New Miele topp-loaders

Great convenience on the smallest of footprints
Miele's new W 600 toploader series represents a convincing product concept. Alongside meeting the highest of requirements regarding gentle laundry care, user convenience and low consumption, Miele's new series of toploaders also meets calls for low sound emissions in both the washing and spinning cycles. This was recently confirmed by an independent product test carried out by Germany's SLG GmbH materials testing institute. In this independent test, Miele's W 647 WPM was named the 'quietest toploader on the market'. This claim applies to both the wash and spin cycles. Alongside the Miele model, the test also covered five other toploaders from reputable manufacturers. This certificate is equally relevant to all other Miele toploaders from the W 600 series fitted with the same noise-abatement package. Models with lower spin speeds achieve the same low sound emissions even without insulation. Low noise levels are, of course, of particular significance on toploaders which are typically installed in bathrooms. In situations where even quieter operation is important, for instance at night when children are sleeping, an 'Extra quiet' option can be selected to reduce drum rotation even further and omit the spin cycle entirely. This new option is to be introduced first on toploaders. Low noise levels are the result of a sophisticated technical design. Firstly, selected W 600 toploaders feature an insulation package which results in even the spin cycle being whisper-quiet. The machine design centres on a spaceframe construction with a floor tray, further preventing noise emanating from the machine along the floor. A DC motor with PWM (pulse width modulation) controls ensures quiet, smooth-running properties. In addition to this, all Miele toploaders have a third lid, in addition to the drum hatch and the machine lid, which further dampens sound emissions. The patented ComfortLift feature links the two outer lids to simplify handling. Low consumption A Triple A rating best marks for energy efficiency, wash and spin performance guarantees perfect wash and spin results. Thanks to the launch of an innovative spin profile even models W 643 WPM and W 647 WPM with a maximum spin speed of 1400 rpm achieve an A rating for spin efficiency. Models from the W 627 WPM upwards featuring Miele's patented sensor rinse also achieve a very low water consumption of only 45 litres. With respect to energy efficiency, Miele toploaders in the standard programme are 10% more efficient than A-rated models. This is achieved through a special spin profile. And, of course, the lower the residual moisture, the shorter the drying cycle that follows! User convenience The new toploaders are on a par with their frontloading counterparts when it comes to user convenience. User friendliness is assured on all W 600 toploaders through the design of the casing, the ComfortLift feature and the automatic drum positioning system. The latter ensures that the drum is automatically aligned with the drum hatch and secured in position on opening the lid. Depending on the model, Miele toploaders also excel in terms of the wide range of languages they offer, their transport base and a range of user interfaces involving rotary selectors and light-touch switches. Drum lighting, previously the preserve of only frontloaders, now also features on toploaders. Model W 647 WPM has a maintenance-free power LED. In order to keep energy consumption as low as possible, the drum lighting switches off automatically 10 seconds after closing the lid, or after five minutes if the lid is left open and the machine is switched on. Miele's machine design is protected by international patent rights. A striking feature is the lid with a front bevel and a drum hatch inclined to face the user. The integrated control panel in the front section of the lid with a 38 incline ensures not only optimum clarity and simple programme selection, it also offers user convenience when loading and unloading the drum. The inclined loading hatch offers a clearer view into the drum. A machine height of 90 cm and a raised drum axis means that users do not need to stoop or reach in as far to retrieve laundry from the drum.

The Miele Corner

Patented design A 20-year life cycle is de rigueur at Miele in the design and manufacture of new machines. At the same time, Miele always endeavours to incorporate innovative thinking and technology in its new products. This applies not only to external, visible features but also to what goes on behind the scenes. At the same time, Miele tries never to lose sight of its main aim of offering customers tangible improvements. And the new water-containing outer drum subscribes to this very principle, a drum design first implemented on a range of products for the North American market and now used on toploaders. The patented design is a combination of high-end materials in the form of a fibre-glass reinforced polypropylene drum and a cast-iron bearing cross. Laundry care made easy Modern consumers also expect a washing machine to be not only 'thorough' but also 'gentle' to laundry. Miele realised at an early stage that fabric care is also almost as important as the thoroughness of a wash, and steered developments in this direction accordingly. Thanks to a combination of patented Miele honeycomb drum and redesigned programmes, Miele washing machines guarantee optimum gentle laundry care together with low consumption. A further important contribution to gentle laundry care is Miele's programme selection philosophy which involves eliminating potential damage to laundry caused by incorrect programme selection. Miele standard and special programmes in themselves represent a significant contribution towards gentle laundry care. Programmes are designed to achieve optimum treatment of fabrics without compromising wash and rinse results, combined with low water consumption. The fascia on all Miele toploaders is characterised by simplicity and clarity, ensuring simple operation despite a wide range of programmes. Miele offers two approaches to programme selection: rotary selectors and light-touch switches. User-friendly operating concepts are the results of useability tests which are regularly performed by Miele. The purpose of these tests is to determine the preferences and habits of target-group users at an early stage in the product engineering process. Useability tests are on-going trials and surveys which flank R&D activities and are not simply 'one-off' tests. Incorporating the results in new products guarantees simple, self-explanatory controls.

Enhanced quality of life

Enhanced quality of life
Years ago, Miele introduced the Medicair vacuum cleaner, a customised solution to clear the air for allergy sufferers when doing the housework. Now the company has taken up the delicate subject of allergies once again and launched the first washing machine for allergy sufferers. The W 2585 Medicwash is equipped with a special rinse process to ensure thorough removal of even the smallest traces of detergent residue, and additional programmes for particularly hygienic, gentle washing of fabrics and pillows. Allergens are airborne substances which induce allergies and are present all around us. As more and more people react sensitively to allergens, the number of allergy sufferers has increased significantly in the last few years. All age groups are affected and the increasing number of children suffering from hay fever, asthma and skin diseases is alarming. In Germany, approximately every third child and fifth adult currently suffers from allergies and the tendency is rising. To ensure that fabrics are as free of allergens as possible, Miele has developed a washing machine tailored to the needs of allergy sufferers. The development of this machine was based on the wealth of experience the company has gained in the production of machines for clinical applications. For the W 2585 WPS Medicwash, Miele has designed a special allergen-reducing rinse process which ensures thorough removal of all traces of detergent residue. In the Cottons, Minimum iron and Delicates programmes, the Medicwash has three rinse cycles, compared to the two offered by a conventional washing machine. The 'Rinse Plus' additional function pushbutton enables selection of a fourth rinse cycle; a userprogrammable fifth rinse is available in the Cottons, Hygiene and Minimum iron programmes, if required. This feature will be greatly appreciated particularly by those suffering from severe allergies or skin diseases. The new rinse process is supplemented by a special rinse spin cycle, developed following extensive testing on a wide range of different fabrics to ascertain the reduction of zeolites (detergent residue) in different types of fabric in the rinse and spin processes. Special programmes for allergy sufferers The innovative rinse process is supplemented by additional wash programmes, including a newly developed Hygiene programme. In this programme with an extended temperature holding time (30 minutes), dust mites are killed through exposure to a temperature of 60C. Fabrics such as cotton and linen which cannot be washed at 95C are thus rid of pathogens. The increased water level also ensures removal of deposits caused by greasy ointments. The most significant cause of respiratory problems are the excreta of the 0.1 mm dust mite. Since dust mites thrive in warm, damp conditions, pillows are a particular source of allergies. The Medicwash therefore offers an additional programme specially designed to enable one or two pillows with a feather, down or synthetic filling to be washed at a temperature of 60C or 95C. The enlarged 30 cm door opening means that the honeycomb drum is easier to load, and the wash rhythm is specially designed to cater for bulky pillows: after the drenching phase, pillows are spun at high speed, deflating them to a minimum. In order to rid pillows of dust mites and excreta, an individual programme sequence with high temperatures and a high water level was developed.

New fabrics should be thoroughly and gently washed prior to being worn for the first time, as they may contain chemical residue as a result of changed production and finishing methods. This residue may cause skin irritation and problems with dermatitis. The Medicwash washes new cotton, towelling and polyester fabrics at 30C in the programme for new fabrics, which offers two rinses and an appropriate water level. Other Medicwash features include load-size sensing technology and a dispensing recommendation: The electronic controls calculate the amount of detergent required for the appropriate programme and load size and the recommendation appears as a percentage in the display. This ensures that the correct amount of detergent is dispensed for each load and eliminates the risk of overdosing which is particularly problematic for allergy sufferers. In the additional 'Short' programme, slightly soiled fabrics can be quickly washed at 40C, enabling garments worn outdoors to be rid of pollen.

The difference between washing in the US and in EU

The explanation is as follows: Both continents use whitening agents (bleach) in their washing powders. The difference is that in the US the bleach is chlorine based (activated at lower temp. than 30C), in Eu we use peroxide based bleach that is activated at higher temp (55<). What makes it even more complicated is that in Eu there are enzymes in washing powders (biological agents, naturally occurring in our bodies as well) that dissolve fat, oil, grass etc based stains. These enzymes are active between 30 to 40 degrees. So what washing machine producers have to do is to make their programs as follows: f.eks. Cotton wash: the water heated up to 30C and kept at it for 10-15min (enzymes are active) then the machine heats the water to the required temp. (60C) so the bleach can act. The high temp. is kept for a period of time for letting the bleach have time to act and also to kill bacterias effectively. This is also one of the reasons why Eu w.machines have longer time to do the laundry. In the US w.machines are hooked up to the warm and cold water tap, they load the warm water straight in the cabinet, which again determined how warm one keeps their warm water tank and the washing starts. Water cools quickly, bleach acts. Washing time is very short. (And of poor quality). American w.machines do not use internal heaters that allow the water to be kept at high temp. long: killing mites, bacterias, virus etc. The other bad thing with American machines is that the drum is vertical, while Eu machines have horizontally placed drums: clothes have more mechanical friction and need very little water hence energy and water consumption are minimum, while washing performance is top quality. What keeps Eu clothes white is this mechanical action of the horizontal drum, while Am clothes are kept white because of the bleach (damages clothes over time). One more thing: Chlorine based bleach kills aquatic life while peroxide based bleach destroys itself already in the machine above 55C and are neutralized by the time it is out of the machine. http://www.miele.ca/miele/canada/lndry_tech.asp http://www.miele.ca/miele/canada/lndry_prevmods.asp To kill bacteria effectively you need the water to be kept at min 60C for min 30 min; 75C min 15 min; 80C 10 min; 85C 5 min; 95C 1 min (internal heater is required to keep temp high so long!)

The horizontal axis drum: The key to better cleaning

There are four primary factors in every cleaning process, whether you're washing your hands or cleaning your laundry: Time, Temperature, Mechanical Action and Detergent. Results vary depending on the percentage each factor plays in the process. Reducing detergent and increasing time yields different results than increasing the temperature and reducing action. Mechanical action The heart of every washing machine is its drum. The drum is where the work is done and the laundry is placed. A vertical drum, typically used in top-loading machines, holds large quantities of water while an agitator jerks the laundry back and forth. This agitator system is very aggressive. It limits your options and can damage your laundry. Time The time required to clean laundry is never a constant. Some fabric types simply take longer to clean than others. Time should vary based on the fabric type and temperature selected. Temperature What exactly is hot, warm or cold? Depending on your water heater, they can mean a lot of different things. Water temperature is an essential key to proper cleaning results. Not only should water be a certain temperature to begin with, but that temperature must be maintained throughout the wash cycle. Poor cleaning results are typically caused by improper temperatures. Detergent Depending on the action and water temperature, detergent requirements change. A vertical drum design with a low water temperature relies heavily on detergent for cleaning. A more efficient horizontal drum that can adjust and maintain the water temperature reduces not only the amount of detergent needed but also the role that detergent plays.

Top-loaded vertical drum Can damage clothing and provide poor cleaning results because an agitator yanks garments back and forth in a stationary drum full of water.

Angled drum Deprive garments of appropriate washing action because items ball up at the bottom of the drum. According to a leading consumer magazine, this angled design produced the worst washing performance of all units tested.

Miele's horizontal drum Provides superior washing action for the largest variety of fabrics using gravity, specially-designed fins, and very little water.

Hydromatic Washing
You'll notice better cleaning results with your Miele washing machine. That's because Miele machines use a different washing action than most machines: a horizontal drum. Used throughout Europe and in nearly every commercial laundry in North America, horizontal drums offer better cleaning performance than the vertical drums found in most top loading machines. Miele's unique Hydromatic system varies the speed at which the drum rotates. The scoop and ladle fins shower the laundry at slower speeds and tumble the load at faster speeds. This system guarantees that all your laundry, even woolen items, are thoroughly cleaned every time.

Up, Up and Away

As you might expect, Miele washing machines use very little water. This means less detergent and less energy consumption with every load. To help reduce drying times, Miele washing machines take the first step in the drying process. By spinning your laundry at very high speeds, Miele washing machines can extract nearly 65% of the moisture. That means shorter drying times, lower drying temperatures and less wear and tear on your clothes. Some Miele washing machines can spin at speeds as high as 1600 RPM. However, not everything you wash should spin that fast, so Miele makes sure each program has a maximum safe spin speed.

The Age of Novotronic

Novotronics , Miele's surface mounted design (SMD) microprocessor, control everything in the washing machine from the amount of water used to the final spin speed. They also control moisture levels and temperatures in the tumble dryers. The Novotronic controls continuously monitor the activity of the machine, sensing an unbalanced load, drain or intake faults and spin speeds. Programs can be modified to increase water levels or to adjust the number of rinses. These are just a few of the benefits that the Novotronic controls have over conventional mechanical controls.

Miele Technology

For generations, Miele washing machines have been known for their thorough yet gentle care of fabrics. To further this technology, Miele now introduces its latest revolution, the Honeycomb washing drum. Forged from the very best stainless steel in a convex indentation resembling a honeycomb pattern, the byproduct of this patented advancement is an 80% reduction in the water exit holes and the development of a network of water channels that actually create a thin water layer that cushions your clothing while the drum rotates. By indenting and reducing the size and volume of water exit holes, there is virtually no chance your

clothes will be damaged from snags against the steel holes. Additionally, the honeycomb indented design maintains a constant cushion of water between your clothes and the drum, allowing for maximum, thorough washing; results proven better than hand washing. This means your valuable wardrobe will be cleaner and will last even longer if cared for in a Miele The image above shows a terry cloth bath towel at high spin speed actually penetrating the water exit holes of the washing drum. washing machine! Since the introduction of our first washing machine in 1901, Miele has continuously made extraordinary advancements in the world of appliances. Mieles front-loading washing machines are no exception. With their exceptional features, they can actually improve the look and feel of your clothes! They offer a variety of programs that allow you to care for every type of fabric in your closet - from durable cotton to delicate cashmere. It all starts with the brain of the machine, called Novotronic, which is Miele's surface mounted design (SMD) microprocessor. Novotronic continuously monitors and controls all activity in the machine, from the amount of water used, to sensing an unbalanced load. It also ensures the correct spin speed for special programs, such as the Woolens Program, where the correct spin speed is programmed to protect and pamper your finest sweaters. The revolutionary Honeycomb washing drum is washing the same towel, spinning at the same speed, and shows virtually no penetration of the towel. Among other important features, Miele's unique Hydromatic Wash System plays an important role in the excellent cleaning results noticeable after using a Miele washing machine. This system varies the speed at which the drum rotates, guaranteeing all your laundry - from your jeans to your silks are gently and thoroughly cleaned every time, using only a minimal amount of water and detergent. Every Miele washing machine is equipped with DualTherm internal heating elements. These elements allow the water to be heated to high temperatures, regardless of the intake water temperature. This, together with the wash action of Novotronics, means you can do away with using harsh chemical additives, such as chlorine bleach, and still get your whites their brightest. Miele takes the same care for your laundry in the dryer as in the washing machine. Miele dryers utilize Novotronic technology to monitor moisture levels within the laundry rather than using a timed drying cycle. With a timed drying cycle, items may be dry long before the timer shuts down the machine. By drying to a specific moisture level, the dryer can never over-dry your laundry. How does it work? A very low voltage electrical charge is passed through the laundry between two contacts, one on the drum and the other on the wall of the dryer. The machine measures the time it takes for this signal to pass between the contacts to determine how much moisture is in the laundry. This, together with the Miele auto reversing drum action ensures your laundry is never over or under dried by tumbling laundry in two directions. This bi-directional action evenly dries the entire load and prevents items form being "trapped" in the middle of the load. This process also helps minimize wrinkling. The Novotronic controls also indicate the interim stages reached during the drying process. Once the drying is completed, a cooling down stage begins. The machine tumbles the laundry dry and replaces the warm, moist air with cool, dry air; halting the drying process. If your laundry is left unattended after the buzzer sounds, the machine will continue to occasionally tumble the laundry for up to 60 minutes to prevent any creases from forming. There are eight programs which are based on moisture levels in the laundry. Programs range from 'Extra Dry' for items that will be stored away in your closet immediately, to 'Hand Iron', which leaves enough moisture to make ironing a breeze! In Eu it was recommended to wash at low temp to save enrgy but now both the Danish and Norwegian forbrukerrdet recommend to use 60C and higher temp to kill bacterias! http://forbrukerportalen.no/Artikler/2007/lukten_av_40_grader?expandedtopic=1172232477.37

German Allergy and Asthma Association held a survey on this issue on behalf of Miele. The results of this survey, in which 4000 members were polled, were taken as a basis for the development of the world's first washing machine for allergy sufferers. The Medicwash is equipped with special programmes and functions tailored to the particular needs of allergy sufferers: A world premiere in the laundry-care sector. In a target-group analysis, the German Allergy and Asthma Association selected a test group of allergy sufferers for the survey and asked them questions on the subject of laundry care. In the survey, participants were required to give information on their laundry-care habits, including how often they change laundry (e. g. towels, bed linen, clothing), the use of detergent and fabric conditioner and which fabrics are actually machine-washed. In another category, the test consumers were then asked which standards they require of their washing machines. People with extremely sensitive skin and those with respiratory problems expect particularly high standards of their washing machine. Since it is particularly important for allergy sufferers that every trace of detergent is thoroughly removed, a high water level in the rinse cycle is a top priority. Allergy sufferers are even willing to accept higher water consumption as long as their washing machine provides the required results. Furthermore, the survey revealed that many allergy sufferers also require special hygiene programmes, for example to ensure the killing of dust mites in bedding. Those polled also expressed a wish for programmes enabling more heavily soiled laundry to be processed at lower temperatures, whilst still ensuring excellent hygiene standards. Miele's Medicwash machine was developed on the basis of the German Allergy and Asthma Association survey. Outstanding features of this new washing machine include a range of different programmes and functions not available on conventional models: A special 60C Hygiene programme, a Pillows programme, a programme for new fabrics and, above all, a new rinse and spin process to ensure that laundry is rid of every trace of detergent. Miele and the German Allergy and Asthma Association are convinced that this machine is the ideal solution to cater for the sensitive needs of allergy sufferers.

100 years of Miele washing machine:From brawn to brain

100 years of Miele washing machine:From brawn to brain
This year the washing machine celebrates its 100th anniversary: Back in 1901, Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann built their first wooden-tub washer and, in doing so, took a decisive step in the history of domestic appliances. Put poetically, this development was eventually to liberate the housewife from the drudgery of the scrubbing board.A century ago, Monday's work was hard graft and toil. On the eve of the big day, dirty laundry was sorted and steeped in soda lye. At the crack of dawn next morning, wood and coal would have to be carried in and a fire kindled. With bended back, the work continued: Soaked laundry had to be wrung out, rubbed with soap and stains scrubbed. By the time this was complete the laundry could be thrown in the water in the tub, which by now had reached the boil. With a wooden paddle (and a fair portion of elbow grease) the laundry had to be jostled and kept in motion in the tub. Once washing in boiling water was over, the laundry items had to be rubbed individually on a washboard - with hands chapped from wringing garments in soapy water. And rinsing was no easier either, as the process had to be repeated time and time again to ensure the thorough removal of lather. This was followed by blueing, bleaching and rinsing once again, washing woollens in lather and cleaning the wash tub. After washing came wringing, ironing and the starching of collars and table cloths. And Monday's fallout was still noticeable on Friday. And then, all of a sudden, a wooden tub washer, nothing more than a glorified butter churn designed by two young entrepreneurs from Herzebrock one year previously, arrived on the scene to put paid to laundry-day blues. Both machines relied on a cross-shaped wooden paddle inside the tub: On the one it churned cream into butter, on the other it jostled laundry.Strong arms were still necessary, though, to keep the laundry in motion. By 1904, though, even that changed: The agitator was now belt-driven: A leather drive belt connected an external motor to the machine. By 1914, the washing machine was a self-contained unit with its own electric motor. In the Thirties, metal tub washers were to slowly usurp their wooden counterparts. But Miele's unbreakable wooden tubs continued to be built through to the Sixties before finally being displaced by sheet metal. The first metal casing was enamelled in 1938. Since those early days, the art of enamelling has been perfected and has come to stand for the quality of Miele appliances.During the Fifties, the washing machine conquered more and more homes. In the early days, laundry had to be transferred dripping wet from the washing machine into a spin dryer - an unpleasant and messy business. But that stopped in 1956 with the introduction of the fully automatic washing machine, able to wash and spin in one and the same drum. This was followed just a few years later by single-knob controls - still today the best approach to programme selection on the market. In the quest for even better technical solutions, 1978 marks an important milestone with the introduction of microcomputers and sensor electronics. Solid-state controls today are the brains of every washing machine (and all other major domestic appliances) at Miele. Microprocessors, sophisticated circuitry and application-specific software form the basis for such innovations as programmes for hand-washable woollens and silks. Electronic controls have also made great contributions towards reducing water and electricity consumption. Over the past 20 years, consumption of both power and water has been reduced by 70%. Thanks to the Update function which allows new and modified programmes to be downloaded onto an existing machine, Miele washing machines are future-proof - increasing the likelihood that Miele washing machines will continue to satisfy customer requirements far beyond the centenary of the first wooden tub washer.

Continuously setting new standards

Gtersloh. - Laundry care has been a domestic chore since time immemorial. Perhaps this fact was in the back of the minds of Carl Miele and Reinhard Miele when they set about taking the elbow grease out of laundry care more than 100 years ago. Since then, numerous innovations have been inextricably linked to the history of the washing machine at Miele. The age of the fully automatic washing machine, though, only dawned as recently as 1958 and since then Miele has produced precisely 20 million units . Miele's first foray into the world of laundry care came shortly after the company was founded. This first model, launched in 1900, bore great affinity to a butter churn. However, instead of churning cream into butter, the central agitator jostled laundry in soapy water. The agitator in the washing machine rotated in both directions and was equipped with a flyweight to perpetuate motion. The first models were manually powered, but in 1904, electric motors were introduced, initially in combination with a belt drive system. By 1914 the motor had been internalised into the product. Nevertheless, manual drive systems continued to be perfected as electricity was by no means available in all homes. Within just a few years, Miele's range of washing machine models had grown impressively, consisting of 50 variations on 20 basic models by 1913. In the mid-Twenties, Miele washing machines experienced a quantum leap in their development when the first coal- and gas-fired drum washers for commercial use were built. In this case, an electrically driven drum replaced the prior art involving the vertical vat-and-agitator design. The drum washing machine had a larger load capacity, and water could be heated or even brought to the boil in the machine. Gone for ever were the days when hot water had to be bucketed into the tub! 1930 saw the advent of the first domestic models with an all-metal drum, opening up the way for electric heating. From 1938 onwards, the metal casing was enamelled. In the Fifties, washing machines first began to be installed in kitchens, with considerable impact on machine technology and design. The age of the fully automatic washing machine at Miele was finally heralded in by the 'Automatic 505'. From then on, there was no more need to transfer laundry to a separate appliance for spinning. In 1962, Miele presented its first washing machine with single-knob controls. Once selected, the machine's electrical controls determined

wash times, mechanical action, water levels, temperatures, rinse cycles and spin speeds. This innovation served to consolidate Miele's position as market leader. The age of solid-state controls began in earnest in the Seventies when microprocessors were first used in washing machines. This revolution was first presented to the public at Domotechnica in 1978. By this time, Miele was already cashing in on its technological lead with a specialist department devoted to electronic controls at its Gtersloh headquarters. Since then, electronic controls have been the heart and soul of every Miele washing machine, contributing towards perfecting laundry care. Today's washing machines can now cope with all manner of fabrics even expensive woollens and delicate silks. Electronic controls are also an empowering factor in optimising the use of detergent, water and electricity and, in doing so, make a huge contribution to the environment. The proverbial durability of Miele appliances is, in itself, a major contributing factor. And to ensure that washing machine controls always incorporate the latest programmes and parameters, more recent appliances feature Miele's electronic Update function. To mark this special event, Miele has launched a range of campaign models under the title Gala Grande. Alongside the W 4000 series, models from the classic W 3000 range are also available together with matching special-edition tumble dryers from the T 9000 and T 8000 series. The washing machines in this range have a higher spin speed than entry-line models and therefore achieve improved dewatering. The matching tumble dryers are available as either condenser or vented dryers. The campaign is planned to run from April to December 2007.

AllWater washing machine

Environmentally friendly washing

With a view to climate change, the signs of which are becoming increasingly apparent, good husbandry of natural resources is a matter of prime importance. As long as 14 years ago, Miele's launch of the AllWater washing machine represented a major initial step in the right direction. Since its introduction, this machine, designed to run on various types of water, has been constantly updated to incorporate changes to current model ranges. The current W 3841 WPS Allwater is not only characterised by its low water consumption but also by intelligent wash programmes. The main difference on the outside are the two water inlet hoses at the rear of the unit. These hoses can be connected to hot and cold tap water or, optionally, cold water and an alternative water supply. But that is not where the differences stop: more important still is the modern appliance technology and electronic intelligence behind the scenes, together with two separate water inlet systems offering users numerous options. On a hot-water fill, oil, gas or solar energy can be used to preheat the water supply to the machine - whatever is cheapest! If the water heating system is in the direct vicinity of the machine, electricity costs can be cut noticeably. In the 'Cottons' programme, electricity consumption can be cut by 40%. This equates to a reduction in primary energy consumption of around 21% and energy cost savings of 28%. A further reduction to 43 l in the 60C standard 'Cottons' programme is possible by selecting the 'Warm Rinse' option as residual detergent is more reliably removed by warmer water. Other machine control options allow the use of alternative water supplies such as rain or well water. For reasons of hygiene, however, tap water is always used for the last rinse cycle. The use of rain or well water results in considerable savings in expensive drinking water. If, for example, rain water is softer than water from the tap, reduced detergent consumption can be an added benefit. But the environment is not the only beneficiary: the patented honeycomb drum also goes gentle on laundry, perfectly uniting gentle laundry care with protection of the environment. The special honeycomb structure protects garments by creating a thin film of water between the drum and the laundry, allowing the load to slide effortlessly and thereby reducing friction. During spinning, hole penetration and therefore laddering is greatly reduced, thanks to the reduced diameter of the drum perforations. And Miele even has an official endorsement to prove it issued by Germany's leading 'wfk' laundry-research institute. Miele's W 3841 WPS Allwater with its 6 kg load capacity boasts a wide range of programmes and additional functions. Special programmes include 'Automatic', 'Cottons', 'Minimum iron', 'Synthetics', 'Shirts', 'Jeans', 'Outdoor', 'Express', a programme for dark laundry and Miele's tried-and-tested hand-wash programmes for woollens and silks. These programmes are all selected via the main rotary selector switch. Like all Miele machines, the W 3841 WPS Allwater is tested to last a minimum of 20 years. Longevity and build quality, in itself, represents a much underestimated contribution towards an appliance's environmental credentials. And to ensure that a long-lasting machine can participate in technological progress, Miele's has equipped this model with the Update function, allowing new programmes and programme versions to be downloaded at a later date.

Miele Medicwash: The first washing machine for allergy

sufferers Enhanced quality of life Years ago, Miele introduced the Medicair vacuum cleaner, a customised solution to clear the air for allergy sufferers when doing the housework. For the W 2585 WPS Medicwash, Miele has designed a special allergen-

reducing rinse process which ensures thorough removal of all traces of detergent residue. In the Cottons, Minimum iron and Delicates programmes, the Medicwash has three rinse cycles, compared to the two offered by a conventional washing machine. The 'Rinse Plus' additional function pushbutton enables selection of a fourth rinse cycle; a user-programmable fifth rinse is available in the Cottons, Hygiene and Minimum iron programmes, if required.

Top choice (not only) for allergy sufferers

Top choice (not only) for allergy sufferers The AllerVac Sensor vacuum cleaner, the AllerWash washing machine and the AllerDry tumble dryer, all from Miele, are designed to meet the needs of allergy sufferers, as the design of these appliances is based on an extensive survey conducted by the DAAB, the German Allergy and Asthma Association. This 'family' of appliances guarantees clean floors and clean air and offers washing and drying programmes which make allergy sufferers' lives a lot easier. The machines

help to keep away substances from allergy sufferers which trigger off allergies, such as pollen, dustmites, pet hairs, fungal spores and detergent residue. The Miele AllerVac Sensor vacuum cleaner based on the S 4 compact vacuum cleaner fulfils the most important requirements which allergy sufferers demand of a vacuum cleaner: The appliance cleans floors thoroughly, filters dust and keeps it in the dustbag, displays cleaning performance, and the soil which has been picked up can be hygienically disposed of together with the dustbag. The good cleaning performance is achieved by a powerful motor with a maximum output of 1800 W. In order to ensure that floor covering actually is clean, the AllerVac Sensor vacuum cleaner features the 'Allergotec' hygiene sensor which visualises cleaning progress. The heart and soul of the sensor is a small metal plate which senses soil particles and evaluates them using an integrated microprocessor. This microprocessor draws conclusions as to the amount of dust on floor coverings from the frequency and intensity of particle impact. This is displayed in the form a three-phase 'traffic light' indicator: A red light means 'regular soil', amber equates to 'low levels of soiling' and green stands for 'hygienically clean', or in other words, virtually free from pollen, dustmite faeces, fungal spores and bacteria. The effectiveness of the Allergotec hygiene sensor has been certified by the Deutsche Montan Technologie GmbH (DMT), a leading air hygiene test institute. Apart from the AllerVac Sensor vacumm cleaner featuring the Active HEPA filter as standard, the appliance as a whole fulfils the European standard EN 1822 with HEPA 12 classification. This means that the vacuum cleaner is completely dust-tight and does not discharge dust it has picked up to atmosphere again. These optimum dust retention properties and the performance of the Active HEPA filter have been confirmed by independent reports and the AllerVac Sensor vacuum cleaner has also been awarded the 'suitable for allergy sufferers' stamp of approval for air hygiene from the TV test institute. Dustbags made of five layers of random-spun fibre are ideally suitable for use by allergy sufferers as these bags guarantee that dust stays in the bag. An impact protection foil ensures that any sharp objects do not puncture the dustbag. And the dustbag can be disposed of cleanly as it is sealed automatically when removed from the appliance and can be thrown away with regular domestic refuse.
