BLENDING SYSTEMS FOR THE MARKETING OF REFINED PETROLEUM PRODUCTS

The introduction of biofuels into the mainstream fuels market business has generated the need for a significant investment in the appropriate technology and processes to ensure that the product reaching the end consumer is of the right quality and can be produced repeatedly without the need for additional quality controls. FMC Technologies blending system modules are based on the experience and quality of the Smith Meter brand. These modules, created for the International Markets including the European Market, have been designed to fulfill internal and logistical requirements and to comply with all Weights & Measures requirements. Of all available blending methods, ratio blending has become the industries main blending method because of the most constant blend quality even at interrupted operations.

BENEFITS
Each standard skid supports up to four 2" blend streams; more streams are optional The standard blend rates are 2% to 25% at a typical loading of 2,400 L/min Pre-configured and pretested at the factory Minimum footprint is suitable for new and upgrade installations Support for Ratio Blending, Side Stream Blending and Wild Stream Blending Options for individual configurations Full factory flow and functionality testing providing fault-free start up Comes with all approvals and certificates ISO certified production

Ratio Blending
Ratio blending refers to the mixing of the main fuel stream and the bio component stream in the correct ratio, where the main fuel stream is considered a variable flow and the bio component flow must be controlled in the correct ratio. Typically the term ratio blending is used where the biostream is mixed with the main fuel stream downstream of the main fuel meter and managed with one electronic controller device managing all flow control valves. With this blending method the blending stream is considered as part of custody transfer metering. The main advantage for ratio stream blending is that all final product components are individually and accurately measured, thus enabling correct inventory reconciliation providing the most accurate final custody transfer volume information. A typical application is Ethanol blending.

Wild Stream Blending

If the blending component stream is separately controlled from the main fuel stream, then it is often called wild stream blending, where the main fuel flow stream is the wild stream (uncontrolled stream) and the blend component is controlled as a percentage of the main stream and blended typically upstream (alternatively downstream) of the main stream flowmeter. Side Stream Blending

Side stream blending is an alternative term for ratio blending, but where the blend stream is mixed with the main fuel upstream of the main fuel meter. The blend meter is managed by the main stream electronic controller device. To ensure the accuracy of the blend, this blending method has blend stream accuracy requirements which are equivalent to the premium level of the main stream custody transfer metering. The main advantage for side stream blending is that typically the side stream is legally not considered as custody transfer. A typical application is biodiesel blending.
