Committee
Ordinance for abandoned

By NICK COHEN
The Tabernacle Sun
Children creating crafts, play-
ing in a pool or even having a
spontaneous dance party may
seem like typical summer camp
behavior. But for the kids of
Camp No Worries, it means so
much more.
It means a place where they
truly can be kids.
Camp No Worries, celebrating
its 19th year, is a summer camp
created solely for children with
cancer and their siblings.
The goal is to give these kids a
much-needed break from the
daily struggle of dealing with ill-
ness.
Kasey Massa, a Mt. Laurel res-
ident, founded the program when
she was just 19 years old while at-
tending West Virginia University.
Massa had been diagnosed with a
brain tumor at age 11.
I remember exactly how I felt
that summer, that I wouldnt get
to have a summer. I would be
going to doctors appointments
and losing my hair, things no
child should be thinking about,
Massa said.
So the camp was started with
the goal of letting kids who have
been affected by this disease just
be kids.
The camps first edition was
held at Camp Ockanickon in
Medford during the summer of
1995. Special to The Sun
Archery is just one of the many activities offered to the campers of Camp No Worries, held every year in Tabernacle. The program was creat-
ed for children with cancer and their siblings to allow them one week of the year to not focus on their illness and just act like kids.

As a result of a comprehensive
energy audit of its facilities and
implementation of recommended
energy improvements, the
Burlington County Bridge Com-
mission realized a savings of 16
percent, or $13,889 on its energy
and gas costs over the first four
months of this year.
The energy audit and improve-
ments were part of the Green-
backs to Go Green shared serv-
ice the commission championed
in partnership with the freehold-
ers that provided $2.5 million dol-
lars in energy upgrades to 31
Burlington County municipalities
and 10 schools, thanks to grant
monies obtained by the Commis-
sion.
We expected to see some ener-
gy savings, but to save nearly
$14,000 over four months? That
exceeded our expectations, com-
mission chairman John Comegno
said.
The energy audits identified
areas within facilities where ener-
gy-saving, cost-justified measures
could be applied. For the commis-
sions administration building in
Palmyra, that meant substantial
lighting retrofits, where existing
light bulbs are replaced with LED
or compact fluorescent light
bulbs, and renovations to existing
heating and cooling systems. Sim-
ilar improvements were made to
the commissions police, mainte-
nance and toll buildings in
Palmyra and to the administra-
tion building in Burlington.
The Burlington County Bridge
Commission manages the
Tacony-Palmyra and Burlington-
Bristol Bridges, and through its
economic development and im-
provement authority powers, as-
sists Burlington County munici-
palities in economic development
and community revitalization
projects and extends pooled fi-
nancing options to local govern-
ments and nonprofits in Burling-
ton County. These initiatives have
resulted in a savings of more than
$15.9 million.

Bridge commission sees 16 percent

The program hosted 14 chil-
dren that year, all of them pa-
tients. The next year, and in all
subsequent years, the camp has
been open to siblings of the pa-
tients as well.
Families are affected a great
deal when one of their children is
diagnosed with cancer. The ef-
fects are felt by their brothers and
sisters as well, which is why we
wanted the camp to be open to
siblings, Massa said.
The weeklong camp moved to
Camp Inawendiwin in Taberna-
cle in 2001 and is open for chil-
dren ages 6-16.
A medical staff with a focused
cancer expertise is present at the
camp throughout the week to
make sure the children are being
closely monitored.
By the end of the weeklong
program, which was scheduled to
wrap up Saturday the 29th, kids
will have had the opportunity to
fit in quite a number of summer
activities. This year featured a
tethered hot air balloon ride, a
Shrek-themed dance and a trip to
the zoo.
The camp is free for campers,
and any money raised is cycled
directly back into next years
camp.
Our staff is all volunteers, stu-
dents giving up their summer va-
cations, adults using their vaca-
tion time, Massa said. Because
of that, all the money we raise is
used for the camp, not to pay staff
members.
Supporting a weeklong
overnight camp for more than 100
campers and staff members is a
large expense. Massa knows it
would be impossible without the
help of a charitable community.
We are sustained on individ-
ual donations. Well have checks
come in for the next years camp
prior to us even sending out the
mailer of when it will take place,
Massa said.
Campers themselves also work
to raise money throughout the
year. Katie Haughey, an 11-year-
old from Medford Lakes, has been
going to Camp No Worries for
four years since her brother was
diagnosed with stage four neu-
roblastoma.
A veteran of both the camp and
being interviewed about her expe-
riences, Katie is quick to speak to
fundraisers she and her family
have conducted.
We have a tight community so
Ive hosted movie nights and yard
sales. I raised more than $300 this
year for my Girl Scout Bronze
Award, Katie said.
Kids staying involved with the
camp year after year is another
piece of why Camp No Worries is
still going strong almost 20 years
later. Despite making her feel old,
Massa said its an inspiration to
watch people grow with the pro-
gram.
Many of our counselors and
staff were campers themselves.
Theyve grown up with the camp
and now are ready to give back
every summer, Massa said.
The camp has also benefitted
from the support of the schools in
Mt. Laurel. Hillside Elementary
School raised more than $2,500,
and the PTO made donations as
well.
Even with the week just end-
ing, kids already were asking
Massa about plans for next year.
With it being our 20th year, we
want to make sure its our biggest
year yet, Massa said. We want
to make it a celebration.

The Tabernacle Sun
The Township Committee
adopted an ordinance at a meet-
ing on June 24 that will regulate
Tabernacles vacant and aban-
doned residential properties.
We feel this ordinance will go
a long way in addressing what we
are able to do with properties
that have become vacant, town-
ship solicitor Peter Lange said.
Residents had voiced concerns
at past meetings that the town-
ship should be able to regulate
properties that have been aban-
doned and become unsavory to
the neighborhood.
In many cases, the owners of
these properties have been neg-
lectful and are not maintaining
or securing them to an adequate
standard, officials said.
Owners will now be required
to register the property within 30
days of it becoming vacant or as-
suming ownership of the proper-
ty.
The registration will remain
valid for one year and will need
to be renewed each year the prop-
erty remains vacant.
Property owners will also have
to take several measures in addi-
tion to registering the property.
The building will have to be se-
cured from unauthorized entry
and a sign has to be posted with
contact information of who is re-
sponsible for the upkeep.
The exterior of the house, in-
cluding yards, fences, driveways
and sidewalks, must also be
maintained and free of trash or
excess grass and weed growth.
If the ordinance is violated,
the owner will be subject to fines,
and each day a violation contin-
ues it will be treated as a separate
offense.
The initial registration fee for
each property will be $500. The
renewal fee will increase to
$1,500, $3,000 and $5,000 each year
the property remains vacant.
The hope is that, with this fee
structure, owners will be incen-
tivized to either keep the proper-
ty productive or sell to someone
who will.
The ordinance was mostly met
with a positive reception from
the public, as it should help pre-
vent homes from falling into dis-
repair or becoming eyesores.
The ordinance also aims to
stop the decline of neighboring
property values as well as lower
the risk of fire or other public
health risks.
Tabernacle resident Fran
Brooks suggested that the ordi-
nance be amended now to include
commercial properties as well,
but the committee elected to
adopt the ordinance as is to get
the process of registration mov-
ing and revisit it later if neces-
sary.

P
rospective summer interns re-
joiced last month when a feder-
al district judge in Manhattan
ruled that not all internships can be
unpaid.
Not only did Manhattan federal dis-
trict judge William H. Pauley III rule
that Fox Searchlight studios had bro-
ken New York and federal minimum
wage laws when it failed to pay two in-
terns who worked on the set of the
movie Black Swan, he also gave the
go-ahead to a class action suit sought
by an intern who worked in Fox Enter-
tainment Groups offices.
Businesses have long relied on in-
terns to supplement their paid work-
force, with many of these internships
occurring during the summer months
when colleges are on break. On the
surface, Pauleys decision would
threaten that practice.
Dig deeper, though, and one can see
that it doesnt outlaw unpaid intern-
ships, but rather seeks to ensure that
any unpaid intern is actually getting
real-life work experience, and not just
delivering coffee.
Pauley referred to the Department
of Labors six-point test to determine
whether an internship can be unpaid:
It must be similar to training that
would be given in an educational envi-
ronment.
It must be an experience that is for
the benefit of the intern.
The intern must not displace regu-
lar employees, but work under close
supervision of existing staff.
The employer must derive no im-
mediate advantage from the activities
of the intern, and on occasion, its op-
erations may actually be impeded.
The intern is not necessarily enti-
tled to a job at the conclusion of the in-
ternship.
The employer and intern under-
stand that the intern is not entitled to
wages for the internship.
So, basically, to be eligible to be un-
paid, the internship must be valuable
to the intern himself or herself, not
just to the employer.
Sounds fair enough.
After all, cant we just all get our
own coffee?
Are unpaid interns over with?
A federal district judge may have put an end to the long practice
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on judge
William H. Pauley IIIs ruling on unpaid
internships?
Research for Better Teaching courses set for summer
Plans for Professional Development for
the staff of the Lenape District are set for
the summer. The summer months provide
a time for reflection and staff development
for both teachers and administrators.
For teachers there are two Research for
Better Teaching courses being offered this
summer.
The first, Studying Skillful Teaching 1
targets all teachers, paraprofessionals,
counselors, and child study team members.
This course supports teachers in improv-
ing student achievement by examining be-
liefs about teaching and building a reper-
toire of instructional strategies to match
students learning needs. Teachers are able
to identify the impact Professional Learn-
ing Communities have on teaching and stu-
dent learning.
The second course, Investigating Obsta-
cles to Achievement is a practical, field-test-
ed course, which focuses on the work that
teacher leaders, supervisors, and evalua-
tors do to support and sustain high quality
teaching.
This course specifically studies the
knowledge base on teaching, current arti-
cles, analysis of artifacts, role-plays, and
collegial consultation and feedback. This
course is specifically designed for teachers
who have at least one-year experience
Both RBT courses are taught using in-
district-trainers, who are certified teaching
staff members who have had extensive
training with the RBT professional devel-
opment model.
It is the expectation that all teachers pass
these courses prior to gaining tenure in the
LRHSD. The administration will also be
busy this summer.
First, they will be attending an evalua-
tion software workshop.
This session will begin the training for
administrators to use the newly created
teacher evaluation software, which has
been created exclusively for the LRHSD.
The same group of administrators will
be working with the in-district-trainers to
work through the language and expecta-
tions of the home-grown evaluation
model that our district was given the green
light to use beginning September 2013.
This two-day workshop will provide time
for valuable discussion amongst adminis-
trators who will be using this evaluation in-
strument at the beginning of the 2013-2014
school year. Recently, Dr. Tracey Severns,
chief academic officer, will be addressing
the transition to the Common Core State
Standards and the new assessments.
This program establishes a common
process for planning and managing re-
sources.
