Arrival of hurricane season prompts safety provisions
Special to The Sun
Hurricane Sandy did plenty of damage in Voorhees and surrounding towns last fall.
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Voorhees Sun
Hurricane preparation is an
important part of safety provi-
sions, especially after Hurricane
Sandy struck the area last Octo-
ber causing mass devastation.
With the arrival of hurricane
season, the Camden County De-
partment of Public Safety and
county OEM have expanded and
invested in the regional emer-
gency operations center and will
provide residents with prepara-
tion information.
"In this current climate of an-
nual hurricanes and catastrophic
weather events occurring on a
more consistent basis, it is imper-
ative for us to step up and have
the proper resources to combat
the damaging toll these storms
take on our population," county
freeholder Scot McCray said.
The county recently completed
a $40 million project for a new
radio system that allows 37 coun-
ty fire and EMS units and 34 po-
lice departments to interact over
one radio frequency, McCray
said.
According to a county news re-
lease, the 700 MHz radio system
allows up to eight specific chan-
nels for on-scene first responders
to communicate on without in-
terruption.
A GIS mapping software sys-
tem is also included, allowing for

The Retirement Check-In
study found that on aver-
age, Americans nearing re-
tirement report a gap of
nearly $200,000 between
what they have saved, and
what they believe they will
actually need to live com-
fortably in retirement. Ac-
cording to the same survey,
many Americans also lack
confidence about being able
to cover the necessary ex-
penses in retirement such
as housing, food and taxes.
Planning for retirement can
be complicated, but break-
ing it down into simple
steps, as demonstrated in
the new Confident Retire-
ment approach can be a
simple way for those near-
ing - or in - retirement to
begin planning. The ap-
proach takes into account
four fundamental areas:
Covering essentials.
This is the foundation of any
retirement strategy and in-
cludes ongoing necessities
such as food, housing,
taxes and medical ex-
penses. Because economic
conditions may always be a
little uncertain, your goal
should be to fund essential
expenses with sources of
guaranteed or stable in-
come. This may include so-
cial security or a defined
benefit plan, among other
options.
Ensuring your lifestyle.
Most people who are plan-
ning for retirement have ad-
ditional goals they want to
pursue-travelling, hobbies,
and relocation are just a
few. Consider working with
a financial professional to
develop a sustainable strat-
egy that will cover the ex-
penses that come with your
lifestyle goals.
Preparing for the
unexpected.
Unanticipated events can
have a devastating impact
on your retirement plans.
Since they`re no longer
earning a salary, retirees
typically lack the financial
flexibility to make up for con-
sequences to their retire-
ment plan from unexpected
events. Personal liability,
medical expenses, support-
ing a family member and
loss of a spouse are some
of the most common unan-
ticipated events. Developing
a game plan to navigate
these bumps in the road that
may occur during your re-
tirement is important.
Leaving a legacy.
After accounting for essen-
tial, life, and unexpected ex-
penses, it`s time to create a
legacy plan for any of your
remaining assets. Having a
plan in place for your loved
ones and the causes that
are important to you is an
essential part of planning for
the future. To be effective in
your legacy plans, aim to
maintain control and lever-
age as you age. The poten-
tial for some types of
impairment increases during
retirement, so in order to
help ensure that your assets
are used according to your
wishes, consider having
these three documents pre-
pared: a healthcare direc-
tive, living will, and limited
financial power of attorney.
Also make sure your benefi-
ciary designations are up to
date and that you`ve begin
putting an estate plan in
place.
The Confident Retirement
approach developed by
Ameriprise Financial uses
the four principles outlined
above as a framework to
help advisors and their
clients work towards their
retirement goals. It`s never
too early - or too late - to
start preparing for retire-
ment. Consider working with
a financial professional to
define and work toward your
unique retirement goals.

vestable assets of at least $100,000 (including employer retirement plans, but not real estate) and are planning to retire at some point. The survey was commissioned by
Ameriprise Financial, Inc. and conducted via telephone interviews by Koski research from October 31- November 14, 2012.

Head Smart Program
rewards cyclists who
wear their helmets
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Voorhees Sun
In its 10th year, the Head Smart
Program hosted by the Voorhees
Police Department will continue
rewarding children who wear hel-
mets while riding bikes,
rollerblades or scooters.
According to the Insurance In-
stitute for Highway Safety a na-
tional nonprofit scientific and ed-
ucational organization that is ded-
icated to reducing the number of
deaths, injuries and property
damage from crashes more than
90 percent of bicyclists who were
killed in 2008 reportedly werent
wearing a helmet. Deaths of bicy-
clists 16 and older increased 91
percent since 1975 and 13 percent
of all bicyclists who died in an ac-
cident in 2008 were under 16.
State law requires all children
under 16 to wear a helmet while
riding a bike.
When a Voorhees police officer
spots children wearing a helmet,
they receive a coupon for a free
slice of pizza from Passariellos
Pizzeria & Italian Eatery, water
ice from Dianes Italian Water Ices
or miniature golf from Pleasant
Valley Mini Golf, Police Chief Lou
Bordi said. Wearing a helmet and
understanding the safety tech-
niques involved in riding a bike
are important factors in saving
lives, Bordi said.
Its hard to put a number on
that, he said.

events and natural resources that are
available in New Jersey's 39 state parks, 11
forests, 35 historic sites and 121 wildlife
management areas.
While some sustained damage from Su-
perstorm Sandy, all of our state parks,
forests, historic sites and wildlife manage-
ment areas were reopened shortly after
the storm.
Last year, state parks had 19 million vis-
itors.
Our parks offer opportunities to experi-

MAYORS MESSAGE
I
ts easy to forget that youth sports
are about having fun, staying ac-
tive and building character in
kids. With all the emphasis society
puts on winning whether it be on the
sports field, in the classroom, at work
or in social situations the goals of
youth sports often get lost in the shuf-
fle, hiding behind that key word:
Win!
Even more so in recent years, it
seems, high school sports have some-
how drifted away from the youth
label and become a highly competitive
training ground for future profession-
al athletes. This emphasis on succeed-
ing on the scoreboard is purely nega-
tive when it is the only focus, when its
a win-at-all-costs mentality, and
when it crosses the line.
A few weeks ago, The New Jersey
Interscholastic Athletic Association
the non-profit organization that over-
sees 425 accredited public, private and
parochial high schools in the state rep-
resenting high school athletics
passed new rules aimed at curbing
trash talking that attacks others based
on race, ethnicity and sexual orienta-
tion. Its a new rule that piggybacks on
the states recently-enacted anti-bully-
ing law.
Steve Goodell, an attorney for the
NJSIAA, said: Trash talking, were
not banning that. Were saying that
race-baiting, attacking ones race or
ethnicity, thats out of bounds.
And Steven Timko, the executive di-
rector of the NJSIAA, said: Obscene
gestures, profanity or unduly provoca-
tive language or action toward offi-
cials, opponents or spectators wont be
tolerated in the classroom or the field
of play.
Sounds simple and straightforward
enough: Being unsportsmanlike wont
be tolerated. But the announcement of
the rules received some backlash from
people asking when the policing, when
the Big Brother mentality, will finally
end. To that, we say, are you kid-
ding?
Its beyond us how anyone could
argue that promoting sportsmanship,
at any level youth, amateur or even
professional would be a bad thing. If
the NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, NCAA or
MLS passed an official rule like this,
the move would, and should, be ap-
plauded, not criticized. So lets get
real. Lets focus on whats important
here building character in our kids.
Take that trash talking elsewhere
Ban on some youth sports trash talking is a good idea

What do you think about the NJSIAAs
new rule, and about sportsmanship in
youth sports nowadays? Let your voice
be heard through a letter to the editor.

Freeholders need your help to

keep County clean and green
In an effort to en-
gage residents and
make Camden
County a better
place to live the
Freeholder Board
instituted an inter-
active program
through our De-
partment of Public
Works to address
areas of concern throughout our
400 miles of roadway. It has al-
ways been the case that residents
are our best eyes on roadways
and we, as a collective Board,
want to address weeds, potholes,
trash and line striping in our
roadway network from the
Delaware River to the County
line.
Right now residents will be
able to go to www.Camden-
County.com or dial our Highway
Department at (856) 566-2980 to
report an issue. Within a short
period of time DPW personnel
will come out to the identified
areas to address the issue. Trash
will be cleaned up through a
combination of seasonal employ-
ment and the Corrections De-
partments Roadway Program,
in which the Warden has the
ability to put non-violent offend-
ers to work cleaning our road-
ways.
This program is dependent on
us, County government, and res-
idents working together to iden-
tify areas in need of
improvements. As a Board we
are always looking at ways to cre-
ate more access and engagement
with the public. These specific
features provide a direct connect
to a department with a core mis-
sion of keeping cars on the roads
and our region moving.
As a Freeholder, I believe it is
imperative to offer our services
through digital formats so I urge
residents to use so-
cial media to con-
tact DPW for this
program as well.
You can follow
Camden County on
Facebook and Twit-
ter and we will re-
spond to the same
requests for pot-
holes, overgrowth,
crosswalk striping and trash
along our highway system.
Additionally, if you identify
concerns on a non-county road
we will ensure that your request
gets to the proper municipality
or the New Jersey Department
of Transportation. This tool is a
one-stop shop where residents
can have questions answered and
problems solved.
I am confident this program
will improve our roadways,
curbs and crosswalks across the
228-square-miles of Camden
County. Furthermore, these tan-
gible enhancements will im-
prove our neighborhoods and
provide cleaner surroundings
that will create dividends for our
quality of life and our long-term
future as a region.
These interactive constituent
features are in addition to mil-
lions of dollars worth of invest-
ments Camden County is
making into our overall infra-
structure this construction sea-
son. We understand that
continuing to maintain our re-
sources and assets makes this re-
gion second to none.
If you have any questions
about this new program or the
DPW department call my office
at (856) 225-5305 or email me at

County suggests residents watch
news to keep updated on storms
an accurate dispatch as well as
military grade encryption to
eliminate and monitor criminal
hacking.
This in itself will give our
first responders the ability to co-
ordinate, like they never could
before, during a hurricane or any
other dangerous event. This
radio system will also give our
public safety officials unprece-
dented intelligence before a re-
sponse is crafted to any situation
through content sharing and in-
teroperability over one radio net-
work," McCray said.
It is also important for resi-
dents and business owners to be
prepared for a natural disaster.
According to county freehold-
ers spokesman Dan Keashen, the
county OEM has a list of ways
for business owners, residents
and even pet owners to prepare.
Business owners should col-
lect important records and store
them in a watertight container in
a safe location; create a photo or
video inventory and place it in a
safe location; designate specific
staff members for post-storm re-
covery; create a location to meet
during storm-like conditions;
and make sure insurance policies
are up-to-date.
They should also assume com-
munication lines or banking op-
tions would be down and should
prepare in advance.
Residents should prepare with
disaster supplies and stock up on
batteries, flashlights, rope, tarp,
plastic bags and appropriate
clothing.
Residents should also make
sure they have nonperishable
items in case of a power outage,
drinking water, medication for
all family members, first aid kits,
a battery operated radio, toi-
letries and cash.
The county OEM also suggests
residents watch the news when a
storm approaches and protect
their homes when advised by
local authorities, develop a fami-
ly communications plan in case
of separation and keep car gas
tanks half full at all times
throughout the season.
Pet owners should find out
which shelters are pet friendly;
make sure they have a pet carrier
and two weeks worth of their
pets medication; prepare a
weeks worth of food and water;
take a photo of their pet before
they leave home; pack pet neces-
sities such as a litter pan and lit-
ter, pads, towels, doggie trash
bags and bathing supplies; make
sure all identification, vaccine
and medical information is on
hand; and prepare for anxiety.
If residents or business own-
ers are unsure of how to prepare,
the county has information read-
ily available.
We always review plans for
shelters, evacuation routes and
outreach to businesses, residents
and long-term care facilities. We
house Red Cross representatives
during large weather events, rep-
resentatives of the state OEM
and coordinate with municipal
OEM personnel," McCray said.

to prepare, visit www.camden-
county.com/public-safety/office-
emergency-management.

Giving children prizes to wear
helmets is not the only safety pro-
gram Voorhees offers to students
and adults. The Voorhees Town-
ship Board of Education offers
bike safety programs through the
Community Education and Recre-
ation program, which teaches
children about proper hand sig-
nals, bike officers and their equip-
ment, the locations of township-
wide bike paths and more, Bordi
said.
According to Bordi, the pro-
gram was formed to not only en-
courage children to carry out safe-
ty practices while riding around
town, but to develop a relation-
ship between the community and
police. The program has been
around for so long, the children
run up to officers to get a coupon
for wearing a helmet, he said.
We give out a lot every year,
Bordi said, adding parents re-
spond positively toward the pro-
gram.
In the future, and with access to
more resources, Bordi said he
hopes to add something new to the
program, or even find more ways
to promote helmet safety while
making the community comfort-
able with the presence of police.
Its a program that increases
safety, community and is a public
relations position [for the police
department], he said. We are
proud of it and it makes sense.

More Information
Cross County Connection
a nonprofit organization that
provides solutions to trans-
portation problems, including
pedestrian and bicycle safety,
in the southern New Jersey
Region offered the following
safety tips:
Helmets should sit on the
top of your head in a level po-
sition and chinstraps should
be buckled securely.
Parents should make sure
their childs helmet fits prop-
erly.
Bikes, scooters, skate-
boards and others should be
inspected before children go
out for a ride.
Learn the rules of the
road turn signals, traffic
safety and how to ride proper-
ly.
If riding at night, children
and adults should have reflec-
tive gear both on the bike and
helmet, a white light on the
front and red light on the
back of the bike and wear
light colored clothing.
