcohol, like a beer. Huh, I did that as a young dad! I mean, I thought I was helping my kids learn their letters! Id say Breanne (or Brennen) can you get daddy and his friend a cold beer from the fridge? Its the one that starts with C for Canadian! I thought this would help them you know C for Canadian, K for Kokanee! AND, to help with their Math, Id sometimes get them to find, and count the rabbits on a Pilsner bottle! It seemed like an easy way to help with the start of their Education. Not only that, but Bree has worked at BPs in the summers of her University years, so Id like to think I got her started in the Service Industry! Theyd even learn about helping the environment, when theyd help recycle those cans and bottles! I did let them split the proceeds if they helped, so they also learned about finances. To me, it was a win all the way around! Sometimes the lessons taught by a parent have to be tough ones. One scorching hot day, we went for slurpees in our new to us Oldsmobile. All the way home, Brennen whined about wanting his slush. Deb stayed quite calm, and I was getting pretty upset. Thats where a three year old Brennen got a harsh lesson, that he still remembers. As he climbed out of his car seat, he met Deb on the driveway. She asked, do you still want your slush Brennen? Through his upset tears and whining, he nodded fiercely. Well here it is, Brennen! With that, Debbie dumped his slush on the driveway! She told him sternly that he had to learn to be patient, and that he shouldnt be yelling at us to get what he wants. There were more tears as we went into the house, and after awhile, we both explained why that was done. The next day, he sat quietly waiting in the back seat for his slurpee, and never uttered a peep! The Jr. High years are tough on a parent. No matter who you are, kids test limits, and you suddenly go from a cool dad, to Public Enemy Number 1. When I drove Bree to school, I was not to drop her off too close, and especially not near her friends! It was a tough thing to deal with, and there were many battles through those war years. I cant remember what caused it, but I had decided at some point, enough was enough! For whatever reason, I had decided Breanne was not going to have the shelter of her room. Oh sure, The Beach Boys sang about In My Room, but that was going to change. So I took a hammer and screwdriver, and took off her door. For about a week, her privacy was gone, and the moods started to change! Im not saying it was a cure-all, but it did surprise the heck out of her! Keep em off balance! Speaking of surprises, Brennen and I got in to a heated argument one day while he was a high school student. Hes 24 now, and Ive really come to respect him as a very strong minded person who knows right from wrong. However, this one day, we were verbally battling hard, and I was getting more and more frustrated. Finally, I yelled out: if I had a condom that one day, we wouldnt be arguing right now!! He was stunned we stared at each other, and he said quietly, you cant say that to your kid can you? We both actually laughed, and whatever was the focus of the battle was gone! I sure dont want to pass myself off as a parent who has all the answers. We all make it up as we go, as far as raising kids, and there are always surprises. If it feels bad, just keep hanging in there they break away from you for a while, but they find their way back, and that is the best feeling in the world!

Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools welcome new associate superintendent

Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools welcomes Bonnie Annicchiarico as associate superintendent, July 1. Currently a principal at St. Josephs Collegiate in Brooks, Annicchiarico has been an educator for more than 30 years, and has been St. Josephs principal for 17 years. Scott Morrison, Christ the Redeemer superintendent, said Annicchiarico has a special gift for sharing leadership with those she serves, and that shes highly respected by her colleagues in administration. Above all, he said, Annicchiarico views all issues through the lens of her deep faith. Annicchiarico, wholl complete her doctorate from the University of Calgary this summer, said her studies have emphasized how critical it is for us as leaders to live our faith in (our) interactions. My faith is the perspective I bring to all of my interactions and everything I do in my life, and so that begins with relationships with other people. Im excited to see other teachers and leaders in our school have a chance to take on leadership roles. Annicchiarico brings to her new role a broad background as a Language Arts teacher, particularly in Junior High and with those whose first language is not English. Literacy is a focus in our school division too and one of my particular passions, she said. Especially reaching the adolescent readers and writers, and those that might be at risk or reluctant. I really love working with parents. I often will turn to parents and go, What Erosion Control should we do about this? And the more we do that, the stronger our education system will be. In everything, Annicchiaricos desire to serve shines through. I just want to give back in whatever way I can to the schools, she said. Schools are there to support parents, and parents are there to support schools. Ive experienced that partnership (as a parent), so I hope I can be a part of reinforcing other parents who are now raising their children. Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools serves over 9,300 students in 18 schools, in Okotoks, High River, Strathmore, Brooks, Canmore, Drumheller, and Oyen.

Standard Kindergarten students learn Who are the People in Your Neighbourhood
Standard Kindergarten teacher Deb Klics along with her 22 students and parent volunteers made their way into Strathmore for a morning of exploring. The students went to Dairy Queen to learn about the business and were treated in making their own soft serve cones. They also visited the local Calgary Co-op where they learned about the bakery department and watched how they prepared and decorated birthday cakes. At the Co-op they sampled cheese and pepperoni sticks with the girls from the deli. After, they had a picnic lunch at Kinsmen Park and hamburgers from A&W they returned to Standard to watch the school play.

To the many, many people who came & judged public speaking & also our sheep show, thank you. Sometimes it was with very short notice & everyone was always so kind in helping out & for many of you more than once. The time you took to come help the members was greatly appreciated. To the long time faithful sponsors as well as the new sponsors of awards, thank you. Your support was always appreciated. To all the buyers who supported the sale & purchased lambs, many of you for numerous years, thank you. The members were always very well taken care of because of the generous buyers. To all the leaders we have had the pleasure of working with throughout the years, thank you. We have all learned a lot from you & had a lot of fun along the way. To the parents of the members of the Standard 4-H Club, what a pleasure it has been to get to know you

all & work together to help put on all the activities we got to do. To the members we have been lucky enough to get to know through the last 11 years. Thanks for all the great memories. What a great bunch of kids we have had the pleasure of getting to know & work with. Wow, we have shared in a lot of different things through the years & loved every minute. It has been an honor to be part of the 4-H program & especially the Standard club. What makes 4-H so great is all the wonderful people you get to know, the people that love to come & help judge events, give workshops, sponsor awards, buy lambs, help as leaders, volunteer as parents always do, & of course the kids. The list of names that covers all these people is a very big one & we didnt want to take a chance & miss anyone - we hope you all know who you are. Thanks again for everyones help & support throughout the years & thanks for all the great memories.

Peril of wearing two hats

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Miscommunication stirred reaction to repeated reprisals between councillors in County council chambers June 10, over an incident surrounding dignitary seating at the RCMP regimental ball held in Gleichen on May25. He called me a liar not once but twice, in council chambers, said Councillor Alice Booth, who said she felt attacked. Booth said it was not the first time she had felt bullied by male members of council in public and in camera meetings. She said she felt the time had come to address the behaviour. She also said it was inappropriate to bring the matter to the public forum. His accusations took a lovely event and made it ugly, said Booth. Booth was referring to Councillor Ken Sauve, who accused Booth of lying when she said she was not asked to sit at the head table for the event. Reeve Glenn Koester addressed Sauve and said that Booth had been on the organizing committee. Councillor Sauve confirmed in council that it was a nice event, but said it was not the first time Booth had lied to him. No discussion followed on why it was important, whether Booth was or was not asked to sit at the head table. There was no indication from the Reeve, that Sauves statement should be clarified or withdrawn, which Booth said implied that the men felt this was acceptable behavior. As per County policy, Sauve asked council to approve payment for Reeve Koesters ticket and mileage for attending an event out of his district, as he did sit at the head table. It was approved. It was not handled well at all, but thats how the new Reeve does things, said Booth. Sauve was later contacted for clarification, and he preferred not to comment. Vice President of the Gleichen and District Community Association Doris Lindman said the community association had been asked by Staff Sgt. James McLaren to cater to the event. We hadnt had a regimental ball for a long time and we thought we would bring the tradition back, and help Victim Services at the same time. It was a way to engage the community by holding it in Gleichen, said McLaren. We approached the community association to cater the event. An organizing committee was struck composed of Staff Sgt. James McLaren, one other RCMP officer, Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society Program Coordinator Leslie Hering, Doris Lindman, and Councillor Alice Booth, who was contributing her talent as a member of the association. It was McLarens role to choose dignitaries and seating plans for the head table, and Hering sent out letters of request. Lindman and Booth organized the community association members, cooked, catered the event and decorated the hall. This was not our function, but the RCMPs function, so we acquiesced to the RCMPs requests, said Lindman. It was not a county event, nor was it a community association event. Following RMCP protocols for formal dinners, McLaren chose several dignitaries for the head table. A letter of invitation was sent out to the dignitaries, along with the many invitations sent to officials and important supporters. One was sent to the County of Wheatland inviting the Reeve and council members to attend the ball. When McLaren had not had confirmation on who was attending, he asked Lindman to call to see who was going to attend. Both the MLA and MP declined. Lindman said along with the callbacks, she called Sauve, and again invited him and his wife to attend, should they be pleased to do so. When several of the chosen dignitaries cancelled and others hadnt replied, McLaren was getting worried. He asked Booth if she would consider sitting at the head table, if necessary. Booth said she really did not want to, as she had to take care of the cooking and kitchen duties. McLaren said he thought she would have agreed to sit at the head table if they needed her to, in the event no dignitaries appeared. Fortunately, several of the requested dignitaries confirmed their attendance at the last minute, including Reeve Glenn Koester. Councillor Sauve and his wife did buy a ticket and attended the event. McLaren confirmed that Sauve had come to see him after the event and discussed the situation. McLaren was under the impression that Sauve was satisfied with the discussion and answers received. Lindman heard about Sauves statement in Council. She said if members of the provincial and federal government were not allowed to use such statements in the Legislature and House of Commons, Sauve should not be calling people liars in Council Chambers either.

Ears to hear
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Kneehill County Councillors passed the building of the Badlands Motorsport Resort Area Structure Plan (ASP) through second reading on June 6, regardless of standing room only crowds and overwhelming opposition by residents and ratepayers. Think of the tidal wave of opposition that has come in through letters and the people that have appeared here today. said Joel Stefanishion. This is an island in a sea of opposition, said Jim Clark. Kneehill County Councillor Brian Holsworth said the residents deserved a definitive answer right away; however, Councillor Ken Hoppins and several others wanted more time to deliberate. The vote went ahead and the result was five accepting the reading and two against. The meeting was held in the Kneehill community hall and council granted an extension of 2.5 hours, when petitioners were still lined up out the door, after regular council hours had expired. Each presenter had three minutes to address council. In true rural fashion, when a neighbour ran out of time, another neighbour from the floor lent him his or her minutes. Time and time again, the presenters reminded council of their responsibility to the electorate. The goals of the ASP were compared to the Municipal Development Plan and contraventions were pointed out. As our councillors, you are ultimately responsible to us and you will be held accountable for your decision here today, said Joanne Kenworthy. Although it is a rural community, many of the population have wide ranging expertise and educational degrees in diverse fields. Some of the areas experts presented studies supporting ecological reasons, flaws in the consultants reports, financial ramifications, and points of cultural insensitivity negating the wisdom of the plan. Geoff Holroyd, holding a doctorate degree and previously employed as an environmental scientist with the Canadian government, showed a multitude of evidence that the race track and development would disturb many species and songbird populations. The study was done by qualified volunteers. He pointed out errors in one of the consultants reports. Holroyd showed how their report misidentified and underestimated the wildlife that would be affected. He gave an example of a wildlife study in Banff that he participated in. During one day of loud noise tests, it frightened the wildlife in the area away and they never came back, bringing into question the ASP consultants assumption that evening noise shutdown would bring them back. The area slated for condo sites is in the centre of the largest bird breeding area in North America. Ariel insectivores have decreased 60 per cent in the last 40 years and the population of 500 active nests here is phenomenal. He showed other flourishing species with 97 per cent declines and songbirds with 50 per cent declines that were breeding in the area. He expected road mortality, starvation and vehicle kills for the wildlife, from the development. He encouraged Council to think globally and act locally. This project cant mitigate these effects. This development is just in the wrong place, said Holroyd. There are far more implications than have been identified. An extensive Environmental Impact Study is essential. I find it amazing that we are even here today. There are species of grass and wildflower that were not listed in the report and some that are almost extinct. There were pictures and samples brought in to remind Kneehill Councillors of their beauty. The area has been nationally designated as an environmentally sensitive and significant area. Russell Muenchrath, agricultural manager for Wheatland County and member of the Rosebud River Watershed, showed how cars arriving from other areas and nonporous surfaces of the track and roadways would disturb soil and send species contaminates via storm water surging into the wetlands and the river, upsetting the delicate ecology. Paul Lauson showed specifications to noise ex-

Pass the Salt

In our culture we have few rites of passage but graduation from High School is one such rite. These young people no longer have their path set before them. They have choices to make, important choices that will set their course for the rest of their lives. They are no doubt well aware of all the narratives that come at them daily. Truly, in todays world we are bombarded with narratives. They come at us from all directions; newspapers, magazines, signs, billboards, radio, television, and the internet via face-book, twitter and Google. We are bombarded with narratives! Your teeth are yellow! Do you realize just how yellow your teeth are? Let me shine this light and it will highlight the condition! Your skin is wrinkly! Do you realize just how old those wrinkles make you look? Use this cream and you will be young again! Everyday we make choices about which narrative we will privilege ---your yellow teeth, your wrinkly skin, or perhaps a narrative of hope. The bible offers one such narrative, a narrative of hope. The bible is the story of how individuals and a people group have experienced God. It is a narrative of love. Jesus champions the outsider, provides for poor, has compassion for the bereaved, shows mercy, and offers grace. Travelling the road with Jesus love surrounding and indwelling offers hope for the journey. With all that life has to offer, its joys and its challenges, and its many adventures, going confident in the presence and love of God is a narrative of hope. This narrative equips one with a discerning lens to sort through all the narratives encountered along the way. Embodying this narrative of hope allows you to choose those narratives that are life giving. May all the young adults graduating from High School know they go with Gods blessing. May they have discerning eyes to choose wisely as they set their course. Rev Pamela Scott Strathmore United Church

Lois Koester is holding a bunch of wildflowers collected in the natural area where the Badlands Motorsports Resort is planning to build. She spoke to Kneehill councillors urging them to preserve the precious ecosystem on that site, by voting against the proposal for development.

perts at his workplace, who told him the figures for noise levels were in question. Linda Clark used to live near Calabognie Motorsports Track and said the sound will travel, as 70 decibel (dB) races can be heard there from two miles away. Internet sites show many tracks reach over 103 dB on race days. Alberta Health and Safety standards limit 85-87 dB for eight hours continuously and 103db exposure is recommended no longer than three minutes. Sue Millar owns a B&B in Rosebud and she thinks the project will ruin her business. Some wanted a financial probability analysis. Geologists gave information on the instability of the rock formations for hillside homes. Road washouts were prevalent in the area and the canyons formations intensify sound to Rosebud. Engineers testified setbacks were insufficient to protect adjacent vegetation and there were structural defects in the plans. Generational farmers gave testimony that they were insulted that the report listed the land not good for agricultural use. Colin Jensen showed photos of his farm adjacent to the area with bumper crop yield. Jensen also pointed out that the luxury condo owners were not going to like when farmers took to the field. The dust and chemicals on homes and luxury vehicles would be a source of complaint. He also felt that the development was not a benefit to the community and few would be able to afford to even use it. Other farmers complained of restricted access to their fields and dont want traffic complaints when moving equipment. Others wondered who would pay for infrastructure maintenance. There were heartfelt pleas by many people who felt it wasnt a fit for this area. They told of the hardships their forefathers endured to stake out a lifestyle, on land that was turned even before Alberta became a province. Young and old spoke of love for a rural lifestyle they had chosen, for just the way it was, expressing it was in jeopardy. Elaine Bellamys voice broke when she gave a poetic description of her prairie pioneer family linked to the land. She spoke of how she remortgaged her paid land to keep family property out of developers hands. Bellamy indicated they were stealing something valuable from the people. She said the situation set up an urban-rural struggle. Tales were told of pressure tactics used on residents to sell. I regret that I sold four acres to them. At the time I needed the money and they pressured me into the sale by saying I may as well take the money, because it was going to be built anyway, said Jensen. Opinions surfaced that it was culturally insensitive to think a luxury weekend place for the wealthy and their fast cars would be a fit for a region known for its agrarian population steeped in history and heritage, and a land known for its ecological beauty. There was outrage that the developers did not communicate with people in the area about their acceptance of the project. They stated tourism is a cooperative venture. When asked for his response to the petitions, Wilson replied they were more emotional than factual and he really didnt understand how it affected them. He wondered why they couldnt see the potential for the area the project would bring. He wanted to work with the community to protect the site. No reworking will mollify the opposition. I think youll agree that theirs is the only opinion that matters and the project is dead in the water, said Joel Stefanishion to Kneehill Council. At the end of the day, when the rubber meets the road, it isnt a good fit for a pristine environment, said Clark.

Raceway enthusiasts await approval

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Dr. Jay Zelazo of Badlands Recreational Development Corporation brought his team before Kneehill County Council on June 6, to present the Area Structure Plan (ASP) waiting approval. The Badlands Motorsports Resort is to be built on 425 acres adjacent to the Rosebud River. The project has been in development since 2005 and the ASP presentation was a step closer to turning sod. It is positioned in the Kneehill and Wheatland County areas. The project was expected to increase the counties viability through increased tax base and economic development. It was stated as a way to keep young people in the community and generate jobs. Alan Wilson, an internationally recognized race track designer, was retained to build the race courses. He spoke to Kneehill County council and residents on Zelazos dream of a luxury resort nestled along the Rosebud River. Wilson said experience has taught him that peoples perception of the idea was as important as the overall plan in having the project excepted. Perception is huge. Perception leads to emotion and leads to opposition, said Alan Wilson, who addressed the concerns he anticipated about the plan. We are not building a speedway. We are not building the Daytona 500. We are not building the Indianapolis 500. We are not building a drag strip. We are not building a motocross track. We are not building a dirt oval. We are not building an off road course, said Wilson. He cast the development as a recreational luxury resort for wealthy, upwardly mobile families to come and drive high end vehicles at higher speeds in a safe, contained space. While some residents might perceive the facility as grandstands full of beer swilling gearheads, the resort is expected to have the calibre and tone put into Spruce Meadows equine facility. It would be family oriented with amenities that would allow everyone access to the beautiful surroundings. The condos would have transient populations visiting in four days stretches. Traffic volumes were estimated at fewer than four hundred people during busy times, and the ASP indicates it can accommodate 1,100 spectators, at areas dispersed over the three tracks. Track use would range from race carts up to formula one racing vehicles, and although motorcycles are not mentioned in the plan, enthusiasts are calling for that to be allowed. Driver education and testing was an alternate use for the track sites. The resort will have four levels of Lifetime Memberships, starting at $10,000 and added yearly fees. Zelazo has built a website to answer frequently asked questions on the development (see www.badlandsmotorsportsresort.com/ faq.php). The site plan and analysis included environment, noise, water and soil studies, presented by consultants retained by the company. The environmental impact study is not required by federal or provincial guidelines, so the consultant complied with the MDP, but suggested a more detailed report is needed. All other studies suggested mitigation plans to deal with problems that were identified. Noise projections were also included but no definitive testing had yet been completed. For the complete ASP information see www.kneehillcounty.com/ or www.badlandsmotorsportsresort. com/badlands.pdf. Its a beautiful site. We want our customers to enjoy the beauty and revel in it, not just when they are driving, said Wilson. He wanted to fit the site to the environment and was sure that the plan can mediate all concerns surrounding the site. Seven other people spoke in favour of the development, stating their excitement to have a place to race their vehicles. They said opportunities for driving modified or high powered vehicles was vanishing, like the closure of Race City near Calgary, and having a specialized track made roads safer for everyone. Doug Hall used to teach at SAIT and felt the driver training facility would benefit young drivers and businesses in the area. Dan Beith, President of Stratotech Park in Fort Saskatchewan, related his experience as an owner and driver. Blair Robertson said he raced on many international tracks, including a similar setup in Seattle. He cited the interest from others who subscribe to racing magazines and internet racing sites, which are following the development (see www.badlandsmotorsports. ca). Terence Trent of Drumheller was excited there might be a place for him to race his custom vehicle. Cindy Amos said it would be a signature experience with a unique product.

Racetrack Proposal Intrudes On Rosebud Community

Save Our Land In Rosebud is a growing group asking you to become informed of our take on a proposed racetrack in the middle of a quiet agricultural community on the banks of the Rosebud River east of the hamlet of Rosebud.
Badlands Recreational Development Corporation has spent seven years preparing their Area Structure Plan (ASP) and area residents had five weeks to respond. A public hearing at Kneehill County on the ASP for this proposed development on June 11, 2013 was flooded with area residents echoing a resounding NO to this development. Environmentally Significant Area The area to be developed is in a Kneehill County Environmentally Significant Area (ESA) (Summit, 2010) and an Alberta designated ESA of national significance (Fiera, 2009). The area also incorporates 145 acres of productive farmland. Kneehill Countys Municipal Development Plan promises to protect both. Why is losing one small portion of the Rosebud River Valley so important? Every time development is permitted we lose another slice of our ESAs. Since 1990 the Rosebud ESA area has decreased by 50% from 4,530 ha to 2,029 ha. Kneehill County should take this opportunity to show leadership in a province that is already accused of sacrificing their ecosystem for development. Loss of Farmland Why is losing 145 acres of highly productive cultivated land so important? Alberta Agriculture Agronomist Ross McKenzie told the Alberta Soil Science Workshop in Lethbridge on Feb 20, 2013 that land suitable for cropping is becoming an increasingly scarce commodity in the province. He says Society must really get much more serious about protecting our land for future generations. Chipping away 145 acres makes a difference. Threatened Species Third party environmental assessments, limited by the developers refusal to allow access to the site, were conducted by Dr. Geoff Holroyd, emeritus research scientist for the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS), and by Linda Kershaw, MSc Botanist and Author. Holroyd stated that the Biophysical Impact Assessment (BIA) commissioned by the developer is incomplete. The area contains 20 bird species listed as sensitive by the Alberta government, four of which are nationally threatened and three of Special Concern. Holroyd concluded that the proposed development will result in destruction of this ecological diverse and important area, and destruction of critical foraging habitat for listed species. In summary, this development is in the wrong place and cannot be mitigated. Lost habitat = lost population. Kershaw found that there were major oversights in the developers BIA, observing 140 plant species, only 50 of which were recorded in the BIA. This included one rare species: prairie cordgrass, which is critically endangered. She states I suspect the wetland is much larger than the area outlined on the map. If the wetlands are in indeed larger, the racetrack will further fragment them as it winds through. In reference to the developers BIA, Kneehills own environmental consultant, Summit Environmental, states in their third party review of the BIA (ASP 2012), that The report does not mention any mitigation for the operation phase of the development. It is unlikely that a functioning motorsports park and associated facilities will foster the habitat requirements for those species that are mentioned as requiring protection during the construction phase. Vital Watershed The Rosebud River watershed is vital to the improvement of water quality and maintenance of water quantity on the landscape. Wheatland County and Cows and Fish conducted a Rosebud River Riparian health survey (March, 2012) which concluded the overall management objectives for these environmentally sensitive areas should include non-use, ecological reserve and recreation to a limited degree. Traffic Issues The ASP doesnt deal with rural agriculture and access needed on back roads by farmers. A traffic increase of up to 1,400 people per day in an area accustomed to local traffic only is significant. Racetrack patrons do not mix with moving agricultural machinery, livestock operations and crop operations. Secondary access routes to the site are entirely contained within Wheatland County, and the impact of these routes on the hamlet of Rosebud and for area farmers has not been addressed. Sound Issues The Rosebud community does not buy into the promise that the track will be quiet. With up to 100 high powered cars on the track at one time, Rosebud knows they will hear the whine of a racetrack in what is now a peaceful hamlet nestled in the quiet countryside. The developers environmental noise impact assessment by Acoustical Consultants Inc. used input provided by the developer for noise modeling parameters and included the caveat that ACI does not take responsibility for the accuracy of the information. Calculations and computer modeling performed by another acoustician put the noise level at the nearest residence not at 37.7 dBA, as presented by the developer, but at just over 70 dBA! This would be perceived by a listener as eight times louder than the developers study stated. Lack of Benefits The planned development is to be a self contained resort with its own accommodations, restaurants, gas station and recreational opportunities. There are few economic benefits to the surrounding area. Rosebuds own tourism expert and founder of the Canadian Badlands, Laverne Ericksen, stated that a tourism venture cannot survive if the community does not embrace it. The proposed development is an island in an ocean of opposition. United Community Opposition This intrusive development is an example of municipal planning missing the mark. Area residents are stunned at the extents they must go to defend the quiet enjoyment of their property. Surely many motorsports enthusiasts will also oppose a racetrack forced into a location that is environmentally fragile and into a community united in opposition.

If this development is approved, it will set a negative precedent that could affect all residents in the future. Please let the Kneehill and Wheatland councillors know that the voices of residents count. Wheatland County speaks out

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Wheatland County Reeve Glenn Koester spoke to the Kneehill County Council at the Area Structure Plan (ASP) public hearing, prior to approval of second reading for the Badlands Motorsport Resort development. He pointed out that the development was partially in Wheatland County. While the idea was presented for information to council who agreed to the idea in principle, the developer had not given them an ASP or met with them to discuss the issues within Wheatland County jurisdiction. We have to be protected as well, said Koester, about Wheatland County ratepayer and council interests. The Wheatland council had given him permission to present their concerns to the Kneehill Council and the developer. He said rezoning had to take place before the ASP can be approved. He spoke to road modifications in the plan that had not been approved by Wheatland Council, which also would require work agreements. He said there were also errors in the specifications, giving the example of 30 foot setbacks that should have been 125 feet. The plan also lists a comment that future housing expansion into Wheatland County is possible, but the developer didnt consult or have approval for that. He felt there should be better communication, so the whole process didnt resemble a dogs breakfast. There should have been an understanding between the two counties at the outset. There has to be dialogue and this should be done sooner than later, Koester said. He encouraged the Kneehill Council to retain a third party consultant to do an independent, unbiased environmental study, with special considerations to the unique wildlife, vegetation, water and storm water impacts on the wetlands and Rosebud River. The cumulative effects on the environment are huge, Koester said. He was concerned that backup servicing plans listed Rosebud as a possibility and no discussion or approval had been given. Nothing in the plan addressed ongoing road maintenance or use of county emergency services. He said he also would have liked to seen landowner concerns addressed. He said he shortened his list of concerns, due to the time constraints, but would like to discuss them at length in future discussions. Koester commended Kneehill Council for extending the meeting so all residents could be heard, and looked forward to hearing from Kneehill and the developer on the issues he had raised. Third reading will be decided on June 25.

Youth Club offers youth a chance to get out of town

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Summer holidays for teens can be great at first: youre out of the stuffy classroom; you can stay up late and spend more time with friends. After a while though, it can begin to get a little boring, especially if the opportunity to travel isnt there. The Youth Club of Strathmore is starting their newest program, Fusion Youth Excursions, the first week of July. The program will run based on interest. Fusion Youth Excursions provides day trips over the summer for youth ages 13 to 17. Not everyone has the luxury of having holidays off during the summer, and it gives them something to look forward to and a way to enjoy it (summer) without just hanging around Strathmore, said Colina Clark, program coordinator for the Youth Club of Strathmore. We hope to do one a week, again based on interest, and then if we have more interest we can go up to two a week. Ideas that have been discussed for the excursions include hiking in Banff or Kananaskis, using equine services in the area to go horseback riding, going to Horseshoe Canyon in Drumheller, Heritage Park in Calgary and so on. Nothing has been set in stone yet. We find that we run programs based on community needs and with being such a growing community we dont necessarily have all the services and activities available to youth so were simply offering another alternative, said Clark. The group will have a maximum of 15 kids in it, and Clark said she is aiming to host the program on Tuesdays, though that too is yet to be determined. There are member and non-member rates for Youth Club programs, but the fees for the Fusion Youth Excursions will likely be determined based on the location. To find out more, or to register for the program, contact the Youth Club of Strathmore at 403-934- 4918.

Shaking federal trees for shelterbelt protection

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Winds of protest are blowing across the Western provinces, over the shutdown of the Prairie Farm Shelterbelt program. Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, supported by the Conservative government, voted to discontinue the program as of Dec. 31, 2013. It does affect our rural ratepayers. It was pretty disappointing that the Minister cut back this program. We have sent a letter to the Minister asking him to make sure it remains viable in someones hands, said Bob Barss, president of the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties. The shelterbelt program has been in place for the last 100 years. It has helped farmers rebuild shelterbelts, windbreaks, conserve soil and improve yards by supplying free seedlings. Over seven million seedlings are sent out for planting each year. Norm Hall, president of the Association of Saskatchewan Agricultural Producers, said flooding in Manitoba has wiped out many tree stands. His discussions with farmers and agricultural organizations across the west indicate farmers do need these trees. Pine beetle infestations are destroying forest tracts and they are moving east. Dutch Elm disease is still destroying mature elm trees. Environment Canada recorded the highest average forest fires numbers in 2012, compared to numbers from the last 25 years. Climate change is creating drought conditions, affecting crops in areas not formerly affected. The Agriculture Adaptation Project done by the Saskatchewan Research Council indicates Canadian drought conditions in the future will exceed the worst droughts of the past. Many sources state natural resource and housing developments are fragmenting small animal habitat contributing to species extinctions. The Alberta Provincial Agriculture website states soil erosion is still occurring. Eroded soil damages downwind crops, buildings, causes accidents and causes costly cleanup and repair. Good shelterbelts provide windbreaks, decrease erosion, increase moisture content, increase crop yield, provide wildlife habitat, reduce snow removal costs, beautify the landscape and produce financial returns in forestry and tourism. Several interested parties have stepped forward to present alternatives to the government. A farm initiative, from the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, has put forward a bid to take over the program. Also, a coalition of the Wild Rose Agricultural Producers, Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan, the Keystone Agricultural Producers of Manitoba, the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, the Rural Municipality and Town of Indian Head, the British Columbia Grain Producers Association and the Peace River Regional District have asked the Minister to keep the program running, so it is transferable in 2014. Hall said there seems to conflict information coming from government compared to the action taking place at the Indian Head site. What he was telling us, and what he told Ralph Goodale on the floor of the house, was that the tree nursery was going to run as a full entity for the rest of the year. There was going to be a harvest, seedlings planted, irrigation water run, and applications sent out for next year. But that is not what we are hearing from the staff. We are hearing it is closing down, said Hall. There are twenty four staff at the Indian Head nursery that have been given letters of notice, regarding the program shutdown. No new seedlings have been planted, no new orders for 2014 are being taken and the last of this years stock is to be delivered this month. The federal government plans to repurpose the Indian Head site. They will sell or lease the land to an independent third party. There are other private companies, such as Smokey Lake Nursery, that currently produce and sell seedlings. Over 10 million, one-year-old container seedlings, are grown annually at Smokey Lake and over 200 acres of bareroot fields produce another 10 million two-year-old transplant seedlings. They would have to double their production to supply what is lost by the shutdown Indian Head facility. Scott Formaniuk of Tree Time Services Inc. said one mile of fence line planted with hybrid poplar species spaced at 2.5 meters apart, would take about 640 seedlings. At a cost of about $1.89/seedling, for a one-year-old tree, the total cost would be about $1,200. Large orders over 1,000 are offered a 10 per cent discount. Barss said the Wainwright area farmers planted 42,000 seedlings last year, which in the future will cost approximately $72,563. Hall said that the coalition is hoping they will have time to beat government red tape and bureaucratic channels to come up with a feasible business plan. They are interested in forming a cooperative, or not-for-profit organization, to operate the Indian Head Nursery and the shelterbelt program in the future. They have also contacted municipalities across western Canada to request they write a letter to the Minister to support the program and the coalitions objectives. They are hoping municipalities will contribute $100 each towards the development of business plan. Wheatland Council received the request May 16, and Council took the information for consideration. Anyone wishing to support the initiative can contact their local councillors; write the Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood Canada, 341 Baseline Road, Ottawa, Ontario K1A0C5, or Norm Hall APAS, 140 4th Avenue East, Regina Saskatchewan, S4N4Z4. Coordinators gear up for summer reading program

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The summer reading program at the Strathmore Municipal Library starts in just two weeks, and the coordinators have been busy planning how to make it the best yet. This years theme is Go and is one that Krystal Easu and Heather Potter are excited about. Both girls applied for the coordinator roles out of a love for both kids and reading. I have had previous experience babysitting and I just really love kids and doing crafts with them and reading with them, said Potter. Last summer I worked at Camp Evergreen so I love camp type things, I love kids, said Easu. The summer reading program itself consists of the kids coming into the library once a week. The summer reading program is for kids ages three to 17 years old. In the past the teen program hasnt had as high of a registration as we would like so were really going to try and improve that this year by kind of thinking of some really fun ideas such as art projects, different activities theyll love and kind of just a casual environment (where) they can feel comfortable to come hang out with us and read some fun books, said Potter. We really want to empathize that school and the library are two different places. They can come here and have adventures, whether that is in books or real travel and we just want to hang out with them. Im really excited about that age group, said Easu. Programs like the summer reading program have been proven to help both maintain and improve a childs reading skills. It really does come down to the use or it or lose it theory when it comes to reading over the summer. Easu said she and Potter are really hoping to challenge the kids. One way they plan to do so is by setting weekly goals and a summer long goal. One of the challenges is to read more than the week before, and those who are successful will get a prize. There will also be a point system used. There will be a map in the meeting room where there will be a marker of some sort, either a car or a train that goes along a road or rail route. This will give participants something visual to show them their progress throughout the summer. Its not just about reading. We really want to encourage them to grow in reading, but we also want to provide a place

where they can come each week and just have fun, said Easu. A lot of times summer becomes just about TV and lying on a couch which doesnt inspire much of anything let alone imagination, whereas books inspire us to get involved in our world, they let us escape it but they really let us kind of get involved. Easu and Potter are looking for volunteers to help them each week with the program. Volunteers need to be at least 13 years old and the commitment level will vary. The hours will be flexible, said Potter. It would be a great way to spend your summer, fun filled, helping with the kids and being active as well, said Potter. On the final Friday, August 23, there will be a wrap up held for all of the participants in the summer reading program. The program will run Monday to Thursday and the girls are currently trying to come up with ideas on different events to host each Friday. Stay tuned to the Strathmore Municipal Library Facebook page to find out what they come up with.

Ecological water reclamation

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Patrick Meyer is a consultant for an innovative new waste water reclamation process that revolutionizes the way a community addresses waste water disposal. He came to Wheatland County Council on June 10 and spoke to council, and the developers in the Muirfield area, whose residents are in desperate need of a resolution to their waste water woes. Putting one of these in town, rather than being an eyesore, it can be an enhancement for the community, said Meyers. The new concept combines the best of a traditional water treatment plant and ecological wetland treatment processes, to treat both grey and black water. Instead of using chemical treatments, and holding ponds, it utilizes a sustainable indoor wetland ecosystem. Organic compounds held in an underground tank are broken down by aeration, filtration and bio-augmentation into simpler parts that can be used by bacteria, algae, snails, frogs and aquatic organisms and plants. Gases are filtered off to be utilized for heat or other uses. The waste stream left over is run through sand beds and ultra-filtered, then treated with UV light, leaving water pure enough for use in irrigation or other non-potable uses. The remaining sludge is used in a worm composter (see:www.ecotek.ca). As for pharmaceutical and heavy metal contaminants, Meyer said no one has developed a system to remove these in conventional or other treatment processes, and more research is needed by the industry as a whole. He speculated that filtration systems could be developed, but was not sure how expensive they would be. These eco-system plants can be put in the heart of a community as no odors or harmful gases are present. There are in operational sites located at the University of British Columbia, Station Point Greens in Edmonton and it is used in the Town of Cynthia, located in Brazeau County. All those sites have greenhouse components. One site sells tropical plants it produces, another has actually set up walkways and a coffee shop inside the glassed off walls. Others use the plant to heat the office buildings. There are suggestions the water could be used by irrigation, or sold for industrial uses like fish farms or to oil contractors. These systems could also be used for educational purposes. It would also provide employment, as the ecosystem requires maintenance. The company intends to take the system to the next step, by testing if the water could be used to produce market gardens and food crops. The smaller eco-systems restore 80 meters of sewage in a two to three day turnaround, and is about one fifth of the cost of traditional plants. Savings can be reached by eliminating trucking of sewage (which is the stop gap method now used in Muirfield), or realized in eliminating expensive installations, such as lift stations used in conventional treatment plants. Lisa Marie Fox, executive director of Sustainable Resources Ltd., said there are several funding sources that could be requested for communities interested in the product. The plants currently only handle the needs of a small community. It was suggested that within a city, each community would have an ecosystem. Larger capacity systems for larger populations havent been developed. However, Meyer believes ecosystems will be the way sewage is treated in the future. The company said its major roadblock is getting approval for the plants because legislation and regulation is built around traditional methods. The province is supportive of the idea, as it fits into green policies and water management initiatives, but remodelling the existing governance structure is a slow process. He hoped that municipalities will take initiative and create opportunities that will move government to respond. It is a lot easier to build new regulations rather than going through the process of tearing a regulation down, said Councillor Ben Armstrong, who has seen similar delays for the SAEWA recycling project. One councillor suggested it could be adapted to irrigate seedlings, an opportunity opening up due to the federal governments cutback of the PFRA Shelterbelt program. The Muirfield developers were split on their opinion of the system. There were several hurdles in the area that had to be cleared before a system like this would work for them. They were looking for a solution that could be implemented immediately. Reeve Glenn Koester hoped the session offered an additional option for the developers to the problems plaguing the Muirfield area. He indicated Wheatland Council will try to help them bring parties together, where an acceptable solution can be reached.

Reds go 2-1 over hosting weekend tournament

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmores AA Midget baseball team can feel confident going into their next tiering tournament, having won two of three games at Kinsmen Park this past weekend. Their only loss came from the Okotoks Outlaws on June 15, who had a fiery pitcher. It was a bit of a heartbreaker, said Head Coach Ross Quennell. We were up 5-4 in the seventh, and ended up losing 8-6. We kind of threw the game away in the last inning there; made some mistakes, and gave the game up. Later that day, the Reds came back strong and beat Leduc by 10 runs, 22-12. The Leduc Giants were the only team to finish 0-3 in the tournament; all other teams were 2-1. On June 16, the Reds again almost lost their footing on an early lead: We got up early, something like 9-3, and then Stony Plain stormed back in the last couple innings, said Quennell. Strathmore held off the Royals, by a score of 11-8. Everyone contributed on the team this week, said Quennell. Solid team effort from top to bottom: the pitching, the defense, and the batting. Our hitting was probably exceptional this weekend, I thought we really hit the ball fantastically. The Strathmore Reds will have their last tiering rounds on June 26, and July 6.

Wheatland Kings take leave of absence

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter After finishing their fifth season, Directors of the Strathmore Wheatland Kings Junior Hockey team, Bob Grove and Doug Murphy, have decided to take a year off to explore their options. The Heritage Junior Hockey League granted the team a leave of absence for the upcoming season, after which they will return to the matter by next April, to see if anyone else is interested in taking over the team. If not, the team will disband. I think for both Bob and I, it ended up being too much time, too much money, and not enough fun the last couple years, said Murphy, who was also head coach and general manager of the team. Both Murphy and Grove helped create the team after seeing how sad their previous Midget Tier 1 players would get upon realizing that this was likely the final step in their hockey careers, as there was no step above at the time. Each put in their own money to keep the team going, which is much higher than other teams around the league, though most are financially supported in some way by their directors. We knew that going in, it was a new franchise. You have to start from scratch. A set of jerseys is ten grand, Murphy said. Jerseys werent the only financial burden. The team paid an adult user fee for practice space, about the same amount of what a beer league hockey team from Calgary would pay. This is double the amount of minor hockey or ringette

charges. At one point, in talking with the Town, one of the counselors was going to see if they could pass a resolution that would look at junior hockey differently, more particularly in the rates, he said. But nothing came of it, and the directors felt a real lack of progress regarding the situation. The reason we started the team was to give Strathmore players a place to play. Neither Bob or I had kids that were involved in it, so it wasnt about us it was about the kids, Murphy said. Unfortunately, if it does end up folding, itll be back to the same situation as it was before where guys are traveling up to Three Hills or Okotoks. Grove has two grandsons now, and wishes to spend more free time traveling with his wife. Murphy put in roughly 30 to 60 hours per week into the team, and says it became more of a drain than a pleasure. Hes considering moving closer to family, due to his wifes health. Should the team find a new ownership, the Wheatland Kings are able to keep the rights to five players. All other players will be released. I think the one thing that both Bob and I would like is for somebody to come forward, and take the team over. Strathmores a great hockey town, weve had the most and the best fans in the league for the last five seasons, Murphy said. Weve got an unbelievable group of volunteers, most of whom have been with us right from the very start. It would be sad to see it go. Anyone interested taking over the Wheatland Kings can contact Doug Murphy at doug@mcps.ca.

Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo heading into 20th year

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Annual Big Rock Canadian Rockies International Rodeo and Music Festival is celebrating its two-decade mark this year, on June 28-30 at the Strathmore rodeo grounds, welcoming gay-friendly riders and families. A large contingent of riders are expected to travel from the United States, as certain rodeos this year were cancelled south of the border. The Canadian Rockies International Rodeo holds traditional roping, speed, and rough stock events, but also features goat dressing, steer deco, and wild drag. The latter team events are more lighthearted and geared towards families, but can still be dangerous to some degree, said Communications Director of the Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo Association, Drew Davidson. Weve had brothers, or fathers and daughters compete. Its great to be able to have an event where the family can be involved, he said. The ARGRA is attempting to lower the age of competition (which is currently at 18) in order to provide more support to younger teens that may want to come out as gay individuals. This way, they can compete in rodeo events within an accepting environment. Anyone is open to enter men, women, and of any sexual orientations. The one thing thats different about ours, is that both males and females can compete in the events, whereas in traditional rodeo, bull riding and steer riding tend to be male, Davidson said. So its a nice difference. All the power to whoever wants to do that. The ARGRA is holding a Rodeo School on the morning of June 28, for anyone interested in chute dogging, bull riding, steer riding, or roping. No experience is necessary, and professional contestants in the weekends rodeo walk you through the lessons. Its $25 per event, and most students even participate the next day in the competition. Some people even buckle in their first go, which is amazing, Davidson said. Over 100 volunteers are needed to put on the event; the music festival begins at 4 p.m. on June 28 with 19 musical acts, and Tornado Night Club, located on the grounds, will have eight DJs over the weekend as well. Different packages and tickets are available; go to www.argra.org for more details.

Wheatland Wildfire burns strong

Coach Kyle Larson has a passion for sports and has passed it on with the development of the fourth season of the Wheatland Wildfire boys and girls basketball teams. This past weekend both U17 teams played in a weekend long Shooting Stars Tournament involving the communities of Chestermere, Langdon, Strathmore, Airdrie, and Calgary. The U17 girls were 0 for 3 and the U17 boys were 1 for 3. Both teams played against teams with different skills and ability levels and was a great way to end the basketball season. Western Canada farmers to host Grey Cup parties

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Canadian Football League (CFL), in partnership with Dow AgroSciences, is giving farmers from Manitoba to British Columbia a chance to share their successful crop production stories online. The two best submissions will be rewarded with CFL Grey Cup Trophy parties on their yards. The two lucky farmers will also attend the 101st Grey Cup Championship in Regina on November 23. Twenty-five other farmers will also get the chance to attend the Grey Cup Final, and 50 others will be given $100 worth of CFL merchandise. The two companies have been in partnership for three years, but this is the first joint venture project of its kind. We wanted to show appreciation to our customers and because Dow AgroSciences is a proud partner of the CFL, we can offer this unique opportunity, said Loralee Orr, communications manager of Dow AgroSciences. Plus its a whole lot of fun, and with the 101st Grey Cup Championship Game being in Regina, we expect there to be excitement across the Prairies, and we want to bring some of that energy to reward customers on their farm. Orr says that CFL players, who are high performance but not necessarily as well recognized as NFL competitors, are everyday heroes - just like farmers. They provide essential food for the Canadian population, for the world population, and for the Canadian economy. But we dont really call out their praises very often, so this is something we thought was aligned well with the CFL, Orr said. Submit your application online at www.2013mvp.ca by Oct. 1 if youre a Dow AgroSciences herbicide or Nexera canola customer, and talk about your experience with the products. Video and photo additions are optional, but certainly help. Winners will receive notice by mid-October, and have the Grey Cup on their land within a few weeks following.

Logan Crooks has been playing darts since he was 12-years-old. From October 7-14, he will be representing Canada with two others in the 18 and under category at the Winmau World Darts Masters in England. He practices typically for 3-4 hours, either at his familys home dart studio, or at the Strathmore Legion.

Crooks to compete at World Darts Masters

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmorian Logan Crooks is not your average 16-year-old. He plays AAA baseball for the Strathmore Reds, and also will be representing Canadas 18 and under team at the Winmau World Darts Masters in England come October. Its the most elite shoot in the world for kidsits the one that everyone wants to get, father Jim Crooks said. It is a big achievement in his life. Logan Crooks qualified as one of three for Canadas team at Nationals back in May, and had the opportunity to travel to Newfoundland, where the tournament was held. Prior to that, he won Provincials back in February for the 16 and under category. With the occasional weekend off in baseball, thats when Crooks has time to compete with darts. How did he get so good, for only having played four years? Mostly practice. three or four hours a night, he practices, said Jim Crooks. He doesnt have to, but he wants to do it. My mom and dad played here (in Strathmore), and in Legions around. So I just went around and played with them, Logan said. The Crooks have a dart studio at home with three boards to keep up Logans skill. Logan feels the hand-eye coordination from darts assists him in his baseball game; he prefers darts as its much easier to represent your province, and mingle with other competitors. Darts is more social than baseball. When you go to Nationals theres more people to be with; baseball you just kind of play a team, and thats it, he said. With sponsors all the way from Japan with L-Style, to Puma Darts from New Zealand, to Western Feed Lots, to the Strathmore Ladies Auxiliary and Royal Canadian Legion, Logan has a lot of pressure on his shoulders to perform when it counts. Once you have a final, a stage final, everyone watches it. Thats a little nerve-racking, he said. Just stay calm, nerves get the better of a lot of people. When youre playing, you lose complete focus around. Its just you and the board. If you start listening behind you, youre done, said Jim. Its the type of game where theres a lot of hand-eye coordination. Its not a real physical game, but major concentration. The teens eventual goal is to turn pro, like his mentor, Canadian Ken MacNeil. Crooks can return to Winmau one more year after the 2013 tournament.

Strathmore just misses podium at Track and Field

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter With three representatives (and a relay team) from SHS, and one athlete from Holy Cross Collegiate, the students did Strathmore proud during Track and Field Provincials at Foothills Park in Calgary on June 7-8. The Intermediate Girls Relay team from Strathmore High, made up of Cassandra Fisk, Carter Jones, Jade Ballance, and Jessica Murphy, finished in seventh place, with the latter also finishing 11th in the province in high jump. Karly Larson finished 14th for the same event in her division, junior girls. Spartan Kyle Foster was one spot off from bronze, finishing fourth in Alberta, in the Junior Boys 400 m Dash. Holy Cross lone competitor, Christopher OLeary also finished fourth, but in Junior Boys Discus. As for junior high, Holy Cross hosted Wheatland County finals on June 4, and Zones in Calgary on June 5. Competing two meets in two days is very challenging, said John Reinhart of Holy Cross Collegiate. The students did a very good job under difficult circumstances. The meets were exceptionally challenging for those taking on more than one event: Darcie Weir finished second in long jump, third in relay, sixth in 100 m dash, and fifth in 200 m. Similarly, Madison Tiffin finished third in long jump, third in relay, and fifth in 100 m. In more endurance-style events, Martina Vergouwen dominated, taking seventh in 3000 m and sixth in 800 m. She finished third in relay as well. On the boys side, standout Chris Rebeyka earned fourth place in hurdles and 400 m, and seventh in discus.

With the current increase in the Real Estate Market in Strathmore and Calgary, I am announcing myself as stepping down from the Management Position at the Strathmore Station. It has been a huge learning experience and a wonderful two years. I thank Peter and Latki for the opportunity to work for them. The staff and customers. I will surely miss you. My family moved to Strathmore in 1967, and I have been here my entire life. I became a Real Estate Associate in 2006. This past April I have ranked No. 8 in my office of 275 agents. This year alone I have helped 11 buyers find their new home, 6 sellers get the price they wanted for their homes. I work with We lists, acreages, Strathmore, Calgary and surrounding areas.
