Anil’s Golden Globe nod

D anny Boyle’s much appreciated drama Anil Kapoor-starrer Slumdog Millionaire has been
nominated for Best Motion Picture (Drama) at the Golden Globe awards. The Golden
Globes are considered as a predecessor to the much more prestigious Academy awards, and
films which usually find a nomination at the Golden Globe more often than not make the final
cut at the Oscars.
Slumdog Millionaire, which has been making the rounds of film festivals for a while now, tells
the story of a slum boy who goes on to take part in a quiz game show. The film released in
the US recently and has received both critical and commercial success. Recently, the film also
won 3 top awards at the British Independent Film awards. With this prestigious Golden Globe
nomination, the makers now surely have their eyes set on the next big thing — an Oscar
nomination.

C handni Chowk To China, the first ever Bollywood
Kung-Fu comedy takes you on a madcap journey
from the by-lanes of Chandni Chowk in Delhi to
Shanghai, the Great Wall, and rural China, marrying in
its wake hilarious gags, breathtaking action, spectacular
locations, and heart-stirring emotions.
Our protagonist Sidhu (Akshay Kumar- Singh is
Kinng, Waqt) is the lowest on the totem pole, cutting
vegetables at a roadside food stall in Chandni Chowk,
Delhi. He longs to escape his dreary existence and looks
for shortcuts- with astrologers, tarot readers and fake
fakirs — believing in anything except himself, despite
his father figure Dada’s (Mithun Chakraborty — Lucky,
Heroes) best efforts. His redeeming moment arrives
when two strangers, claiming he’s a reincarnation of a
war hero from the past, take him to China for a life
of luxury. Sidhu now dreams of wine, women, and a
princely existence in foreign lands. Thanks to the devious
translator, a conman by the name Chopstick (Ranvir
Shorey- Ugly aur Pagli), little does he know that he is
being taken to the Promised Land to rid the Chinese
village of the vicious smuggler Hojo (Gordon Liu- Kill
Bill Vol. 2)!
Therefore, Sidhu blissfully sets forth to China with
Chopstick who instigates dreams of a delicious future
and conveniently forgets to reveal the perils that await
him. Along the way, he meets Sakhi (Deepika Padukone-
Om Shanti Om, Bachna Ae Haseeno), who has embarked
on a journey to pay homage to the land of her birth
and her dead father and twin. Initially Sidhu, through a
series of lucky coincidences, manages to sidestep being
beaten by Hojo’s men but finally Hojo catches up with
him and exposes him as the country buffoon that he
really is. Sidhu has the fire of revenge in his belly and
finds the one man who will make him a Kung-Fu expert
and set the village free. Armed with his Sifu (master),
faith in himself, and the love of the fair Sakhi, Sidhu
sets forth to conquer all!
The film was supposed to be titled Mera Naam Chin
Chin Choo or Made in China, but somehow ended up
with the more apt title it has now. Written by Sridhar
Raghavan of Khakee (2004) and Bluffmaster (2005)
fame, Chandni Chowk to China is somewhat like the
story of Akshay Kumar’s life. In fact, the star himself
agreed that about 50 percent of the film is based on his
own experiences.
For the first time, South Indian beauty Deepika
Padukone will be essaying a double role: as a Chinese
Woman and an Indian Woman. Chinese superstar
Gordon Liu is making his Bollywood debut in this movie
and promises loads of Kung-Fu action!
That makes it all the more watchable for Akki’s fans.

BOLLYWOOD nightlife by Ali Fazal

C osmopolitan India recently held its annual ‘Fun Fearless Female’ Awards for 2008. As the year comes to a close, countless Bollywood starlets
showed up, proud to display their fun and fearlessness.The coveted award, cleverly shaped like a stiletto heeled shoe, is given to the women
who spoke their mind and made a difference that year. Interestingly, this year awards were given to several men as well, who promoted the
image of a ‘strong, sexy woman’ in their own way. Many other Bollywood VIPs were in attendance, including Shahrukh Khan, who also emceed
the event.

Clockwise from top left:

Shahrukh Khan accepting his award;
Koel Purie on the ‘pink’ carpet;
Farah Khan, director/ choreographer
accepting her award;
Bipasha Basu posing with her award;
Saniya Mirza, teen tennis sensation, with her
award;
Sushmita Sen posing as she exits;
Milind Soman and Rahul Dev greeting the
press;
Ronit Roy and Rohit Roy joking around on
the ‘pink’ carpet;
Ranbir Kapoor exiting with his award.
