By Sean Dalton

CHELSEA Former 52nd District House Representative Pam Byrnes announced today that she is making a return to politics this time vying for U.S. Representative Tim Walbergs 7th congressional district seat. Byrnes last attempt at winning a seat in government involved her run for former State Senator Liz Braters job represent-

ing the 18th District. She lost to Rebekah Warren (D-Ann Arbor) 55-41 percent. Byrnes began building her political career in Washtenaw Byrnes by serving on the Washtenaw County Road Commission and other local governmental bodies and committees before making the plunge into state-level politics as

the winning candidate for District 52 of the state House in the 2004 election. She held onto her seat in 2006 and 2008, which meant that she was term-limited out of the House. Byrnes expressed a desire to continue representing the Michigan public in statelevel politics, which meant she and the voters would have to graduate her to the state Senate, as some

politicians refer to it in the circumstances that she was in. In the interim period between Warrens defeat and now, she has worked as executive director for the University of MichiganShanghai Jiao Ton University Joint Institute a program that fosters collaboration in both education and research between engineering students of both universities. Shanghai Jiao Tong represents itself as one of Chinas premier

universities. Byrnes said Thursday that while she was serving in her capacity at the joint institute creating the structure based on western management styles at the fledgling organization that was created in 2006, she gained a great deal of experience and perspective that she wants to bring to U.S. Congress ideas that she feels are imperative to the well-being of Michigan

CHELSEA Glee Havens achieved her dream before passing away from cancer Sunday morning when she opened Glee Cake & Pastry in November 2011 and in that, she was lucky. Lucky is what many prominent figures in the Chelsea community considered themselves for knowing the 52-year-old executive pastry chef who elevated her craft to a level where words like art and exquisite are not uncommon to hear. She was vivacious, energetic and charismatic shes just a spunky little thing, reflected Lisa Delong, who took over Havens beloved sweets shop. Havens, of Stockbridge, originally came from upstate New York, before pursuing a degree in economics at the State University of New York/ University of Buffalo and studying at the Baltimore Culinary Institute, where she graduated with top honors. Havens trained under famous Austrian Chef Jan Bandula, who worked as a pastry chef at the White House during the administration of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. She served as executive pastry chef at the Omni Hotel & Convention Center the biggest facility in Maryland and cultivated a regional and even inter-

Havens state reputation in the worlds of hospitality and gourmet retail. Delong says she was more than happy to help Havens husband Steve and the Havens family as a whole by handling Glees business in her stead, having herself dealt with the circumstances of having a close loved one contend with and succumb to cancer. In January, I lost my uncle to lung cancer and he was my mentor as a pastry chef, Delong said. So when (the Havens) asked me to help out and told me what the situation was, it wasnt even a question of whether or not I would do it it was, When do you need me to start? Havens was an enthusiastic member of the Chelsea business community, which extended her renown into the broader public community as a whole. In her 2011 business debut article in The Chelsea

fter the start of Youth Dance Theaters upcoming 2013-14 season on Aug. 18, the 16-year-old non-prot ballet company will take on the name Ballet Chelsea for a number of reasons. The change is necessary to more accurately reflect the focus of our organization, says YDT/Ballet Chelsea President Jane Thompson. Youth Dance Theater has grown a

great deal since its start as an adjunct program of a local dance studio. The idea involved offering training and educational opportunities in ballet to kids who were too far away from ballet training and education living in the Chelsea area and western Washtenaw. It was determined at the organizations yearly strategic planning meeting this year that in order to continue to grow, a new name and some new additions to the YDT program were in order, according to Marketing Coordinator Patricia Marsh. One of our goals is to grow our organization in terms of membership, audience and patronage, Marsh said. We also want to offer more performances, so we contacted community leaders
