2. Creating an invoicing system with OpenOffice.org
If you run a business, finding an efficient system for managing
invoices is critical for sustaining a positive cash flow. Here’s how
you can create an easy invoicing solution using OpenOffice.org
Writer and Calc.

3. KVM vs. VMware: A Case Study
The rapid maturation of KVM, or ‘kernelbased
virtual machine’, over the course of the last couple of
years constituted the first opensource challenge to
VMware. Integrated into the Linux kernel, KVM
provides featurerich and highly efficient
virtualization.
My colleagues and I tested KVM (running on an
Ubuntu 8.04 host) and ‘barebones’ VMware ESX
server over the last several weeks. Ultimately, we
decided KVM was a better fit for our needs.

4. LVM made easy
Imagine you had a magic knife that would allow you to slice a
loaf of bread and spread some butter on the slices. There's
nothing magical about that, is there? Now imagine this knife
will let you join the bread slices together again or make them
thinner without affecting the butter. This is exactly what a
technology called Logical Volume Manger (LVM) enables
you to do. The loaf is your disk, the slices are the disk
partitions, the butter is any filesystem and LVM is the magic
knife.

5. Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger: New Features in Postgres 8.4
Looking for a mature, open source database that’s not owned by
Oracle? Whether you’re already a fan or are looking for alternatives,
now might be a good time to take a look PostgreSQL. The latest
release of Postgres has a slew of builtin features that allow you to
improve both performance and systems administration. Learn how you
take advantage of them.

6. Audacity: The Versatile Audio Tool for Everyone
Audacity is used for all sorts of audio tasks. There may be more specialized
applications in each category, but Audacity does a great job. If you have
anything to do with audio, this program deserves to be in your toolbox.
And Audacity is not only free of cost, it is opensource software. Among other
things, this means it will always be free of cost. It also means that if the current development team
lose interest in the project, others are able to take it up. Audacity will be there for you in the future.
Your investment in learning the program will not go to waste.

7. Linux Foundation relaunches Linux.com
Earlier this year the Linux Foundation took over control of Linux.com, which had previously been
maintained by SourceForge. This week the Linux Foundation unveiled the new face of Linux.com.
The new site features blog posts, forums, a list of popular Linux distributions, complete with
download links, and news and information about software, hardware, and other topics of interest to
the Linux community. The site is the product of input from community members who submitted and
voted on ideas at IdeaForge.

8. Wall Street Opens Doors to Open Source Technologies
With the financial meltdown eroding IT budgets, large
investment banks, hedge funds and other financial institutions
have been forced to rethink their attitudes toward open source
technology. Use of open source technology is quietly booming
in the capital markets because of increased cost pressures, and
analysts predict the current economic conditions will drive
further industry adoption.
