Staffordshire Surge Vs Manchester Titans
Staffordshire Surge Vs Manchester Titans
GameDay 8
Welcome to our second gameday magazine and today we welcome the 6-2 Manchester Titans to Surge Field for what should be a great afternoon of American football. In our last game against Lincolnshire Bombers we were victorious 4214 in what was a very hot day with our bumper crowd which we hope to have again for the Titans game. Last time out against the Titans we lost 12-38 so hopefully we can get a little closer to our opponents today and get the W on the board. We had a huge success with our first game day magazine over 260+ views so we have decided to try another for todays game and then hopefully next season we will have a magazine for every game we play and who knows hopefully at some point we might one day have magazines available to purchase on game day, but for now we are still on the internet and we hope you enjoy our magazine and we welcome all feedback, details of how to get in touch with us are inside the magazine. A massive thank you to everyone who took the time to download the magazine and read it, means a lot to us.

In todays magazine we are going to focus on both the field of play and the officials.
So lets take to the field and find out what all the markings mean.
Each team must make 10 yards to get a 1st down, and must make the ball go past (even if its just the tip of the ball) the goalline to score a Touchdown. So what are the lines in the middle they are Hash marks and on the next page we learn more about the Yard Lines and the Hash Marks.
Yard lines Yard lines, at intervals of 5 yards, run parallel to the goal lines and are marked across the field from sideline to sideline. These lines stop 8 inches short of the 6-foot solid border in the NFL. Yard lines give players and fans an idea of how far a team must advance the ball in order to record a first down. As Chapter 3 explains in detail, an offensive team must gain 10 yards in order to post a first down. Consequently, every 10 yards, starting from the goal lines, the field is numbered in multiples of 10. In the NFL, the bottoms of these numbers are placed 12 yards from each sideline. The numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, and one 50-yard line are 2 yards in length. All these lines and numbers are white.
Hash marks Hash marks mark each yard line 70 feet, 9 inches from the sidelines in the NFL. Two sets of hash marks (each hash is 1 yard in length) run parallel to each other down the length of the field and are approximately 1812 feet apart. When the ball carrier is either tackled or pushed out of bounds, the officials return the ball in-bounds to the closest hash mark to where its spotted. Punted balls that go out of bounds are also marked on the nearest hash mark.
So hopefully now you have a better understanding of the field that the Surge will be taking to in the game against the Manchester Titans
The Officials
Now we all know that any sports game can not be played at a decent standard with out the men (or women) in the middle who officiate the game we are playing/watching. Sometimes we hate them sometimes we love them but either way they are an integral part of any sporting event and more so in the game of American football. Here we explain why there are so many out on the field and what there jobs are and what there arm movements are all about.
The officials lineup Referee The referee has general oversight and control of the game. Hes the final authority for the score, for the number of a down in case of a disagreement, and for all rule interpretations when a debate arises among the other officials. Although some players and coaches consider the referee a bad guy, hes the only official who wears a white hat. (All the other officials wear black hats.) The referee announces all penalties and confers with the offending teams captain, explaining the penalty. Before the snap of the ball, he positions himself in the offensive backfield, 10 to 12 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and favours the right side if the quarterback is righthanded (and, of course, the left side if the quarterback is left-handed). The referee also monitors any illegal hits on the quarterback, such as roughing the passer. He follows the quarterback throughout the game and watches for the legality of blocks made near him.
At the end of any down, the referee can request the head linesman and his assistants to bring the yardage chains onto the field to determine whether the ball has reached the necessary line for a new first down. The referee also notifies the head coach when any player is disqualified for unnecessary roughness or unsportsmanlike conduct and tells the coach on whom each penalty is called.
Umpire The umpire is responsible for the legality of the players equipment and for watching all play along the line of scrimmage, the division line between the offensive and defensive players. He makes sure that the offensive team has no more than 11 players on the field prior to the snap of the ball. At the start of a play, he positions himself 4 to 5 yards off the line of scrimmage on the defensive side of the ball. Consequently, if hes not quick on his feet, the umpire is the official most likely to be trampled by oncoming players, especially ball carriers running up the middle. Because hes responsible for monitoring the legality of all contact between the offensive and defensive linemen, this official calls most of the holding penalties. He also assists the referee on decisions involving possession of the ball in close proximity to the line of scrimmage. He records all timeouts, the winner of the coin toss, and all scores, and he makes sure that the offensive linemen dont move downfield illegally on pass plays. Finally, when its raining, the umpire dries the wet ball prior to the snap. Head linesman The head linesman sets up on the side of the field designated by the referee. He straddles the line of scrimmage and watches for encroachment, offside, illegal men downfield, and all the other line-of-scrimmage violations. Hes also responsible for ruling on all out of bounds plays to his side of the field. The linesman is responsible for the chain crew and grabs the chain when measuring for a first down. Hes usually the official who runs in after a play is whistled dead and places his foot to show where forward progress was made by the ball carrier at the end of the play.
Head linesman cont.. He assists the line judge (who stands opposite the head linesman) with illegal motion calls and any illegal shifts or movement by running backs and receivers to his side. Also, during kicks or passes, he checks for illegal use of hands, and he must know who the eligible receivers are prior to every play. Line judge The line judge lines up on the opposite side of the field from the head linesman and serves as an overall helper while being responsible for illegal motion and illegal shifts. He assists the head linesman with offside and encroachment calls. He assists the umpire with holding calls and watching for illegal use of hands on the end of the line, especially during kicks and pass plays. He assists the referee with calls regarding false starts and forward laterals behind the line of scrimmage. He also makes sure that the quarterback hasnt crossed the line of scrimmage prior to throwing a forward pass. On punts, he remains on the line of scrimmage to make sure that none of the ends move downfield prior to the ball being kicked. One of the line judges most important jobs is supervising the timing of the game. If the game clock becomes inoperative, he assumes the official timing on the field. He advises the referee when time has expired at the end of a period. In the NFL, the line judge signals the referee when two minutes remain in a half, stopping the clock for the twominute warning. So hopefully now you have learnt something new about the guys in the black and white today. Please respect them as without them playing there part the Surge would not be playing. We have done a Q&A with a few of the Manchester Titans players to get there take on there team and there season and who you should look out for today. A word from the GM of the Manchester Titans Jon Homer
This year was really always going to be a transitional year for the team with a new management team and coaching staff coming in. Having said that were pleased with the majority of the performances on the field (still in the hunt for the playoffs) and were in a much more stable state behind the scenes with a new Sponsor in Manchester Printers and being involved in lots of PR events at Manchester City, the Rugby League World Cup, etc. Coach Dias is starting to put his mark on the team but its next year hes going to expect the team to really step up and play at the level he expects them to.
Name : Alan Mead Position : QB How many years playing American Football : 14 years (but I took a break for 12 years, including 7 years in California) 7 years with the Titans. What got you into the game : Started watching on Channel 4 in the 80s, joined a Junior Touch Team, progressed to Youth kitted, played for the GB Crusaders in Milwaukee. Joined an Adult team and when they folded in 1995 I just started working so I took a break. When we came back from the States, I figured, Im only 34, Ive still got a couple of years left. How did you hear about the Titans : My wife got a job in Manchester working with one of the original Titan players so I joined them. I think I was 5th String QB at the start of the season but by the playoffs I was starting, and have been here ever since. Best game you have played in for the Titans : Last game of the season last year at home against DC I was 16 of 17 for 5 TDs. And the one incomplete pass was dropped Who is your NFL team : NY Giants Who is your College Team : University of California, Berkeley (Cal) my wife used to work there. If you are not playing American football what else do you do : Maybe referee, maybe coach. Possibly play cricket. But Im sure my wife would say spend more time with the family.
Who do you compare yourself to in American Football : Id love to say Joe Montana or Eli Manning for their play in the clutch but Id probably have to go with Doug Flutie based on stature. What advice would you give a Rookie looking to play American Football : Be patient, learn as much as you can, listen to all the information given to you (and then ignore the BS).
~~~~~ Name : Danny Caballero Position :WR How many years playing American Football : 20+ years (started playing when I was 6 years old) What got you into the game : Growing up in Texas, there was no other option How did you hear about the Titans: I was originally looking for a flag football team as that's what I was playing right before I moved from America to the UK. When I looked up American football in Manchester, I stumbled upon the Titans website. Best game you have played in for the Titans : 2013 Week 4 away vs Shropshire Revolution 5 catches for 41 yards and a TD. Worst game you have played in for the Titans : 2012 away vs DC Presidents Who is your NFL team : Dallas Cowboys Who is your College Team : Texas Longhorns If you are not playing American football what else do you do : play baseball Who do you compare yourself to in American Football : Wes Welker (or any short slot receiver) What advice would you give a Rookie joining the Titans : Play every down as if its your last! ~~~~~
Name : Ainsley Battel Position : DB (corner back) Squad No : 24 How many years playing American Football : I have played 3 years youth, took a break and then this is my 1st year playing senior ball. What got you into the game : I have never really been one to follow crowds and I don't like English football, and American football had always stood out to me. So I found my local team as soon as I could play and never looked back. I have a real bug for the game and love to play it. It isn't just a game or a sport I feel it really reveals your character. Best game you have played in for the Titans : I can't really give a specific game. I try my best in every game I play and would play for a lot longer than an hour if I got chance to. But over all I have enjoyed playing against Shropshire revolution we have had very close games with them this season, losing by a point to them and also just beating them by 3 points. They pushed us to our limit! Who is your NFL team : San Francisco 49ers Who is your College Team : Between Notre Dame, Ole Miss and Oregon. How do you feel the teams season has gone : We have had a good season I'd say. Could have been a little bit better cancelling out two losses, but from a defensive prospective we have done well. What do you hope to see change or improve for next season : I hope I improve as much as I can. I'd like to see more games be played in the league, and hopefully we will see the sport start to turn more professional in this country. Best place you have played : When I played at youth I really liked the facilities at Gateshead. What player should we keep an eye out for from the Titans: Everyone on the team. We all have different strengths and we work well as a team.
~~~~~ Name : Jonathan Pan Gago Position : Running Back Squad No : 36 How many years playing American Football : 3 years, 2 Senior 1 Junior all with the Titans. What got you into the game : I started watching the NFL with a friend then found out there was a local team I thought my physical skill set would be well suited to playing American Football. Best game you have played in for the Titans : 2013 Shropshire at Home, Revenge game for a 1 point loss and I managed to score a TD and get a 2PAT. Worst game you have played in for the Titans : 2012 Sheffield at Home, we played awful football and it ended our playoff hopes. Who is your NFL team : The New England Patriots
Who is your College Team : LSU although I also keep tabs on Boston college and Florida gators. How do you feel the season has gone for both you and the team : The season has gone reasonably well, as we have still got the chance of going to the playoffs, but we also feel we could of beat the 2 teams that have beaten us this year. Personally I've had a good season, I have already matched last years TD total, and I have worked hard on improving myself as a player all round and can see the improvements on tape. What do you hope to see from the team in the 2014 season : I hope that we'll be competing in the Premiership North and try to make the playoffs, if that doesn't happen I expect to be in the National leagues britbowl final. Best place you have played American football at : Our own pitch is of good quality but for all round set up you have to give it to the DC Presidents they have a good set up, up there. Which player should we keep an eye out for in the game from the Titans : Apart from myself, our QB Alan Mead a very good player which I'm sure you already know.
