Lesson Plan: Proverbs Date: 7/23/2013 Topic: Academic Proverbs Learning Objectives: students will be able to: Briefly explain their assigned proverb Identify when and where to use their assigned proverb Time: 25 min No. of Students: 12

Materials: List of simple, academic proverbs split in two so that Ss can find their match; each proverb should try and use a different font so Ss can check if their proverb halves match. Whiteboard. Procedure: 1) Warm Up: Matching a) T does self intro and a quick ice breaker (How are you today? Or Good Afternoon). b) T writes an incomplete proverb on the board with three possibilities for the rest of the proverb; multiple choice. Ex. Knowledge is a) Power, b) to learn, c) no gain. If possible, try to write each multiple choice option in different handwriting (fonts) as an example for what they will do in the next activity. c) T asks Ss to help decide on the correct answer. Class votes and T tells the answer. d) This can be done again if needed. e) T writes Proverb at the top of the board and explains that these are now complete proverbs. f) T assures Ss that they will go over the meaning of each proverb after the next activity. Rationale for not explaining what a proverb is: I want the Ss to make their own definition of a proverb by seeing many examples of them throughout the lesson. I dont want to cloud their definition by telling them what to think. This is an abstract concept of when to use a proverb and how a proverb came to be and I think it is best taught by exposure. Im sure they have come across proverb in their language.

2) Activity: pairing a) T tells Ss that they will each receive a slip of paper with an incomplete proverb on it. Once each student has a slip of paper, they will go around the class and try to find their partner. b) Remind the Ss that they should not show their paper to the other Ss. Instead, read. c) T goes back to the proverbs on the board and tells the Ss how to check if they have found their partner: if the font matches, then you may sit with your partner! Meanwhile, T erases the other choices and leaves the matching fonts on the board therefore completing the proverbs. d) T models with a sample proverb.

3) Proverb discussion a) Ss now are sitting in pairs with their complete proverb. T instructs for them to discuss the meaning of their proverb. T models with sample proverb what he/she thinks that proverb means. b) Once finished, Ss report their findings back to T. T writes the proverbs on the board and Ss briefly explain. c) T asks if anyone else had different definitions. d) Continue until all Ss have explained their proverb.

4) Group Work: Dialogues a) Ss create their own scenarios and dialogues for their proverb. b) Rationale: Ss learn when and how they can use these in real life situations. c) Ss have a time limit and must write 6 line dialogue. Ss should also practice their skit. d) T has a sample dialogue written for proverb: No pain, no gain. ( See below ) e) Choose one student to model with the T. Model sample dialogue for Ss to see what they must do next.

f) Now that there are a few proverbs on the board, T should read the dialogue and have the students fill in what proverb matches the dialogue. Elicit, with gestures or orally to have Ss guess the appropriate proverb. g) T and student read the entire dialogue except for the proverb. Class guesses correct proverb.

5) Presentations: Dialogues a) Ss (pairs) present their sample dialogues to the class. b) Other Ss guess the appropriate proverb from the list, now on board. c) If time permits, every group should present.

6) Wrap up: Final dialogue a) T reads one more dialogue (having the last unused proverb be no pain, no gain) b) Ss should be able to easily guess No pain, No gain into the dialogue. This is the transition for the next topic: Success.
