PERFORMANCE TASK: MEASURING CONTENTS INVESTIGATION OUTPUT BRANDO C. ARCE! ! HIGH 4H ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! MR. ARSENIO S. PINEDA

I. Introduction
In todays society, the purchasing of various goods in the supermarket is an activity widely done by many individuals. In these grocery stores, a lot of merchandise are being sold for use and/or consumption. In particular, one of the rising sales in stores include the selling of bagged chips. These snacks, or as people like to call them munchies, are very famous. People actually go out to buy different brands of it. When it comes to chips, consumers usually invest their money on foreign branded chips such as Lays, Doritos, etc. With this, it is a must that the money being invested by the people is getting enough of what it is worth.
III. Hypothesis
!
If the content found inside a bag of Lays and Doritos is measured by a Digital Balance, then the results will be very close to the stated Net. Wt. of the bag of chips.
ii. Lab Design: Measuring Procedure Step 1: Open one bag of chips (Either Lays or Doritos) Step 2: Pick-up the plastic container and put it on top of the Digital Balance Step 3: Click on the TARE button on the Digital Balance to set it back to zero (even with the container on top) Step 4: Pour the bag of chips onto the plastic container Step 5: Wait for the measuring process to nish and record data Step 6: Clear out the plastic container for the next bag of chips to be weighed
Note: Repeat steps 1-6 for each and every bag of chips. There is a total of 14 bags of chips, 7 of which are Lays and the other 7, Doritos. Therefore, there will be 7 trials for each brand of chips giving a total of 14 trials for both brands.
TRIAL 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
MEASURED IN GRAMS 30.76 +/- 0.01g 30.43 +/- 0.01g 30.75 +/- 0.01g 30.73 +/- 0.01g 30.76 +/- 0.01g 30.75 +/- 0.01g 30.73 +/- 0.01g
MEASURED IN GRAMS 34.23 +/- 0.01g 34.25 +/- 0.01g 34.22 +/- 0.01g 34.23 +/- 0.01g 34.23 +/- 0.01g 34.22 +/- 0.01g 34.27 +/- 0.01g
Clearly, from the presented data in the table, both of these U.S. branded chips contain more than what their actual Net Wt. labels state. For Lays, it states that the content of one bag is 28.3g. However, based on the results of the experiment, there is certainly more than just 28.3g. With the 7 trials for Lays, the total average of the trials measurements is 30.70 +/- 0.27g. This is basically 2.4g more than how much each bag is priced for. Moreover, as for Doritos, it states that each bag is 31.8g. However, just like Lays, there is also more. With the 7 trials for Doritos, the total average of the trials measurements is 34.24 +/- 0.03g. This is roughly 2.44g more than the stated amount of content in one bag. There is a big similarity between the measurement of the extra content found in both brands of chips. Basically, there is an average of 2.4g more in each bag. Note that this is already the computed average. If one would notice, the deviation of the results from a certain trial compared to what is stated in the label is sometimes even larger. This goes to show that the labels are not accurate when it comes to stating the Net Wt. of the content.
VII. Conclusion Generally, the investigator in this project concludes that labels on food merchandise cannot be 100% trusted for accuracy. At times, there is more than what is being purchased from the producer. Towards the consumers, the investigator believes that you will have a great advantage. Financially wise, your money is spent with something more in return. It may not be a huge amount, but still there is more than what is supposed to be received. As for the producers, the investigator highly points out the fact that your side in the situation is not benetting at all. Though you are selling, yes, however, with the extra amount being put in each bag, this could all add up and cause less money to return than what should be. VIII. Recommendation:
As for the consumers, the investigator simply advices to continue purchasing the product. Either way, when consuming it, a small amount wont really matter much. In this case, you even get more than what you are paying for. There is already an incentive as a buyer/consumer. As for the producers or companies who manufacture this product, the investigator highly suggests that you guys nd a more accurate way in sorting your goods into their respective packagings. If this continues, a lot of bags may contain more than usual and adding them up simply like giving away free chips. This is notably bad for any business. Losing the supposed income is not something positive. In addition, for future investigators who will conduct a similar concept of research, the following must be considered; more accurate measuring device (if still possible). More trials will also do good for the project to widen and see more of the data. You can also consider other brands, possibly the local brands, so that one may compared them with the foreign brands; do local brands provide enough, more or possibly less? Citations (Images):
