DNR official describes impact of pest on ash trees
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR While the emerald ash borer hasnt been detected in Germantown yet, it has been detected in communities nearby. Olivia Witthun, an urban forestry coordinator with the state Department of Natural Resource, explained the impact of the emerald ash borer on ash trees during a July 15 presentation to the Germantown Village Board. According to Witthun, the emerald ash borer is the most destructive and costly forest pest to enter the United States. She cited a report from US Forest Service which indicated the eventual loss of all ash trees can be expected in the near future due to the emerald ash borer. Witthun cited figures from a 2007 village report which showed there were 817 ash trees in street and park areas. She said it is estimated it would cost $375,000 to remove and replace all those trees. She said one out of five ash trees will be lost if they are not treated for emerald ash borer. Witthun said Germantown is about five miles from the nearest known infestation that has been detected. I wouldnt be surprised if its here now and we just havent found out about it yet, Witthun said. She said catastrophic ash die off begins within three

Warhawk Band Boosters Golf Outing set for Aug. 26

The Germantown High School Warhawk Band Boosters will host its 11th Annual Golf Outing on Monday, Aug. 26, at Scenic View Country Club, 4415 Club Drive, Slinger. Sign-in for the popular community event begins at 10 a.m., with a shotgun start following at 11 a.m. Golfers of all ability levels will play 18 holes in a scramble format and enjoy lunch during their round. At 4:30 p.m., participants will gather at the clubhouse for dinner, an awards presentation, raffles, and a performance by the Germantown High School Wall of Sound marching band. Golf, lunch, dinner, drink tickets and entertainment are included in the $80 fee; however, an option to attend the evening dinner and entertainment portion only is available for $25. The registration deadline is Aug. 12. The event is one of the organization's primary fundraising activities, garnering much of the financial support needed to run the high school's band programs for the upcoming year. Funds raised are used to purchase uniforms, equipment, instruments and lockers, as well as provide student musician scholarships to band and leadership camps. Local dentist volunteers for WDA Mission of Mercy

to five years after the emerald ash borer is first detected in a community. She said many communities cannot manage handling the cost of ash die off in existing budgets. According to Witthun, 80 percent of ash trees will die off within the first four year after emerald ash borer is first detected in a community. She explained the pest came to the United States in 2002 from Asia and was first detected in Wisconsin in 2008. She said all true ash trees are at risk from the pest. She said the larvae form of the emerald ash borer burrows under the bark of a tree and into the trees vascular system. Infested trees will die within three to five years. Witthun said the emerald ash borer has spread due to assisted movement by humans. As a result, there are 16 counties which are currently under a quarantine, in which movement of wood from the area is barred. Witthun said the cost for communities come from safely removing ash trees after they die, which has to be done since they become brittle, with removal costs increased by up to 40 percent. Preemptive options can include injections that can save ash trees, which are done for the life of the tree. She said communities are done either to save the tree or keep it alive long enough until it will have to be removed. She said pre-emptive removals along with treatments are the options being pursued in other communities. Witthun said the village is ahead of the curve in knowing how many ash trees is has and where they are, but will need to update other information such as the size and conditions of the trees. In situations where ash trees are removed, she said an effort should be made to replant in those areas. She said no more than 10 percent of one type of tree should be planted in order to prevent a future die off of one type of trees. During questioning by the board, village Parks and Recreation Director Justin Casperson said 20 percent of the trees on village properties are ash trees. Trustee Terri Kaminski asked how much it would cost to treat an ash trees. Witthun said the costs vary widely.

Some 166 organizations and individuals contributed $190,000 in tax-deductible financial and inkind donations to help cover costs associated with dental equipment and facility rental, supplies, pharmaceuticals and food for volunteers and patients. Dr. Stoeckl was totally amazed by the whole event"it was quite a day the number of people volunteering and patients served was mind boggling, but so rewarding". A total of 4,147dental procedures were performed, including 1,450 fillings, 1,846 teeth extracted, 719 cleanings, 32 root
canals and 823 sealant/fluoride treatments. Several dental labs worked with volunteer technicians to create 100 partial dentures. Stoeckl has been practicing dentistry for over 40 years, and has had offices in Germantown since 2001. His office moved last year from Stonewood Drive to Rivercrest Drive He also has been an Associate Professor at Marquette University for over 25 years and still teaches the dental students each week. Germantown Youth Futures Disc Golf Extravaganza set for Aug. 13

The annual Germantown Youth Futures Disc Golf Extravaganza will be held Tuesday, Aug. 13 (rain date is Aug. 20) at Spassland Park. This familyfocused event will feature games, concessions and demonstrations from professional disc golfers. Interested individuals and families should pre-register early to be eligible for golf and prizes. Check-in will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Nine holes take approximately 45 minutes to play. The event costs $3/person (includes hotdog, nachos or drink). Register thru the Germantown Recreation Dept. office at (262) 2504710; first 50 participants will be awarded a players package. Participants can check out a disc free of charge or purchase one on site for $8.

Suspect charged in Richfield park attack

Daniel Jh Bartelt, 19, was charged by the Washington County District Attorneys Office July 18 with first degree recklessly endangering safety, aggravated battery and substantial battery, attempted false imprisonment and disorderly conduct, all while using a dangerous weapon. The charges stem from a July 12 incident at Richfield Historical Park. According to the criminal complaint, a woman reported that she was attacked by an individual with a knife between 10:10 and 10:22 a.m. July 12 in the park, which is located at 4399 Pleasant Hill Road. The woman told police that the suspect tackled her to the ground while he was holding a knife. The woman grabbed a hold of the blade end of the knife and did not let go, as she felt it was life or death situation and ended up struggling with the suspect for approximately a minute, during which time she was able to disarm the suspect and take the knife. The suspect got off the victim and tried to take the knife from her but she held on to it. The victim sought medical treatment and required 15 stitches . When questioned by an investigator, Bartelt initially was unable to provide detail of where he was on July 12. During further questioning, he admitted that he was at the park on July 12 reading a book and drinking a beer when he saw the victim drive into the park. Bartelt said in a spur of the moment decision he took a knife and went to scare the victim. A conviction for first degree recklessly endangering personal safety/use of a dangerous weapon carries a possible sentence of a $25,000 fine, 12 years and six months in prison, or both, with five years that could be added due to use of a dangerous weapon. A conviction for aggravated battery/use of a dangerous weapon carries a possible sentence of a $10,000 fine, six years in prison or both, with a possible four years added due to use of a dangerous weapon. A conviction for substantial battery/use of a dangerous weapon carries a possible sentence of $10,000 fine, three years and six months in prison, or both, with a possible four years added due to use of a dangerous weapon. A conviction for attempted false imprisonment/use of a dangerous weapon carries a possible sentence of a $5,000 fine, three years in prison, or both, with a possible four years added due to use of a dangerous weapon. A conviction for disorderly conduct/use of a dangerous weapon carries a possible sentence of a $1,000 fine, 90 days in jail, or both with a possible six months added due to use of a dangerous weapon. The following report was taken from records at the Germantown Police Department. Battery Two male subjects were taken into custody for disorderly conduct/battery at 9:24 p.m. July 17 following an altercation at a residence in the N11000 block of Brookside Drive. Retail theft A female subject was arrested for retail theft at Fleet Farm, N96 W18200 County Line Rd., at 12:49 a.m. July 18. A male subject was arrested for retail theft at Menards, W186 N9754 Appleton Avenue, at 10:44 a.m. July 18. Theft A male resident reported the theft of his riding lawn mower from his home in the N11000 block of Squire Drive July 16. Warrant A man was transported from the West Milwaukee Police Department to the Germantown Police Department on a Germantown warrant at 5:58 p.m. July 14. He was then taken to the county jail.
Suspect charged with retail theft

A 51-year-old man was charged by the Washington County District Attorneys Office with two counts of retail theft last week. The suspect, David C. Turner of Milwaukee, was arrested at Walmart, W190 N9855 Appleton Ave. July 23. According to the criminal complaint, Turner was observed removing anti-theft devices from two televisions and then attempting to leave the store. Store security stopped the defendant and was escorted to the loss prevention office. Turner initially provided store security with a false identification card. When a police officer arrived, the defendant provided his correct name and admitted attempting to steal the two televisions, which he described as a stupid choice. By Thomas J. Diamond Club U14 team third at USSSA Class B state Championship
Cardinals lead Land OLakes standings

The Sussex Cardinals were on top of the Land O'Lakes baseball West Division standings with two weekends of games left to play. Sussex had a 13-3 record, one game ahead of the Pewaukee Muskies. The Cardinals beat the Menomonee Falls Lakers July 21, 10-8. Sussex will host the Brookfield Blue Sox at 1 p.m. July 28 at Village Park. The Cardinals will finish the regular season against the Brookfield Bulldogs at McCoy Field at 2 p.m. Aug. 3. Menomonee Falls was fourth in the division with a 10-5 record. The Lakers will play a doubleheader July 28, hosting the Pewaukee Muskies at 11:30 a.m. at Trenary Field and then playing the second game at 2:30 p.m. Menomonee Falls will close the season against Merton at 2 p.m. Aug. 3. The Lannon Stonemen are ninth in the division with a 7-9 record. Lannon will host the Brookfield Blue Sox at 2 p.m. Aug. 3 and the West Bend 7 Up at 1 p.m.
