From the Principal

Semester one reports: some background information We are currently in a bridging phase between teaching and reporting against the Curriculum Framework - Outcomes and Standards (as we have been since 1998) and the new Australian Curriculum. The implementation of Phase 1 (English, Mathematics, History and Science) of the Australian Curriculum (AC) is to be completed by the start of 2015 and reporting by mid 2015. Our teachers have been teaching AC English since 2011, Maths since 2012, and History and Science in some year levels since 2012 and all years from 2013. This semester we will commence reporting against the achievement standards of the Australian Curriculum for English. All other learning areas are being reported against the Outcomes and Standards Framework. As the children are taught more content from the different learning areas of the Australian Curriculum these areas will be reported against with full implementation by mid 2015. Some information to help you understand and discuss with your child this semesters report:

UPCOMING EVENTS Disco Friday 28th July Next Assembly - Leaders Wednesday 3rd July Winter Carnivals Wednesday 3rd July Gil Fraser Soccer & Football Gibson Pk Netball TERM DATES 2013 Term 2 Monday 6th May to Friday 5th July Term 3 Tuesday 23rd July to Friday 27th September Term 4 Wednesday 16th October Thursday 19th December School Development Days 2013 - (Pupil Free) Term 3 Monday 22nd July

A C or satisfactory is the expected standard. Please discuss with your child that they are achieving what is expected if they receive a C or satisfactory. The effort section for each learning area is very important. If your child is consistently placing appropriate effort in to their learning then you can be satisfied they are doing their very best to achieve. This is an important conversation to have with your child as you look at the report together. The comments section of the report is probably the most important area following effort. This is where the teacher will provide detailed information in regards to what your child knows, understands and can do. These comments directly relate to the Australian Curriculum (AC) standards in English and the Curriculum Framework (CF) outcome statements for all other learning areas. The expectations of the AC standards and the CF outcome statements vary and in different areas are higher than have been expected at different year levels than before and contain different content requirements. This could mean that where your child has received a C grade in the past it may not be equivalent this semester. Your child is on a developmental continuum, they will continue to grow and develop at their own pace, please do not be concerned if your childs report varies from previous reports. This semesters report is a progress report. Teachers are making the judgement that students will achieve (below/at/above) the achievement standard at the end of the year. If your child receives a C this semester it means theyre on track to achieve this standards at the end of the year. The standards are viewed in a holistic manner and are assessed in an ongoing capacity throughout the learning sequence.
If you, or your child, have any questions you are encouraged to arrange a time to meet with your childs teacher to discuss the report and make plans for future learning success. We are all in this together striving to help each child achieve the best results they possibly can whilst having an enjoyable schooling experience.

Last week at Kindy we visited the Library for the first time. It was very exciting! We read books from the stands that were suitable for us and looked at what will happen when we start to borrow books next term with Mrs Downs. Mrs Miller finished off our time with a funny story. We have a new Dolly Hospital in our role play corner this week. It has lots of bandages, X-rays and patients. We will have so much fun in there!

Room 2 - Liz Smith.

Weve been as busy as ever in Pre-primary and this is reflected in the fabulous work on show in the classroom and in art installations around the school. The wonderful autumnal colours have been an inspiration for literacy, maths, art and science activities. Having read Ten Tiny Things by Meg McKinlay (Fremantle Press) and looked at the art by international nature artist Andy Goldsworthy, we have used our environment to find, create, explore, experiment and question the world around us. Finlay & Montanna work together to make a repeating pattern using dead and recently living leaves

Tori, Daniel and Sabah worked together to create a patterned creature.

Ella, Benjamin and Arlo create a natural background for their art they decided to work alone in the same area. Brody, Ella, Christine and Mei work as a team to find art treasures.

Working on a collaborative piece, Charlie discusses her piece of the pattern with Grace and Henry

Room 3 - Bev Lane We have had a wonderful week. Miss Lawrance has been our teacher all week and has done an excellent job. We have learnt about the seasons, when to use full stops, question and exclamation marks, odd and even numbers, adding up and taking away and about things that float and things that sink. Miss Lawrance returns to university next week (for a rest). We have loved having her in our class and appreciated her conscientious and positive attitude. Thank-you Miss Lawrance.

Room 4 - Rochelle Reeves Room 4 has been working hard on our T& E projects over the past two weeks and we have seen some amazing designs so far. Our challenge was to design a classroom of the future.

Our news topic this week was jobs that mum, dad or a grandparent does. We were lucky to have Matt Kronberger join us and tell us about his job as a Graphic Designer. He showed us the work that he does and we were very impressed. Some of us even think we might like to become Graphic Designers.

Room 6 - Chris John

The last two weeks have seen the students of Room 5 move on from reading, analysing and writing newspaper articles to viewing the informative childrens show Behind The News. BTN introduces students to the world of news by translating complex current affairs and world stories into terms they can understand. Our students had to take notes to extract important information before reconstructing it into a paragraph to explain what they had learnt. The stories ranged from the Australian republic debate, gender equality and US spy leaks to the history of popcorn, go-kart champions and the Dalai Lamas visit to Australia.

Room 7 - Monica Parkes/Brent Snook

We have been extremely busy over the last couple of weeks in Room 7. In Maths we have been focussing on negative and positive numbers and how we use them in real life. We have also investigated the rules for adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers. When the students were required to prove and reflect on their learning in their maths journals it was great to see how well they had grasped not only the concept but also the real life applications. This week we started writing a narrative about a refugee to reflect our terms work on immigration. We have read a variety of real life accounts and discussed the journey a refugee takes from leaving home, being in a refugee camp and the resettlement into a new country. Although the students are still in the draft stage of writing, their stories are AMAZING! They have really taken into account the narratives they have read and heard over the term and made a conscious effort to use language to position their reader and create imagery and emotion. I cant wait to read their finished stories! Our Year 7 students have been visiting Richmond P.S. every Thursday this semester and learning Science with Mrs Catherine Morrit from John Curtin College of the Arts and Mrs Reeves. This term we have conducted many experiments and here are some photos of the students working hard.

This will be celebrated at North Fremantle Primary on Tuesday 23rd July. Our school theme this year is; Storytelling - The love of a good yarn. We have Celebrated Author and Illustrator Josie Boyle visiting our school along with other invited guests. Our students will be learning about the importance of storytelling at home and community, and how these stories are passed down through the generations. We will then look at how stories can be created into books and the students will work together using different materials to create their own books. The afternoon will involve the students taking a North Fremantle Swan River walk with Nadwin to learn about the Dreamtime Stories and Aboriginal History of the North Fremantle area. Plan ahead for major train shutdowns

Building the new Fremantle Line tunnel, the first stage of the Perth City Link project, is almost complete. To connect the new tunnel to the Transperth rail network, two train shutdowns are needed in July and August, with the first shutdown occurring during the second week of the July school holidays. These shutdowns will impact all train lines in some way. Journey times will take longer, so teachers, students and parents are encouraged to plan ahead and add at least 45 minutes extra travel time to their journey. Visit www.transperth.wa.gov.au for more information and sign up for the free TravelEasy email service to keep up-to-date on service changes.
