CHERNOBYL EXPLOSION 1986

Prepare by: Tamarley Walters

CHERNOBYL HISTORY
On April 26, 1986 at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant a steam blew a reactor apart releasing radioactive gases. This cause a blaze for ten days in spite all the effort to put the blaze. Approximately 500,000 persons have to leave their homes due the radiation hazard from the plant that was not healthy for them.

IMPACT AREA OF CHERNOBYL

125,000 square miles of land in Belarus, Russia and

Ukraine were affected by this explosion. About 40% of the contaminated area was used for agriculture. Contamination of the soil by radio nucleotides with long half-lives such as cesium-137 is a particular problem for the local residents near the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor

VULNERABLE GROUPS

Three groups were greatly affected by the Chernobyl explosion: Evacuees liquidators those who continued to live in contaminated areas

HEALTH PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED

Leukaemia Throat cancer Miscarriages in female Cancer Respiratory Illnesses Blood Vascular System Urogenital and Reproductive System

RISK ASSESSMENT
Studies of cancer risk following explosion. Studies of leukaemia and haematological

diseases in recovery workers. Implication of contamination level. Neurological and psychological effects. Medical lessons learnt. Demographic losses of population

RISK MANAGEMENT USED

Communicating risk across the project

collection Understanding risk contingency and organisation fall-back The right to reply Managing risk in Oil and Gas Industry Risk and earned value - working together in your project

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

IAEA created International Chernobyl Project, which oversaw a visit to the affected areas and made a comprehensive report on radiological consequences and protective measures

JAMAICA EXPLOSION
In September 2008 there was a bauxite

explosion at one of our major plants called ALPART. Luckily no one was injured. Residents complained of skin burning. It was stated in the observer that released bauxite dust and other chemicals into the air.

JAMAICA AGENCIES THAT CAN ASSIST WITH SUCH PROBLEM

Ministry of Science, Technology,

Energy and Mining Scientific Research Council National Environmental and Planning Agency (NEPA)

ACTS GOVERNING LOCAL MINING SECTOR

The Minerals (Vesting) Act The Mining Act The Quarries Control Act Regulations made under the Mining Act and

the Quarries Control Act.

CONCLUSION
The Chernobyl nuclear power plant

exploded in April 1986. this has impacted greatly on the countries affected by it. This has caused approximately 2000 persons to die and thousand has to vacate as this has cause health effects in adults, children and the environment.
