Nelson RCMP
Nelson RCMP are warning the
public about a telephone fraud
scam that has victimized at least
two elderly local residents over
the past two weeks totaling $4000.
Te scam starts by receiving a
telephone call from a person who
claims to be a distant relative that
is currently in jail urgently requir-
ing money to be wired within
the hour to his lawyer to get out
of jail(usually for the amount of
$2000). A second person will join
the conversation claiming to be the
distant relatives lawyer, at that
point, the lawyer will provide
his/her name and provide instruc-
tions as to how to send the money
via an electronic money transfer
and that you will be re-imbursed
the money in days to follow once
the relative is out of jail. As part
of the instructions, you are told
to call a telephone number to ad-
vise them once you have sent the
money. Lastly, the lawyer will
be insistent that you do not tell
anyone (especially Police) about
the incident, the request, and the
sending of the money.
Nelson RCMP want to remind
the public not to act on ANY re-
quest or to share ANY personal
information with person(s) and
or business(es) who have not
provided you with the suf cient
documentation to satisfy their
identity and credibility.

to the Conservation Of cers so far this year concerning
coyotes in the city of Nelson.
On another note ... the local cherries are almost ripe and
soon there will be cherries rotting on the ground. It is a
familiar message: pick your fruit so that you do not attract
bears to the neighbourhood. Bears love fruit and will come
close to homes to gain access to any fruit we make available
to them. But were you aware that other wildlife, including
coyotes, skunks, raccoons and deer feed on wind fall fruit?
Check out the remote camera videos of coyotes and bears
feeding on the cherries that have fallen to the road (on the
WildSafeBC Nelson Facebook page). Picking fruit and
not leaving it to rot on the ground is an important factor
in avoiding bringing bears, coyotes, deer, raccoons, skunks
and other wildlife too close to our homes.
It is illegal to allow wildlife access to garbage and other at-
tractants. Tere are now signifcant fnes for this ofence under
the Wildlife Act. Nelson also has a wildlife attractant bylaw
that regulates the presence of wildlife attractants in the city.

This week the Trail Regional SPCA is featuring a stray
by the name of Sarge. He is a dashing black and white
tuxedo short haired cat.
When Sarge was brought to our shelter in April he
was pretty roughed up. He had defnitely spent some
time defending himself out in the streets. His battle
wounds have since healed but his longing for a
forever home is very apparent. He loves to be around
people and will be your new best friend within the

Rescued Grizzly Cubs
Return to the Kootenays
Two male grizzly bear cubs named Blair and Terry, who
were orphaned in British Columbias Kootenays in the fall
of 2012, are on the road back to freedom. Te cubs were
orphaned in October when they were eight months old af-
ter their mother came into confict with humans and was
killed. Tey were rescued and raised in captivity and are
now ready to be released close to their home range.
Te bears have spent the last seven months at the North-
ern Lights Wildlife Society (NLWS -www.wildlifeshelter.
com) rehabilitation centre where they were raised in large
enclosures with very limited human contact until they were
old enough, strong enough and had the skills to be released
back to the wild. Tey will travel by road from Smithers to
an area outside of Castlegar inside individual culvert traps
on a fatbed truck. Each will be ftted with a satellite collar
and released on June 18, 2013 into a remote area away from
human activity and monitored for 18 months.
Te rescue, transport and release of the grizzlies is part of
a unique cooperative pilot project between the International
Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW - www.ifaw.org), the North-
ern Lights Wildlife Society (NLWS - www.wildlifeshetler.
com) and the British Columbia Ministries of Environment,
and Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.
Te project will study whether releasing orphaned griz-
zlies is viable. Tis is the fourth time such a release has
taken place. Two bears were released in July of 2008, two
in the summer of 2009 and four in the summer of 2011.
So far, eight grizzly cubs have been re-introduced to
the wild as part of this pilot project, said Angelika Langen
of NLWS. Its our hope that this work will help to save
even more grizzlies.Tracking the movements of the griz-
zlies using satellite collars is providing vital information
on the movements of the bears, said John Beecham, bear
specialist with IFAW. Its a key part of the project that
helps us to scientifcally validate whether what were do-
ing is working.
Human-bear confict is an ongoing concern in areas like
the Kootenays, and the reason why these two bears were
orphaned in the frst place. For tips on how to reduce hu-

Rehabilitating orphan bear cubs is viewed by IFAW as
a more sustainable and humane alternative than killing
the bears outright. Similar bear rehabilitation projects are
being supported by IFAW in Russia and India.

Theft Of Fishing Gear And Boat
On May 30, 2013 Kaslo RCMP responded to a theft at the
Woodbury Resort/Marina, at 4412 Highway 31 Ainsworth.
Sometime during the early morning hours of May 30, an
unknown suspect(s) entered several of the boats housed
at the Marina and stole approximately 40 high end shing
rods and reels, several tackle boxes as well as other shing
related equipment. A number of the items taken are reported
to be as a result of years of collecting pieces of shing gear
and is estimated to be valued in excess of $40,000.
The unknown suspect(s) piled all the shing gear and
related equipment into a boat parked at the Marina, then
stole the boat and used it as a get away vessel. The stolen
boat was recovered approximately 2km from Woodbury
Resort/Marina.
Kaslo RCMP is requesting the public assistance for infor-
mation surrounding the thefts, or assistance leading to the

Kaslos First GuitarFest
The 1st annual Kaslo GuitarFest will take place at the
Langham Cultural Centre from Monday, August 5 to Sat-
urday, August 10. This is an opportunity for classical gui-
tar students at all levels to work with Canadas premier
guitarist Daniel Bolshoy in master classes and private
lessons. Nelson guitarist Rita Deane will offer workshops
on ngerboard geography, tremolo, rasqueado and sight
reading. Kaslos David Stewart will lead a guitar orches-
tra and small ensembles. Classes will be held daily from 9
am until 4:30 pm and there will also be opportunities for
drop-in participants.
Daniel Bolshoy is head of the guitar department at the
University of British Columbia and is also building a gui-
tar program at the VSO school of music. We are delighted
to welcome him back to Kaslo where he has performed
several times in recital.
A public concert by Daniel Bolshoy on Wednesday, Au-
gust 7 and a wrap-up concert on August 10 by GuitarFest
participants will do much to attract interest in classical
guitar performance and enhance opportunities for the par-
ticipants. We are condent that students will gain con-
dence, new techniques, and musical prociency by way
of concentrated instruction and practice during the week.

CBTs Business Program
Expands Services
In an efort to meet the growing needs of local business-
es and help them succeed, Columbia Basin Trust (CBT)
is expanding its popular Basin Business Advisors (BBA)
program, which will be delivered by Community Futures.
Since 2000, the BBA program has been helping build
economic capacity in Basin communities by supporting
businesses to grow and prosper, said Neil Muth, CBT
President and CEO. By expanding the program, more
businesses and entrepreneurs will be able to beneft, ul-
timately having an impact on the economic well-being of
the Basin.
BBA supports small and medium-sized businesses
in the Basin by providing free, one-to-one, confdential
business counselling and assessment services, and by ar-
ranging and cost-sharing specialized consulting services.
Tese services will now be available to all business mod-
els, including social enterprises. Starting in the fall, there
will also be new services added such as pre-start-up entre-
preneurship, workshops and education.
Steele ONeil and Associates has delivered the program
since its inception in 2000, with owner Barbara ONeil
now heading into retirement.
We thank Barbara and business advisors Deanne Mon-
roe and Will Nixon of Steele ONeil and Associates for
their commitment to excellence in delivering this innova-
tive program that we are particularly proud of, said Muth.
Teyve made a real diference to hundreds of businesses
that have accessed the program over the years and that
continue to thrive today.
Muth added that CBT is pleased to welcome Community
Futures on board and looks forward to working with them
as they expand service levels to the business community.
Community Futures is committed to helping people
in the Basin who are currently operating or planning to
start their own business, and the opportunity to deliv-
er the BBA program will enhance our ability to provide
comprehensive business services, said Andrea Wilkey,
Community Futures Central Kootenay General Manager.

ensure the BBA program is visible and accessible and of-

Slocan Lake Dance Camp
Once again, New Denver welcomes dancers from
around the region for the annual Slocan Lake Dance
Camp. Set for Tursday, July 25 through Sunday, July 28,

Te Dance Camp now in its ninth year ofers thirty-one
day time workshops, two evening classes and three evening
dances. Dancers can choose only one or two workshops or
attend all four days. Workshops are ofered in most trad-
itional styles such as East coast swing, cha cha and waltz
along with country-two step and Argentine tango.
So whether you are brand new to dance or a seasoned
dancer, there is something for you. Sharon Sebo of Tango
Kelowna will return this year along with Michael Wiebe
of Calgary, Randy Tapp of Cranbrook and Lyle Clarke of
Edmonton. Each brings their unique talents.
At the Friday night polka dot party and the Saturday
dine and dance, several of the instructors will dance for
our entertainment. Mixers, prizes and special refresh-
ments will add to the fun.
