Florida International Universitys Architecture + The Arts Theatre Presents The Alternative Theatre Festival
-Sizzling Summer of Programs by the Hottest Star Alumni, Student & Faculty TalentMIAMI July 12, 2013 Florida International Universitys College of Architecture + the Arts (CARTA) Department of Theatre is proud to announce its 7th Annual Summer Alternative Theatre Festival (www.theatre.fiu.edu), which will take place through August 10, 2013. All performances will take place at the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center, Black Box Theatre located on the FIU main campus at 10910 SW 17th Street Miami, Fl. To view a complete list of all the Alternative Theatre Festival plays, please visit www.LivetheArts.com. The FIU Theatre offers playwrights and actors from all over the world, including FIU alumni, the chance to produce, develop and star in both classic and original pieces live onstage. Each year the festival features a dynamic student directed piece, faculty directed piece and a development piece. This is a great opportunity for the community to experience provocative and exciting theatre pieces that will showcase world class talent and alumni who are successfully working in theatre, film and television, as actors, writers, directors and producers, said CARTA Dean, Brian Schriner. Kenny Finkles new play A Thousand Years, will be this summers development piece, directed by Michael Yawney, FIU Theatres dramaturge, who researches and develops new works. Finkle will be attending rehearsals and will see his piece fully realized for the first time with a full production, off book, from July 25 through August 3, in the Black Box Theatre of the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center. FIU Theatres ability to produce and develop pieces creates a laboratory situation where we are able to work on things that may or may not function, says Micheal Yawney. This enables us to hone and perfect our art through experimentation and the expansion of our creative horizons. FIU Theatres main effort and challenge this summer, as first producers, is to create a unique model for developing and producing plays that will inspire other theatres across the nation to adopt their production model of bringing the script to life; just as last years play As the Globe Warms, by Heather Woodbury, went on perform at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, CA and Vortex Repertory Company in Austin, TX after first being staged and developed at last years Alternative Theatre Festival. A major highlight of this summers festival will be the return of David Mamets famous play, Glengarry Glenn Ross. Having performed in the play 11 years ago, Ivan Lopez, who owns his own Theatre Company and is an adjunct professor at FIUs Theatre department, reunited the original eight member

cast and director, FIU professor Wayne Robinson, to reprise their roles for this years festival. The cast consists of FIU alumni who are successful actors, some of them based in South Florida and some in California. The show will be performed August 9 through August 10 in the Black Box Theatre of the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center, at 8:00 PM. This is the first time that the entire cast of a play consists of alumni, said Marina Pareja, the Alternative Theatre Festivals faculty director and production manager. But we always hope to have alumni involved in one way or anotherwhether it is acting, designing or directing. Other pieces at this summers festival include, the Bachelorette and Reverse Psychology, both of which have been previously staged. The Bachelorette, sees recent FIU graduate and prospective grad student, Stephanie Sandoval, take the directors chair and oversee the entire production. In addition, Faculty director Marina Pareja will direct Reverse Psychology as she heads and designs at the FIU Theatre Costume Shop.
