Do It Yourself Compaction Test

in two minutes with the Light Weight Deflectometer
It is hard to imagine road construction sites in Germany without the use of Light Weight Deflectometers. Every day thousands of civil engineering companies count on the advantages of this handy and precise Do It Yourself Compaction Test. Within two minutes you can determine the quality of compaction, even in areas that are difficult to access, like utility trenches and backfills. Thus, the site manager can take quick decisions, in order to conduct compaction work cost-effectively and profitably, while ensuring top construction quality.

Accredited Compaction Test

according to ASTM E2835-11
Quotation from ASTM E2835-11: Deflections may be either correlated directly to pavement performance or used to determine in-situ material characteristics of the pavement foundation layers. Some uses of the data include quality control and quality assurance of compacted layers, and for structural evaluation of load carrying capacity.

TERRATEST 3000

GPS

is produced in highly

modern CNC-based production centers in Germany, of course. Its material and the high-quality manufacture make the device largely resistant against environmental impact on the construction site.

TERRATEST calibrates Light Weight Deflectometers with the calibration system CS 01, developed and constructed by TERRATEST and accredited by the German Federal Road Research Institute (BASt). That means short reaction times between production, calibration, service and dispatch.

For more than 15 years I have been working with Light Weight Deflectometers. All my know-how manifests itself in TERRATEST 3000 GPS, a sophisticated concept suitable for daily use on construction sites, Frank G. Schulz, general manager of TERRATEST GmbH, Berlin.

Intuitive Menu Guidance

for quick, uncomplicated compaction tests
The operation of TERRATEST 3000
GPS

is intuitive and extremely user-friendly. During development and con-

struction we paid attention to faulty measurements and made them practically impossible through an internal plausibilty check. This ensures that one can perform precise tests and easily operate the device in a professional manner. The well-arranged control panel of the electronic system makes testing on construction sites with TERRATEST 3000
GPS

effective, quick und inexpensive.

The sequence of the measuring process below shows the userfriendly execution of the test, which can be printed

immediately on the construction site, thanks to the integrated mini-printer. At the same time the measured data is saved on a chip card for later management on your PC. Like that, you can transfer all data to your PC in no time and start the evaluation process.

When switching on the device, TERRATEST 3000

By pressing the start button again, one is automatically directed to the measuring menu and will be asked to start with a first pre-load.

After each measurement, the display shows the settlement in mm as well as the corresponding settlement curve.

After the third measurement Evd-value (dynamic deflection module) as well as s/v value (relation between settlement and settlement speed) will be displayed.

automati-

cally checks the sensor connection, battery charge as well as proper functioning of GPS and chip card and shows their status on the display.

Complete Equipment
Printer Chip Card for Test Saving GPS System Software
To be able to document testing results directly at the construction site, the integrated mini-printer allows you to print the measured data immediately and on the spot. Additionally to the Evd-value, the three settlement curves, the maximum settlements with the settlement speed as well as the GPS coordinates will be shown. Later, every test can be printed as an A4-sized record from your PC.

For saving important additional information regarding the construction site, like altitude or type of soil, the device is also equipped with a text input function. Thanks to this text input function, handwritten notes and sketches belong to the past.

Well-arranged front plate, intuitive menu guidance: it is impossible to make the operation of the Light Weight Deflectometer easier. The protocol print-out shows GPS coordinates, end result, settlement curves as well as the three individual settlements.

All tests are saved automatically on a chip card, simply insert the card and the data can be transferred to the PC immediately. And so that the card doesnt get lost on the construction site, we have willfully chosen a chip card in the size of a credit card.

User-friendly Software
with integrated Google Earth Interface
While testing, the TERRATEST-GPS-System determines and saves the coordinates of the particular testing point (when GPS is turned on). At the touch of a button the measurement can later be shown on your PC in a Google Earth satellite picture with the measured value, date and time. The GPS coordinates will automatically be converted in Gauss-Krger coordinates, so that measurements can also be directly uploaded to CAD-plans. Thus, individual tests can be accurately allocated to particular locations.

The analysis of the testing results can easily be performed with the TERRATEST software. You can create individual data records as well as a statistical analysis of the entire testing area as specified in ASTM E2835-11.

In this way all, testing results are analyzed and archived automatically and necessary selfmonitoring is achieved.

Any commercial use of Google Earth involves costs. However, since our software is already linked to Google Earth, there is no need to install Google Earth on your PC. TERRATEST has concluded a contract of use with Google, therefore you dont need to pay the fees for commercial use of Google Earth.
Included in the set is our absolutely user-friendly software TERRATEST. Every test is shown in an individual A4-sized data record.

Static plate load test with load testing vehicle, time and money consuming

According to German Standards

Recognized benchmarks for compaction tests
Quotation from German standard ZTV E StB 2009 (Supplementary Technical Terms and Conditions of Contract and Guidelines for Earthwork in Road Construction): .... 4.5.2 Requirements for deflection modulus The requirements provided below are based on the 10% minimum quantile. When constructing r o a d s c o r r e s ponding to Construction Classes SV or I to IV on frost-free subsoil or substructure, it is necessary to obtain a deflection modulus of at least Ev2 = 120 MN/m2 or alternatively Evd = 65 MN/m2 for Construction Classes V and VI a deflection modulus of at least Ev2 = 100 MN/m2 or Evd = 50 MN/m2. The deflection modulus E v2 is to be verified through the static plate load test as defined in DIN 18134 and the deflection modulus Evd through the dynamic plate load test as defined in TP BF-StB Part B 8.3. Proposal for Correlation

of the static/dynamic plate load test
Static and dynamic plate load tests differ from each other especially in the load speed and the pressure exerted on the ground. Therefore, there is no constant correlation between the

After the first phase of compaction work has been completed, perform a static plate load test. Make sure that the loading vehicle leaves the area very carefully to avoid any ground disturbances. Afterwards, determine the water content of the backfill materials.

The dynamic plate load test with the Light Weight Deflectometer does not replace your domestic test method as defined in local standards!

Then, in a circle around this first testing point, carry out eight dynamic plate load tests, four 30cm and four 60cm away from the first testing point, each with a 45 degree distance to the next.

The entire procedure must be repeated at other points of the test area. The number of required test s e q u e n ces, to be performed in succession along the compaction line, depends on the size of the construction site. However, you must perform at least three test sequences at a distance of 20 meters from each other. If the water content at the different test points does not vary widely, compare the mean values of the measured Evd values with the mean values of the parameters obtained through the static test. Ignore the highest and lowest test results for the calculation of the mean Evd value. Consider only the four results which show parameters close to each other.

After having determined the correlation values in this way, you can perform all other tests with the Light Weight Deflectometer, as long as the foundation soil remains the same. The correlation procedure should be performed by contractor and client, so that they can collectively agree on using the Light Weight Deflectometer as their standard test method.

Brillant Testing without Carrying

CARRELLO - the mobile testing system
CARRELLO was designed for comfortable testing on the construction site. An application has been filed to register its design as an EU Community design. The apparatus enables easy handling of your TERRATEST 3000
GPS

without

having to carry it across the construction site. To do so, the complete m e c h a nism is hooked up under the angled handles of the load plate and hauled across the construction site. The guide rod of the loading device is locked and fixed. The measurement electronics remain connected to the load plate during the entire testing process and can be operated conveniently at waist level. Like that, your TERRATEST 3000
GPS

remains constantly

ready to use. For testing, the load plate will simply be placed on the ground without having to lift, carry and rewire the device for each test. After testing, the mechanism is hooked up under the angled handles of the load plate again and hauled comfortably to the next testing point. In this way, the Light Weight Deflectometer becomes a real light Weight Deflectometer. Its handling will be easy and comfortable, even across long distances.

During the entire testing procedure, the electronics remain conneted and attached to CARRELLO.
