Over 200 New Amphibians Found in Madagascar
Highlighting a "vast underestimation” of Madagascar's natural riches, up to 221 new species
of amphibians have been found on the island country, including the frog Boophis ulftunni,
pictured. The find nearly doubles the number of known amphibians in Madagascar, a new
study says.

First Sea Trials for Deep Ocean

Deep Blue Lakes Become Afghanistan's First Park
A cascading collection of deep-blue high-mountain lakes became Afghanistan's first
provisional national park Wednesday, as the violence-plagued nation took a big first
step toward protecting one of its finest natural treasures.
Coinciding with Earth Day, celebrated worldwide every year on April 22, officials in the
Central Asian country signed a decree to create Band-e-Amir National Park,
encompassing six mountain-fed lakes held back by natural calcified dams.

Rainforest Fluffballs

The Honduran White Bat! According to Wikipedia, Honduran White Bats have snow-white fur and a yellow nose and
ears. These bats are tiny, only 37-47 mm long. They live in leaf tents in the rainforest, natch.

2009 Audubon Magazine Photography

Awards:
Birds in Focus, created to celebrate the beauty and diversity
of birdlife through the art of photography, and to honor the
exceptional work of talented professional, amateur and youth
photographers from all over the U.S.

Audubon will be accepting submissions online between May

15-July 15 in three categories: Professional, Amateur, and
Youth. Photographers are encouraged to reveal a new angle
or perspective in their work. “Think creatively,” advises
Audubon’s design director Kevin Fisher, one of the judges.
“Originality and drama rank high at Audubon. Include tight
shots, such as close-ups of eyes, feathers. We welcome
uncommon perspectives.”
