ROTARY NORMS

WHO MEETS WHERE,WHEN?

MONDAY

The GraceFor Friendship and fellowship, we thank thee Lord; For what we are about to receive, may God make us truly thankful and ever mindful of the needs of others. Amen . The Four Way testOf the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to All Concerned? 3. Will it Build GOODWILL and Better Friendships? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to All Concerned? The Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: 1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; 2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; 3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life; 4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

DG EMMANUEL KATONGOLES MESSAGE My fellow Rotarians, I greet you all and welcome you to D9211. Thank you for believing in me and trusting me with the delicate but important task of getting the District off the ground. I invite you to join me in this historic venture, and together we shall not only create and nurture a highly vibrant District, but we shall also enjoy ourselves in Rotary fun and fellowship along the way.

Let me take this opportunity to appreciate the effort that each one of you has so far put in planning for the year ahead of us. A lot of good work has already been successfully accomplished, thanks to the commitment that you have put in, coupled with a high sense of togetherness and team spirit. The task ahead of us is enormous, a fact that calls for our continued vigilance and determination. We have been fortunate to learn from our great past leaders, and this puts us in a privileged position. Let us make them proud by continuing the work that they have themselves done with diligence. Our theme this year Engage Rotary Change Lives, speaks for itself. Rotary is very much alive and all we need to do is to engage it and we shall change lots of lives that need changing. Our RI President Ron D. Burton asks us in his citation to recognise Rotary clubs for an array of achievements that promote our membership growth, enhance humanitarian service through our Foundation, and strengthen our network through the family of Rotary. By qualifying for the Presidential Citation, clubs contribute to Rotarys strategic goals and multiply the impact of their good work through the collective focus of more than 34,000 Rotary clubs worldwide. I would like to extend my thanks to all those who have offered themselves for service. It is also my prayer that every Rotarian in the District will serve at a given level. Each one of us must be involved in one way or another if we are going to engage Rotary effectively. Every Rotarian must be a member of a committee at the Club level. This way we shall all have an opportunity to serve. This way we shall be able to change lives through an unrivalled multiplier effect. Finally, let me promise that we have an exciting year ahead of us, and I look forward to meeting you all in your Clubs during my visits.

Nigerian businessman donates US $1 million to Polio Eradication
At the Rotary International Convention in Lisbon, Nigerian business leader and philanthropist Sir Emeka Offor announced a $1 million gift to Rotarys PolioPlus program. This contribution will provide funding and support for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in the continued fight to eradicate polio. Offors generous gift is the first million-dollar gift received toward a newly-extended fundraising partnership between Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This collaboration dubbed End Polio Now Make History Today -- could generate up to $525 million towards polio eradication efforts over the next five years. This is Sir Emeka Offors second major contribution to Rotarys polio eradication effort. However Offor has contributed a combined total of more than $ 2.1 million to Rotary in support of the global humanitarian and educational programs. His gifts make him the largest contributor from Africa in Rotarys 108 year history.

British Opthamologist receives top Foundation Alumni Award

Dr. Harminder Singh Dua, an Indian-born ophthalmologist in Nottingham, England, received the 2012 -13 Rotary Foundation Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award at the Rotary International Convention in Lisbon, Portugal, in late June. He was nominated for the award by District 3030 (Maharashtra, India). Dr. Dua, chair and professor of ophthalmology at the University of Nottingham, Queens Medical Centre, has treated patients in the United Kingdom, India, and the United States; and has shared his skills on corneal disorders with students and colleagues around the world. While living in India, Dua performed thousands of free operations on poor patients with cataracts and glaucoma at free eye clinics sponsored by Rotarians and NGOs. More recently, Dua is credited with discovering a previously undetected layer of the human eye that is located at the back of the cornea -- a discovery that was reported in the journal Ophthalmology in May. Called Dua's layer, it is much thinner than a human hair. Its discovery is expected to make corneal transplant surgery safer & simpler, and to contribute to knowledge about diseases affecting that part of the eye.
