Concept: Below are some of the most recent developments related to reproductive health in our society. Your job will be to provide an analysis of these developments. As we discussed in the beginning of the unit sex ed is a values driven topic. These issues are inherently controversial themselves because although there are facts that may help you understand them ultimately you see these facts through the prism of your own perception (values, morals, upbringing, etc.). The sources listed are just a starting point, remember that any information may be biased and it is your job as an educated consumer to carefully analyze information for validity, reliability, and bias. Goal: Provide an analysis of the recent developments in reproductive health demonstrating an understanding of content specific information necessary to understand each issue (ie. What strains are protected against in the HPV vaccine, approved locations for the Safe Haven law). Topic 1: The HPV Vaccine Debate

Basic Overview: HPV or Human Papillomavirus is a STI or sexually transmitted disease. The disease can cause cervical and other cancers and at the moment, researchers are trying to determine if vaccines are safe to be used.

Does this promote promiscuity or should we take advantage of something that could potentially help us? Even though it may promote promiscuity, it may be worth it for protection

It promotes people to not taking accountability for their choices because with the flip of a switch, they can release themselves from responsibilities and their mistakes which they no longer learn from. Level 5: How is this similar/different than the abortion pill (RU-486)? No. Emergency contraception works before pregnancy begins. It will not work if a woman is
already pregnant. Abortion takes place after a fertilized egg has attached to the uterus. The abortion pill (Mifeprex, also called RU-486) makes the uterus force out the egg, ending the pregnancy.

Basic Overview: Condoms allow people to have protected sex and they dont have to worry about impregnating their partner. There availability in stores is the subject of much debate.

There are set venues within schools where students can obtain condoms. for those who will do it anyway but it might promote sex. Everyone involved is notified
