Bentleys Fish and Chips are returning to Suva at the much-awaited Damodar City Complex in Raiwai Suva. From fish and chips, pizza, slushy drinks and donuts, this will be the core business of business partners Rodney Fong and Leanne Bentley. They are investing approximately $200,000 in what they hope will be the ideal business venture. Meanwhile both Mr Fong and Ms Bentleys original core business is in construction operating the Construction (Fiji) Limited and also partners in Pizza Mia at MHCC in Suva. The duo, who have always wished to go big in food business are now taking that leap of faith forward. Three outlets: Pizza Mia, Orbies Donuts, Slushy and Bentleys Fish and Chips will be opened at Damodar City soon with Pizza Mia being the main outlet. Bentleys Fish and Chips The duo are bringing the once famous Bentleys Fish and Chips back at the complex which has received blessing from Ms Bentleys family and approval from Dayanand Damodar. Bentleys was a premier fish and chips outlet in Fiji in the 1980s at the current Harbour Centre, Mr Fong said. A lot of people actually miss it including Mr Damodar, who was a regular customer. He actually wanted it revived and with this and the Leannes familys blessing to revive the eatery, Mr Fong said. Investor confidence The investment, they say, has only been possible given the local business owners confidence in Government.

Obviously were doing it, so there has to be a certain level of confidence in order for anybody to want to spend $200,000 to $300,000 on food outlets, Mr Fong said. It comes down to confidence with Government. Most importantly, it has to do with confidence in our economy. We know one thing that the Fiji economy will grow. We can see things in our Government that is very confident and very economically-driven and were going to ride on that and take these risks. Slush and donuts In terms of developing the popularity of assorted-flavoured slushy drinks, the duo are bringing in new equipment from New Zealand also for mobility. The slushy machines are Italian so most of the equipment are Italian because of their reliability, theyre more expensive but more reliable, Mr Fong said. Ms Fong said: We believe that having different tastes which are healthy and affordable will give our customers more value for money. Slushy drinks are Italian-originated and sometimes known as a slushie or slushy, is a flavoredfrozen drink and famous across the world especially amongst the younger generation. Pizza Mia The acquisition of Pizza Mia from recent owners was another step forward for the duo and taking it the complex will play a pivotal role in the business. Mr Fong said: Our Pizza makers and Barista here just as good as anywhere else. They are highly trained and they are motivated and enthusiastic.

Ten Fijian families are now debt free homeowners after their home loan accounts were written off by Housing Authority. Housing Authority chief executive Alipate Naiorosui said the families have qualified for a full write off their home loan account under the social housing policy. This housing program is targeted at homeowners who have paid over one and half times the principal loan amount and are facing genuine financial difficulty. According to Naiorosui, the 10 families received official letters from Housing Authority indicating that their home loan account had been completely written off under the social housing policy that is being funded by

a government grant. The social housing policy is being funded under a $2.5 million government grant to directly assist existing homeowners who are facing genuine financial difficulty and are no longer able to make their home loan repayments due to retirement or unemployment under medical grounds. As part of the social housing policy once the home loan account has been written off, the homeowner will not be eligible for further loans within 10 years. Added to this upon transfer of shares or sale of the property the assistance amount will need to be paid back in full. The policy was launched in 2011 and to date 263 families have had their home loan accounts written off nationwide.

Fiji's government is calling for expressions of interest (EOIs) from organisations and individuals to translate Fijis Constitution which is currently being finalized into contemporary Hindi. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Anti-Corruption Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said in order to ensure that all Fijians are able to fully understand the new Constitution, it will be published in all three major languages. He said while the Ministry of iTaukei affairs will provide the translation into the iTaukei language, government

is inviting EOIs to select the party most qualified and able to provide a contemporary Hindi translation The Attorney-General said that carrying out the translations into iTaukei and Hindi was one of the final steps before Fijis Constitution would be ready. The government has completed most of its revisions to the Draft Constitution, after careful consideration of the numerous submissions made by the Fijian people. One of the final steps remaining is to translate the constitution into Fijis two other major languages, he said.

Fijian Art On Display In Uk Exhibition

AN exhibition of Fijian art has been launched at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (MAA) of Cambridge University in England. The MAA says this is the "first ever exhibition dedicated to Fijian art outside of Fiji" and that it holds "the most historically significant collection of Fijian objects in the world outside of Fiji". The exhibition is named 'Chiefs and Governors: Art and Power in Fiji', and according to the Cambridge University website, is focused on "the relationship between Fijian chiefs and British Governors in the late 19th century". The MAA website says the collection was part of the founding collections when the MAA opened in 1884. Its website says Baron Anatole von Hgel, the MAA's first curator, and Sir Arthur Gordon, Fiji's first Governor, accumulated an impressive collection of Fijian objects presented to them by Fijian and Tongan chiefs. They gave the collection to the University of Cambridge in 1883. Apart from traditional artifacts such as weapons, masi and wooden figures, letters and documents give a glimpse into the lives of British officials and Fijian paramount chiefs. On the Cambridge University website, Dr Anita Herle, co-curator of the exhibition, says: "These exquisite objects have many stories to tell, and throughout the exhibition we are trying to explore the power of Fijian art in the past and present." British newspaper The Independent rated the exhibition four stars out of five. "It is a fascinating look at a particular moment in history, and the burgeoning story of art history in the South Pacific," the newspaper reported. The exhibition is part of a threeyear effort called 'The Fijian Art Research Project', a joint venture between Cambridge University and the University of East Anglia which started in 2011. The exhibition will be on display until April next year.

FIJI'S hotel industry imports majority of its meat requirements from overseas to meet the culinary tastes of the 750,000 tourists who visit the country annually. Speaking at a recent workshop organised by the Fiji Crop and Livestock Council in Savusavu, Sarami Project owner from Santo in Vanuatu, Peter Colmar, said their project was aimed at encouraging people revive the beef industry and tap into the tourism market. Mr Colmar said the beef industry was once vibrant in Fiji but this had slowed as people lost interest. "With the Sarami project, I strive to stimulate people into thinking about it

again," he said. "At present, the majority of our meats are imported and most hotels import meats of special cuts from overseas because of their guests' preferences. "Now this workshop is aimed at encouraging farmers to produce these meats locally and make money from an industry which has a lot of potential." Mr Colmar said resources were available for establishing a beefproducing company because land, market, rainfall and labour were easily available around the country. "In Vanuatu, we have half the number of cattle here in Fiji but we kill the same numbers through abattoirs therefore, we double the production of Fiji," he said.

Air Pacific is the only airline in the region which currently stands in the worlds top 100 airlines in the 2013 Skytrax World Airline Awards. The awards were announced during the Paris Air show this week in France. Our national airline, which will undergo rebranding next week to Fiji Airways, also moved up one ranking in the world ranking. The awards are the most prestigious accolades for the world airline industry and are a global benchmark of airline excellence. Meanwhile, as the show continues in France, more awards are expected to be announced, including the regional awards. Air Pacific last year ranked fifth Best Airline in the Australia Pacific Region. World top airlines Looking at the much bigger airlines, Emirates moved up from 8th position last year to become the worlds best airline according to Skytrax. Qantas also seemed to make a comeback in the top 10 ranking 10th after falling to 15th position last year. Qantas also took out the accolade for the best Australia Pacific carrier. Accompanying them are Fijis Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Ravindran Robin Nair (back left) and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority chief executive, Jitoko Tikolevu (back right) with officials from Qatar Public Revenue and Tax Department Fiji has signed a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) with the Government of Qatar. The agreement means the avoidance of double taxation, where a taxpayer pays taxes in both Fiji and in Qatar. The agreement was signed by the Permanent Secretary for Finance, Filimone Waqabaca and the Qatar Director of Public Revenue and Tax Department, Moftah Jassim Al-Moftah. Fijis Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Ravindran Robin Nair, and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority chief executive, Jitoko Tikolevu, were also part of the Fiji delegation. Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world and the agreement will provide an opportunity for both countries to trade. Mr Tikolevu said the agreement clearly defines the rule for taxing in both countries. Investors will be able to know the exact tax implication of their investment in either country, he said. Mr Tikolevu said this will be so as the agreement will clearly spell out the withholding tax rates, treatment for interest, dividend or royalty. He highlighted investors often look at the tax regime of a country before deciding to invest. Therefore, having a DTA is an incentive on its own by attracting foreign investments. It provides certainty to the new investor, he said. The DTA has a lot to offer and we can gain a lot from it in terms of new economic opportunities. Fijians in Qatar and more deals A number of Fijians are already working in Qatar as security officers, pilots, air crew and engineers. They will no longer pay taxes in both Fiji and Qatar. This is the tenth Double Taxation Agreement signed by the Government of Fiji. It already has agreements with Australia, New Zealand, Japan, United Kingdom, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and the United Arab Emirates. Fiji is expected to sign a Double Taxation Agreement with India later this year.

Scholarship Awareness Reaches Students Of Naitasiri

Fijis Top Resorts Go On Sale

In an effort to reach out to the public at large on the scholarships available and offered at by the Public Service Commission (PSC), a team was at Lomaivuna High School for the careers expo day. PSC permanent secretary Parmesh Chand said that close to 400 students in the province of Naitasiri visited the PSC booth to learn more about the different scholarships offered. PSC is making every effort to ensure that primary and secondary school students in particular those in the rural areas, get the opportunity to know about scholarships offered at PSC, he said. There are altogether six scholarships being offered. These include the PSC Local, PSC Overseas, Student Loan Scheme, Tertiary Education Loan Scheme, PSC Multi Ethnic Affairs Scheme and the Scholarship Scheme for Special Children (SSSC). Lomaivuna High School Principal, Naisa Cama Toko said that organizing the careers expo day was a historical occasion for the school.

This is the first time that an event like this has been organized here. We had been preparing from the beginning of this year in conjunction with the Careers team at the Ministry of Education, he said. I feel that is so important that children at the tender age of primary school get to choose their career path early in life so that they are focused and can work towards it. The PSC local scholarships caters for degree and diploma programmes of study like the Multi Ethnic Affairs and student loan scheme, however the Tertiary Education loan scheme is offered only for those studying for a degree. The scholarship scheme for special children is offered only to students who study for a Certificate or a Trade Certificate and to those who are physically challenged and those who are socially disadvantaged. The PSC Government Overseas Scholarship this is only given to students who study for Undergraduate Degree, Postgraduate and Masters.

Two of Fijis iconic resorts Sonaisali Island Resort and Tadrai Island Resort are now on sale through an international expression of interest campaign which closes on August 1. TravelMole news reports the two resorts are being sold by CBRE Hotels, Colliers International Hotels, and The Professionals West Realty (Fiji). Sonaisali resort has been owned by the McGrath family for the past 20 years and regional director of CBRE Hotels Rob Cross said the owners have decided that this would be the right time to sell the property and pass it on to a new owner who can take advantage of

the unprecedented trading conditions at play in Fiji. Sonaisali is located on Naisali Island, 300 metres off Viti Levu and 20 minutes from Nadi International Airport, it has 123 Bures and hotel rooms as well as a large poolside restaurant, conferencing and retail facilities. Five-star Tadrai Island Resort is located on Mana Island in the Mamanuca Island Group, and the all-inclusive, adults-only retreat offers five luxury beachfront villas, a restaurant, infinity pool and health spa. Each 100sqm villa has its own private plunge pool and spacious en suite facilities.

Fijians Dying At A Young Age

Fijians are dying at a young age from rheumatic heart diseases (RHD). This is the finding from Dr Charlie Corke of the Geelong Hospital in Australia. Dr Corke was part of the Operation Open Heart team that was in the country a month ago conducting open heart surgeries for patients. He said the team operated on patients between the ages of 15 and 50 years. "The age group we operate on here is a lot younger than we operate on in Australia. The patients here who are sick are much younger, there is so much infection and there is no antibiotic, that's the problem," Dr Corke said. In response, CWM Hospital head of pediatrics and consultant Dr Joseph Kado said it was a fact that RHD killed people in their youth, especially if they were undiagnosed or if diagnosed but chose not to comply with the treatment. "RHD or acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is often diseases that are not common in developed countries, except among indigenous populations like the Aborigines in Australia and Maoris in New Zealand," Dr Kado said. "They are diseases that are common in developing countries where poverty, poor sanitation, hygiene and overcrowding are the main risk factors. In Fiji, this is a big problem with majority of ARF cases being in the five to 55 years age group but the burden of the complication of RHD being in the 13-35 years age group." However, Dr Kado refuted claims made by Dr Corke that there was not enough antibiotics in the country to treat infections. "The antibiotics needed to treat Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is simply penicillin, the common presentation is with a sore throat and needs either a single injection of benzathine penicillin or 10 days of oral penicillin, which if untreated can cause acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart diseases."

Solar Energy Improves Living Standards

People living in Lalakoro, Dagau and Navudi settlements in Seaqaqa will now have access to proper electricity. This follows the installation of government-funded solar energy projects under the Sustainable Energy Financing Project to increase the use of renewable energy to reduce the import of fuel. An elated Ram Subhag said the installation of this solar energy project would greatly benefit their childrens education. For the past 53 years we have relied on lanterns and generators to provide light, which is quite costly, especially with the increase in prices of kerosene and diesel nowadays, Mr Subhag said. We are grateful to Government for providing the 85 households, who live in this area with solar energy. It will be helpful to our children and future generation. Sharing similar sentiments 43-year-old Siliva Silinatoba said these solar panels would encourage residents living in the settlement to venture into macrobusiness. Government has set aside a total of $8.5million under the 2013 budgetary allocation for rural electrification. Minister for Works, Transport and Public Utilities Colonel Timoci Natuva while commissioning the solar energy project said Government continued to forge ahead positive initiatives and implemented close to 4000 solar home systems to assist people in the maritime and rural areas. The community has contributed close to $3000 for this project with Government investing close to $130,000 . This is a clear indication of the commitment of this Government to see developments in rural and maritime regions, Colonel Natuva said. The benefits of such electrification projects will be immense, ranging from those at the macro-level to those directly felt by each member of the three settlements. Colonel Natuva acknowledged local company Powerlite Generators Company Limited for installing the solar systems.

Canadian Jet Diverted To Nadi

An Air Canada Boeing 777 carrying 265 passengers and 18 crew diverted to Nadi Monday night for an emergency landing. It came after crew noticed a burning smell and what one unconfirmed report said was believed to be smoke. The big jet was enroute from Sydney to Vancouver. Airports Fiji Limited and Air Terminal Services swung into action to provide full support. Airports Fiji general manager Lawrence Liew said the emergency landing followed a burning smell emitting from a cabin toilet area. This later spread to another toilet which led to the pilots decision to divert, he said. The emergency occurrence committee was not activated as the aircraft landed safely and was escorted to gate one by fire rescue trucks, Mr Liew said. He said that he had spoken to the crew

and the passengers and crew were safe and comfortable. Ground engineers were checking the plane, he said. When the reporter visited the airport, the ground engineers were still working on the aircraft. Mr Liew said he was not in a position to say by when it would be ready to continue its flight to Vancouver. Passengers disembarked and went to the transit lounge and a business class lounge. Mr Liew said: By 2100 hours all passengers had disembarked from the plane including three wheelchair cases who were seated at the cafe and being cared for by ATS. Refreshments were being provided while hotel arrangements were being addressed as it appeared that the source of the burning smell had not been identified. Westin, Hilton and Tanoa hotels were being advised to standby.

A Post Disaster Needs Assessment for Tropical Cyclone Evan has been launched to assist the Disaster Management Office and other agencies better coordinate in mitigating and minimising the risk from future disasters. While launching the assessment for TC Evan, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Inia Seruiratu said it was a credible, rigorous and globally recognised standard methodology. Mr Seruiratu said the assessment enabled Fiji to take stock of physical damage to property, infrastructure and productive assets as the recovery from TC Evan continued. This is a testament to our commitment to ensure the fundamentals of post disaster assessment are embedded for recovery planning and fed into the governments overarching national development agenda, Mr Seruiratu said. The advent of TC Evan has shown the resilience of our people in the face of adversity and great determination to get back on their feet, take stock and rebuild. We are intent on building on these achievements and introducing more efficiency and effectiveness in the way we deal with national emergencies. This is the first time in Fijis history that such an extensive exercise after a natural disaster had been undertaken. Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics permanent secretary Pita Wise said the previous approach used was based on estimates of damage for emergency response and

short term rehabilitation without any long term strategic approach. The PDNA not only gives us the opportunity to better position our collective capacity to respond when disasters occur but also take a more long term strategic approach on how best to mitigate, adapt and minimise the risk from future disasters, which have become a regular than ever before, Mr Wise said. The assessment provides vital data beyond the physical damage to property, infrastructure and productive assets. It also accounts for losses resulting from the disruption of economic flows brought by the disaster, Mr Wise said. The significant loss dimension was not covered in the assessment carried out previously. The Post Disaster Needs Assessment provides the necessary information for Government, development partners and all stakeholders to respond effectively to short, medium and long term needs and priorities. The current PDNA simply provides the necessary strategy to address needs of those affected by TC Evan in a more targeted approach to ensure that limited resources available are used effectively. Mr Wise said the PDNA also allowed for better communication among stakeholders. This is a long term strategic approach to mainstreaming disaster risk reduction and empower our most vulnerable communities to take the necessary steps and develop better adaptation methods to minimise future impacts of natural disasters, he said.

Reverend Akuila Yabaki (left), of the Citizens Constitutional Forum with his lawyer Jon Apted outside the High Court in Suva The High Court heard submissions that the head of the Citizens Constitutional Forum Limited, Reverend Akuila Yabaki, be sentenced to no less than six months in prison. During mitigation and sentencing submissions before judge Justice William Calanchini, the lawyer representing the Attorney-Generals office, Ropate Green also said the forum should pay no less than $100,000 within a specified time period. He submitted that the owners and directors should go into a good behaviour bond of $100,000 on behalf of the forum. The CCF, and editor of its newsletter Tutaka, Reverend Yabaki, were found guilty on May 4, 2013 of the publication of an article in its April, 2012 issue which contained words amounting to contempt of court. They denied the contempt throughout proceedings. While highlighting important points of the appellants response to the respondents mitigation, Mr Green said the CCFs profile and its publications attract local and international attention. He said the respondents should have been more vigilant and the assertion that a legally qualified person had authored the published article was irrelevant. Mr Green submitted that the actions of the forum had undermined public confidence in the judiciary and the rule of law. Referring to paragraph 20 of our response, a plea of not guilty throughout and an apology after being found guilty appears to be a mere formality than sincere regret, Mr Green submitted. He submitted that a proper sentence should be imposed to send out the message that the powers of the court were indispensable and undermining its authority would not be condoned. Its clear that they did not appreciate potential consequences of publishing the article, he said. Their regret following conviction is highly questionable. Australian lawyer Neil Williams, who appeared for the CCF, submitted that Reverend Yabaki had given his life to the service of others and had no previous convictions. Mr Williams relayed an apology in court on behalf of the respondents and revealed their intentions to publish a front page apology on the next issue of their Tutaka newsletter. Justice Calanchini said it would be suitable if he had a read of the drafted apology before it is published. Mr Williams said Reverend Yabaki had four children aged between 32 to 45, and he has been employed as a school teacher, minister, officer of the Methodist Church and currently the chief executive officer of the Constitutional Forum. The court heard that there was no intention to scandalise the court as the respondent did not think the article was contemptuous. He (Reverend Yabaki) accepts responsibility for the article, Mr Williams submitted. Mr Williams further submitted that the conviction is in itself a deterrent to the forum. Justice Calanchini will deliver his sentence on the matter on notice.

In line with the Look North Policy and Pillar 11 of the Peoples Charter for Change, Peace and Progress, Fiji is now receiving accreditation from more countries. The Georgian non-resident ambassador, Vladimir Konstantinidi presented his credentials to the President, His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau at Government House. Mr Konstantinidi, who is also accredited to Australia, is the first Georgian Ambassador to Fiji stemming from Fiji and Georgia establishing diplomatic ties in 2010 upon a request from the latter. He has served in many spheres of Georgias civil service, especially pertaining to the area of law as he did his studies in the Faculty of Law, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University.

Commuters in the Western Division can now look forward to a new mode of public transportation. The commuter railroad project to cost $20million will be developed through a proposed investment by the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) to use public service trains on its tramlines. Minister for Public Utilities (Water and Energy) and Transport Timoci Lesi Natuva said Government is fully supportive of the initiative as it would mean lesser traffic jams on our roads at peak hours. There will also be easier and faster transportation of cargo and travel because trains will provide another option for the travelling public. We could see a public private partnership working to benefit not only our road users but all Fijians, he said. Government is very much part of this project which will see the introduction of trains, Minister Natuva said. Minister Natuva said Fijians not accessible to roads but live in the cane belt area will benefit. This means people between Ra and Sigatoka can travel by road or train between centres. FSC executive chairman Abdul Khan said they were reviewing the railways and would invest millions over the next few years in the project. We only use our railway during the crushing season and the other 6 months it (railway lines) is idle so we have come up with an idea to invest a little more so that we are able to get some returns from our investment, Mr Khan

said. At the same time provide an alternative mode of transportation for locals as well as tourists. Talks with stakeholders have reached the stage where we will implement our strategy because most times our railway lines are idle and cane transportation via railway is somewhat decreased. The first railway lines were built in 1876 and since then have been used sorely for transportation of cane to the mills. According to Mr Khan, the train system will begin by 2016. Over time, the changing dynamics of the sugar industry and the increase in vehicles on Fijis roads has pushed the introduction travel of trains. We are looking at options on whether the trains will be for produce or people or both so the figure will be different for this capital investment. We expect the returns to be also massive. Fiji Sugarcane Growers Council acting chief executive officer Sundresh Chetty said the introduction of trains would certainly boost the transportation sector in the country. About 70-80 per cent of cane used to be transported via the trams in the 80s but right now it has moved on to trucks which gives another reason to use the railways for other purposes, Mr Chetty said. The idea has already been given the green light from Government. We are all for it and it would really boost our transportation sector earnings, Permanent Secretary for Sugar, Manasa Vaniqi said.

Villagers and communities in rural areas could use it as an alternative to busses and mini vans, Special Administrators in the western division have thrown their support for the initiative Lautoka Special Administrator Praveen

Bala says the initiative has the backing of his municipality and he looked forward to the introduction of trains in Fiji. It is a very good idea and Lautoka is fully backing the introduction of trains, Mr Bala said.

Police Identify Origin Of Fake Certificates

POLICE have confirmed that the origin of the fake certificates that were confiscated by officials of the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority has been established. FRCA confiscated 41 fake certificates alleged to have been issued by a local based university. Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said investigations were continuing and the focus was now on working with the relevant university in clarifying certain information.

By Mumtaz Khan As many of you may be aware, the sponsorship of parents and grandparents was suspended in November 2011. During this time, to placate the masses, the Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism, introduced the SuperVisa. Prior to this, a multiple entry visa was only granted for five years with a maximum length of stay of 6 months. With the Super Visa, it allowed parents or grandparents to stay with their families in Canada on a temporary basis for up to two years. Jason Kenney, the Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism has been touting that there is an overall approval rate of 77%, for this sort of application. But to bring parents on this this Super Visa can be a very costly proposition. The sponsor has to show that he or she has the requisite medical insurance in place for the parents or grandparents at the time of application. These insurance policies are not cheap and can cost thousands of dollars. They also have to show that they also meet the minimum financial requirements, which can be more than $53,000, for a family of five. The good news for those who want to bring their parents or grandparents permanently to Canada, the parents and grand-parents sponsorship program is re-opening on January 2, 2014. However, there are a number of changes, to the program, and I would say to the detriment of the Canadian Sponsors. Here are the changes: 1. There will be a limit of 5,000 applications for 2014, so first come, first served; 2. The minimum income of the sponsor will have to be 30% above the minimum necessary income (MNI), this percentage figure, I

Sponsorship Program scheduled to re-open 2014, but dependent childrenno more

think, was plucked from thin air; 3. The period for demonstrating the MNI will be increased from one year to three years, so you are out of luck, if you dont meet income requirement right now it; 4. Only income proof accepted will be the Revenue Canada Notice of Assessment, therefore new permanent residents will not be able to apply for at least three years; 5. The sponsorship undertaking period has been increased to 20 years instead of 10. This will mean that even if the sponsor will have a financial responsibility double the time; and the most assiduous addition to the program: 6. The age of dependent children will be decreased from 21 to 18 years of age, which means that the sponsors brothers or sisters over 18 years of age will not be able be included in the application. So lots of un-married daughters and sons in full time education will have to be left behind. This makes no sense at all. Canada needs younger people to contribute to the economy, BUT, contrary to this requirement, the Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism has taken this step, which will cause untold hardship for Canadians, and the breakup of many extended families. Big Catch
A morning fishing trip turned into an exciting excursion for two friends after they reeled in a 1.8-metre Grouper weighing 97.5 kilograms, (215 pounds). Vicky Nath of Nausori went fishing with his friend Nikhil Prasad and caught the fish between Leleuvia and Bau islands. This is the first time I have caught a fish this big, Mr Nath said. Mr Nath as a child used to accompany his father, Ravin Nath on family fishing trips where he developed fishing as a hobby. I have been fishing for years and have caught many big fish but this is my biggest catch so far. It was a two-hour long struggle to land the big fish. Mr Nath said he had to call his father who hired another boat to come and help them reel in the fish. Mr Nath said the fish, which was caught using an 80-pound fishing line, would be sold. Labour Party's Lal - Im Ready

Option For Home Builders

For new home builders, a new cheaper more resistant option is now available. Met Frame, a subsidiary company of hardware giant Vinod Patel, has come up with the option of building homes, completely with steel. Manager of the Steel Division, Phillip Pearce, explained the new technology they are now using will provide Fijians with an affordable option for building their homes. Mr Pearce said in recent days they had noticed a shortage of timber, which gave them the idea of building homes completely of steel and magnesium oxide boards. The houses, he claims, would be fire resistant, termite resistant and would withstand a category three cyclone. This is the next big thing for Fiji. This technology is new and exclusive to Met Frame, Mr Pearce said. While the steel rolls are imported, everything else which goes into building of the houses are entirely Fijian made. The houses come with insulated roof, steel stud frame building while the flooring is concrete, however, other options for flooring are being considered as well, Mr Pearce said. Met Frame for rehab works With the recent shortage of timber, there had been a stop on cyclone rehabilitation work. Commissioner Western Commander JoeliCawaki said they intend to build 800 more homes as part of their rehabilitation work. He said with the timber shortage, they were now looking at Met Frame to provide materials for rehabilitation work.

Two men accused of the murder of 21-year-old Shalvin Prasad have plead not guilty. Shivneel Kumar, 18, and Bryne Permal, 20, appeared in the Auckland High Court for the first call over in their case. The pair will go to trial in July next year. Justice Lang continued a District Court suppression order of details relating to alleged statements made by Kumar to police. He and his co-accused will appear in court on August 7 in an attempt to set a date for a pre-trial hearing, with the defence currently contesting some Crown evidence.

Shalvin Prasad Murder Accused Plead Not Guilty

The pair were jointly charged with Mr Prasads murder after his burnt body was discovered by a member of the public in the south Auckland suburb of Kingseat in January. Mr Prasad's brother, Pravin Prasad, said his brother's death had torn the family apart. "It's just so surreal," he said. "Sometimes I think he'll come home after work, but I now realise he won't." Mr Prasad withdrew tens of thousands of dollars before he disappeared on January 30. His body was discovered on fire at 6:30am on January 31 by a member of the public, about 5m back from McRobbie Road.

As construction activity and investment in the country is growing, so are the businesses. One such company is Carptrac, a subsidiary of Carpenters, which is currently going through a growth phase because of recent activities in the industry. Carptrac manager, Ivan Lauri, said they are receiving a lot of inquiries for new Caterpillar equipment across the complete product range including generators. In response to this growth, Mr Lauri said Carptrac has invested heavily in training and new equipment for their workshop as well as two new field service vehicles. Carptrac is committed to providing the best possible aftersales service to our customers through staff training, he said. This is to ensure Carptrac and Caterpillar are the first choice when it comes to heavy equipment and generators. Mr Lauri said Carptrac was established in Fiji in 1928 and this year 2013 marks their 85th year in operation. He said this makes Carptrac one of the oldest Caterpillar dealers in the world. Carptrac supervisor, Shalveen Maharaj said a second Carptrac equipment has been delivered in Sigatoka with a third delivery expected in Rakiraki in due course. Mr Lauri said it was a great honour that Carptrac was chosen to be the preferred supplier of the Cat D4K bulldozer to the Government. Milk Collection Begins In West

New Brand Of Chicken For North

Fiji Dairy Limited has started collecting milk in the Western Division for the Ba Chilling Centre. Group marketing director, Nathan Hildebrand, confirmed the chillers are up and running at the Southern Cross Foods Limited factory in Ba. He said the collection has started and over 1000 liters of milk was collected from around 23 dairy farms from Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki. The trucks used to collect milk from the dairy farms were all paid for by Southern Cross Foods, Mr Hildebrand said. The milk will be collected for two days and will be kept in the chilling centre at a reasonable temperature

The Elections Office is currently working on a system to register Fijian citizens living overseas. It is understood that the exercise will take place once the current Phase III of the Electronic Voter Registration is completed. Permanent Secretary responsible for Elections, Mohameed Saneem is currently in Labasa overseeing voter registrations there. Phase III of voter registration is expected to be completed by June 29. Minister Responsible for Elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said in an earlier statement to Fijians who live overseas: The Elections Office is currently focusing its energy and resources on ensuring that the EVR deployment plan is carried out in a credible and transparent manner. After this process has been completed, the Elections Office can then properly perform outreach to those Fijians living abroad. By the halfway mark of Phase III another 13,112 Fijians had registered to vote.

before it gets transported to Suva in chilling trucks every other day. Mr Hildebrand said the milk collection means more money going into the pockets of dairy farmers. Promising start Mr Hildebrand noted that for a community where dairy farming is quite new, the amount of milk collected was quite promising. Its a good start not a massive amount but its promising. We are impressed with what we have, he said. We cant start too big too soon. We have more capacity and we want to see more farmers getting into dairy industry.

How to register

During the registration process which takes approximately five minutes voters will be asked to have their photograph and thumbprint taken. Thumbprints are collected by an electronic scanner, which saves this

biometric marker as an electronic file along with a photograph. According to the Elections Office, one of the major benefits of this electronic voter registration system is that it will help eliminate voter fraud by accurately identifying an individual who tries to vote more than once. A Canadian Company CODE, Inc. was engaged to design Fijis Electronic Voter Registration (EVR) system. CODE, Inc. produced the hardware and software which includes biometric technology and provided the necessary support and training for the Elections Office. The Elections Office wish to remind individuals to make sure they have one form of identification before going to register. On the day you register, you will also be asked to provide one valid form of ID and provide the registration clerk with information, such as your name, address and occupation. EVR teams are stationed in locations around the country on Mondays through to Saturdays and mobile registration teams will be going door to door on Sundays. All Fijians of voting age, 18 years and older, are encouraged to consult the public notices published in the Fiji Sun and broadcast on radio to find the dates and opening hours of VRCs near them.

People in the North will be able to see a new brand of chicken in the supermarket fridges from next week. Best Chicken is being introduced by Siberia Halal Meat. Government had funded the project on the new brand chicken and was approved by the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development & Statistics in December 2011. Integrated Human Resources Development Programme project manager Mohammad Aslam Khan said the installation of a meat bird packaging machine had been completed. Mr Khan said the total cost for this project was about $40,000 including the purchasing of machines, building of chicken sheds and packaging. Mr Khan said the idea of implementing this project is to encourage other smallholder farmers to enter into

A "busy" Palmerston North drug dealer has been jailed for supplying methamphetamine and cannabis, thwarting his plans to return to Fiji. Between November 2011 and February last year, Isaiah Taukave McGoon, 41, used his cellphone to arrange deals before delivering the drugs on demand. On 110 occasions, he supplied methamphetamine to unknown clients - a total of 11.65 grams, worth $11,650. He also made 70 cannabis deals, selling tinnies and measured amounts of the drug. On top of that, McGoon offered to sell methamphetamine on 30 occasions and cannabis 40 times. McGoon admitted one charge each of supplying methamphetamine, offering to supply the drug, supplying cannabis and offering to supply it. In the Palmerston North District Court, he was given a prison sentence of two years and 10 months. "You were, there's no doubt, a busy

street-level drug dealer," Judge Mike Behrens told McGoon. "There was, I think, significant planning involved which adds to the seriousness of what you did." The judge shaved time off McGoon's sentence for his guilty pleas, remorse and time spent on electronically monitored bail. However, he ruled out home detention, which had been suggested by defence lawyer Simon Hewson. "One of the purposes of this sentence is to make others who might think of going into the drug-dealing business realise the consequences of doing so," Judge Behrens said. Mr Hewson said McGoon had turned his life around and had completed an alcohol and drug rehabilitation programme. McGoon planned to return to his native Fiji, where his ageing parents lived and he owned land. "It's important to him to pay his debt to this community and look to the future."

A mother has appeared in court accused of cutting her 14-month-old baby and stabbing her partner at their Christchurch home. Leah Stacey Chandler, 23, appeared before Christchurch District Court facing two charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. She did not enter a plea to either charge and was remanded on bail to a post-committal conference on August 23, with conditions that she doesn't consume alcohol and abides to a 6pm to 9am curfew. A bid by her duty lawyer Mark Callaghan for interim name suppression was refused by Judge Richard Watson. Police allege Chandler used a hunting knife to stab her partner 30-year-old Donald Williams while he was holding the couple's son, who suffered minor cuts.

Mother Accused Of Cutting Baby Prince Philip Jokes As He Leaves Charged Hospital After Abdominal Surgery
Detective Sergeant Chris Power said both were treated at hospital and discharged. "It is extremely fortunate the man's injuries were not more serious,'' he said. "They had the potential to be lifethreatening.'' Mr Williams said he received a 5cmdeep cut near the base of his back, while his son's forearm was injured. Both wounds required stitches. Against medical wishes, he discharged himself, wanting to "get my boy sorted''. The sandblaster, currently between jobs, was impressed by how his son coped with the presence of the emergency services and his visit to hospital. "He seems completely fine, thank God,'' Mr Williams said.

US Man Lonnie Kocontes Charged For Tossing Wife Overboard

A GRAND jury has indicted a man on charges he strangled his ex-wife and tossed her off a cruise ship in Italy.

The Orange County Register says 55-year-old Lonnie Kocontes, of Florida, didn't enter a plea at his arraignment Monday. He was indicted on Friday on a charge of murder for financial gain. He'll try to have the case dismissed at a June 26 hearing, arguing that local authorities lack jurisdiction to prosecute.

Mr Kocontes and 52-year-old Micki Kanesaki were divorced but had lived together on and off in Mission Viejo. They were sharing a cabin on a 2006 cruise when she went overboard. Her body later washed ashore. An investigation began after Lonnie Kocontes began taking money from her accounts. He was arrested earlier this year.

Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip has walked out of hospital, 10 days after undergoing exploratory abdominal surgery. The 92-year-old royal patriarch, who went under the knife on June 7, smiled and waved as he left the private London Clinic in the centre of the British capital. He had been expected to remain in hospital for up to two weeks following the operation, and he plans to spend two months off duty recuperating. "The duke is in good condition and good spirits. He'll take a period of convalescence of approximately two months," a Buckingham Palace spokesman said. "The duke has expressed his thanks and appreciation to medical staff at the London Clinic and the many members of the public who have sent good wishes." The palace has not said why Prince Philip needed the operation, only that it followed abdominal investigations

the week before. Officials insist he is otherwise in robust health. The Duke of Edinburgh joked with nurses as he left and shook hands with senior hospital staff on the doorstep. He then walked briskly to his waiting vehicle, getting into the passenger side unaided. He lowered the window to wave and smile at people waiting outside the hospital. He will initially spend time at Windsor Castle, west of London, where the Queen - an avid horse racing fan and a noted breeder - is staying during the nearby Royal Ascot races week. He spent his 92nd birthday in hospital on June 10 and has had a string of visitors to see him, including the queen, their eldest son Prince Charles and his sons, Princes William and Harry. Prince Philip has received more than 1,000 cards from well-wishers during his time at the London Clinic, the palace said.

New Zealand has passed a new law allowing authorities to detain groups of asylum seekers for six months. The country's parliament passed changes to the Immigration Act to allow groups of 30 or more asylum seekers to be detained for up to six months. Under the law, any asylum seeker deemed to be a refugee will not be eligible for permanent residency for three years, after which their status may be reassessed. New Zealand's immigration minister Michael Woodhouse says it is only a

matter of time before an asylum seeker boat arrives in New Zealand. He says the law will ensure authorities will be able to effectively deal with any mass arrival and will send deter people smugglers from targeting New Zealand. The opposition New Zealand Labour party says the government is scaremongering to distract voters from a string of recent scandals. Amnesty International says the law breaches international human rights and refugee conventions - a claim the government denies. An elephant has trampled a 12-year-old girl to death after dragging her away from her home in a remote region of southeastern Nepal, police say. Three members of the girl's family managed to flee when the elephant stormed into their rural home on Monday night but the youngster was unable to escape in time, police officer Pralhad Keshari told the reporter. Keshari said police chased the elephant

away following the attack at the home on farmland near Dholbazar, a village on the border with India, 370km southeast of Kathmandu. Nepal has seen a growing number of such deadly attacks on humans, with deforestation forcing wildlife to stray into villages as they hunt for food. A tiger mauled two people to death in central Nepal last month, dragging one of the victims from a hut.

Samoan Airline Introduces 'XLClass' For 130Kg+ Passengers

Samoa Air, the world's first airline to charge people according to their weight, is set to introduce an 'XL class' to cater for bigger passengers. The airline is modifying its aircraft to cater for people who weigh more than 130 kilograms. Samoa Air chief executive Chris Langton has told the reporter that the company has modified one of the rows in the aircraft and added a ramp for easier access. "Once you're up around that sort of [weight] ... a traditional seat on any airline is going to be uncomfortable," he said. "Quite often the access is difficult, and even the space between the seats is enough that even when you've squeezed into the seats there's no room for your legs. "We don't have a large fleet of aero planes, but we wanted to do something that recognises that we are thinking about this." Mr Langton says the row has been extended by 12 - 14 inches (30 - 35 centimeters) and the changes will be rolled out across the fleet by the end of the week. He says he expects more airlines to make modifications to accommodate

the changing shape of their passengers. "That's where the XL has come in we do it with shirts and clothing and other things where we have different standard sizes," he said. "The airline industry is going to have to do that - we're going to have to provide a range of seats categorized in terms of weight and maybe some other indexes like height. "So when people travel they can give us those indicators and we can allocate them to an appropriate seat." Earlier this year Samoa Air introduced a "pay by weight" booking system, which requires passengers to type in their weight on the airline's online reservation system, where their fare is calculated. Rates range from $1 a kilogram on the airline's shortest domestic route to about $4.16 per kilogram for travel from Samoa to American Samoa. The rate includes a customer's body weight and baggage. The airline says that policy has been accepted and proved successful among travellers. Samoa Air started flying within Samoa in 2012 and has expanded to now connect a number of Pacific island nations.

Fashion Designers Domenico Dolce And Stefano Gabbana Sentenced To Jail For Tax Evasion
Italian fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have been sentenced to one year and eight months in prison for tax evasion of 200 million euros ($268 million). A Milan court also ordered the pair to pay a fine of 500,000 euros ($712,111) to Italy's national tax agency. Lawyers for Dolce and Gabbana, whose celebrity clients include Beyonce and Madonna, immediately said they would appeal against the sentences, which have been suspended in the meantime. Dolce and Gabbana were accused of having transferred control of their brands to a shell company in Luxembourg in 2004 and 2005 to avoid paying Italian taxes. Prosecutors had argued that setting up the Luxembourg company Gado - an acronym of the surnames of the two designers - while the company was operating out of Italy was a bid to defraud the state. In May, they had called for the pair to be jailed for two years and six months. In her closing speech at the trial, prosecutor Laura Pedio said there was "rock-solid proof" that the duo had committed "sophisticated tax fraud". She said Gado was "a sort of cloud with the consistency of gas", while fellow prosecutor Gaetano Ruta said it was "an artificial construction, the aim of which was to get a tax advantage". Although Dolce and Gabbana had originally been accused of tax evasion of about 1 billion euros, the court ruled that just 200 million euros of that sum was relevant. Four other people, including Dolce's brother Alfonso, were given suspended jail sentences. Investigators completed a probe into the designers and five other people in 2010, and the case was dismissed in April 2011 but reopened in November last year and went to trial. "All that I care about is making clothes, that's all. Let them do and say whatever

they want," Gabbana tweeted about the trial in April. "To be accused of something that's not true is not a pretty thing but the heart of the matter is, who cares? We'll all end

up in the ground in the end." Founded in 1985, Dolce & Gabbana employs more than 3,000 people and has 250 shops in 40 countries around the world.

Sopranos Star James Gandolfini Dies Of Heart Attack In Italy Aged 51

James Gandolfini, the burly actor best known for his Emmy-winning portrayal of a conflicted New Jersey mob boss in the acclaimed HBO cable television series The Sopranos, has died while on holiday in Rome. Gandolfini, 51, who began his career in live theatre in New York, died of a possible heart attack, HBO spokeswoman Mara Mikialian told Reuters. We're all in shock and feeling immeasurable sadness at the loss of a beloved member of our family," HBO said in a statement. "He was a special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone, no matter their title or position, with equal respect. He touched so many of us over the years with his humour, his warmth and his humility." Since The Sopranos ended its run in 2007, Gandolfini appeared in a number of big-screen roles, including the espionage thriller Zero Dark Thirty and the comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. At the time of his death, Gandolfini had been working on an upcoming new HBO series titled Criminal Justice. He is survived by his wife Deborah Lin, a daughter, and a son from a previous marriage. Gandolfini broke ground with his signature portrait of Tony Soprano, the head of a fictional New Jersey mob family. As Tony Soprano, Gandolfini created a gangster far different from any previously seen in American television or film. He was capable of killing enemies with his own hands but was prone to panic attacks. He loved his wife, Carmela, played by Edie Falco, and was a doting father, but he carried on a string of extramarital affairs. He regularly saw a therapist, played by Lorraine Bracco, to work out his anxiety problems and issues with his mother. The show, which earned Gandolfini three Emmy Awards as best lead actor in a drama series, was considered by many critics at the time the finest drama to have aired on US television. Gandolfini's role also paved the way for a parade of popular prime-time shows built around profoundly flawed characters and anti-heroes, from Dexter and Breaking Bad to Mad Men and Nurse Jackie. A New Jersey native, Gandolfini

worked as a truck driver, bouncer and nightclub manager in New York City before he went to an acting class with a friend and got hooked. "I'd also never been around actors

before," he told Time magazine, "and I said to myself, 'These people are nuts; this is kind of interesting.'" Tributes to the actor have started to pour in on social media.

An 11-year-old boy in New Zealand has become a father after conceiving a child with the 36-year-old mother of a school friend. The woman coerced the boy, from Auckland, into repeated sexual encounters over a period of time before becoming pregnant, the New Zealand Herald daily reported. The woman gave the boy beer to drink and then later took part in a sexual encounter with him, the report said. The sexual contact continued for a number of months after the initial encounter. The boy had turned 12 by the time the child was born.

11-Yr-Old Fathers Child With 36-Yr-Old Woman

The Child Youth and Family Services, which took a baby into care about two months ago, confirmed it was dealing with a case at the school and that it was before the courts. According to the report, both the father and child are now understood to be in care after the principal at the boy's school raised the alarm. The case has caused counsellors working in the area of child sexual abuse to highlight the lack of attention given to women as potential offenders. It has prompted justice minister Judith Collins to step in saying she will seek information on the law. "This case raises an important point. I will seek advice from officials on whether or not a law change is required." And it has also highlighted disparity in the law of rape, which makes it impossible for a woman to be accused of

the crime. Present legislation stipulates the crime of rape applies only when men force sex. In contrast, women who force an unwilling partner to have sex face charges of sexual violation. Both carry a maximum sentence of 20 years but only men can be charged with rape.

Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, participated in the launch of the Government of Canadas muchanticipated next-generation Open Data Portal, which will provide unprecedented access to government data and information. The new Open Data Portal is a remarkable tool that enables Canadians to easily access important information about immigration to Canada, and use this information to spur innovation and economic growth, said Minister Kenney. I encourage all Canadians to visit our datasets if they have not yet done so as the information is useful and relevant, and there is great potential for its use. Immigration data is already the most sought information on the Open Data Portal. In fact, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has the six most downloaded datasets on the Portal. These datasets include information about Canadas immigrants countries of origin, preferred immigration programs, settlement patterns as well as application inventories and processing times. As Minister Kenney highlighted the importance of making immigration data available to Canadians, Prime Minister Harper promoted an international Open Data Charter of

Canada Launches Next Generation Open Data Portal

Principles at the G-8 Leaders Summit in Northern Ireland. The Charter commits Canada to the release of more data via a comprehensive online registry of data holdings, and to giving users unrestricted rights to re-use that data. The Charter also sets standards for data quality, interoperability, and comparability, and prioritizes highvalue data types for early release. In each case, Canadas current and planned Open Data practices exceed or meet the requirements of the Charter. By upholding these principles, Canada is demonstrating its international commitment to transparency and Open Government. Data.gc.ca contains datasets compiled by over 20 departments and agencies, covering a broad range of topics, from housing, to health and environmental data. Some of the most popular datasets include: statistics on wait time for permanent residency status, wait times at border crossings and information about soldiers in World War I. The next generation Data.gc.ca site features new interactive capabilities and Web 2.0 features, including a new targeted search capabilities and a Developers Corner, where Open Data developers can access specific technical information to assist them in creating user-friendly applications. The Portal also features the new Open Government Licence, which offers unrestricted re-use of government data and information. As CIC datasets on the Open Data

Portal are already the six most popular among government departments, CIC intends to make even more of information available online in the near future.

Effective immediately, applicants for Canadian citizenship who fail the citizenship test will now be granted a second opportunity to pass. In order to acquire Canadian citizenship, Canadian permanent residents must meet a number f requirements, including sitting and passing an exam on Canadian culture and history. Previously, individuals who failed the test were required to wait for months in order to appear before a citizenship judge, who would then make the final decision on their case for Canadian citizenship. Now, applicants who fail will be given a second opportunity to write the test two weeks later. Individuals who failed their test and are currently waiting to be heard by a citizenship judge will also be given the option to take the test again. The Government of Canada remains committed to maintain Canadas tradition of high numbers of permanent residents

taking up full citizenship, and this is one of many recent improvements that have been made to the citizenship process to ensure the timely welcoming of new citizens, said Immigration Minister Jason Kenney. Since 2006, Canada has welcomed the highest sustained levels of immigration in Canadian history. Accordingly, the demand for citizenship has increased by 30 per cent, with Canada averaging approximately 200,000 new citizens each year. Another improvement that has been made to the citizenship process involves allowing family members to be approved at separate times. Previously, family members who apply together for citizenship have been held up because a single family member has failed the citizenship test. Now those who pass can individually obtain citizenship. The Government of Canada has also approved the addition of more citizenship judges, with eight being appointed this year alone.

Illegal Use Of Disabled Parking Spots On Rise, Officials Say

Calgary Parking Authority has issued 3,284 tickets so far this year The Calgary Parking Authority says it's seeing a steady increase in the number of drivers who illegally take spots designated for people with disabilities. Officials say 3,284 tickets have been handed out since January. Although we typically see an increase in the number of these infractions during cold weather, the increasing trend over the past few years is a growing concern, said Miles Dyck, CPAs manager of parking enforcement. In 2010, the authority issued 6,010 tickets, and the number of infractions had gone up to 7,130 last year. We want to ensure that accessible parking spaces are left for people with disabilities because they rely on them to access our city, Dyck said. Motorists who park in designated disabled parking spaces or accessible loading zones without a valid permit can be fined $200 if paid within 10 days, $250 if paid within 30 days and $300 after 30 days.

The B.C. Teacher Regulation Branch has reprimanded a Vancouver teacher after she duct-taped her students' mouths in an effort to keep them quiet. Margo Fowler, a math teacher at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School, is rated as a top-notch educator on the popular website RateMyTeachers. com, where students describe her as "helpful," "entertaining" and "Just. Plain. Awesome." But documents posted on the Teacher Regulation Branch's website say Fowler was involved in three separate incidents where she broke professional standards by duct-taping the mouths of her students.

In one case, Fowler gave a talkative Grade 8 student an ultimatum to go to the school office or have his mouth duct-taped shut. He opted for the latter, and a friend then posted his picture on Facebook. The second incident involved a Grade 10 student, who Fowler also warned to be quiet or face the tape, before ducttaping his mouth shut. The final incident saw a Grade 8 student, who was talking loudly in Fowlers class, duct-tape his own mouth shut on her orders, the consent resolution agreement said. The branch has issued Fowler a reprimand citing professional misconduct.

U.S. business magnate Donald Trump and his family are in Vancouver to announce the details of an exclusive deal to build the city's first Trump Tower. Trump, along with sons Donald and Eric, and daughter Ivanka, have licensed the Trump brand to Vancouver developers Holborn and TA Global. The CBC learned of the relationship back in February, when it discovered the developers were rebranding their Arthur Erickson inspired, twisting tower with luxury condos as the city's first Trump tower. When the project was originally launched before the global economic

Another 123 luxury condos were planned for the upper floors, priced between $2.5 million and $10 million, with the penthouse priced at $28 million. But when the recession hit in 2008 the luxury market collapsed. The project was halted and early buyers were refunded their money. The project was restarted in April 2012, with 290 condo units aimed at a lower price point, at a location on the 1100-block of West Georgia Street.

Home Phone Numbers Being Ripped Off In Latest Scam

The number is hijacked to call others and gain information A warning about a new phone scam making the rounds. There have been several complaints of scammers hijacking the home phone numbers of unsuspecting people to cheat others. The scammers are picking the number at random and calling unsuspecting people, telling them theyve won a prize. But the number that shows up on the call display is that of an innocent person, like Eleanor Masecar. I just would have assumed your telephone number is a little more secure. Its not, they can just randomly make a call based on your personal information, she says. Mounties showed up at her home asking questions about who she had called and when. The scammer will usually phone and say theyre calling from Telus, a bank or even an airline. Shawn Hall with Telus says this is being called caller-ID spoofing which usually involves scammers who are off-shore. They use the name of a reputable organization, whether its Telus or an airline or a bank and say theyre from that organization but theyre not. They do it in an effort to try to scam you out of personal information, says Hall. He says if you get a suspicious call like that hang up and call police.

Widow Fights To Abolish Cruel Hospital Parking Fees

Skagit Bridge Reopens With Temporary Span

An 82-year-old widow from Richmond is leading the charge to have hospital parking fees abolished at Metro Vancouver hospitals, after she paid almost $1,800 in parking fees. Anne Graham spent weeks visiting her son Bruce at St. Pauls Hospital in Vancouver, where he was being treated for Lymphoma. "He looked so bad he had gone to a skeleton and you know you go down there you can't find a place to park you have to find a machine. It was just stressful in every sense of the word," said Graham. On Halloween last year, Bruce lost his battle with the disease. Then more tragedy struck Grahams family. Her husband, Don, was fighting bone and prostate cancer and she was back in her car heading to more hospitals and paying for more parking. Don spent 48 days in hospital before passing away in March. Graham says she spent a fortune on parking and says the hospital's parking policies are cruel. "You have enough on your mind. You don't need another problem outside the hospital and I visited him every day he was in, she said. Graham kept meticulous track of her expenses and she estimates she spent nearly $1,800 on hospital parking in the past year. She contacted CTV News after getting no response from her local MLA. "I wanted to stir the pot and get something started so that this could be discussed and somebody's got to make a break or change their minds so that something can be done, she said. Consumer reporter Lynda Steele took Graham's concerns to the person in charge of hospital parking in the Metro Vancouver-area. Geoff Roberts, the director of parking for the Fraser, Vancouver Coastal and Providence health authorities, says the hospital's pay parking program is flexible, offering seniors rates and concessionary passes in hardship cases where a family or patient is unable to pay for parking. The information is available through the individual sites through administration," said Roberts. CTV sent all of Grahams 2012 parking receipts to hospital officials who were upset to hear about her situation. After a review, they have decided to end her string of bad luck and reimburse her $688, half of her 2012 parking costs. Graham says she is pleased with the decision, but wont be fully satisfied until hospital parking is free for everyone.

Backbencher Asks Ethics Watchdog To Revisit Trudeau Speaking Gigs

An illegal albino Burmese python has been caught in the wilderness near Chilliwack, B.C., after the owner apparently dumped him to avoid getting into trouble. The two-metre snake, which is native to South Asia and Southeast Asia, didn't take well to the B.C. backcountry and is reportedly in bad shape. Veterinarian Adrian Walton is currently nursing the reptile back to health at his clinic in Maple Ridge. "He is absolutely beautiful yellow snake," Walton said. "He's extremely friendly. This kind of snake is what I

call the Great Dane of the snake world." Walton said new legislation means a permit is required to to own any of these animals. "A lot of people never pursued their permits, and so when they decide they want to get rid of them, there's really no where to give them." Walton is hoping the authorities will be able to find a loving home for the as yet unnamed snake. In the wild, Burmese pythons can grow as long as almost six metres, and once fully grown, can weigh as much as almost 70 kilograms.

A Tory MP wants the federal ethics watchdog to take a closer look at Justin Trudeau's speaking gigs. Specifically, Ontario backbencher Ben Lobb asked the conflict of interest and ethics commissioner to zero in on a handful of events paid for by unions. "After receiving $35,000 in payment from two unions, the member is now promising to slow down, block and impede legislation (Bill C-377) that would require greater financial transparency for the very unions from which he received payments," he wrote. Trudeau brushed off Lobb's attempt to get Mary Dawson's office to sniff around his past speaking engagements. "The Conservative have one approach which is to try and sling as much mud as as they possibly can and hope that it sticks," he said. Dawson gave Trudeau the all-clear to

moonlight as a paid speaker after he was elected in 2008. She also rebuffed an attempt by Tory MP Dean Del Maestro in 2010 to see whether Trudeau contravened the conflict of interest code for MPs for his work as a paid speaker. He had spoken at two events paid for by unions at the time. Trudeau also noted Wednesday "the vast majority of the organizations we spoke to are not asking for any money back or restitution." He recently offered a cash-back guarantee to 17 organizations which hired him as a speaker since he was elected after the Conservatives made public a four-month-old letter from one charity, the New Brunswick-based Grace Foundation, asking Trudeau for a refund after an event they hired him for flopped.

Debit Card Scam Costs Richmond Cab Company Thousands

A Richmond taxi company is shunning debit card payments after a rash of scams dealt a pricey loss to the company. Richmond Garden City Cabs hasnt been accepting debit card payments for several days and has been wary of credit cards since the company was recently scammed out of more than $8000. Police say thieves are using a default password setting on debit machine pin pads to refund money to their own card instead of paying the driver. In each case, the scammers told the driver their card was declined, allowing them to input the refund, said manager Ashiana Khan. The company was scammed nine times at an amount of $900 each time before a driver caught two thieves in the act, who were then able to escape. Khan says the move is hurting business for the companys dozens of drivers because tourists at the airport or cruise ship terminal dont carry cash with them. "When I say to the customer I can't accept the debit, definitely he will find another cab," said driver Azeem Khan. The Richmond Company is not the only victim of this type of scam, with apparently a Coquitlam taxi company and convenience stores also being affected. Police havent found the two suspects in the latest case, but hope the example serves as a lesson to merchants to change the default password. What we recommend is for businesses to simply change the default password on the pin pads, because that's likely what the problem is," said Cpl. Sherrdean Derkatch. Garden City Cabs has since eliminated the refund option on their cash machines and they expect to resume debit transactions.

The Canada Border Services Agency is warning of a possible telephone scam. The CBSA says it has recently learned that people purporting to be employed at the agency's Border Information Service have been calling Canadians and requesting personal information and payment over the phone. Summer Sun Protection For Kids

Coloring

Brush up on your knowledge of sunscreen and sun protection for infants through middle school-aged kids. Lazy days at the pool or beach are warm weather rituals for many families. But if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without the proper sun protection, youre taking an unhealthy risk. It only takes one severe sunburn to potentially double your child's chances of getting melanoma later in life, says a pediatric dermatologist. We really need to buckle down and protect our young. Slather on the Sunscreen No Exceptions Remember how much you marveled at your baby's smooth skin? Don't let the sun destroy that beautiful canvas. Ultraviolet sunlight damages the skin and can lead to wrinkles and cancers later on. There is no such thing as a healthy tan; a tan is a sign of sun damage. Always put sunscreen on your child before going outside. Make a fun game out of it. Teach your child to spell BEENS to help you remember to cover often-forgotten spots: Back of knees, Ears, Eye area, Neck, and Scalp. Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. Then reapply every 2 hours, or sooner if your child has been swimming. Water-resistant sunscreen wears off -- check the label to see how soon you'll need to reapply. If your child attends school or daycare, make sure teachers are told to apply sunscreen before any outdoor activities. Choose a Child-Friendly Sunscreen Choose a sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide because the compounds are less irritating than others and do not get absorbed into the skin. These ingredients are probably the safest ones out there. There is some concern that other sunscreen ingredients, particularly oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate (a form of vitamin A), may cause harm. However, both chemicals are FDA approved for use in sunscreens. Other tips: Opt for a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. Let your child choose a colored or scented sunscreen. Nix this idea if your child has sensitive skin or an allergic skin disorder, such as eczema. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are less likely to drip. Cover Up Head to Toe Sunscreen is only part of sun safety.

Try staying inside from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are strongest. Clothing can also help. The best sun protection is something that completely blocks the sun from getting to the skin, which is clothing if you're not inside a building. But forget about tossing on a flimsy, white tee. A white T-shirt has limited protective value. If you can see through the tee, the sun can shine through and burn the skin. Dark, tight-woven clothing that covers all exposed skin is best. You can also buy clothing that is specially treated with chemicals that help protect against ultraviolet sunlight. Sun-protective clothing, such as a kid's swim shirt or rash guard shirt, with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 30 or higher. The clothing loses its UPF strength after several washings, so check the labels for care instructions. Wear a Hat Take your child hat shopping, but be sure to purchase a hat with a wide brim that casts a shadow on the face. Too old for Barney? Look for a favorite sports team or school logo. Sunglasses are another outdoors musthave. They are an important part of sun protection and recommended for kids of all ages. Make sure they filter both UVB and UVA rays. Two-year-old Anna Cheever never goes outside without her sunglasses and hat. She's worn a hat since birth, and nowadays will remind her mom if she forgets. Being a role model is vital to helping your kids establish healthy sun habits. If they see you skipping the sunscreen, working on a tan, or forgoing a hat, chances are they will do so too. Soothing a Sunburn If your child gets sunburn and is active and playful and does not have any blisters, here's how you can make him feel better. Place a cool compress on the sunburn. Apply aloe gel to the burned skin. Try placing the aloe in the fridge for a few minutes first before using. Give acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Check with your doctor for the correct dose. Give your child plenty of fluids. Do not use over-the-counter pain relieving products containing benzocaine on sun-burned skin. (These are called topical anesthetics.) They can often make the pain worse, and some people are allergic to the ingredient. If your child feels or looks ill, spikes a fever, or has blisters, get medical help.

Savitri Singh - Carlson, BScN, MSN, PhD Asthma (Az-muh) is a chronic disease that affects your airways. The airways are the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have asthma, the inside walls of your airways are inflamed (swollen). The inflammation (IN-flaMAY-shun) makes the airways very sensitive, and they tend to react strongly to things that you are allergic to or find irritating. When the airways react, they get narrower, and less air flows through to your lung tissue. This causes symptoms like wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), coughing, chest tightness, and trouble breathing, especially at night and in the early morning. Asthma cannot be cured, but most people with asthma can control it so that they have few and infrequent symptoms and can live active lives. When your asthma symptoms become worse than usual, it is called an asthma episode or attack. During an asthma attack, muscles around the airways

tighten up, making the airways narrower so less air flows through. Inflammation increases, and the airways become more swollen and even narrower. Cells in the airways may also make more mucus than usual. This extra mucus also narrows the airways. These changes make it harder to breathe. Asthma attacks are not all the same some are worse than others. In a severe asthma attack, the airways can close so much that not enough oxygen gets to vital organs. This condition is a medical emergency. People can die from severe asthma attacks. So, if you have asthma, you should see your doctor regularly. You will need to learn what things cause your asthma symptoms and how to avoid them. Your doctor will also prescribe medicines to keep your asthma under control. Taking care of your asthma is an important part of your life. Controlling it means working closely with your doctor to learn what to do, staying away from things that bother your airways, taking medicines as directed by your doctor, and monitoring your asthma so that you can respond quickly to signs of an attack. By controlling your asthma every day, you can prevent serious symptoms and take part in all activities. If your asthma is not well controlled, you are likely to have symptoms that can make you miss school or work and keep you from doing things you enjoy. Asthma is one of the leading causes of children missing school.

What Is Asthma?

some allergens early in your life may increase your chances of developing asthma.

What Causes Asthma Symptoms and Attacks?

What Causes Asthma?

It is not clear exactly what makes the airways of people with asthma inflamed in the first place. Your inflamed airways may be due to a combination of things. We know that if other people in your family have asthma, you are more likely to develop it. New research suggests that being exposed to things like tobacco smoke, infections, and

There are things in the environment that bring on your asthma symptoms and lead to asthma attacks. Some of the more common things include exercise, allergens, irritants, and viral infections. Some people have asthma only when they exercise or have a viral infection. The list below gives some examples of things that can bring on asthma symptoms. Allergens Animal dander (from the skin, hair, or feathers of animals) Dust mites (contained in house dust) Cockroaches Pollen from trees and grass Mold (indoor and outdoor) Irritants Cigarette smoke Air pollution Cold air or changes in weather Strong odors from painting or cooking Scented products Strong emotional expression (including crying or laughing hard) and stress Others Medicines such as aspirin and beta-blockers Sulfites in food (dried fruit) or beverages (wine) A condition called gastroesophageal (GAS-tro-e-sofo-JEE-al) reflux disease that causes heartburn and can worsen asthma symptoms, especially at night Irritants or allergens that you may be exposed to at your work, such as special chemicals or dusts Infections This is not a complete list of all the things that can bring on asthma

symptoms. People can have trouble with one or more of these. It is important for you to learn which ones are problems for you. Your doctor can help you identify which things affect your asthma and ways to avoid them.

Controlling Your Asthma

Asthma control is about more than just treating symptoms. Its about managing your asthma so you have few or no symptoms in the first place. When you have asthma, you always have inflammation or swelling in the airways of your lungs. You may not feel this inflammation, but your lungs do. Uncontrolled inflammation (swelling) makes your airways more sensitive to asthma triggers like pollen, dust, and smoke. Exposure to these triggers can cause constriction (tightening) of the muscles around your airways, leading to symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing, tightness of the chest, and coughing.
Is your asthma under control?

Do you experience asthma symptoms more than twice a week? Do you use asthma rescue medication more than twice a week? Do your asthma symptoms limit your activities? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you may not be in control of your asthma and it is important that you talk to your doctor to determine if an asthma-controller medicine, like SYMBICORT, is right for you. When your asthma is under control, you can do more of the things you like to do with fewer interruptions due to your asthma. You should have fewer asthma symptoms throughout the day and night. And you shouldnt need to rely on your rescue medicine as much. Its important to remember, though, that because they arent rescue medicines, controller medicines should not be used to treat sudden symptoms. Asthma cannot be cured, but it can be controlled.

'Bajatey Raho' Was Re-Written Many Times: Tusshar Kapoor

Sonakshi Sinha says her father, veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha is very happy with the promotional trailer of her forthcoming film "Lootera", and that he is eager to watch the movie. "He (dad) is very happy. The promo of 'Lootera' first came on internet, till that time it was not aired on TV, so he called one of his friends and said, 'Load this! I have to see the trailer'. happy when he saw it," Sonakshi said Tuesday on the set of the TV reality show "Emotional Atyachaar". "He said, 'This film seems to be different and interesting and I would definitely want to watch this film," said Sonakshi. Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, "Lootera" is a period romance and features Ranveer Singh opposite Sonakshi. It releases July 5.

Tusshar Kapoor has tried his hand at a different type of comedy with "Bajatey Raho" and says the film's team worked really hard on the script of the movie. "I have never worked in any film where the draft was changed so many times, such hard work was put in. It was rewritten so many times," the 37-year-old said at the first look launch of the film. Tusshar is glad to have worked with director Shashant Shah. "For an actor, director is a big factor when it comes to choosing a film. For me, working with him (Shah) has been a privilege because I loved 'Chalo Dilli' and I loved the script of 'Bajatey Raho'," he said.

Talking about one of his 'Bajatey Raho' moments Tusshar said: "Last week itself 'meri bajayi gayi thi'. When we were doing a photo session, our director announced that 'the film's length is perfect and Tusshar your one scene has been removed. It was there in the first draft, but now it has been removed'." "That was my favourite scene, but was removed for Shashant's happiness. Prabhudheva Wonders: How Did I Become Action Film Director?

He wears many hats and choreographeractor-director Prabhudheva says being a dancer he relates more to romance than action and wonders how he became an action film director. After directing two action movies in Bollywood - "Wanted" and "Rowdy Rathore", he dealt with his favourite genre in his forthcoming film "Ramaiya Vastavaiya", a romantic drama. "As a choreographer, I am actually related to the romantic part because songs happen only when romance happens. I don't know how I became an action director," the 40-year-old said in an interview. "When I did 'Wanted', people asked me you are a choreographer, how will you do an action film? But it happened," he added. "Ramaiya Vastavaiya" marks the debut of Girish Kumar, son of producer Kumar Taurani. Talking about Girish, Prabhudheva said: "I told Kumarji, when he booked me as the director, let me test him. He was hardworking and I liked him. One year later, we started the film." "In that one year I told Kumarji to let him just dance our own Bollywood dance and not send him to any foreign country to learn all that... So he did that and every 15 days, he would send me a CD and he kept going to the next level," he said. Shruti Haasan plays Girish's love interest in the film that also stars Sonu Sood, Randhir Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Poonam Dhillon and Satish Shah. It hits theatres July 19.

Priyanka Chopra Broke Into Tears While Shooting For Film

It's been only a week, actress Priyanka Chopra's father Dr Ashok Chopra passed away and the latter has soon resumed work. Priyanka, who was very close to her father, is back to work for the shooting of the upcoming movie, a biopic based on Mary Kom's life. A leading daily reports that Priyanka Chopra was accompanied by her mother Madhu Chopra on the sets. Priyanka, who will play the role of boxer Mary Kom in the upcoming film, reportedly broke down into tears

and got very emotional at the sets. But, she soon regained composure when her mother comforted her. After the puja, Priyanka dressed up in blue jersey and red shorts and gave the first shot in a boxing ring, fighting with a US boxer. Reportedly, PC has been working very hard to fit into the role of the renowned boxer. In fact, even when her father Dr Chopra was admitted in the hospital due to cancer, the actress practised and worked out hard for her role.

Since Hashmi is famous for his naughty avatar onscreen, it is expected that Bebo might have to compromise a bit in the upcoming flick. This is the first time Emraan and Kareena will be seen together in a film. Reportedly, the film will hit the floor end of this year. The film will be joint production by Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Motion Pictures and Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. Sources informed a leading daily that this will be a completely original flick and the "shooting will begin from SeptemberOctober in Mumbai and Delhi."

It has been 14 years that we have not seen Salman Khan as the lover boy, Prem. The last time we saw Salman Khan as Prem was in Sooraj Barjatya's Hum Saath Saath Hai in 1999 and if everything works out well, Salman might start working on Barjatya's next, this October. The Lone Ranger star, who is rarely photographed without a pair of tinted glasses, said he is near-sighted in the other eye and that's why he relies heavily on prescription glasses, as reported. "Everything is just very, very blurry. I've never had proper vision," he said. The 50-year-old actor, who has two children Lily-Rose, 14, and Jack, 11, with his ex-girlfriend Vanessa Paradis, said he can only see a few inches from his face if he is playing a character that does not wear glasses or sunglasses. Meanwhile, the actor, who is now dating actress Amber Heard, also revealed that he thinks about retiring from Hollywood 'every day'. "I think while I've got the opportunity and the desire and the creative spark to do the things that I can do right now, I should do them. And then, at a certain point, just take it down to the bare minimum and concentrate on, I guess, living life. "Really living life. And going somewhere where you don't have to be on the run, or sneak in through the kitchen or the underground labyrinth of the hotel. At a certain point, when you get old enough or get a few brain cells back, you realise that, on some level, you lived a life of a fugitive," he added.

Hangover star Bradley Cooper has been named the man with the world's sexiest hair. The 38-year-old star beat Ryan Gosling and former soccer ace David Beckham to the crowning glory in the poll of 2,000 women for hair brand Fudge. Cooper won this survey with almost half the vote to Gosling, who was on 20 per cent. "I love his style and the way he looked in The Hangover", a fan said. "My hair is natural and I keep it nourished to look like this," said Cooper. "Hope it stays like this for the rest of my life,"

We humans are people who work hard round the clock and sparsely have time out of our busy schedules to enjoy ourselves to our heart's content. We have our mundane and prosaic day to day concerns to be done. We have such a humdrum existence. Life, for most people, is a mad rush from one place to another, from one activity to another, trying to gather as much as possible. In this process, people tend to forget, who they are and what they are. There is no time to ponder and wonder. They tend to forget the values of life. To break the monotony of life, don't you think we need some time off, slacken on our work and relax ourselves by indulging in some traveling, touring and journeying? Traveling is the time when we can relax, reflect and ponder. Most people, after a pleasant travel, return home with a fresh outlook, new zeal and a better determination. Traveling has also a great informative value. It widens the grasp of our knowledge of geography, different cultures and people. It widens our mental horizon, improves health, adds thrill and relaxation to life, dispels boredom and helps promoting national integration. Traveling is an art of leisure. Nothing beats the scenic and picturesque beauty of the continent of Europe. It is a continent consisting of a multitude of countries, cultures and regional and ethnic communities. Europe is blessed with thousands of years of history and culture. It is also lucky enough to have a versatile range and diverse mix of cultures, settlements, traditions and customs. For many people it's the ultimate holiday destination and millions choose to stay in Europe each year. The continent leads the world in fashion, art, music, architecture and design. Not to mention that on an average Europeans live in the lap of luxury. It is a continent so rich in history that one could spend his life reading all about it. It is simply impossible for one to tour Europe and not be awestruck. ATHENS:

civilization, Athens is a city with the most glorious history in the world. Who hasn't heard of the Acropolis of Athens? Photos and history of this most famous archaeological monument in Europe have attracted tourists who come to see it from all over the world. We sailed around the Greek islands in a cruise, visiting many of the quaint little fishing villages. Each place we visited has a unique picturesque ambience of its own. We also explored the island's mountainous areas, sandy crescent shaped beaches, pretty rocky coves and unrivalled diverse landscapes. When the bright sun laid its golden rays on the pristine and turquoise waters of the Pacific, the scenery my eyes behold was singularly breathtaking. We had a scrumptious lunch of the famous Greek moussaka, feta cheese and Greek salad. Incredibly, a delectable cuisine! PARIS:

Life In Europe

After the year's frigid winter, the warm spring of this place welcomed us warmly. Our first destination was Athens - not just the enchanting country capital of Greece but also one of the cultural capitals of the world. The very first thing I noticed upon my arrival here was the decoration of the chapels in and around the city with confetti and lights put up for Easter, which was coming up in the next couple of weeks. The tranquility of this place confirmed my first impression that I was in a harmonious and sensational city. Being the city which is worshiped by gods and people and being a birthplace for

After leaving Athens behind, we traveled to Paris. It is truly criminal to leave Europe without visiting this city. It is a land of great contrasts, offering an endless choice of alluring destinations, a rich diversity of landscapes, cuisines, climates and peoples, with an exceptional cultural heritage. France has an incredible diversity of soaring landscapes, gorgeous villages and world-famous resorts. Besides the country's style, culture, architecture, food, wine and fashion which exist in multiple layers of excellence, the language is one of the most beautiful things about France. It is a place where you come across both modern and cultural heritage. It's probably the only city that seems to be run by love. Elegant palaces and luxurious hotels, fashionable nightclubs and expensive apartments make the ideal world of the rich and powerful. The romantic aura of the streets wet with rain has always been inspiring artists and poets, giving the impulse to creativity and great stories. Glorious past, numerous historical landmarks, breathtaking views, delicious food and exquisite wines from all over France - the city is full of surprises! What is a Range Rover Supercharged? The Rover Company, responsible for creating the Land Rover brand, has been building off-road utility vehicles since the 1950s. The Range Rover has been around since the 70s. It didnt always look so sleek and sexy, but its always been a highly capable off-roader - and thats why the Range Rover is so well known the world over. Range Rovers first vehicle was far from a luxurious model, and was pretty bare bones in terms of amenities. It was meant to be utilitarian and not much more. Todays Range Rover, now in its fourth generation, is all about allterrain capability as well as luxurious accoutrements. Technicalities The 2013 Range Rover is available in two styles: Supercharged or Autobiography. While there is a nearly $30k difference between the two, they sport the same 510-horsepower supercharged, 5.0L LR-V8 engine controlled via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Of course, both models also offer Range Rovers Terrain Response system and are height-adjustable as well. Permanent 4WD ensures the 2013 Range Rover remains surefooted no matter the conditions below its 21 wheels. The 2013 Range Rover Supercharged starts bidding at $114,750, while its even-more-luxurious brother, the Range Rover Autobiography, opens up at $144k even. Driving the Range Rover Supercharged Rolling along the streets of Lexington, Kentucky with luscious green fields on either side of me, the elegant the 2013 Range Rover Supercharged truly is as at home on smooth tarmac as it is on uneven gravel or even doorlevel wading water which I quickly discovered via a special off-road course

2013 Range Rover Supercharged

offered by Land Rover. What I really like about the 2013 Range Rover Supercharged is the smoothness with which those 510 horses are put to use when the throttle is pressed. Nothing is jarring or shocking in the Range Rover; its sinewy, silky, gentle, but man does it ever boogie. Youll quickly forget its size I always do. Gear changes are imperceptible. Although the Range Rover sports steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, I didnt use them at all. The 8-speed handles itself so well, its not necessary. With near-12 of ground clearance and a maximum water wading depth of 35.4, the 2013 Range Rover Supercharged could, essentially, take you anywhere you wanted to go in complete comfort and safety. From city streets to the Kentucky Horse Park grounds, my Range Rover happily went wherever I asked it to without trouble. The 2013 Range Rover Supercharged also, blissfully, handles like a much smaller vehicle than it actually is. The electronic speed-sensitive power assisted steering system is accurate and connected without feeling too heavy or laborious. Ins and Outs of the Range Rover Supercharged Theres no denying: This is one good-looking, classy SUV. The 2013 Range Rover Supercharged exudes aristocracy, sophistication and a hint of modernism. The newly designed front fascia is both menacing and regal. I adore the geometric, angular daytime running lights and the symmetrical layout of the new front fog lamps as well. The symmetry continues to the rear where the LED taillights are stacked to perfection. Details like the continued use of threes throughout the exterior is also a nice touch; they can be found from the gills on the side to the turn signals and front grille. Inside, the 2013 Range Rover Supercharged is as plush and comfortable as youd imagine. Not much changed for this fourth generation save for the pop-up shift knob (first seen in the Jaguar XF, and now commonplace across the companys lineup of vehicles). Otherwise, its standard Range Rover fair; which is fine by me. Comparing the Range Rover Supercharged When it comes to big, bold luxury, offroad SUVs the pickings are a bit slim. While many claim to do it all, few actually can especially to the extent that Range Rover does. However, should you be in the market for a Range Rover Supercharged you will want to take a look at the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, Mercedes-Benz GL63 and the BMW X5M, all of which can match the Rover in terms of luxury but will struggle to meet off-road capabilities.

ICBC'S Tips To Keep Cyclists Safe As Crashes Peak In B.C

out of traffic and avoid riding in the blind spots of vehicles. When turning, always hand signal well in advance of any turn. First shoulder check, then hand signal and then with both hands on the handlebars, shoulder check again before turning. Wear bright, reflective clothing so youre as visible as possible. If you ride at night, youre required to equip your bike with a white headlight visible at 150 metres and a rear red light and reflector visible at 100 metres but consider adding more lights for increased visibility. Even still, never assume you have been seen by a vehicle even when you have the right of way. Plan your route before you set off. If youre new to cycling, take routes that are less busy and use bike lanes when possible. Cyclists must follow the rules of the road just like any other vehicle. Tips for drivers: You should always actively look for cyclists in traffic. Wherever possible, make eye contact to let them know you have seen them. A cyclist often relies on eye contact as a means of communication as they try to anticipate your next move. Make yourself familiar with the hand signals that cyclists use. Shoulder checking is very important, especially when making right-hand turns at intersections and before you open your door to get out of your vehicle. When passing another vehicle, make sure you check for oncoming cyclists ahead of the vehicle you are passing. If you want to pass a cyclist, make sure there is enough space as a significant number of cyclist crashes result from side-swiping. Drivers must yield to cyclists as they do any other vehicle and should maintain at least three seconds of following distance. Cyclists sometimes need to react quickly and unexpectedly to avoid hazards on the road so an increased distance will give you more time to safely react. Do not drive, stop or park in a bike lane. If you need to cross a bike lane to turn right, or to pull to the side of the road, take extra care, signal well in advance and always yield to cyclists. Dont honk your horn at a cyclist unless you need to give them a warning. A loud honk could startle them or even cause them to fall.

An average of 150 cyclists are injured every month from May to October when crashes involving cyclists peak in B.C. ICBC is asking drivers and cyclists to share our roads and help keep everyone safe. Here are ICBCs tips for cyclists and drivers on how to share the road together: Tips for cyclists: Its important to perform regular maintenance and safety checks on your bike to prevent mechanical breakdown. The beginning of the cycling season is a

good time to get a tune up. Check the tires and that both the front and rear brakes are working properly and clean, inspect and lubricate the gear, chain and derailleur. Look for signs of wear on your helmet and make sure you use an approved bicycle helmet that meets safety standards. Its the law in B.C. and you could be fined for not wearing one. Bike helmets can prevent up to 85 per cent of serious injuries, which account for 80 per cent of all related deaths. Position yourself so other road users can easily see you dont weave in and

Many beauty salons offer "katori" waxing for facial hair. Cold wax would be safer for the face. Waxing strips are available. However, large areas of the face should not be waxed. For excessive facial hair, many women use a combination of methods, like threading chin and area above lips and bleaching the rest of the face. Or, threading chin and upper lip and waxing sideburns.

Although this is said to be a permanent method of hair removal, re-growth can occur. In electrolysis, the diathermy method was common. It involves the use of fine needles, through which an electric current is passed. But now a new procedure is being used, known as transdermal electrolysis, in which needles are not used. Also, superfluous hair can be removed from larger areas. In the earlier method, needles were introduced into the hair follicle to cauterise the hair root. This checked re-growth. The advantage of laser over electrolysis is that the laser light can scan broader areas. Therefore, fewer sessions are required. However, it is more expensive than electrolysis. Re-growth occurs in some cases, but is slower and scantier. It is very important to find a good laser clinic. The temporary known side effects are redness, swelling and itching. The main risk in laser treatment is the possibility of skin burns. The basic unisex sulu is wrapped once around the body and secured with a knot. Dressing cool is a must for Fiji. And the cooler the clothing the better. But keeping in mind traditional modesty its not advisable to wear something thats too skimpy or revealing. Beachwear is fine for the beach but not for anywhere else. So youre faced with the classic case of what to wear! What about a sulu? For those of you unfamiliar with the term a sulu is an article of clothing worn by people in Fiji. It is simply a rectangular piece of cloth that is kept on the body by tying a knot at the ends. Some Asian countries call it a sarong. Its known as a lavalava in Samoa and as a laplap in Papua New Guinea. And its the answer to staying cool without being too revealing. Varying where and how the knot is tied makes the sulu a very versatile piece of clothing appropriate for any occasion, whether it be lazing beside the pool or dressing for a night on the town. Sulu material is available in a wide variety of patterns and youre sure to find a piece that suits. Depending on your height, you will need between two and a half and three metres of fabric. And the range of fabrics available in shops means you can have sulus in every pattern and color. Go for the tie and dye look or the tapa design fabric a great souvenir. Readymade sulus are also available and one particular type is the printed sulu. Your resort should have its own selection of printed sulus for you to choose from. The basic unisex sulu is wrapped once around the body and secured with a knot either at the waist (for the guys) or at the bust line (for the ladies). For the beach, its common to see a sulu worn

as the bottom and topped with a T-shirt. Artful elegance in sulu wearing can be achieved by pulling the sulu around the waist, tying it at the back; the other half is taken up and tied around the neck in halter neck fashion. One unique way to wear your sulu is to take the top of the material and tie the ends at the back at bust line level. Bring the rest of the material straight down the front, through the legs and tie the two ends at the waist. There are almost as many ways to tie a sulu as there are patterns, but no matter how its worn, the sulu is certainly a cool piece of clothing one which is at home both at the beach and out for the night. However, this is not the only type of sulu thats available. There are other modified versions of the common sulu that have become everyday wear for men and women in Fiji. For women the sulu is worn in several ways with an added touch an elastic waistband. Fiji women often wear an outfit called a chamba which is made up of a top and a sulu. This is the common attire of most female resort and hotel workers in Fiji. Women attending Sunday church services or traditional Fijian functions will often wear a sulu (called a sulu-ira) underneath their dresses. The sulu also doubles as part of a dancers costume during the performance of a traditional Fijian meke (dance). Men often wear a more formal version of the sulu almost everywhere to work and to formal occasions like church services and gatherings. The sulu is called a sulu va taga - literally meaning a sulu with pockets. These versions have all evolved from the humble sulu making it a versatile piece of clothing indeed.

Deodorant and Perspiration Stain Removal Yellow underarm shirt stains are likely caused by a combination of deodorant and perspiration. Many deodorants and antiperspirants contain aluminum salts. When these salts are combined with laundry detergent, especially in cooler water settings, they are not easily dissolved, and they remain on the fabric. To remove the stains, try soaking the shirts in warm water with an enzyme pre-soak product or rubbing the soiled area with white vinegar. Wash in the hottest water safe for the fabric. If the stain remains, dampen and sprinkle stain with meat tenderizer. Let stand for about an hour, and launder again. To avoid new stains from forming, always wash the shirts in the hottest water safe for the fabric. Also, allow antiperspirant to dry completely before dressing. Removing Rust From Clothing is Easy The best way to get rust stains out of your clothing is to use a lemon, or table salt and cream of tarter.

Grandma Tips

Lemon To use a lemon, lay your garment on a flat surface on top of a towel. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice onto the rust stain. (If you do not have a lemon, you can use bottled lemon juice, it works just as well.) Lay your garment in the sun and allow it to dry. Once your garment has dried, look to see if the rust stain has lifted. If it has not, repeat the process. If the rust stain is removed, launder your garment. Salt and Cream of Tarter To use salt and cream of tarter, simply make a mixture using equal parts of both. Lay your garment on a flat surface on top of a towel. Spread your cream of tarter and salt mixture onto the rust stain. Place your garment in the sun and allow it to dry. If the rust stain has lifted, launder the shirt. If the rust stain has not lifted, repeat the process.

Flying Fijians Keep PNC Hopes Alive

TIMES SPORTS

Canucks Sign Swedish Netminder Joacim Eriksson

The Flying Fijians hope of winning their first Pacific Nations Cup title is still alive after they defeated USA Wednesday in Japan 35-10. Fiji won with a bonus point and now hopes to beat Tonga convincingly this weekend to grab the title. This hope also rests on the result of the Japan-Canada game, which was being played. Fijis tries came from halfback and Glasgow Warriors rep Nikola Matawalu and fullback Timoci Nagusa in the first spell to give them the 17-10 lead at the break. Matawalus try came from a loose ball during a USA scrum that saw the nippy halfback diving for the try. Returning from the breather rejuvenated, they further bolstered their hope with a try to Sakiusa Matadigo in the 46th minute after coming close on two other occasions in USA territory. Matadigo opened up the margin with a 22-10 lead before Seremaia Bai dissected the uprights again for a 2510 lead. In the 58th minute, a halves connection saw Matawalu setting up a try for substitute Nemia Kenatale to boost Fijis lead and for the bonus try to a 3210 lead. Bai then sealed the win with another penalty a minute away from the final whistle. Fiji won 35-10. Speaking after the game, Captain Akapusi Qera thanked his side for a job well done on a rainy Nagoya Municipal Mizuho Park Rugby Ground. We thank the Lord for the beautiful weather. This win is a bonus for us and

the boys defended well, I thank them and the crowd that we have here and back home, the Gloucester-based player said. Japan rallies past Canada Ayumu Goromaru scored all his teams points on Wednesday as Japan rallied to beat Canada 16-13 in the Pacific Nations Cup rugby tournament. Canada, which could have won the tournament with a win, took a 3-0 lead after the first half on a penalty by James Pritchard. Japan went ahead 6-3 early in the second half on two penalties by Goromaru. A try by Ciaran Hearn, converted by Pritchard, gave the visitors a 10-6 lead but Goromaru ran in a try and added the extras to give the hosts a 13-10 lead midway through the second half. Canada then leveled on Pritchards second penalty but Goromaru sealed the win with his third penalty in the 32nd minute. Canada dropped to 3-1 while Japan improved to 1-2 in the five-nation tournament. With 292 total career points, Goromaru became Japans fifth highest point scorer, overtaking Hirotoki Onozawa. Keiji Hirose holds the Japanese record for the most points with 413. Japan has now won 12 of 22 matches against Canada. Fiji beat the United States 35-10 in the first game of Wednesdays doubleheader. Fiji improved to 2-1 while the United States remains winless. The tournament concludes on Sunday in Tokyo with Fiji playing Tonga and Japan facing the United States.

Alain Vigneault is the next head coach of the New York Rangers, according to Bob McKenzie of TSN, and fans can expect big changes. The 52-yearold coach previously stood behind the bench for the Montreal Canadiens and the Vancouver Canucks, and in New York, Vigneault will look to lead the Rangers to a Stanley Cup. Beat writer Andrew Gross tweeted that the Rangers haven't confirmed it yet, but there is a deal in principle for Vigneault to join the team. The 2013-14 Season will be the 20thanniversaryof the Rangers' 1994 Stanley Cup season, and fans hope that this will be the year that the Stanley Cup returns to Madison Square Garden. With Vigneault behind the bench, there are bound to be some changes, and here are the biggest ones that will take effect very soon. 1. Power-Play Philosophy John Tortorella was upfront about not coaching the power play, and that will change under Vigneault. Whether it is run by Vigneault directly or through an assistant he hires, the Rangers' powerplay philosophy will change. During Vigneault's time with the Canucks, the team had a lethal power play. The Rangers have numerous weapons that should thrive on the power play, and under Vigneault, they will be utilized properly.

Alain Vigneault To Rangers: Biggest Changes New Coach Will Make In New York

His style of attack should translate to success on the power play, and that is something the Rangers sorely need. 2.DefensemenJoining The Rush

(Moore is a great skater with a hard shot. One of the Rangers' biggest strengths is the mobility of their blue line. John Moore, Ryan McDonaghand Michael Del Zotto are extraordinary skaters who have offensive instincts, and under Vigneault, they will join the rush more often. John Tortorella tried to integrate the Rangers defense into offensive attacks, but he was never consistent with that approach. Vigneault would often use Alexander Edler as an attacker while coaching the Canucks, and with the Rangers he will utilize the team's mobiledefensemen. The Rangers have a young blue line with immense talent. If McDonagh, Moore and Del Zotto are given more free reign to play an offensive game, the team's offense as a whole can improve. 3. The Roster The biggest change under Vigneault will be the roster. The current roster features players such as Brian Boyle,

TaylorPyattandRyaneClowe, who are big forwards who play a gritty game. While Vigneault likes having those players as complimentary forwards, he is a coach who likes to attack. He had theSedinsand RyanKeslerin Vancouver and in New York, he has

Rick Nash. For Vigneault to make the most of his time with the Rangers, he is going to need more skill in his lineup. Don't be surprised if GM Glen Sather makes some bold moves this summer. This isn't going to be a team that blocks a ton of shots or plays primarily twoway hockey, and there could be some balance-related changes to their roster. Before adding Rick Nash, the team needed more skill; as a result of adding him, they sacrificed depth. Now the team needs to balance out the roster, and Vigneault will likely have some input on how the roster is built. Right now, Vigneault has just been hired and there is bound to be a ton of speculation on what could happen during his time in New York. The above changes are not guaranteed, but there is a good chance they will happen. Based on Vigneault's history and experience, he is a great fit to coach the Rangers. Now that the Rangers have a head coach, it will be interesting to see what direction the team goes in this summer. The Rangers are not that far off from contending for a Stanley Cup, and maybe a coaching change will prove to be what the team needed to become successful.
