Wright
in Kankakee County
Kankakee has a rich architectural history.
Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, widely
considered one of Americas greatest architects,
left his mark in downtown Kankakee by designing
two neighboring houses set along the banks of the
Kankakee River. Te B. Harley Bradley House,
a house museum with gift shop, and the Warren
R. Hickox House, a private residence, are part of
Kankakees Riverview Historic District.
Located less than a mile from downtown
Kankakee, the Riverview Historic District is flled
with many other impressively designed, custom-built
homes, many more than 100 years old.
Te Bradley House was designed by Wright in
1900. Originally named Glenlloyd, Te Bradley
House is recognized as the frst of Wrights Prairie
Style homes characterized by simple horizontal
lines, earth-toned palette, and long bands of iconic
art glass windows. Tis marked a radical change in
American architectural design. Te house includes
some of his trademark features, including sweeping
roofines, natural unfnished materials and expanses
of woodwork. Te seven-bedroom home is included
on the National Register of Historic Places.
In June 2010, Wright In Kankakee, a local not-
for-proft, acquired the house to create a museum
and public arts/education center. Following an
extensive restoration, the Bradley House is
open to the public for tours or event hosting.
