Dear Students, At the very outset let me extend a hearty welcome to all of you aspiring to be the students of Central University of Kashmir. As we enter into the fourth year of our existence, we are convinced that our vision of being a world class institution for creation and dissemination of knowledge to nurture thoughtful, creative, contributing and humane citizens for the society to guide its destiny and for promoting global understanding is being translated into a tangible form. Launching of various professional job oriented programmes having relevance at regional, national and international levels; development of contemporary curricula; meeting various bench marks of quality assurance and development of a healthy governance structure in the University are our priorities. Equity, access and excellence in academics are our guiding principles. The University follows a student centric teaching approach to ensure a learning environment that produces academically sound and morally upright students who can take on the challenges of the present day life and would be productive individuals in the emerging knowledge society. We are committed to provide a rich environment that promotes the climate of inquisitiveness. The University continues with its policy of inviting reputed experts in various disciplines for interaction with our students, scholars and faculty. We encourage and support the students to participate in various cultural and competitive events at local and national levels. Our students have brought laurels to the University by winning many awards. The land for the permanent campus stands transferred to the University and the planning and development of the permanent campus is in full swing. At present the University is operating from a Transit Campus at Sonawar Srinagar and two Academic Blocks at Magarmal Bagh and Zainakote Srinagar. Within a short span of time the University has launched PG Programmes in Management, English, IT, Economics, Convergent Journalism, Mathematics, Urdu, Education, Tourism Management, one integrated B.A. LLB programme, LLM and Integrated M. Phil/ Ph.D. programmes in disciplines where senior faculty to guide the budding scholars is available. This Year we are launching one more PG programme in Politics (International Relations). The University has joined hands with other Central Universities to institutionalize Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) which provides the students an opportunity for admission in ten Central Universities located nationwide through a single application form and entrance test (CUCET). There is a great demand and expectations for quality higher education from this University. The University
Introduction
The Central University of Kashmir established by an Act of Parliament in 2009 is one of the 12 new Central Universities established by the Government of India during the XI Plan period to address the concerns of Equity and Access and to make quality higher education accessible to the people in educationally under-developed regions having Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) less than the National Average. As per the Central Universities (Amendment) Act 2009, the territorial jurisdiction of the Central University of Kashmir spreads to Kashmir Division of the Jammu & Kashmir State. However, admission to various programmes offered by the university is made on all India basis through a nation-wide Entrance Test. The permanent campus of the University is to come up at Tulmulla, Ganderbal, at a distance of 30 kilometers from the Srinagar city. Spread over about 500 acres of land, the upcoming campus will be flanked by world famous Manasbal Lake on one side and Shrine at Hazratbal & Khirbhawani on the other. The Unique geographical location, far from the maddening crowds of cities, offers ideal ambience for teaching and learning. Till the time permanent campus of the University comes up, the University has started its academic operations from its Transit Campus at Sonawar & two Academic Blocks at Magarmal Bagh and Zainakote Srinagar, so as to catch up the academic sessions. The University strives for democratization of education and recognizes the importance of affordable high quality inter-disciplinary educational programmes at a variety of levels to meet the capacity building and other employment related needs of our youth. The University is conscious of its responsibilities to provide competent faculty, world class infrastructure facilities and the most conducive learning environment. The University has adopted the latest academic reforms, laying due stress on critical elements like appointment of quality faculty, transparent admission procedures, and choice based credit systems, participatory teaching learning process and objective evaluation.

The Logo
The description of the University Logo is as under:

The 'Circular Frame' of the Logo symbolizes the 'Inclusive Policy of the University The 'Ribbon Base' on which the Circular Frame is resting depicts the 'Strong Scholarly Values' on which the foundation of the University is laid. The Leaf at the top end of the circle is a 'Chinar Leaf that defines the 'Unique Cultural & Geographical Identity of Kashmir. The Chinar Leaf symbolizes 'Longevity, Strength, Refreshment and Source of Life'. The inception of the leaf also signifies the 'Environmental Concern and Friendliness' that the University strives for. The 'Olive branches' are a symbol of 'Peace, Goodwill and Reconciliation'. The use of olive branch as a symbol of peace dates back to the 5th century B.C. The 'Book' in the University Logo symbolizes the main function of the University i.e., 'Creation and Dissemination of Knowledge. The 'Blue Color' of the logo outline stands for 'Scholarly Intent'; 'White Background' stands for 'Cleanliness': 'Green Color' of leaf stands for 'Youth

Salient Features of the University


The University offers innovative courses for complimenting the efforts of the already existing Universities in State and to enrich the academics milieu available to the students in this region. Recruitment of the faculty and the admission of the students is done on all-India basis with adherence to reservation policy of the Central Government. The admission to all the programmes of the University are made through a National-Level Entrance Examination for which admission is held in collaboration with other Central Universities at many centers across the country. The University possesses following essential features that have been conceived after considering various academic structure at National and International levels: A School system to encompass related centers with appropriate structures for administration to facilitate Choice Based Credit System. A Semester based programme structure to enlarge curricular space and encourage accelerated learning opportunities. All the programmes of study have Core, Elective, Skill-based and socially oriented courses with a focus on the holistic personality development of the students. Regular updation and revision of the curricula is carried out in terms of current knowledge, national and international developments and relevance of knowledge to the concerned discipline. To assess values, skills and knowledge imbibed by the students, comprehensive Continuous Internal Assessment is used. E-governance Facilitation Center to coordinate electronic administration as end-to-end solution is in place. A very rich library with subscription to a large number of journals and other e-resources. High speed internet connectivity to all students, faculty and other staff. Merit scholarship to meritorious students of PG/UG programmes and all the students of research degree programmes. Permanent Campus to be developed on the modern lines with features of green campus and energy efficient buildings.

Under these Schools, the University has already launched MBA, M.Sc. IT, M.A English, M.A Economics, M.A Convergent Journalism, M.Sc. Mathematics, M.A. Urdu, M.A. Tourism Studies, M.A. Education , Integrated BA LLB. From the current accademic session a new PG programme in Politics (International Relations) is being launched. Under these schools University plans to offer a wide range of additional academic programmes both short-term & long-term, credit & non-credit programmes leading to Certificate, Diploma, Under-graduate, Post-graduate and Doctoral Degrees which would be innovative in nature. These programmes would be developed after taking into account the academic and employment needs of our young generation. The University also plans to introduce a number of modular programmes in order to provide greater and more flexible learning environment.

Instructional System
Most of the instructions in the University are imparted using an integrated approach incorporating print material, audio-visual aids, class room tutorials, practicals, seminars, workshops, field work, Project work, etc. The University plans to utilize information & communication Technology (ICT) Or imparting education and training to maximum possible. Semester pattern, continuous internal evaluation, choice based credit system and academic autonomy to the individual departments is the core philosophy of the curricular strategies of the University. This pedagogical structure helps in regular updation and enrichment of the academic programmes based on a continuous review of teaching learning goals and assessment approaches.

Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)


To make the curriculum learner centric and to ensure the desired learning outcome, the University follows a Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for all the programmes of study. The system follows a modular pattern with each module carrying a certain number of credits depending upon the quantum of content/syllabus prescribed and the minimum number of teaching hours required. One credit denotes 15 hours of instructions. CBCS permit the students to: Learn at their own pace; Choose subjects from wide range of elective courses offered by the institutions; Undergo additional/value added courses and acquire more than the required number of credits, depending upon the learner's aptitude; Adopt an interdisciplinary approach in learning; Make best use of the expertise of faculty across the institution besides the particular department faculty; and Acquire knowledge, skill and other desired learning.

Integrated B.A. LL-B


Five-year integrated B.A, LLB programme is designed for students seeking a challenging, rigorous, interdisciplinary exposure to not only in law but also to the related disciplines. Furthermore, while the focal point will be the Indian Legal System, the teaching methodology will encompass a critical, comparative approach in order to broaden perspectives and sharpen analytical skills. Additionally, the ambit of studies will not just be laws as they exist and operate, but also how policy impacts law, and how law and policy interplay. The programme structure combines a BA and an LLB Degree in a creative manner so as to ensure greater richness, value and consistency. By offering 5 years of sustained quality education, students will not just obtain a diverse and intellectually challenging academic training in various significant, inter-related disciplines but also a premium Professional degree. Students will spend the first three years of the programme towards attaining a thorough grounding in the essential academic prerequisites for a sound legal training i.e., disciplines, such as political science, economics, history, philosophy, sociology etc. as well as vital language and computer skills. Over the next two years, students will undergo extensive academic training in fundamental and specialized subjects in law as well as exciting new inter-disciplinary areas such as law and economics, governance, regulation, and policy making, which are now being offered at the leading law schools of the world. Additionally, they will be offered a broad range of clinical courses that will teach practical skills for being an effective lawyer.

Master of Science in Information Technology (M. Sc. IT)


The Department of Information Technology is the first department established under the School of Engineering & Technology, with the objective of developing highly skilled IT professionals capable of meeting the ever changing needs of the IT Industry. The Department is currently running M. Sc. IT programme designed to provide a contemporary perspective on IT with focus on Software Engineering, Embedded Systems, IT Security and Real Time Image Processing. Special emphasis is made on hands-on experience by making the students participate in small projects. Various specializations offered to the students have been carefully chosen to provide the students an insight to enhance and advance their knowledge in the areas of academic & industrial importance. The Department has state of the art hardware including Dedicated Blade Servers (SUN) for various applications. The Department has well equipped labs with 1:1 student PC Ratio. The Department has also dedicated optical fiber connectivity to internet. Master of Arts in English (M.A. English)


The Department of English is the first department established under the school of languages. The Department is manned by a dedicated team of teachers who represent an exquisite blend of youth and experience. The MA programme in English offers students the opportunity to study the English language in depth at postgraduate level. Specifically. it aims to provide students with the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to describe modern English. The Programme provides the students with an opportunity to develop their knowledge of a wide range of literary works in English from the Renaissance to the present. Since English is a world language, the students will not only read works from the more 'traditional' canons of British and American literature, but also form such diverse areas as the Caribbean, South-Africa and India. Literature knows no bounds in time or place, and the Department of English offers you a chance to explore this rich variety. The Programme is of interest to those who wish to continue for a research degree in English Language or Linguistics, those who wish to become teachers of English, or those intending to pursue a career in writing.

There is a growing realization among students about the study of modern Indian languages that are an expression of the cultural traditions and the linguistic richness of the country in particular and South East Asia in general. Among these languages, Urdu occupies important place as it is an embodiment of richest traditions and the composite culture of India. It is but natural that Central University of Kashmir, located in the State of Jammu & Kashmir which has Urdu as its official language, should provide opportunities for study of this language to all the students who came from various parts of the country. To impart quality education, the Department plans to supplement the teaching learning process with seminars on comparative literature, intercultural humanities, linguistics, translation, Philosophy and Aesthetics etc. The Department plans to offer specializations in various classical and modern disciplines. Master of Arts in Tourism Management (MATM)


One of the phenomenally growing contemporary industries is tourism. In order to formalize and augment the professional entrepreneurship in this ever-growing sector and expand the underlying opportunities for potential young people, The Central University of Kashmir, under the School of Business Studies, has launched Masters programme in Tourism Management from academic session 2012. The aim of the university is to make this programme a pioneer of higher learning in tourism and also a trend setter at the national level with emerging knowledge, embodying innovative training techniques in its curriculum. The university is poised to put in place dynamic, experienced and multi-disciplinary faculty to ensure high quality teaching of the courses. The syllabus of the programme has been designed to equip the students with the skills and knowledge essential for carving a successful career in diverse fields of tourism. The department is committed to consistently recast the programme to blend it perfectly with changing industry requirements.

With the ever increasing convergence of various technologies, the new media are also changing. Conventionally, we used to have only print and broadcast Journalism but now we have new media for Journalism including web and mobile devices. This programme aims at providing students with systematic knowledge and the tools to critically review the complex relationships between government and society at various levels and in different contexts. It enables you to evaluate the theories and paradigms within the broad field of politics and international relations, and to draw lessons from empirical studies involving both quantitative and qualitative investigations. It also aims to develop students' ability to deploy research strategies and methods in an appropriately advanced fashion to critically evaluate research at the current limits of theoretical understanding, and to equip students so that they have the ability to master complex political concepts and evaluate the significance of major developments in political thought in general as well as international relations theory. This MA programme involves two year of full time study comprising four semesters. Combining the study of international relations with an analysis of public policy formulation and state governance, this programme will provide an advanced understanding of how political institutions and processes operate in international politics, and how policy is framed. You will be introduced to central issues such as theories of the policy-making process, alongside current themes and issues in International Politics, Collective Identities, Political Theory and Practice, Political Ideology, Issues in the Politics of Military Occupation, Human Rights, International Theory and Region, Nation and Citizen in Southeast Asia. Library
The Central University of Kashmir has established three Libraries one each at its Transit campus at Sonwar, academic blocks HMT and Magarmal Bagh, Srinagar to provide access to the faculty members, students and the University staff to a wide ranging books and journals. In a very short span of time, these libraries have procured more than 5000 text and reference books including books related to the competitive examinations for the students who wish to appear in various competitive examinations such as IAS, IFS, KAS, NET, SET, GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, CAT, MAT, Bank Probationary Officers examination. The Library is subscribing to various journals, magazines and newspapers of National and International repute. Training & Placement


The Training and placement Cell under the supervision of Placement Officer of the University aims at making available quality placement opportunities for students and at maintaining linkages with industry and Research Organizations. The Cell organizes various activities throughout the year in order to prepare the students for campus selection programmes. It strives at providing a supportive environment to the Education offered by the University for raising social consciousness and personality development. Decisions related to selection of companies visiting the campus for recruitment are broadly based on parameters like: job profile, growth prospectus, packages and number of students the company intends to select. The Placement Cell endeavors at: Liasoning with Industry to provide ample opportunities for placements; Final placement of all students; Arranging Corporate/ Industry Guest Lecturers; Organizing Industrial Visits; Develop Personality of the students by imparting the need based training; and Counsel students about industry practices & improve their Emotional Quotient. The cell has successfully placed a number of students with reputed companies during the last academic year.

Hostel
To provide safe, secure and affordable residential accommodation to the students coming from remote areas of the State and other parts of the country, the University has set-up two hostels separately for boys and girls. The hostels possess all kinds of amenities for making the living of the boarders comfortable and enjoyable. The rooms are well ventilated and airy and are fitted with fans and comfortable furniture. The rooms also have uninterrupted power back-up to ensure that the students do not face any difficulty in their studies. There is a local market near the hostel having the facility of PCO, Fax, medicine shops & general stores etc. thus catering to the day to day needs of the boarders.

Medical Consultation
The University has initiated the process to hire the services of a Physician who would visit the Campus twice a week to give free medical consultation to the students.

Merit Scholarships
To promote competitiveness among the students, the University provides scholarships to the students registered for various programmes of study under the scheme" Merit Scholarships"'. Under this scheme, two meritorious students, determined on the basis of their End Semester result from each programme, are provided a fellowship @ Rs. 1,000/- per month for every semester.

Student Safety insurance scheme


The University subscribes to" Student Safety Insurance Policy" for all its students at the commencement of the academic year from a Nationalized Insurance Company. Under this arrangement, a student is required to contribute a small amount towards student safety insurance policy per annum. This scheme provides for reimbursement of up to Rupees One Lakh in case of hospitalization or accidental death of insured student.

Special Provisions for SC/ST Students


To promote higher education among students from weaker sections of the society, the University is providing special facilities for SC/ST and Physically Handicapped students. The University provides reservation in respect of the SC/STs as per the Government of India/ UGC norms. SC/ST candidates are also exempted from payment of registration fee when they apply for admission. In addition to this, in order to maximize their opportunities for higher education, the provisions of interchangeability are operated between SCs and STs in filling the seats for these categories. SC/ST students are also provided guidance and assistance in getting scholarship from various Government agencies.

Computer/Browsing Center
The Computer/ Browsing Center is established with a view to facilitate, foster and support the teaching and research goals of the University through the deployment and delivery of computing and communication services to the University's faculty and students. The center also provides access to the students of various departments to computers for their course and project work.

General Guidelines
l l l l l The selection for all the programmes offered by the University is made on the basis of Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) jointly conducted by 10 Central Universities at various centers located across India. The Test comprises of MCQ/ Descriptive Answer Questions 30% weightage is given to the merit obtained in the qualifying examination 70% weightage is given to the score obtained in the Entrance Test No candidate shall be eligible for admission to any programme if he/she is already registered for any full time Programme of this University or any other University/Institute. No candidate admitted to any programme shall undertake any employment or join any other course of study before completing the minimum residency period. The filled in Entrance Test Form shall be submitted in the prescribed form to the Central University of Kashmir, Transit Campus, Sonwar, Srinagar -190 004 (J&K) The students can apply online or offline for all the programmes offered by the participating Universities including the Central University of Kashmir. For Applying online, the students shall have to log in to the website www.cucet.ac.in The offline application forms shall be available at Central university of Kashmir at Transit Campus, Sonawar, Srinagar The Filled in offline application forms along with the requisite fee shall be submitted to the Central University of Kashmir, Transit Campus, Sonawar-190 004. The Selection for various programmes will be done on the basis of the performance of the eligible candidates in the central Universities common Entrance Test (CUCET). However, in case of admission to M.A Tourism Management and M.A Convergent Journalism programmes, the candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their performance in CUCET. The shortlisted candidates will have to appear for Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI).
