Eugene Lovelock, president@neill-wycik.ca I came in to Neill-Wycik as many have before me as a student at Ryerson Polytechnic in the Fall of 1992. With my proof of O.S.A.P funding, and proof of enrollment in hand I went to the Housing Office , and filled out my Neill-Wycik Application for Housing. I have never looked back since. My field of study was the Diploma In Arts Program - a three year Certificate Program. After move in during August of 1992; I quickly discovered the facilities that interested me most. The Photo Lab, and the Woodshop. After attending my first Social Activity Meeting in early September of 1992; I became the Facility Manager for the PhotoLab. Since that time I have always been involved in volunteering with in the building. Neill-Wycik has ingrained in me the sense of Co-Operative values that I stand by today. I remember reading in the first Neill-Wycik Owners Manual a chart of what the Cooperative stood for: The Principles of Co-operation Neill-Wycik is a community, not just a place to keep your stuff. As such, we have a set of guidelines - called principles we strive to follow. They help us keep things in focus. You must be a full-time student to be accepted into Neill-Wycik and we try to achieve a 50-50 male to female ratio. Apart from those guidelines, anyone can become a member, regardless of social, political, ethnic or religious affiliations.

Any rent increase or major policy change must be passed at a general meeting open to all mbers. If you have a criticism, or suggestion, you can express it at a board meeting, to the staff, or at a general meeting. Neill-Wycik doesn't take sides on the political spectrum. We will not make donations to one political party (unlike many private organizations). Nor will we become involved in political movements for change not directly related to housing. We do, however, respect any member's activities in these areas.

APOLITICAL

A CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT

Neill-Wycik is not just a student bedroom. By bringing a group of people together from around the world, and supplying them with private and communal space, we hope to teach the art of co-operation. By offering educational facilities and seminars in Current issues, we hope to teach them skills and ideas they wouldn't be exposed to in your average highrise. By providing opportunities for volunteering and for working (starting a computer facility, working in the hotel, exhibiting art, or being on the board) we hope to create an environment where our members can develop personal skills while contributing to their residential community. We take in a certain amount of money from rents and the hotel and spend it on maintenance, staff salaries or other expenses. Anything left goes into our reserves. There is no person or group of people who benefit if we have a surplus; we all share in our financial successes and failures. The moment I read this - Neill-Wycik became more than just a place with affordable rents. Ever since my first year living at Neill-Wycik I have always done my best to make a realdifference in our Community. I was an active member on the Social Activity Committee from1993 until 1998, and since that time I have been involved with the Steamer since just before its renovation in 1999. There has never been a period where I was either on a Committee,

While at Niell-Wychik I hope to I love that that Neill-Wycik has been able to provide cades and would like to see it continue to be a place students are proud to live. To aid Neill-Wycik in making a plan to pay down its mortgage faster while still being able to mak renovations. Its important to me that the mortgage is paid down because it will save the co-operative (and students) thousands of dollars in interest that can be redirected into updating the building and keeping rent at its minimum, saving students as much money as possible. I also aspire to get involved with the rising social

Ive been a Wycik member for almost 15 years. During that time, I have worked on Maintenance and at the front desk, have been an R.A., managed the woodshop and served on several Boards over the years. All of this Gives me a good understanding of where our Co-op has been, and where we are on the path to.. My interest in serving on the Board is to help make Neill-Wycik more member-oriented as it was historically until recently - and to reinstate the recently-reduced wide range of MCP opportunities to members. I want to help the Board and operations return to a state of integrity and transparency; to bring Neill-Wycik back to a state of involvement, and responsibility, we can keep housing charges low!

eryone pitches in, we keep costs to a minimum, and as a result, housing charges remain low. Without member involvement, housing charges will continue to rise needlessly, and we

As newly elected board member, who has served as a board member at large for one year at Ryerson University's CESAR, I will advocate for the members, act on and solve problems such as communication that exists within our organization. I propose forming a communication committee; as we have done so in the past; to conduct research, plan, deno-web based communication platform. I am passionate about improving communications as it is a factor for good governance within the membership governance also requires those involved to follow table, inclusive, participatory, consensus oriented, responsive, transparent, accountable to the member whom the board serves. I am a problem solver who continues to overcome failures succeeding throughout life. One of the most memorable failures I overcame during my tion over time, by my swim teachers and reinforced by my mom, was a major factor on how i learned how to swim safely. In addition to this I was awarded swimmer and coach of the year a number of times. At the same time i was employed as a volunteer swim instructor and/or lifeguard at the YMCA. Brandon Arkinson, I am a passionate and caring individual who aspires to make positive change in society, starting with the student population at Neill Wycik. I have previously served as the President of Neill Wycik Cooperative and am currently a sitting Director and the CHFT delegate for the building. I am happy to share a smile with any member of the cooperative and hope to make Neill Wycik a better place to live. Neill Wycik is the largest student cooperative in the province, and I serve to represent the student population and their needs. I hope that the cooperative will focus on the

to decision making. I will continue to empower serving agendas. I strive to make Neill Wycik a better place to live for all students and young professionals. I will continue to promote Neill Wycik, and the cooperative values that are foundational to the buildings existence. Remembering always; "A strong Neill Wycik depends on strong residents.

Hello Neill Wycik! I am a fourth year Marketing Major at Ryerson, and Ive lived in the building for 3 years. In my spare time, I enjoy relaxing in the sun, playing or listening to music, and the small things (feels nice eh?), or locating a lost $5 bill in my pants pocket (I know I had it all along, BUT IT STILL FEELS NEW DANG IT) I want to be on the Board of Directors because I want to make change that members appreciate. My opinion on building matters will always and forever be the opinion of the collective membership. I always put the members' interests at the forefront of my mind when engaging in Board discussion and

South Korean Sharing Dinner

by Valerie Tardif
Sharing a unit with students coming from all over the world also means learning about new Korean girl who decided to share with us some insides concerning the typical Korean food. In order to celebrate the Korean New Year, we gathered altogether and enjoyed a Tteokgyk, and need to be soaked in water for several minutes before adding them to the soup. In order to prepare this Korean taste soup broth, she boiled anchovy in water for a little while and took However, it turned out to be delicious. We also had the pleasure to eat, as our main dish, a mix of steamed chicken, Dangmen noodles and vegetables called Zzimdak. She added a kind of very tiny but long mushrooms I had never seen in my life, called Enoki. I was really surprised when I saw her making tones of little holes in the raw chicken with a fork. Apparently, the Korean do this in order to let the chicken absorb the sauce even more deeply, which it a really great idea!! so much about the country. What amazed me the most is that each New Year celebration, every Korean gets a year older in addition to their birthday. I wonder how old I would be in Korean age!!! Nevertheless, if one thing is certain is that the food was Macitda!!

Spring sushi
By Camille Lam
AMC building on the corner of Dundas and Yonge, called SpringSushi, is great. First of all, I was blown away by this place. Not only was it an all you can eat sushi restaurant, but it also combined great food with the use of the us at a table and give us an iPad on which we would pick what and how many we wanted of rolls would be served to us without waiting too long. Because of this, service was fast and Everything was fresh, Nd the menu had a big such as ice cream and even tiramisu, which was really good. As said, it was an all you can eat. If the price would be compared to other all you can eat sushi, it would be a bit more expensive, howonly downfall was the amount of time it took us to get our bill at the end. Other than that, i was pleasantly surprised and amazed by this modern looking and tech-savvy restaurant. along with many vegetable options, as so passion for breads, especially the most famously known, naan bread, was promoted in the appetizers and was provided to each

Cinema Reviews
Warm Bodies
By Amber Moores
Myself and a few of my roommates decided to make use of the $5 Tuesday movie deal at Carlton Cinemas. Knowing little about the movie, we decided to see Warm Bodies. and love, if youre into that kind of thing. Personally, Im not a fan of the whole Zombie Apocalypse theme but this movie made the cut. It was hilariously cheesy in a way you can only understand by seeing it for yourself. Its certainly not a movie that you need to see on the big screen but for a corny, clever, hilarious, and interesting movie Warm Bodies is a winner.

Silver Linings Playbook

Silver Linings Playbook was advertised as a RomCom. I thought I knew what that stood for equal parts romance, equal parts comedy. Ok, there was a bit of Romance in a strange, were totally lost on me. Drama would probably be more appropriate (but probably wouldnt lead follows to solidly messed up people (Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper) as they try and how the romance ends, its still a bit of a sad story that includes as much hardship as happiness I guess thats because its so oddly similar to real life (an aspect most romance movies seem to sidestep). guments I can only assume they would include a handful of valuable items being thrown across the room and shattered during temper tantrums similar to the ones Lawrence so beautifully depicted throughout the movie.

Jumanji (2014)

Comic book movies seem to be getting way popular nowadays. Personally, I never liked the like a super hero in any shape or form? Its based on a police scientist named Barry Allen, who has an unfortunate accident when a lightning bolt strikes a tray of chemicals near him that totally soaks him from head to toe, and gives him the ability torun really fast? Sounds....exciting.

Jurassic Park IV (2014)

How cool is this? Pretty much the only movie worth watching about dinosaurs and it comes back in a 4th take. Who knows, maybe the good ol dinosaurs will learn how to swim, and well have a king kong movie all over again. Dr. Alan Grant must be saying Aw s**t, not again.

Voivod

by Eric du Preez
My prediction came true. One of my favorite bands of all time have released what I can conhardly begun, I will state it is among the best releases of 2013! I've stated before that there is the world of their new CD, Target Earth. I placed my order on Amazon, ready for the release date back in January ... During my paNo discipline whatsoever. I listened to the entire album, some songs more than 3 times. I'd like to think that some things are positively addicting. For me it's music. I'll leave any historical perspective of Voivod up to those interested in checking them out. If you like technically structured, harmonically intense, dissonant yet melodic, lyrically provocyou don't. get Earth laborious, even alienating in its prog meanderings and long running time..." To this I answer that she doesn't get Voivod. What she calls prog meanderings, I call progressive exploration. Anyway, back to Earth. My favourite tracks include the pre-release track shared on Youtube, "Mechanical Mind" (one of the longer tracks, and super technical), Empathy for the Enemy, and 'Kluskap O'com (also in French. I don't know how many years I'd wished for that to happen. My French is pretty limited, but it doesn't prevent me from enjoying the sonic ecstasy of this song. bine a trip to Quebec to coincide with a concert date; their home-turf fans are simply nuts! (I mean that most endearingly). I almost forgot to mention what I didn't like about the new CD.

My work is concerned with the subject of decay and ruin, and how the ruin is constantly changing, evolving and disintegrating. I am interested in the transient quality of the buildings that I have chosen to paint. My subject is Camp 30, the only existing World War II German P.O.W. site still standing in Canada located in my hometown of Bowmanville Ontario. Over the years the buildings have been many things, including my elementary school one year while our original elementary school was under renovations. I have memories here, yet my fascination with it goes beyond that. Its also about preservation, and the needlessness of vandalism. Domination

You're surrounded by the things you made. So much of the world is man-made. Towering above you are the skyscrapers of Hong Kong. Buildings keep getting taller and taller and taller. It's amazing to see how far we've come and how advanced our technologies have become. However, there are always drawbacks sky in the midst of arising towers. Instead of seeing most of the sky by looking straight up, you can see the sky by observing the facades ness of the ground plane. Man is hidden in the shadows cast by these tall skyscrapers. We should consider the limitations of man's great creations.

by Dylan Lewis
Scattered and few are the men of the west. All the while with no food or rest. A man was shot in the head. It happened before he was dead. So quickly he ate, All the food on his plate, And then he fell down dead.

To unite them as one, to win the day, To avenge and make victorious, their dead. And just before almost all was lost, A man there came from the North. He gave them strength and hope to expend, Against the foes in whose lands they crossed. With tears in their eyes they charged forth, Following this man; their king and friend.

In days long past when moonbeams danced and the music formed constellations of the long dead fathers told us the sky was the limit. We broke that reaching Reaching for the mother who guards our dreams. And now we build boxes of concrete and metal our towers of Babelrooted deep in the ground but still reaching. Reaching to the undiscovered heavens. Missing, and yet we never give up hope. We invent our own music now and constellations fade in the neon glow but she still shines. Weak moonbeams dancing and we have been there. And we will reach Reach towards a brighter future. Space is there and we will climb it.
