Issue 9 26th June 2013

Dear Parents, SPEEDMARK EVENT As part of National Sports Week next week, the children will be enjoying opportunities this week getting them involved with physical activity. Please can we ask that all children come prepared with their sports kit each day of the week. One major event will be SPEEDMARK. This is a large inflatable goal which measures the speed of a shot taken at the goal. Each class will have a competition to decide on the fastest shot. We would also like to ask all children to obtain sponsors for this event as there are great prizes to be won by SPEEDMARK for each individual amount raised. Children that are able to raise 20 upwards win differing types of footballs, football bags and packs of goodies. Children that raise 50 obtain a full set of goodies which includes two different types of training ball. All monies raised will be dedicated to improving the sports equipment within our school to make a real difference and helping our children to enjoy physical activity. This has been a very popular event in the past which can raise great levels of funding if all children get involved. Many thanks for your support! LIFE EDUCATION BUS 4

JULY URGENT REMINDER OF 2 CONTRIBUTION

We would like to remind you of the Life Bus which is coming to our school next week and ask each family for a 2 contribution if you have not already paid. This is a fantastic experience as all expensive things are! The children will find this useful, interesting and memorable and with your help we can ask them to come each year and deliver a programme of teaching which changes for each age group. SCHOOL WEBSITE AND APP You may have noticed changes on our school website over the last few weeks, and the content within the website is growing each week. We also have developed a new app which allows all of our parents and interested members of the community to follow the schools news and the childrens work within their classes through regular blogging. The schools term dates, policies and photography are also other features of this useful app. It is available to both android and Iphone devices. I would appreciate all parents downloading this app if they can through searching for WLDPS. NEW CLASSES Children will have been informed yesterday by bringing home a letter yesterday. They will be first meeting on rd Thursday 27th June and a second opportunity to meet them on 3 July at 1.45pm SCHOOL UNIFORM A quick reminder to you all to order any school uniform you need now for September to ensure we can get this to you in time! As of 1 October 2013 the school will no longer be selling uniform. This will be passed on to Bamber Bridge Sports which is located at Bamber Bridge Football Club. This will be the schools only provider. The shop will be open from 11am 5pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday, although your demand may result in these hours being extended if necessary. You will still be able to purchase uniform from school until this handover. Jerseys bought in October will be slightly different as they will have a V-neck collar, rather than a round collar. I would like to say that this is a minor change but a really smart one. The usual polo shirts can be worn under these V-neck jerseys as normal. CLOTHING BANK In the next few weeks we will have a clothing bank delivered for our school site by the path towards the infant entrance. This will be emptied regularly and school will receive money back for the weight you donate. You will be able to donate many things such as adult/childrens clothing, shoes, belts, handbags and soft toys. These will be donated to third world countries to re-use and benefit us greatly. This is also another step towards helping our children understand the huge benefits of recycling. HEADLICE! We are being invaded by head lice and parents are understandably frustrated when their children collect and bring them home. I would be incredibly grateful if you would all be extremely vigilant and check your childs hair in an attempt to eradicate them from our school community. I have found Hedrin to be a popular and successful treatment which can be obtained free of charge from any pharmacy using the minor ailments system. Usually, this involves one treatment, and then another a week later to ensure that all eggs are completely removed. I am afraid that there is no magic solution to this problem apart from regular checking and quick treatment when found. I have contacted the school nurse for further guidance for parents to help with this matter and it will be circulated to you as soon as possible. MEDICINE IN SCHOOL TIME If your child needs medicine within school time and it is prescribed by your doctor, you will be required to fill out a form which is available from the school office. We would like to remind you not to send your child in with the medicine, but to bring it to the office yourself. We are not allowed to give out any medicine that is not prescribed by your doctor; however you are welcome to come in during school time to administer this to your child. PTA EVENT PITCH & PLAY 29

JULY 3.10

We are inviting all parents, grandparents and children to get baking in order to have a royal celebration for the birth of the new baby of Prince William and Princess Catherine. We have been talking about this event in school during assemblies and the children have been asked to think about baking for this event with your support. We would love to th have as many children as possible bringing cakes of all shapes and sizes in names tubs and tins on the Thursday 18 after school or on Friday morning. The event shall take place at the end of the school day on the junior playground. We would like as many parents, grandparents and children to join us to buy a cake or two and enjoy this event together. Tables will be set out to eat on the playground or they can be bought to take home to enjoy. We would also like to invite children to come dressed in red white and blue for the donation of 1 which will go towards boosting PTA funds. They have recently made some fantastic purchases such as the light and sound equipment and staging in the junior hall for forthcoming performances.

ROYAL BAKE OFF BUNTING On Friday 5 July at the end of school from 3.00 the PTA will be selling canvas blank bunting for 50p and they are inviting all children to decorate a triangular pennant which will be strung together to form our own special bunting for the Royal Bake Off. The pennants will be available for sale at the main gates at the entrance of the school. Winners will be chosen of the children who produce the smartest and most creative designs and prizes will be awarded by the th PTA at the event on Friday 19 . QUESTIONNAIRE Attached to this newsletter I would be very grateful if parents could complete a questionnaire that will help to inform the school of parent views which can be used to improve the school in the future. Parents are welcome to return these forms to the school office and may be places in an envelope if you wish. I will be most grateful if these can be th completed and returned by Friday 5 July. This really is the most helpful method of communicating with the school to ensure it continues to make improvement. STRIKE ACTION I am pleased to inform you that school will operate as normal on the proposed strike day (27 June). This is owing to the fact that a very minor level of action is being taken by members of the teaching staff body. ROTAKIDS DEVELOPING LINKS WITH SOUTH RIBBLE DISTRICT A small number of year 3 children will be attending the RotaKids Conference at Lancaster University on Friday 28 June. I would like to propose that the school links with a well established rotary district of South Ribble as they are keen to work with schools also. Next year all Year 4 children in September will be invited to become RotaKids and lead projects which will benefit less advantaged communities in Swaziland Africa. It is very difficult to makes links with schools in other countries, however the Rotary Club have fantastic links already established with a number of school in this region of Africa some of which are orphanages. This will then be continued the year after by asking the next Year 4 to be out next RotaKids.
