LETS TALK ABOUT FOOD...

Having enough to eat everyday is important for all of us and particularly for our kids. The reality in this community is that regular access to food can be a real effortparticularly in households struggling with poverty. In 2011, Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes launched its Food is Fuel Kids Campaign a fund-raising effort that focuses attention on the special needs of low-income children and their families during the summer months. This campaign highlights the challenges faced by thousands of area households when school meals are suspended and the broader world is on vacation mode. Food is Fuel recognizes that our kids need access to healthy foodit is essential to their development and to our communitys well-being now and in the future. The Michigan Department of Education provides meals at 23 sites across Kalamazoo County during a six-week period between June and August. Recognizing that food can be extra tight during the summer, we encourage participation in the summer meal program and heighten our efforts to let folks know about the full range of food assistance programs available through KLF and other local agencies.

A $1 donation to Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes can provide breakfast, lunch and dinner to a child or adult in need.

In August 2012, more than 12,000 people received food through our Grocery Pantry Programincluding more than 5,000 children.

Community Hunger Awareness Month

ugust 2013 will be publicly recognized as Community Hunger Awareness Month in Kalamazoo County by county and city officials. The proclamation will call upon residents, agencies, faith groups, businesses and others to acknowledge food insecurity in our community. Stay tuned to www.kzoolf.org for a list of clear action items you can take to help reduce hunger in our area.

Over the summer, dozens of volunteers have re-packaged more than 20,000 lbs. of bulk rice and pasta in our Clean Room.

In the spring, we began a broader community conversation about food insecurity with a public screening of the documentary, A Place at the Table. We have a copy of the film available should you wish to schedule a viewing with your group. To keep this conversation going, we are inviting you to participate in Community Hunger Awareness Montha public recognition during August 2013. Only by working together can we shed light on the harsh realities and hopeful solutions of hunger in our community.

ST. ANDREW CHURCH: SMALL GARDEN, BIG DREAMS

On the surface, St. Andrew Community Churchs quaint garden is merely two small plant beds. But for Pastor Jim Dyke and his collection of dedicated volunteers, the gardening effort is sure to yield much more than the soon-to-sprout onions, peppers and tomatoes they recently plantedit is about cultivating relationships with those accessing the supplemental food available at the church. The garden makes the connection a little bit more personal for everyone involved, Dyke said. We think there is a need for it. People love it when we have fresh food to offer. As a part of KLFs Mobile Food Initiative, the church, which is located at the corner of Covington and Sprinkle road, offers a variety of food items during the early morning the third Saturday of every month. For Dyke and his base of volunteers, their task expands beyond fighting hungerthey are also aspiring to deliver a message of hope with the intention of strengthening the bonds of the surrounding community. We challenge ourselves to do this with as much love as we possibly can without any judgement, Dyke said. We need to keep working on always being joyful and generous. And that generosity has often times extended beyond food, ranging from other forms of personal donations to getting to know the people they serve on a first-name basis through genuine conversation. The two raised beds that symbolize this pursuit of a stronger society sit in the middle of a much larger plot of grass that stretches behind the church. It appears as though, just like the community around it, there is always room to grow.
