Delhi student allegedly gang-raped in moving car, thrown onto road

Reported by Tanima Biswas, Edited by Prasad Sanyal | Updated: April 17, 2013 22:55 IST New Delhi: A teen girl in Delhi has alleged that she was gang-raped this morning after she was forced to get into a moving car while she was walking to school. The police says that she claims that a person known to her was among the three assaulters. She was allegedly raped by two men while the third stood outside. She told the police she was thrown later from a car onto the roadside in Sarojini Nagar in South Delhi. Before pushing her out, the men reportedly warned her not to report the attack. Medical tests are being conducted on the student to determine if she was raped. Police says a case has been registered under sections 376 (gang-rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation). They've also arrested one person and are searching for the other two accused. In December, the fatal gang-rape of a young woman on a moving bus in Delhi pierced India's conscience and triggered large protests which led eventually to the introduction of new and tougher laws to punish crimes against women. More police officers are meant to be patrolling the streets of Delhi, often described as "the rape capital of India."

10-Year-Old Girl Dies In Hospital Days After Reported Gang Rape In India
Posted: 06/26/2013 12:15 pm EDT | Updated: 06/26/2013 12:15 pm EDT A 10-year-old girl who reportedly was gang-raped in India last week succumbed to an unspecified ailment at a Mumbai hospital Tuesday night. The child was admitted to the facility in Navi Mumbai with nausea and a high fever several days after the June 16 assault, NDTV reports. Authorities are investigating whether the girl died of injuries relating to the rape or if an unrelated illness -- possibly meningitis -- was the cause. According to local reports, four teenage boys between the ages of 14 and 16 gang-raped the young girl after luring her to a secluded location. The girl was rushed to the local hospital after she collapsed on June 20. Though the 10-yearold was unconscious during her time in the hospital, she reportedly described the assault to a friend before she was admitted. The friend relayed the account to the girl's parents. "The girl had told her mother that she was experiencing pain in her private parts, but did not reveal that she had been raped. Her ordeal came to light when she was hospitalized," Fatehsingh Patil, a police commissioner in Navi Mumbai, told the Mumbai Mirror. "We have registered a case and are questioning the suspects." As the Hindustan Times notes, one of the boys in question is believed to have previously raped the girl on a separate occasion. The horrific incident is the latest in a string of sexual assaults that have been reported in India recently. Just last week, a 13-year-old in eastern Mumbai was raped by an 18-year-old, with whom she was in a relationship, and two other men. Following the widely publicized death of a 23-year-old student who was raped by a group of men on a moving bus in New Delhi in late 2012, many in the country have pressed the government to take a harsher stance against sexual violence. A new law that stiffens punishments in sexual violence cases was enacted in March, prompting praise from women's groups.

Delhi gang-rape case nears final stage

NEW DELHI, July 13, 2013 The trial in the December 2012 gang-rape case has reached the penultimate stage with the designated court here having completed recording of the statements of two of the four accused. On conclusion of the recording of statement by the four accused, which is likely to be over next week, the court will begin hearing final arguments before pronouncing the judgment. The judgment is likely to come next month. Meanwhile, the Juvenile Justice Board has reserved for July 25 its verdict on the juvenile delinquent in the case. The trial proceedings against one of the accused in the case, Ram Singh, have abated after he committed suicide at the Tihar Central jail here during the trial. On Friday, one of the accused, Akshay Thakur, in his statement before Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna completely denied that that he had sexually assaulted the 23-year-old physiotherapy student in the moving bus. He said that he had only heard about this incident. He said that he was not present in Delhi on December 16, when the woman was bestially raped, as he had left for his village a day before. He also denied the prosecutions allegation that the victim had named him as an accused in her written statement. Terming the victims statement a fabrication by the Delhi Police, he claimed that he had been falsely implicated in the case. The Court will begin recording Vinay Sharmas statement this coming Monday and thereafter record Pawan Guptas statement. The statement of the third accused, Mukesh, has already been recorded. Though Mukesh admitted driving the bus in which the woman was raped, he denied that he was involved in the crime. Mukesh is the brother of Ram Singh. The woman had been raped and brutalised and her male companion assaulted, while defending her, in a moving bus late on December 16 last. A fortnight after the incident, the woman had succumbed to her injuries at a hospital in Singapore.
