HASKELL INDIAN NATIONS UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC SUPPORT CENTER Tommaney Library COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY

Teacher Curriculum Collection Purpose: In order for the library to carry out the mission, vision and program objectives of the School of Education as they relate to collection development, the following policies have been developed. Goal: To provide support materials in a variety of formats to support Haskells School of Education Elementary Teacher Education programs mission and vision. Objectives: 1. Provide support to professional teacher education students of Haskell Indian Nations University. 2. Provide educational materials of the highest quality produced for children from preschool to sixth grade. 3. Provide Native American literature and resources which accurately represent the indigenous peoples of North America. 4. Provide materials which support coursework to meet requirements of education degree and its state credentials. 5. Include instructional materials on an average of public school from preschool to sixth grade Clientele: Provide support to professional teacher education students of Haskell Indian Nations University.

Supporting Documents: Part of the philosophy of collection development, the Teacher Education Collection supports the following statements from the American Library Association. Library Bill of Rights Intellectual Freedom Statement Librarians Code of Ethics Freedom to Read Statement

Specific Scope of Material: The School of Education and the Academic Support Center listed materials of interest for the foundations for the program. Educational foundations Educational Philosophy Developmental Education Instructional Strategies Brain Learning Developmental Psychology Classroom Management Bilingual Instruction Motivational Strategies Assessments Instructional Technology Curriculum development Exceptional content and strategies

Classroom content material for instruction within the content areas will be: Math Language Arts Science Social Studies Art Music Physical education

Classroom materials related specifically to Kansas accreditation and student teaching assignments: Local Kansas materials General fiction and nonfiction supporting the Core Standards in all content areas

Material specific to instruction to tribal students includes: Bilingual tribal fiction and nonfiction Instructional materials in specific tribal languages Tribal content, fiction and nonfiction Biographies and autobiographies

Juvenile books to include: Books accurately portraying indigenous peoples of North America Books inaccurately portraying indigenous peoples of North America will be retained for historical representation in Childrens Literature Award winners, honor books Other examples of literatures Biographies and autobiographies Ready reference materials

Inclusion and Diversity: Collection materials reflect diversity and represent the not only North American indigenous people, but all cultures in the fullness of their humanity. Selection Criteria: 1. Relevant to mission, programs, curricula, users 2. Aesthetic, literary, or social value 3. Format and vocabulary for School of Education and elementary students 4. Realistically represents pluralistic society 5. Authority competent, reliable author, source 6. Stimulates creativity or is thought provoking 7. Technical quality with adequate documentation 8. Representative of differing viewpoints 9. Presents accurate information 10. Timeliness

11. Cost, value, special features 12. Inclusion in recognized bibliographies, indices, and curriculum syllabi reading lists Subscriptions: The Teacher Education collection will be supported with education-related resources in paper and electronic subscriptions. Gifts: Gifts and donations to the library are accepted only when they add strength to the collection and with the understanding that any such gifts will have no restrictions placed on their use or on their disposal. Gifts frequently require more time to screen, organize, catalog, and process than new materials. A letter o acknowledgement may be sent to the donor, but no monetary evaluation will be made. Recommendations for Purchase: Students and employees may make recommendations or suggestions for additions to the collection directly to the Circulation Desk or through their representative on the Library Advisory Board. These suggestions will be forwarded to the librarian and / or the Director for consideration. These will be considered ads outlined in the Selection Policy and Collection Development Policy.
