Why Jprop? - a brief history For the last 30 years, feathering propellers have been the most efficient, all-round, drag reducing propeller for sailboats.
The best known make of feathering propeller is the MaxProp which has dominated the market since being introduced in the 70s and was at this time considered to be state of the art design. MaxProp is still sold today in its original form with some minor modifications, such as external lubrication. It was in the late 80s in Solbiate Olona Italy, that two companies; Cober srl (ltd) specialists in CNC technology and Marine Propeller set out to address what improvements could be made to this older design of feathering propeller that had, what were to them, inherent deficiencies. Their objective was to produce a factory permanently assembled feathering propeller using CNC machining technology. In order to achieve this, the Jprop was designed to meet the following criteria:

KEY KIT
Installation rather than assembly of prop on the shaft. Pitch is externally adjustable and provides a clear base-line from which to adjust the prop to the specific boat. All components are CNC machined to tolerance, allowing free movement and no need for the user to adjust components. Provide external lubrication. Designed to reduce wear.

Design Features
Jprop uses only helical (or continuously engaged) gears. Resulting in two distinct advantages:
Helical Gears
The blades of the propeller will have identical pitch at all times. Helical gears have a large contact area producing more strength and less wear.
The pitch setting is determined by the amount of rotation the planetary gears are allowed by the internal stop in the adjustable tail-cone. As the shaft (C) and the drive gear (B) rotate clockwise, the planetary gears (G) rotate the blades (F). The pitch gear (E) rotates counter-clockwise in this differential system. The housing remains stationary until the blades and pitch gear have rotated to the internal stop and therefore the pitch setting.
Jprops components are made from a variety of stainless steel and aluminum-bronze alloys. Each alloy is
Materials
designed to suit the specific properties of the application. For instance, the pitch gear, blades, housing and tail-cone are all made from different alloys resulting in less wear between the parts. The combination of stainless steel and aluminum-bronze components also enhance lubrication and minimize corrosion.
The non-directional blade shape of Jprop not only reduces drag when feathered under sail. It also enables, when properly pitched: A reverse thrust equal to forward thrust.
Elliptical Blade
Blade widths to be approximately 35% of the prop diameter (usually 25% on fixed sailor props). A maximum thrust comparable to standard power-boat propellers of the same dimensions (such as Federals Pleasure Propellers).
