Lunchtime Recitals at St Marys Cathedral

19 to 24 August 2013 1.10pm

There will be a retiring collection in aid of Cathedral Music.

Monday 19 August, 1.10pm Asher Zaccardelli Viola John Bryden Piano Programme Schumann Adagio and Allegro op.70 Brahms Sonata No.1 in F minor op.120 No.1 Asher Zaccardelli began studying the Viola when he was 8 years old. In 2004 he began studying at St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh. During his time at St Marys he was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. In September 2008 Asher began studying with Garfield Jackson for the duration of his undergraduate degree, graduating in 2012. He has played in solo master-classes with Lawrence Power, Hartmut Rohde, Lars Anders Tomter & Garth Knox and in chamber music master classes with the Endellion, Wihan & Sacconi String Quartets. Asher was the recipient of a Donald Dewar Arts Award throughout the duration of his undergraduate studies. He has never played the violin. John Bryden was born in Edinburgh. He was taught by Mary Moore and gave his first BBC Broadcast at the age of 14. Two years later he was awarded the Greenwood Music Exhibition to Emmanuel College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge he studied with Peter Katin later gaining a Martin Scholarship and studying in Master Classes in Siena with Guido Agosti and in Bonn with Claudio Arrau. John has played all over Britain as a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician appearing several times at The Wigmore Hall and The Purcell Room, in France, Italy, Germany and Austria and on television. He is pianist of the Dartington Trio and specialises in one-composer recitals in which he reads from the letters and newspapers of the time.

He plays the organ and has accompanied services or given recitals in Cathedrals in the UK and abroad, most recently in Dresden and Salzburg. He is much in demand as a teacher and has coached most years at Dartington International Summer School where he also played for Master Classes given by Joan Dickson, Amaryllis Fleming and Jacqueline du Pr. John has made several recordings. He is a member of the staff of St Mary's Music School.

You will have to go a long way to hear finer choral singing than this (International Record Review). Bach before Bed Aug 21-24 22:30 (45mins) 10.00 (8.00) Following last years highly successful before breakfast series, John Bryden returns at the keys of the Cathedrals Steinway for the complete Book II of J.S. Bachs WellTempered Clavier spread over four evenings. Luxuriate in Bachs sublime harmonies - with hot chocolate beforehand.

Tuesday 20 August, 1.10pm The Chalmers Ensemble Lawrence Dunn and Claire Taylor violins Elizabeth Mathison viola Ursula Schlapp cello Catherine Frew bass Pamela Turley clarinet Simon Rennard bassoon Neil Mantle horn Programme Schubert Three movements from Octet in F major Howard Ferguson Octet The Chalmers Ensemble was formed last year and is a successful mix of professional and gifted amateur players. Recent performances have taken place at the National Gallery of Scotland and the Elgar Society. Forthcoming engagements include a St Giles at Six next month. The name Chalmers Ensemble comes from the Edinburgh street where the group hold their rehearsals.

The Choir of St Marys Cathedral A Tribute to Kenneth Leighton Aug 22 2030 (1hr) 12.00 (10.00) (5.00 C) The internationally-renowned Choir of St Marys Cathedral pays homage to composer Kenneth Leighton, who died 25 years ago this August. Join the choir of humans who sing like angels (The Times) in a concert celebrating this remarkable composer.

Wednesday 21 August, 1.10pm Mo Wah Chan Organ Programme Buxtehude (1637-1707) Praeludium in G minor Bux WV 148 J.S. Bach (1685-1750) Trio Sonata in C minor BWV 526 I) Vivace; II) Largo; III) Allegro Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933) Drei Stcke fr Orgel, op.142 I) Stimmen der Nacht; II) Valse mignonne Mirior Ad Wammes (b.1953) Suite No.2, Op.53 Louis Vierne (1870-1937) VI) Toccata Mo Wah was born in Hong Kong. She first came to the United Kingdom in 2005 and studied at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London with David Graham and Margaret Phillips for a Masters Degree in Organ Performance. During her studies, she played in the masterclasses of Dame Gillian Weir, Thomas Trotter, Pieter van Dijk as well as going on study tours in Germany and the Netherlands. Outside her academic commitments, she also gave solo recitals throughout the UK at the RCM, St. Stephen Walbrook, Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church, St. Dominics Priory (for the Annual Festival of New Organ Music) and All Saints Church at High Wycombe. She recently had a duo organ concert with professor David Graham and participated in the Grand Orgue event at Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church. Mo Wah returned to Hong Kong in 2008 and was involved in numerous commitments including solo recitals at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre as well as freelance work, one of which was an organ tutor post for the Music Education Series organized by the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Mo Wah moved to Edinburgh in 2010 where she was the Organ Scholar at St. Marys Cathedral.

Thursday 22 August, 1.10pm The Mademi Clarinet Quartet Programme G. F. Handel adapted by David Schorr Arrival of the Queen of Sheba W. A. Debussy arranged by David Schorr Golliwog's Cake Walk The Mademi Quartet was founded in September 2010 as a result of the union of four young clarinetists from Italian and American Conservatoires and Universities. Eleonora De Lapi, Giulia Magnanego, Silvia Manfredi, and Anna Palumbo have performed all over the world with important Orchestras and Ensembles such as: the Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice, the Symphonica Toscanini", the Giovane Orchestra Genovese, the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Delhi Symphony Orchestra", the "Ciaffero Band" and the "Gruppo Genovese di Musica Antica". The ensembles ever-growing repertoire includes pieces written specifically for clarinet quartet, as well as transcriptions of works of various genres, encompassing different musical styles from the Baroque era to the present.

Friday 23 August, 1.10pm The City of Edinburgh Music School The City of Edinburgh Music School is a unique specialist Music School catering for talented youngsters from the ages of four to nineteen. It is based within Flora Stevenson Primary School and Broughton High School. The Music School is funded by The Scottish Government and does not charge any fees. Both schools have recently opened new purpose built state of the art facilities. Sir Simon Rattle, CBE was so impressed with the young musicians that he agreed to become patron of the School. The intensive training involving regular practice, various ensembles and individual expert tuition from the most talented and dedicated teachers in the land paves the way for its students to secure positions in some of the most prestigious colleges, orchestras and media organisations in the world. The School also has its own trust fund that helps its keen youngsters to attend orchestral, jazz and folk courses, workshops and masterclasses. Their programme this year will feature items on piano, violin, saxophone, recorder and String Quintet. Saturday 24 August, 1.10pm Silviya Mihaylova Piano Programme Chopin (1810-1849) Study op. 10 No.12 - Revolutionary Liszt (1811-1886) Consolation No. 3 Beethoven (1770-1827) Sonata op.27 No. 2 in C sharp minor Moonlight 1. Presto agitato Debussy (1862-1918) Claire de Lune from Suite Bergamasque Scriabin (1872-1915) Nocturne op. 9 No. 2 for the left hand only Bartok (1881-1945) Ostinato from Mikrokosmos Bulgarian pianist, Silviya Mihaylova began lessons aged 10 with Rositza Ivancheva one of Bulgarias most renowned piano teachers, and one year later she was accepted into the National School for Music in Plovdiv. In 2011 she graduated from the RCS with a BMus, studying under Prof. Fali Pavri; in 2012 she obtained her Masters, finishing the two -year course in one year, and has performed in concerts across India, UK, Spain and Bulgaria.
