A Naval Academy professor recently received a grant from the National Science Foundation to continue research that could lead to a model for predicting tornado activity in the U.S. Oceanography Professor Brad Barretts research was also published in the most recent edition of Geophysical Research Letters, a leading scientific journal in the meteorological, oceanography, and geosciences communities. There is currently no ability to predict tornado activity with statistical confidence beyond five or six days. To be able to do that would be useful for emergency planners in areas potentially affected by large-scale weather events such as tornadoes, said Barrett.

The Defense Department furlough period will impact operations on the Naval Academy Yard from now until the furloughs end Sept. 30. The furlough period began July 8.

Beginning July 22, the Naval Academy will undergo a week-long cyber security inspection conducted by Fleet Cyber Command to assess the security of the academys network and cyber operations.

Register your children, ages 5-10, for co-ed soccer from July 29 through Aug. 28 at the Billy the Kid Youth Center, 126 Alder Road, NSA Annapolis. The marina rents boats and offers sailing lessons from mid-May to early September. Successful completion earns a B qualification card. Lessons cost $220 per person and must be booked by reservation. This course is available to authorized MWR customers, ages 16 or older. Call now to be put on the waiting list. The Marina also offers kayaking instructions and tours with certified American Canoe Association Instructors and rents canoes and kayaks from May to September.
