Pharma Co. Expands U.S. HQ in Salisbury


Jubilant Cadista Pharmaceuticals, a generic prescription pharmaceutical company, plans to expand its U.S. headquarters in Salisbury by 96,000-squarefeet and add 200 jobs over the next five years. Upon completion in late 2014, the expansion will double the companys facility and include additional space for production, packing, warehouse and distribution, enabling it to double the number of products it produces. Plans for the expansion were announced in November 2011 as part of Governor OMalleys trade mission to India, after the Governor met with officials from the companys India-based parent Jubilant Life Sciences, part of the Jubilant Group. Join MD at MEDICA
Join Maryland November 20-23 in Dusseldorf Germany at MEDICA, the worlds largest event for the medical sector, to showcase your products and services to more than 150,000 attendees from 70 countries. The States 54-square-meter booth will be located in Hall 16 and will have room to accommodate eight Maryland companies. Developing Next Gen Vaccines


The University of Maryland Ventures facilitated a new partnership last month to improve worldwide vaccine production methods. Funded by PATH, an international nonprofit organization, the partnership brings together Frank Robb, Ph.D. of the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and Rockville-based Fina Biosolutions. Their joint effort to improve manufacturing of a key vaccine component will allow vaccines to become more affordable for emerging markets.

Register for 2013 Maryland Cyber Challenge


Registration is now open for aspiring cyber warriors from around the nation to compete in the 2013 Maryland Cyber Challenge on October 8-9 at the Baltimore Convention Center. The cyber competition features three levels of competition: High School, College and Professional. Teams will have the opportunity to develop and improve their cybersecurity skills in a real-world environment in competition for internships, grants and scholarships. Register here.

Five Companies Tapped for Advance MD


DBED and the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore selected five Maryland companies to participate in Advance Maryland, a new business program designed to support second-stage companies that are growth-oriented and have moved beyond the startup phase. In partnership with the National Center for Economic Gardening, a regional network of highly-skilled research specialists was established and matched with each company to address strategic growth challenges, from developing new markets and refining business models, to gaining access to competitive intelligence. UMD Tech Program Awards $3.8M


The University of Marylands Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) program has awarded $3.8 million to 17 teams combining Maryland companies with university researchers to bring technology products closer to market. The program provides matching grants to companies that partner with university researchers to accelerate technology commercialization. Companies are contributing $2.3 million and MIPS $1.5 million to the jointly funded projects. As many as 1,039 jobs in Maryland could be created over the next five years as a result of these projects. Click here for a list of selected projects.

Garrett County Welcomes Manufacturer


Strata Safety Products, a global leader in mine safety solutions, is constructing a 12,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in the Keysers Ridge Business Park in Grantsville. The company plans to create 25 new full-time jobs once the project is completed later this year. Strata will use the facility for research and development, engineering, product service, project management, and customer support in support of its line of emergence refuge and safety chambers and accessories.
