Murud Janjira

A picturesque holiday spot with coconut and betel nut trees, Murud is situated in Raigad district in Maharashtra. Glittering coastline of sandy beach and the surrounding greenery makes this magnificent place a hot spot of the tourists. A small fishing village, Murud is famous for its marvelous beaches, ancient forts, and swaying coconut and beetal palms. The Panchala fort is a hill station which is a quiet and serene place to relax. The nearby hills of Murud-Janjeera holds a marvelous shrine dedicated to lord Dattatreya. The deity in this shrine is unique as it the three heads, and is the incarnation of the Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheswara. This fabulous temple also catches the panoramic view of the entire seashore, which makes the voyage to the hilltop a worthy experience. The atmosphere in Murud-Janjira is serene and pollution free. Adventure lovers can try a ride in a kattamaran - some sort of a country boat. It will be quite fun to travel in a bullock cart or in a tonga. A pretty fishing village with beaches hemmed with green coconut and palm groves, majestic mountains, and ancient monuments, Murud Janjira is a thriving tourist destination and a must see place.

When To Go
Murud Janjira enjoys a salubrious climate. It is very pleasant all through the year with cool breeze blowing all day long. During summers (March to June) the temperature never rises beyond 32C. Winters (November to February) are cool and the temperature is around 15C on an average. Monsoons are accompanied with medium rainfall. Annual celebrations held in honor of the elephant headed Lord Ganapathi in every February month is an attractive event. New Year celebrations are held here with great enthusiasm and festivities here. Best time to visit is September to June, may keep off monsoon months.

Travel within city


Murud Janjira is situated around 165 km from Mumbai and there are frequent buses and taxi services from Mumbai to Murud Janjira. The taxis from Mumbai costs around INR 3200 and they are comfortable. The nearest railway station is at Roha which is approximately an hour from Murud Janjira. They are taxis available from Roha to Murud Janjira. They cost around Rs 500. There are a few travel options in Murud Janjira that a person can choose from. Tourists can choose from cabs, government buses and large auto rickshaws. Autos and buses can be found easily and are available throughout the city and cabs can be booked in advance.

Bus
Government buses are an easy way to commute in the city. They are inexpensive and cost between Rs 10 and 30. However they might be crowded during the peak hours. Buses are not very comfortable, especially if they are crowded.

Shared Taxi
Shares auto rickshaws can be found all over the town. They are an extremely quick way to get around the city. However shared auto rickshaws are less comfortable. They are inexpensive and the maximum price to any place within the city is Rs 10.

Janjira Fort

A massive fort of the 16th century, surrounded by the majestic Arabian sea from all the sides the Janjira fort, is located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. Once the strong hold of Siddy dynasty, the fort has gained a reputation as an impregnable fort, since it had withstood so many attacks of the mighty Marathas and the English. Originally built as a wooden structure by the fisherman to get protection from the pirates, Janjira fort acquired its present shape after reconstruction. Now the fort has a number of towers and turrets to keep the ammunitions in it to ward off enemies. Being lashed away by the salt water for a long, much of Janjira fort has been putrefied and rotten. But the fort still remains with the same glory and grandeur. Timings: Open 7 am - 6 pm, closed on Friday noon - 2 pm

Murud Beach

One among the popular beaches of Maharashtra, 1.75 km long Murud beach looks like a festooned ornament. The vast expansion of white sandy beach and the crystal clear bluish water Murud is a delight for water enthusiasts. Fenced by the green palm trees, this pristine beach arose the imagination of any visitor. Though the weather is warm here, the gentle sea breeze cools down the atmosphere. Watching the sun rises through the mountains to the east is a remarkable sight and when the sun rises, the silvery sands began to glow for the whole day. Gol Gumbaz

Late Mohammed Adil Shah, the Sultan of Bijapur was a renowned ruler and a great warrior. Gol Gumbaz, is the glorious tomb of, the great Sultan, who is remembered for his administrative reforms. Situated in Bijapur, in the state of Karnataka, the dome is believed to have been constructed in the 17th century. Famed for the excellent Islamic architecture, this monument is considered to be the world's second largest after St Peter's Basilica of Vatican City, Rome. Seven storied towers of octagonal shape support the corners of this fantastic monument. The sound system in the dome is so designed that it reverberate even a murmuring sound return back to the person exactly nine times.

Ahmedganj Palace
Spread over a vast area of 45 acres, this palatial mansion is the private property of the descendants of the east while nawabs. The palace grounds hold a marvelous mosque and the tombs of the previous rulers. A mixture of mugal and gothic style architecture makes the palace an elegant mansion. There is an interesting story with regard to the tombs is in popular among the locals which says that the tombs are filled with treasures of untold wealth. Nobody dares to open the graves yet. A visitor to the palace will get a remarkable opportunity to have a glimpse of palace documents which are written down in a dead language by name Mori?. Garambi Dam (Victoria Jubilee Water Works)


Garambi Dam, is built by Nawab Sir Siddi Ahmed Khan, the last ruler of the east while Siddi reign. This dam is dedicated to Queen Victorias memory and so it has gained the popular appeal of Victoria Jubilee Water Works. A dream project of Late Ahammad Khan who is one among the progressive rulers of the Siddi Dynasty, Garabhi dam is the source of water supply to the town. The dam is situated on the backdrop of lush vegetation. The chirping of birds, sweet sound of the gushing water and all around greenery, the nature surrounds the dam is at its very best. Truly the dam site is a scenic valley to be visited.

Garambi Falls
A charming destination for water enthusiasts, Grambi falls located near to Murud in Maharashtra. This marvelous cascade, which falls from a height of 100 feet offers a breath taking view. It is very fun to have soak and drench oneself in this amazing gift of the nature. Another interesting aspect of this waterfall is that, its water is supposed to be very pure and one can even drink water from it. A hilly terrain, Nandgaon is located eight kilometers from Murud-janjira. This beautiful place is famous for the magnificent Shri Siddhivinayaka temple and its pristine beach. The fabulous shrine of the elephant headed god will be jam packed with devotees during the month of February. Ganesas Ulsav, which is celebrated here with pomp and splendor, is a major attraction of this holy place. The earthy and calm beach of Nandgaon has all the sizzles of a typical beach. The pollution free environment of this pristine beach is an emerging tourist attraction in Murud. A virgin beach surrounded by sloping hills is a marvelous scenery.
