Slave to your gift

Anybody who is ever truly passionate about a field or a specific craft will have to sacrifice a lot in attempts to over-achieve. I often think about the various celebrities and artist, who after attaining great amounts of wealth still work more than ever. I used to feel sorry for them. I then realised that to a degree we all have to be slaves to our gift. Just because somebody has more resources than possibly imaginable to the average person, it does not mean they will want to do anything other than their area of expertise. When a person finds an area of their passion, it is something so compelling that the calling itself energises and helps them to carry on when they have no more vim. Not everybody who works really hard is to be felt sorry for, even if they seem o have it all. Passion creates what some experts call flow, or convergence. This is when a person is 100% engaged with their core area of expertise, using their core gifts and skills to the point that they lose track of everything else but the task at hand.

We have all experienced some level of flow, and those that are known for performing extremely well in any industry are excellent at tapping into flow at will. Everybody from your favourite artist, to politicians. Why do you want to achieve the things you want in life? Is it because you want to make the most of your top gifts, skills, passions and unique personality? Or is it because you want to be able to do nothing? Whatever stops growing, dies.
