PART B : READING COMPREHENSION ( 10 MARKS )
Read the passage below and answer the following question.
I.

It was a wonderful scene for many visitors, young and old at Batu Pahat, Johor, on
August 31, 2012. These people were gathered at the Dataran Batu Pahat to do voluntary servise
as part of the celebration of Merdeka Day.

II.

Batu Pahat town was chosen as its environment was damaged as a result of the recent
floods. The aim activity was to clean up the whole town and beautify it. As this activity
involved teamwork, it became a symbol of ' One Malaysia' concept and helped to create
awareness of the importance of having a clean environment. The organizers hoped that what the
volunteers were going to do would set an example for others throughout the country.

III.

The delighted participants, made up of residents of Batu Pahat town including school
children and teachers. Those who attended included the Minister of Public Affairs and the
District Officer of Batu Pahat, who spoke briefly at the opening ceremony.

IV.

Before starting the voluntary tasks, the participants were briefed by the Head of Town
Council, Encik Kamarul Arifin regarding the various tasks and places to be cleaned and
beautified. He had the crowd in stitches with his detailed instructions of the division of tasks for
the day.

V.

The youngsters were given the task of cleaning the drains around Batu Pahat town.
Encik Kamarul mentioned that flash floods occur due to the clogging of the drains. Most drains
did not flow smoothly because they were clogged by rubbish. Dig out the rubbish from the
drains and collect them in plastics bag. If possible pull out the weeds and grass surrounding the
drains, he added.

VI.

Next, the elderly men can help to paint the famous ancient buildings around town. Also
the main attraction of Batu Pahat town is the Recreation Park needs attention too. Substitute the
old sign boards around the park with new ones. The decoration statues in the park need to be
given a new look. Replace the broken benches around the park. Plant some new plants and also
remember to clean up the small lake are not harmed as they are very rare species.

The next task, according to Encik Kamarul, was to place potted flower plants around the

town and to collect all the rubbish scattered in the surroundings of the town. This can be done
by the ladies and children. As you are doing your task, take care of your children as well. Do
not forget to collect and put the rubbish in separate garbage bags that have been provided. Be
extra careful when your children are picking up broken glass pieces. Encik Kamarul added that
the last task was pack food and drinks for all the participants. This can be done by the elderly
ladies. They need not go and tire themselves out there in the sun! he added jokingly.
VIII.

When the talk was over, the participants got down to work. After a tiring day, the whole

town was given a new refreshing look by the end of the cleaning up and beautification activity.
It was clear from the smiles around, young and old that their beloved town will be free from
flash floods. They needed not to worry if it rained continuously for a few days. Now they also
had the civic consciousness in their minds too keep their town clean. They also felt proud to
have contributed their small part to celebrate Merdeka Day. It was the seed of a speacial slogan
