ABOUT MILES Made in the Lower East Side (miLES) : A multi-disciplinary innovation start-up that creates multi-use storefronts as community hubs Started as an online collaboration in February 2012, miLES recognizes the urgency of the problem of vacancy in neighborhoods, the importance of utilizing untapped spaces and resources, and the need of an innovative cross-disciplinary practice to create a sustaining process to engage communities and stakeholders. We want to further enhance and channel the creative, entrepreneurial and community spirit of the Lower East Side into underused spaces. A previously vacant storefront turned into a community hub for co-working, meeting, events and pop-up shops miLES opens underused storefronts to new possibilities, with multi-use short-term pop-ups including co-working, classes, events and shops. Think of us as the Airbnb or Zipcar for storefronts.

OUR TARGET AUDIENCE Made in the Lower East Side (miLES) : We create value across multiple stakeholders We work with residents, artists, businesses and landlords in the Lower East Side to identify, program and fill underused spaces and turn them into vibrant community hubs for working, learning, connecting and starting up new projects. For residents: we listen to your ideas and help tell your stories. We offer new possibilities for underused spaces in your neighborhood. We bring new stories and vibrancy to the neighborhood. For storefront owners and tenants: we fill your space in a way that helps highlight the spaces and potentially helps you rent them out in short term basis. We do the vetting of the programming to save you the effort, and bring you the appropriate extra foot traffic that you desire. For people with ideas: We make it easy for you to display and prototype your entrepreneurial, creative, educational or civic ideas in a public space. We match you up with storefronts. By aggregating different pop up interventions, we create a common brand and marketing that helps promote all events and interventions associated with miLES.

There are still over 200 vacant storefronts and lots in the neighborhood, waiting for ideas, ripe for activiation. miLES offer a temporary home for emerging projects, and provide inclusive economic opportunities for the neighborhood.
