Australias leading retail outlets

Australia has one of the most concentrated grocery markets in the world. Woolworths limited and Wesfarmers (owner of Coles) account for almost 80% of supermarket sales, 60% of alcohol retail, 50% of petrol retail and 40% of all retail in Australia. The more market share they have, the more influence they have over suppliers, and the easier it is to stamp out smaller independent retailers. The largest retail chain in Australia in total revenue terms is Woolworths Limited. The Woolworths group includes the following businesses: Woolworths, Safeway (Supermarkets) Big W (Discount Department Stores) Tandy (300 retail electronics stores) Dick Smith Electronics (196 retail electronics stores) Woolworths Liquor, BWS, Dan Murphy's (Liquor Stores) Caltex Woolworths Plus (Petrol Stations) Australian Leisure & Hospitality Group Limited (270 licensed venues and over 450BWS and Dan Murphy's retail liquor outlets) The second largest retail operator in Australia is Perth-based Wesfarmers Limited whose retail divisions include a portfolio of diversified retail operations covering supermarkets, general merchandise and specialty department stores, fuel and liquor outlets and home improvement and office supplies. Wesfarmers' Coles Division operates 2,231 food, liquor and convenience outlets across Australia, through the Coles, BiLo, Vintage Cellars, Liquorland, 1st Choice, Coles Express and Pharmacy Express brands, as well as a hotel portfolio. The Wesfarmers Kmart Division operates 182 discount variety stores throughout Australia and New Zealand as well as 263 Kmart Tyre & Auto Service stores. The Wesfarmers Target Division operates a nationwide chain of apparel and homewares discount department stores. Wesfarmers operates in the areas of retail, coal mining, energy, insurance, chemicals and fertilisers, and industrial and safety products. It bought Coles Group in 2007 for $22 billion. Metcash, who supply IGA Supermarkets, accounts for 16% of supermarket sales. Metcash distributes primarily to independently owned stores. They supply IGA, Foodland, Foodworks, 7Eleven, Lucky 7, BP and several liquor retailers. Woolworths and Metcash are both set to move into hardware retail, to compete with Wesfarmers Bunnings. Metcash bought 50.1% of Mitre 10, while Woolworths bought Danks and is planning to open 150 big-box hardware warehouses over the next five years.
