VAN BUREN TWP. The Board of Education approved hiring 12 new staff, including 10 teachers and two support staff a counselor for McBride Middle School and a social worker for Owen Intermediate School at its meeting July 22. The roles of the new hires ranged from English and Spanish to music and science and include a math interventionist. Shonta Langford-Greene, human resources director, said some of those hires were for new
positions, like the math interventionist, while others were to replace staff members who had recently retired or resigned. In other business, the board approved, 6-1, spending $149,000 for 160 laptop computers for Belleville New Tech students. Trustee Sherry Frazier voted against the purchase. Frazier asked when new computers for the schools would feature Windows 8 as their operating system, instead of Windows 7, which was the operating system for the new laptops. Trustee Kathy Kovach said her husband had recently purchased a new laptop with Windows
8 and they had regretted the purchase. Im living it, she said, referring to the difficulties they had had with the new operating system. Its horrible. Trustee Scott Russell said his employer continued to purchase new computers with Windows 7, and Trustee Kevin English supported the proposal. Jerry LaVaute is a special writer for Heritage Media. VAN BUREN TWP. A 57-year-old Romulus man died after his motorcycle collided with a sport utility vehicle Saturday at Hannan and North Line roads. A passenger on the motorcycle suffered extensive injuries and was taken to a hospital. Police said both the driver and passenger of the motorcycle were thrown off the bike during the collision. Emergency services were dispatched shortly
after 9:30 p.m. after the crash was reported, according to police. Police said a preliminary investigation determined a 20-year-old Ypsilanti man was driving a GMC Yukon west on North Line Road when he collided with the motorcycle, which was traveling south on Hannan Road. The motorcycle driver, identified as Glenn Herring, was pronounced dead at the scene. Jacquelynn Garcia, 50, of Romulus was the passenger on the motorcycle. She was transported to Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center in Dearborn.
She was listed in critical condition there Monday. The driver of the Yukon was not injured. The township accident investigation team was called to collect evidence. Alcohol doesnt appear to have been a factor in the crash and the incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Mark Buxton at 1-734-699-8917.
