21st June 2013 Dear Parent/Caregiver, The Justice Project Macarthur in conjunction with Mount Annan High School

are offering an exciting opportunity to be involved in the Refugee Challenge to be held in A block of Mt Annan High School on Thursday 18th, Friday 19th and Saturday 20th July 2013. The Refugee Challenge is a unique learning experience designed for students from Years 10, 11 and 12 and any adults. It introduces them to the world of a refugee by means of a simulation that takes them through situations that refugees encounter. The simulation runs for approximately 90minutes. It begins with an audiovisual presentation and then a series of staged experiences that replicate the journey of a refugee including arriving by boat after a long arduous journey from their homeland and being processed by immigration officials at a detention centre. Finally participants will engage in a debriefing and talk about their experience and what they have learned. Suitable trained adults will be running the debriefing and be available throughout the simulation if any support is required. The purpose of the Refugee Challenge is to teach participants about the plight of the 43.3 million people in the world who have become refugees. It aims to bring alive, under controlled conditions, the dilemma faced by the millions of refugees. The simulation will be a powerful and enlightening experience. Actors play the roles of officials in the simulation and guide and control the experience. There is at all times suitably trained adults on hand to ensure that everyone is safe. There will be four productions, 7pm Thursday 18th, 7pm Friday 19th, 11:30am and 2pm Saturday 20th July 2013. There is no cost, however bookings are essential.
