Importance and Role of PM

Windfarm Projects are Complex Commercially Driven Projects Role of PM is key Interface & Stakeholder Management People Deliver Projects

Case Study 1 The Millennium Dome

The UK Government White Elephant
Constructed to celebrate the Millennium Completed on schedule for opening ceremony 31st December 1999 Initial estimate 250m Final cost 750m and 2 Government minister resignations Visitor numbers only 50% of forecast Closed after 1 year and redundant until reopened as O2 Arena

Lessons Learned
Meeting fixed schedules can cost a lot of money Scope M anagement and definition of the scope and WBS has to be undertaken as early as possible Massive failure of stakeholder management

Case Study 2 New Signage System For Dublin

Inner and outer orbital routes
Design & launched by Dublin Corporation 10% of the signs erected Key stakeholder, Transport Minister Seamus Brennan not managed. Plans published 22 August Project halted by Minister 28 August. Expected cost of failed project: in excess of 10,000s

Lesson Learned
Identify key stakeholders. Ignore them at your peril

Case Study 3 - Heathrow Terminal 5

20 years i n the m aking first design mil esto ne - 1989 Construction phase started in 2002 18 ma jor pr ojects 4.3 B illion Bu dget 260 h ectares , 60 Aircraft Stands, C on trol Towe r - 87m .. Over 5km of road & water tu nnels. On ti me & on budg et best pra ctice project

Lessons Learned includes

People ar e the most impor tant part of any project m ajority of issues were people not technology

27th March 2008 - Chaos

Avoid Big Bang launches if at all possible; trial days had 2,000; opening day 40,000 passengers If it can go wrong, it will who was m anaging the risk log? Wer e staff, baggage handling, security & car parks on it?
