Yogeshwar Nagar is situated in the south of Ahmedabad,Gujarat, India. The landownership of this land is not particularly clear, but the land certainly does not belong to the inhabitants of the site.

Masterplan

Giving structure making sustainable enabling expansion organising new functions on the terraces

Expansion whenever desired reducing traffic Sustainable Easy to realise Low cost Ecological

The people make intensive use of their streets. This may leads to overcrowded streets. Therefore the implementation of roofterraces can be seen as an opportunity. By turning the roof terrace into a public space, the intensity of the streets could be lowered, and the use of space could become more balanced. Additionally turning roof terraces into public spaces seems to be a way of creating more space without sealing further ground.

-If there is no space on the ground, there is always some on top-

Rainwater Collection
(932 mm/year)

Roof Catchments
(existing houses + new plugins = 12000 m2)

The watersystem that is being implemented works as follows: rainwater is collected in wells. These are connected through an underground drainage system. and transport the water to the agricultural land. There it will be used to irrigate bamboo and poplars. Finally the wastewater of the urban site will be used as well resulting in a closed watersystem that provides clean and usable water for the neighbourhood.

Inner Street Final Situation

In order to gain as much open space as possible, we plan to use a novel approach including bamboo structure and push the houses together back to back. Some streets will disappear and the others can be widened.

Role of women Women play an important role in society and the development of new quarters. They stay in the settlement and take care of the children and the house. Since we are going to improve their skills with a workshopsystem they can be selfsuficient and sustainable. They can provide their products by themselves. A good connection to the city supports this system.

The financial system is based upon the theory of Muhammad Yunus. In his ideas, he proposes the use of microcredits. He provides credit to people who are collaborating in a small group of about five persons. Each person still has a personal responsibility, but at the same time, each person has to make sure that the others are taking their responsibility. This type of social control results in a very efficient and trustworthy system. Sometimes, a one floor high space is left open within the structure for the existing house to grow. Above this space, an amenity could be built. It would be part of the new public space that is being proposed for the neighbourhood.

Our variation on this theory is to divide the site into certain larger groups, according to the number of streets. Within the streets, households are also being clustered. First one five-house-cluster will be formed. Then the second one and so on. These smaller groups have to make sure that each household takes their responsibility. On a larger scale all the these clusters in one street have a responsibility according to each other. This results in a pyramid like shape of responsibility.
