Thank you for choosing to study at NZLC Auckland. This is your Student Handbook to help you learn about the facilities and services that we offer here at NZLC and much more. A full version of this Student Handbook is available at Reception on level two if you would like any further information. You should have received TWO packs: Student Handbook (for you to read and keep) Admission Form ( for you to complete and return to us) Please let us know if any of the above documents are missing, as it is important that you receive them all. Please start completing the Personal Details section on the last page of the Admission Form now. The Declarations section will need to be completed and signed after our orientation presentation. SCHOOL RULES GENERAL RULES:


1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. Speak English at all times. Attend all your classes (refer page 5 for further attendance rules). Come to your classes on time. Students who are more than 15 minutes late must wait until the next break before entering the class. Do not leave any valuable items in the classroom, such as mobile, money or passport etc. Put your rubbish into the bins provided. Clean the kitchens after use. No smoking in the building (including toilets, fire exits, lifts, and foyer). Be polite and tidy at all times. Switch off mobile phones during class. Do not take food or drink into the classrooms. Inform the school when you change your address. You are not permitted to transfer or sell your course weeks to another student/person.

Note: On Fridays there is no afternoon class for adult learners. However, students enrolled in our Young Learner Program have classes on Friday afternoons. The schools are open all year except on weekends and public holidays

Important: The usual weekly tuition rates apply for weeks where the above dates fall. No refunds or time in lieu will apply for public holidays falling within the week of tuition.

Students are expected to attend 100% of their courses. Please note that your attendance is marked per session and collated/recorded at the end of each week. If you are going to be absent from a class or session, you must inform the NZLC School. If you are absent from the NZLC School for 3 days or more, you must provide a medical certificate. If you have a valid excuse for your absences, eg: a doctors certificate, this will be taken into consideration should you receive a warning letter. Please note, if you are regularly absent or late to class, or disruptive in class, you may be asked to show cause in writing to the NZLC Principal as to why your enrolment should not be terminated. If your current attendance falls below 90%, the NZLC School Student Services team will send you a first warning letter. You will be asked to acknowledge your responsibility to improve your current attendance. If your current attendance falls below 85%, the NZLC School Student Services team will send you a second warning letter. You will be reminded about your previous acknowledgement of your responsibility to improve your current attendance without success. You will be asked to explain. You will then be monitored by the NZLC team regarding your attendance, until we are satisfied there is improvement. The NZLC School will inform your agent/parent/guardian of the current situation, and the consequence in the event your current attendance falls lower. During this phase, if you miss 20% of your classes in one week, you will be asked to show cause in writing to the Principal as to why your enrolment should not be terminated. If your current attendance falls below 80%, the NZLC School Student Services team will send you a third warning letter, asking you to show cause in writing to the Principal as to why your enrolment should not be terminated. The NZLC Principal will consider your explanation, and prepare a written response to your last known address in New Zealand. Even if your explanation is accepted, because you are under 80%, you are not eligible to receive an NZLC Graduation Certificate or a final report. Should your enrolment be terminated, you will be asked to leave immediately, without entitlement to a refund, deferral or Graduation Certificate. In addition, NZLC will report all student visa holders to the New Zealand Immigration Service about the situation. Similarly, NZLC will notify your agent/parent/guardian of the decision. You are entitled to check your attendance whilst you are studying at NZLC. Please see the NZLC School Student Service team. If you require an official NZLC Attendance Certificate, please see the NZLC School Student Services team.

TEXTBOOK & MATERIALS


NZLC Textbook Rental Fee Policy: GE / IELTS / EBP / Pre-Cambridge: Textbooks are provided for the students use in class for a $100 textbook deposit. This deposit will be refunded upon the return of the textbook at the end of the course in an acceptable / satisfactory condition. Please go to reception with your receipt and textbook. Please return the textbook on your graduation week. We may not be able to refund any fees if you do not return the textbook on time.

You can still return the book on Monday and Tuesday in the following week if you miss the opportunity on Thursday and Friday. However if you fail to return the book after Tuesday of the week following your graduation, you are not entitled to get a refund for the book. Other course books/material fees (for purchase): These books/materials fee need to be paid by the student at the time of enrolling in the course (in addition to tuition fees). Each student will receive their own text book to keep. Cambridge FCE / CAE ($100) TOEFL, TESOL, TECSOL ($100)

EXTENDING YOUR COURSE


To extend your course, you MUST complete the below procedure 2 weeks prior (6 8 weeks prior for visa extension) to your original course finishing date. Procedure 1. Talk to our Student Services Team 2. Complete a NZLC Enrolment form with full payment 3. Please apply for a visa/permit according to your course extension if necessary. If you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to come to see our Student Services Team.

REQUESTING A HOLIDAY (during your course)


You are able to have 1 week holiday per every 12 weeks of full-time study and up to 4 weeks holiday per year of full-time study without penalty. When you take a holiday and it is approved, this time will be added on to your finishing dates (full weeks only). Holidays must be taken in complete weeks and approved in advance by the NZLC School. To request a holiday, complete a Holiday Application Form and hand it to the reception 4 weeks before you want to take your holiday. If you do not tell us 4 weeks in advance, you may not be given credit towards your course. If you are going to be away from homestay please talk to the Accommodation Coordinator about this.

NZLC CITYLINK Conditions


Please complete a NZLC CITYLINK form during your first week. If you do not yet know your flight preference, you need to let the NZLC Enrolment Officer know at least 4 weeks before your departure date. This option must be nominated at the time of the initial enrolment. A minimum of four weeks prior booking is required to arrange air tickets. Additional changes to flights will incur an additional school administration fee of NZ$150 and any additional charges from the airline company. NZLC reserves the right to cancel courses which do not meet our minimum student requirements.

ACTIVITIES
Information about FREE and PAID week-day and PAID weekend activities is posted around the school. If you have any questions, please ask Student Services Team. If you want to join a weekend activity, please pay the Accounts team in the Accounts Department by Thursday afternoon and attend a weekend activity meeting on Tuesday or Wednesday at 3.15pm in the Student Lounge. If you are interested in any other activities or have any suggestions, please talk to the Student Services Team.

INTERNET & Wi-Fi


We have internet facilities available for current student use. The use of this is free and it is available within school hours, but not during class time. Please do not eat or drink around the computers, and please do not turn the computers off. Ask at Reception for the Wi-Fi password.

CANCELLATION / WITHDRAWAL
NZLC Refund Policy 1. Courses less than five weeks: students who withdraw within the first two days of the course will be entitled to a refund of 50% on the tuition fee. 2. Courses of five weeks or more but less than three months: students who withdraw within the first five days of the course will be entitled to a refund of 75% on the tuition fee. 3. Courses of three months or more: students who withdraw within the first 10 working days of the course (the course/s listed on each NZLC Enrolment Form) will be entitled to be refunded in full less a deduction for costs incurred by NZLC, up to a maximum of 25% of the fee paid. Please note multiple courses under one enrolment form are treated as one enrolment and terms and conditions of NZLC Refund Policy applies. FEE PROTECTION
NZLC Fee Protection NZLC Schools operate the following arrangement to protect student fees: all student fees are transferred directly to an independent Trust Account (as specified on the students invoice). Fees are released to the school by the Trustee on a draw down basis as the students course is provided by the school.

NZLC GRIEVANCE & COMPLAINT PROCEDURES (Dispute Resolution)


1. If you have a complaint about any part of your study and additional services received, please discuss the matter with your teacher or NZLC School Student Services Advisor. If it is a serious matter he or she will help you to put your concerns in writing (complaint form). The written complaint will be sent to the relevant department e.g. Academic, Homestay. The NZLC School Head of Department will take whatever action he or she considers appropriate and will report back in writing to your Advisor. Your Advisor will meet with you to discuss this response and to find out if you are satisfied with what has been done. If you remain unsatisfied your complaint will be referred to the NZLC School Principal. If necessary, you may be asked to discuss the matter in a meeting with the NZLC School Principal. You may bring a support person to this meeting. The management will prepare a written reply. If you are not satisfied with the outcome or the response from the NZLC School Principal, you can refer to the grievance procedure established by the International Education Appeal Authority.

Please note that a signed NZLC Enrolment Form constitutes a contract between the student and NZLC Ltd. Therefore all Grievance & Complaint matters need to be directed in the first place to NZLC as per the above procedure.

HEALTH & SAFETY PROCEDURES


The school always tries to guarantee your safety while in the school. Here are some practical guidelines: If you feel unwell: Speak to Reception or the Student Services Team. We have a First Aid kit that can be used for small medical problems. For more serious problems, we can contact a doctor for you. Please note: International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand. (Contact the school Registrar for insurance prices and the school can arrange this for you.) If you feel harassed: In New Zealand it is illegal to harass other people. If anyone harasses you, please contact an NZLC Student Service Team members or any member of Team immediately. If there is a fire / natural disaster: There is a Team member assigned to each floor who will direct evacuation in the unlikely event of a fire, earthquake, or other natural disaster. To ensure quick evacuations, the school holds practice evacuations. During these evacuations, please follow the team members instructions quickly and calmly: When you hear the alarm siren, make your way to the nearest emergency exit. The school always tries to guarantee your safety while in the school. Here are some practical guidelines: 1. 2. 3. If you hear the fire alarm quickly exit the building. DO NOT bring your belongings with you. Use the internal stairs. DO NOT use the elevators in an evacuation. Move onto the footpaths in front of the buildings. DO NOT stand in front of the entrance.

LIVING IN NEW ZEALAND


SAFETY Do not carry large sums of cash If you lose your wallet or any of your property, contact the police and fill out a report If youre walking late at night it is good to walk with a friend. Ask an NZLC team member or homestay family about areas of town which are not so good to walk through at night DOCTOR If you need a doctor and you dont know one, please see us. We know good doctors who can help, and some of them can speak your language. RELATIONSHIPS AND FAMILY PLANNING Many students start relationships in New Zealand. If you need advice about family planning or want to avoid pregnancy, contact the Family Planning Association. They are very helpful and have contacts with overseas communities who can help with translation if you need it. CASH & PERSONAL BELONGINGS DO NOT carry a lot of cash around with you as there is a danger of it being taken from you. Look after your bag and personal belongings (wallet, mobile phone etc.) at all times. DO NOT even leave them behind in the classrooms! GAMBLING

NZLC does not support gambling. Many kinds of gambling are illegal in NZ. But even legal gambling can cause you problems. If you find yourself in gambling difficulties, speak to any NZLC team member we will help!

DRIVING Driving in New Zealand might be very different from driving in your country. If you are going to get a driving license in New Zealand, please ask the NZLC team for advice and books to help you. New Zealand also has a very strict drunk driving law. Do NOT drive after consuming alcohol. DRINKING In New Zealand you must be 18 years old to buy Alcohol. You must also be able to prove your age with acceptable photo I.D. This means your Passport, New Zealand Drivers License, or HANZ18 plus card. Photocopies are not acceptable. It is also illegal to drink alcohol in most public places such as on most streets, parks, and beaches. SMOKING In New Zealand smoking in most public places is prohibited (including the school building). Smoking in all restaurants and bars is prohibited.
