RAILROADS
Railroads
were
f irst
built
in
M ichigan
in
1830,
before
it
even
became
a
state!
Railroads
helped
build
up
t he
population
and
improved
commercial
and
industrial
g rowth.
The
two
major
railroads
before
the
1900s
in
M ichigan
were
the
Michigan
C entral
Railroad
and
the
New
York
Central
Railroad.
Now
f or
commuting
we
have
Amtrack,
but
most
railroads
today
are
used
for
freight.
These
are
the
Canadian
N ational
Railway,
t he
Canadian
Pacific
Railway,
C SX
T ransportation,
and
Norfolk
Southern
Railway.

is
Michigans
largest
natural
freshwater
spring.
The
name
means
big
cold
water.
L ocated
near
Manistique
in
the
Upper
Peninsula,
it
has
a
beautiful
emerald
appearance
and
constantly
has
water
running
into
it
from
an
aquifer
under
t he
ground.
The
lake
stays
at
around
45F.
Lewis
Cass
Born
in
1782,
L ewis
Cass
was
the
governor
of
Michigan
when
it
was
still
a
territory.
He
did
a
great
deal
to
make
sure
that
Michigan
would
become
a
state.
Later
he
became
a
US
senator
for
the
state
o f
Michigan.
Under
President
Buchanan
he
was
the
Secretary
o f
State.
In
the
US
capitol
there
are
two
statues
from
every
state.

Cass
is
one
of
the
two
statues
for
Michigan.
