Santa can you hear me I signed my letter that I sealed with a kiss I sent it off It just said this I know exactly what I want this year. Santa can you hear me. I want my baby (baby, yeah) I want someone to love me someone to hold me. Maybe (maybe, maybe maybe.) he'll be all I hope in a big red bow Santa can you hear me? Santa thats my only wish this year. oohhh ohh yeah Christmas Eve I just can't sleep Would I be wrong for taking a peek? Cause I heard that your coming to town Santa can you hear me? This is a board game to practice the past tense of the different verbs used in the lyrics. You move around the board according to the number you get on the dice. The number of the dice will also tell you the person you need to conjugate the verbs with. Example: (I get 6 on the dice. So I make a sentence using (holding & You): Couples holding hands/ then I get 5 on the dice So I make a sentence using (sealed & They): I signed my letter that I sealed with a kiss.

------------------------------Teachers Notes :
You can use this board with different verbs and nouns as you need for your different classes and with different songs, it can be applied for adjectives prepositions or whatever you want the students to practice. To modify the board Xerox and cut up then write a document with the words you need to practice with font Ravie (size 16). You can also put white dough, and write with your own hand the new words. The purpose of the activity is to put these words in context . Students can practice one specific tense or all the ones they already know. In this chart the verbs are written as they appear on the lyrics. So some are in past, others in gerund, or base form.
------------------------------The sentences may vary but these are some examples of what the students can say depending on your instructions
If the student gets one on the dice at the start point he/she has to make a sentence with come and I: Please make my wish come true / Santa will make my wish come true / Santa didnt come . (depending on the tense you want them to practice of the tenses they already know). If the student gets two after the previous point he/she has to use you and sleep: I just cant sleep/ I wont be able to sleep/ can you sleep? (as you can see students will have to make sentences that make sense with the words they are using ). If the student gets three after sleep he/she has to use holding and he/she or it/: couples holding hands / Were you holding hands? / Santa will be holding everyones presents ( you can also ask them to use affirmative or interrogative for that you can add on the chart cards with (+ for affirmative) (- for negative) and (? for interrogative)

NSYNC
Outside the winter seems so cold (so cold, sing it baby) Your heart is frozen like a storm (frozen like a storm yeah And I had only one wish on my list, oh like a storm) For me you would be the perfect gift, oh yeah And there's no one home (no one home) to keep you safe and There's nothing colder than an empty home, oh no warm (to keep you safe and warm) (empty home) You don't have to be alone And holidays were never meant to be alone, oh (to be alone) Your eyes are red because you've cried (you've cried) The smiles we gave when our hearts were safe You fell asleep by the fireside (by the fireside) By each other's love and warmth But there's one thing you should know That's subsided now with happiness around (one thing you should know) If I can only find the way to your heart On this Christmas baby, you don't have to be. Alone. Yeah
Shouldnt should
Dont /doesnt
Now write a suitable piece of advice for each of these problems described in the song.

------------------------------------------------------------Pedagogic Notes :
This song can be perfect for conversation. Students can practice modals in general and family issues. Students can also practice expressions like : I agree/ to my mind/ I dont think so/ so do I/ I dont either/ I do too/ neither do I. You can play a Christmas movie for the students to get the feeling of Christmas and family, and see how family conflicts are a shadow for happiness in Christmas.
Students get the input through the song. They get a situation, some vocabulary and grammar. Make sure they understand the lyrics. You can get the class in teams to do reading comprehension and get the main idea of the lyrics. You can ask some comprehension questions to check students understanding. If they dont understand important facts then get them work in groups with the dictionary to get the main ideas described. Once they understand very well the lyrics you can play it then give the hand out for them to use the grammar point. Finally they can either write a paragraph ; if they are in basic level or have a conversation if they are in intermediate or advanced levels. It is important to have a discussion with the whole class at the end using should/ need to/ have to / and if possible expressions of agreement or disagreement. For lower levels these can be as simple as me too, or me neither. Intermediate and advance level can use more complex expressions.

Follow up activity :
The words are taken from the song. Some are synonyms of the words used in the song. Once they complete the words, ask the students to identify them in the lyrics. Ask them the meaning of them. Ask them to try to identify the meaning by context. You can select other words from the song and give only the vowels ask them to write the consonants on the following blank chart provided for you to use. This time you can use six-letter words.
------------------------------Pedagogic Notes :
The words are taken from the song. This activity is ideal to make help students memorize vocabulary, check the spelling and identify the syllables per words. Students should work with the words in context to find out the meaning. If they cannot find it by context you can give the translation to Spanish, but after that it is important that they make sentences using the vocabulary or they read it again in the lyrics. Vocabulary should not be learnt in isolation. Words in context will help them think in English, and communicate ideas properly. Here they can also identify synonyms or antonyms of some of the words used in the song. At the end you are provided with a blank form for you to change the exercise according to the words you want them to practice. You can use this format with any song.

------------------------------Modals ( Necessity )
Must, have (got ) to, neednt, mustnt Necessity means that you cannot avoid doing something. You must buy a ticket = You cannot go without a ticket. Use the Negative forms of have (got ) to when there is no necessity. It is also possible to use neednt when there is no necessity. Ought to , should Use these modals when something is the right thing to do. There is little difference between ought to and should but ought to is sometimes a little stronger than should. In Something to Sing and Speak Part 3 you have exercises to practice the Modals of Certainty. Notice that adjectives and adverbs can often be used to paraphrase the logical uses but only rarely the social uses, of modals: Must Will Should May Could, might necessarily, very (certainly) fairly certain probable, probably, likely perhaps, maybe, quite possible possible, possibly High certainty
Low certainty

Pedagogic Notes :
------------------------------This activity enhances listening comprehension. For basic levels students can work in teams of 4 and for intermediate and advanced levels, students can work in pairs or individually. It will be necessary to play the song more than once. It is recommended to go over the vocabulary first and make sure students can pronounce and understand the words listed for the Bingo.
------------------------------Follow up activity :
------------------------------ You can do comprehension questions to make sure the students understand the lyrics. You can also ask the students to take a number of words from the bingo and write a composition with it. The composition can go with the topic or main idea of the song or can have a completely different theme. As long as the words are used coherently.

------------------------------Wonderful Christmas:
The purpose of the activity is to make students use the correct word order for adjective + enough and too + adjective and understand that they use too with a adjectives that have a negative implication : like too expensive, too ugly, too stupid. Using the adjectives plus enough and too is very appropriate to describe Wonderful Christmas time. Students have to identify the word in each pair that will be used with too and the other will be used with enough and the negative form in order to say the same thing: This present is too expensive / This present is not cheap enough

------------------------------This activity was designed to provide the students with extra vocabulary that can help them describe better their Christmas stories. The song serves as input and you have to emphasize the Holly Jolly Christmas expression to tell them how is Christmas described; how the adjectives give it a special touch. Once they listened to the song they work on the handout with the base and strong adjectives. Then you ask the students to write a composition about Christmas using the adjectives provided, and the following handout.
