ABOUT THIS FAMILY

Wilmer and his family live in a bamboo, plastic, and cardboard lean-to situated on the side of Wilmers fathers house. Wilmer works as a mason assistant but when construction jobs are unavailable he and his wife rely on the meager amount of corn and beans they grow to feed their family.

NAME Wilmer Aurelia Alison

AGE 33 33 2

WORK/SCHOOL Mason Assistant Farmer

According to Wilmer, the lack of job opportunities have not allowed him to provide a better life for his wife and children. During the rainy season, it is difcult to go to sleep, especially during heavy storms when rain saturates the walls and the wind threatens to atten their home. The worst aspect of the rainy season, however, is when the children get sick due to the constant humidity. The money spent on medicine creates even more hardship. Wilmer and his family are excited to begin the process of earning a house because he sees this as the only opportunity for his family to have a new beginning.
HOW FAMILIES LIKE THIS EARN THEIR HOUSE

ROAD REPAIR - Repairing roads is incredibly important in an area with constant mudslides, landslides, and downpours. More than a thousand people use this road daily and the hazardous conditions make it very dangerous for pedestrians. This also makes it possible for emergency services to access communities that were previously cut off from life-saving police, re, and medical services. SERVING NEIGHBORS - Neighbors coming together to serve each other is one of the most powerful ways to truly break the chains of poverty. When members of a community begin to serve each other, there is almost no end to what they can accomplish together. SCHOOL REPAIR - Imagine sending your child to school wondering if shell fall into a latrine today. This is the reality of so many in this area because of the moisture on the ground, holes dug for latrines cave in regularly. Many families serve at a local school digging deeper and safer holes for new latrines.
