On My Placemat
Introduction:
Teacher will:

11

Hand out place value mats with digit cards to individual students or pairs of students. H Provide students with some blocks-of-10 and some single blocks. H Direct students to organize the blocks on their mats. (Students will need to learn how to place the different-sized blocks according to place value.)
H

Activity:
Students will:

Use the digit cards to show the quantity of blocks on their place value mat. Name the quantity by describing the blocks on their mats and by describing the total number (i.e. 2 blocks-of-10 and 3 single blocks and 23 total blocks). H Use the recording sheet to show the quantity of blocks. H Write the digits and use stamps or markers to show the amount.
H H

Whole Class Discussion:

Teacher will:

Conduct a discussion with the class about the process that they used to place the blocks on their place value mats in the appropriate columns. H Show a number on the mat (i.e., 2 blocks-of-10 and 3 single blocks). Ask, If I unpack all these blocks and count them, how many single blocks will be inside? (Note - Many students may not know.) Unpack and count all the single blocks altogether (one, two,twenty-three). Lay the blocks on the number line and show the number symbol where the blocks end (23).
H

Assessment:
Are the students able to put the blocks in the appropriate places on the place value mat? H Are students able to name the quantity of blocks on their mat both as a total number and as the number of each size block? H Are students able to use the digit cards to accurately represent the quantities? H Are students able to accurately represent the quantity of blocks on their mats using the stamps or the markers?
H

Extension Ideas:
Have students put some blocks-of-10 and some single blocks on their mats and set the digit cards to show the total number. Have students unpack all the blocks on their mat and place them on a number line to see that they end at the same total number. H Students may also sort and organize with blocks-of-100, blocks-of-10, and single blocks. From very early on students can sort into three places and use a digit card to show how many of each size block they have. A second activity sheet is provided for this extension idea.
