HMHS students travel to Honduras to help build schools
Special to The Sun
Erica McCaughey, Layla Lopez and Nadeen Watkins are among the volunteers smoothing the cement floor at the Balsamo school.
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Haddonfield Sun
Nine Haddonfield Memorial
High School students went on a
journey to Honduras not knowing
what to expect from the third-
world country and underprivi-
leged children they set out to help.
As a part of Students Helping
Honduras a nonprofit organiza-
tion raising awareness and funds
to provide opportunities for chil-
dren in Honduras volunteers
had a hands-on experience build-
ing schools in rural parts of the
country.
The goal is to build 1,000
schools. So far, there are 12 com-
pletely built. But the organization,
school building and the village
have come a long way, said Chris-
tine Hluchan, trip organizer and
HMHS alumna, class of 2004.
She originally became involved
in the program while attending
Georgetown University and is
now pursuing her Ph.D. in medi-
cine so she can one day open a
medical facility in Honduras.
This is the first time students
from HMHS traveled to Honduras
as part of this program. They
helped mix and pour cement and
haul buckets all by hand to help
complete the 12th school in Bal-
samo.
For most, it was the first time
being out of the country, but it
was an emotional experience for
all.

No, you don't need surgery. You don't need Botox. You don't even need
better make-up - you need FACELIFT Dentures from Dr. Bill Greenberg!
Your teeth support your facial structure. When your dentures aren't
designed to fit your face, you get that collapsed and aged denture look -
jowls, wrinkles, a weak chin, smaller lips and saggy skin.
Facelift Dentures from Dr. Greenberg are custom designed to balance your
bite, support your features and look much more natural and youthful.

Goal is to build
1,000 schools
A lot of these kids have done
services [in this area]. There is a
need, but when you go somewhere
like Honduras its on a different
level, Hluchan said.
According to Hluchan, the eco-
nomic standard in Honduras is
different from the U.S. Hondurans
dont own land and cant drink the
water.
For junior Addison Coryell, it
was her first trip to Honduras and
would not be the last. She has
been out of the country before,
but to more affluent cities in Eu-
rope and China.
I would definitely try to do
more of it. Its a lot of time out of
your own schedule but its re-
warding in the end. Its a sense of
accomplishment helping them
reach their goals when we grew
up with a lot already, she said.
Hluchan said she remembered
what the land looked like on her
first trip, when Students Helping
Honduras set out to build a small
village, Villa Soleada. She said she
helped clear the land for the vil-
lage using a machete.
The organization built 44
homes for 275 people with self-sus-
taining water and sewer systems
and electricity for families who
previously lived in a squatter
community. The villagers were
happy to have running water,
working plumbing and concrete

Haddonfield summer reading
program great for children
Your cover story on the Haddonfield
Public Library childrens summer reading
program in the July 24-30 issue was much
appreciated.
Childrens librarian Dorothy Peppard
does a wonderful job in creating the well-
received summer reading program each
year.
Programs are exciting and Haddonfield
children and their families love the fun ac-
tivities that promote reading and literacy.
The summer reading program continues
until the final program on Aug. 29 at Bor-
ough Hall at 7 p.m.
Your article mentioned the three Early
Literacy computer stations in the chil-
drens department.
The library board and staff are very
proud of the Haddonfield Friends of the
Library, which provided funding for the
three stations and for all of the costs of the
childrens summer programming.
The Friends received the service award
to Friends of the Library group for excep-
tional support to the Haddonfield Public
Library at the state Library Association
Conference on June 4. Phil Shapiro is the
president of the Friends.
Reading is very much alive and well at
the Haddonfield Public Library, especially
in the childrens department.
We now have many more eBooks for
children to round out the adult and teen
eBooks collections.
The Friends contributed to the purchase
of the new 3M Cloud eBooks system avail-
able from www.haddonfieldlibrary.org
with your library card.
The Friends are now gearing up for the
annual book sale on Sept. 21 and 22. The
members-only preview will be held on
Sept. 20. The Friends are seeking volun-
teers to help in many ways up until the
sale. They are also accepting books and
other item donations (in good condition)
until mid-September. For more informa-
tion on volunteering or the book sale visit
www.hfol.org.
Our special thanks to the Haddonfield
Friends of the Library, an exceptional
group.

F
inally, nine months after Super-
storm Sandy touched ground,
New Jerseys economy is gain-
ing momentum.
A report released last week by Wells
Fargo, the states second largest bank
by deposits, says that federal and in-
surance money flowing into the state
to aid in the Sandy recovery started to
pay dividends in the first half of 2013,
and should continue to propel the
economy for the rest of this year.
According to the report, the state
added 4,200 construction jobs from
January to June of this year. The
same time last year, the industry lost
4,500 jobs.
Its a great sign for the state. Gov.
Christie estimated New Jersey suf-
fered $37 billion in damage from the
storm. Approximately 22,000 homes
were left uninhabitable and 325,000
others were significantly damaged.
Now, in the dead of the summer,
with the start of hurricane season ap-
proaching again, construction is heat-
ing up, fueling the states overall eco-
nomic recovery.
The Wells Fargo report wasnt all
peachy, though. While New Jerseys
economy was significantly better in
the first half of this year compared to
last, it still lags behind national aver-
ages. Six percent of all mortgages are
in foreclosure, the second-highest rate
in the country behind only Florida.
Housing prices grew only 2.9 percent
year over year, while the national aver-
age stood at 12.2 percent. New Jerseys
unemployment rate dropped almost a
point in the last year, and that trend is
expected to continue, but it still sits at
8.7 percent compared to the national
average of 7.6 percent.
These stats beg the questions:
Should we compare New Jersey to the
rest of the country? Or should we just
compare the Garden State to itself ?
New Jersey is a very unique state in
that its economy is fueled strongly by
two major metropolitan regions whose
city is in another state. The economy
works differently here. Employment
works differently here. Elections work
differently here. So why, then, if we
are an outlier, must we compare our-
selves to others?
For once, we need to focus on our
own recovery, and ensure we are
adding as many jobs as we can, no
matter what our stats look like com-
pared to every other state.
Recovery finally catching a break
Considerable momentum gained in first half of 2013, report says
Your thoughts
Should we rejoice in the positive outlook
for New Jerseys economy? Or should
we be worried that we lag behind the
rest of the country? Let your voice be
heard through a letter to the editor.

Students hope to
form chapter at HMHS
walls for a home.
The hope is to build a library,
meet the goal of schools built in
rural communities, complete the
girls childrens home to house
state orphans and more.
Its possible. Everything else
that we have done people said
would be impossible, Hluchan
said.
For the students at HMHS, the
next step in the Students Helping
Honduras process is to organize a
chapter at the high school.
Hluchan said chapters started
forming in colleges after the or-
ganization was founded in 2005
and more recently started form-
ing in high schools. But most
chapters do not recognize the
trips as part of the organization.
She said the idea would be to
have a teacher lead the organiza-
tion, go on the trips with the stu-
dents and help form an official
chapter the biggest hurdle in the
process.
Students who went on the trip
are likely to aid in forming a chap-
ter at not only the high school, but
help form a chapter at their col-
lege of choice if one does not
exist.
Even if an official chapter is
not formed in HMHS, students
can create an unofficial chapter
that is not associated with the
school. The goal would then be to
educate the students on the issues
in Honduras, recruit volunteers
and raise money for the trips.
The biggest thing is word of
mouth, Hluchan said, adding
Tracy Matozzo, HMHS dean of
student life, has taken an interest
in seeing an official chapter form
at the high school.
The organizations focus is on
the children of Honduras, provid-
ing them with opportunities that
were not available to them before.
The program is also for the stu-
dent volunteers, opening their
eyes to the problems out of the
states and showing them how
they could make a difference.
Changing the way the [Hon-
duras children and student volun-
teers] look at the world thats the
future of tomorrow, Hluchan
said.
For more information on SHH
and its projects, visit www.ce-
ciskids.org/index.

The Haddonfield Sun
After a lengthy presentation
and discussion, the Haddonfield
Historic Preservation Committee
approved the First Church of
Christ, Scientists application
plans for a grass parking lot.
According to the churchs at-
torney, Jim Burns, the plans have
been structured to attempt to
meet the demands of the sur-
rounding community.
When the church, located at 355
Kings Highway East, purchased
the lot, consolidated properties
and demolished a building, the in-
tent was for it to become a park-
ing lot, Burns said.
In 2011, the commission denied
the plans for the lot since it did
not meet the demands of unifor-
mity in that portion of the his-
toric district.
According to HPC member
Cynthia Byers, its up to commis-
sion members to determine if a
project would fit into the appear-
ance of the area.
The goal of the church is to
try to be a good neighbor, Burns
said.
The lot is expected to hold 22
cars, including two handicap
spaces. The grass would be pro-
tected by a green turf reinforce-
ment to allow the grass to grow
while protecting it from the
weight of cars, said Clif Quay, the
engineer hired by the church to
work on the site plan. The handi-
cap spots would be created with
concrete paving material and
landscaping would be created.
The entrance to the lot will be
set back 20 feet from the property
line, he said.

Crime decreases 31.6
percent from last year
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Haddonfield Sun
Haddonfields crime has de-
creased 31.6 percent from last
year, with 43 fewer offenses, ac-
cording to the states recently re-
leased Uniform Crime Reporting
statistics.
According to Haddonfield Po-
lice Chief John Banning, the de-
partment looks at the numbers
recorded in a five-year period for
long-term adjustments.
The biggest change in the
numbers is in burglaries, which
showed a 71.4 percent decrease,
or 30 offenses, from January to
June 2013, compared to that time
period in 2012.
Its hard to tell what affects
the numbers on a year-to-year
basis, Banning said, as surround-
ing towns also showed a decrease
in crime. Towns such as Haddon
Township experienced a 62.3 per-
cent decrease in overall crime,
59.4 percent (160 to 65) in theft
and 71.2 percent decrease in bur-
glary. Collingswood also had a de-
crease of 31 percent of overall
crime (339 to 234), 41 percent in
theft (188 to 111) and a 9.2 percent
decrease in burglary (65 to 59)
Its a possibility the same peo-
ple caused the same problems,
he said.
The department added one
new officer to a 21-man depart-
ment. All are fulltime officers,
Banning said.
For such a small department
with a lower crime rate when
compared to towns with a larger
population, the department does
not have a special system to track
crimes. He said its easy enough
for officers to search through
past files to see where improve-
ments need to be made and what
to be on the lookout for.
Its not hard to figure out pat-
terns, he said.

was not convinced the changes
made to the plan adhere to the
consistency of the historic dis-
trict in the future.
I cant vote for it. There is no
promise, no guarantee the use
will be that light in the future,
she said, adding her concern is
also with protecting the trees on-
site.
Resident Joe Haro was con-
cerned the approval of the site
plans would open Pandoras
box, enticing other applicants to
construct too close to the historic
district.
Haro mention historical archi-
tect Carter van Dyke Associates
was recently hired to aid in recon-
structing the historic districts or-
dinance, and agreed to the impor-
tance of buffer zones protecting
the feel of the historic district.
Its a beautiful village in the
middle of an urban sprawl. Lets
not ruin it, he said.
Church members were con-
cerned that without the parking
lot, it would be difficult for mem-
bers to attend mandatory Wednes-
day meetings and even Sunday
worships.
Church member Richard Mey-
ers said he and his wife travel
from Ewing to attend the meet-
ings in Haddonfield, often finding
parking a quarter of a mile away
from the church. He said not all
members are able to walk that far.
Haddonfield resident Michelle
Sparrow and her family live next
to the lot on Sylvan Lake Avenue.
We felt exposed, she said, as
the commission members passed
around photos she took with her
daughters cellphone on Feb. 10
when six cars illegally parked on
the lot for an event at the high
school.
Burns addressed some of the
issues presented by residents. He
said the way the plans were re-
designed does not alter the prop-
erty. The landscaping would act as
a buffer so cars parked on the lot
would not disturb the residents.
He said church representatives
are prepared to make alterations
and continue to review the plans
with the borough and the land-
scape architect and take the direc-
tion of the zoning and planning
boards to ensure the entire
process is done correctly.
We want to serve the commu-
nity in any way we can, church
member Linda Conner said.

If you've been wearing
dentures for a long time,
you know what the den-
ture look means. Not
everyone who wears den-
tures is old, but when den-
tures get old, they make you
look that way. Thin lips,
deep creases at the corners
of the mouth, a more
prominent chin these are
all signs of the denture
look.
Facelift Dentures is a
new technique. Mt. Holly
Family Dentistry is one of a
very few dental offices in
the US trained in this
process. It utilizes the prin-
ciples of neuromuscular
dentistry that we have, for
many years, used to help pa-
tients who suffer from
headaches and TMJ prob-
lems. We start with relaxed
facial muscles to determine
the most comfortable bite
position and the optimum
facial aesthetics. We build
the denture from that as a
starting point and with
those goals in mind.
Mt. Holly Family Den-
tistry has a lot of experi-
ence creating new smiles
for our patients. Dental
makeovers have been a cor-
nerstone of our practice for
many years. Now we can ex-
tend that service to denture
patients. We frequently get
notes and letters from
spouses and children of our
patients telling us what a
difference the new dentures
have made. Its an exciting
and gratifying process for
doctor and patient. For
more information, contact
us at 609-267-3230 or on line
